Developer: Chess Pie Media Price: $0.99 Version Reviewed: 1.1 Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4 Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Overall Rating: 3.94 out of 5 stars I’ve got a new favourite way of testing out the old gray matter; it’s called Quibble. Quibble is a word game mixed with some knowledge and trivia too. You’re presented with four cubes that have different answers on each face. You have to rotate the cube to match up four similar answers. These range from Maths problems to synonyms to colors or even currencies and things to do with the Arctic. There’s a lot of variety going on here.
Other than this, I adored Quibble. It’s a great cerebral challenge that educates too. I learnt some great synonyms as I went along and I felt as if my Maths knowledge was boosted too thanks to plenty of extended sessions with Quibble. There’s a lot to play through here too with the addition of four in-app purchases also available to add plenty of quesitons for $0.99 a time. Having said that, I didn’t feel an immediate need to do so as there seem to be plenty of questions to play through first. Quibble is an immensely simple idea but it’s just what you could want from a Word game. It’s simple to learn and use (just flip the cubes with your finger) but compelling stuff too. Time will fly by when playing this, and you’ll learn stuff too! A new and worthy permanent fixture to my iPhone. Max and the Magic Marker for iPad Review Posted: 20 Apr 2011 11:04 AM PDT Max and the Magic Marker for iPad ReviewBy Carter Dotson on April 20th, 2011Our Rating: iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad Max and the Magic Marker is a puzzle platformer that has you trying to traverse levels with the help of a magic marker that can interact with the environment.
Developer: Press Play Price: $4.99 Version Reviewed: 1.0.9 Device Reviewed On: iPad 1G Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Overall Rating: 3.38 out of 5 stars
The game is at its best when you have to think about how to use your marker to interact with the environment. Whenever you make yourself an impromptu staircase to climb platforms, drop a weird orange mass on a seesaw to send yourself skyward, or create a barrier to protect yourself from toxic rain to collect a dark orb, these are the moments when the game truly shines. Whenever the game focuses on these original elements, the kinds of things that no other platformer does, that is when the experience feels great. When the game works, it feels truly special. An element of the gameplay that you should learn to master is the ability to pause time, and draw freely – this helps out a lot if you want to draw lines under you, for example.
I love Max and the Magic Marker more in concept than in execution. If the platforming elements were tighter, and if the exploration elements were properly accommodated by the game, then this could be something truly special. However, as it stands, what you have is a game that is at times brilliant, but mostly frustrating. Posted: 20 Apr 2011 10:04 AM PDT Color Collider ReviewBy Blake Grundman on April 20th, 2011Our Rating: Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad Prepare to have your memory of kindergarten colors tested like never before.
Developer: Capcom Price: $0.99 Version: 1.0 App Reviewed on: iPhone 4 Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Do you remember the part of kindergarten where you learned about how to make colors? Hopefully you did, because Color Collider will be putting this to the test in a big way. The key mechanics of the game revolve around guiding colored marbles from the top of the stage into baskets of sorts, located at the bottom of the screen. Sounds simple enough, right? WRONG! What isn’t considered is that each tray has a color associated with it, and the marbles that land in it need to be the same color in order to clear the stage. The trick is that you are coloring the descending spheres by passing them along and through ramps and tunnels that will change their color. Learning and knowing the proper sequence of modifications to the primary colors will become very important and very necessary, if one doesn’t want to tire of the game too quickly. Oh, and this is merely the tip of the iceberg, because later on objects like fans, teleporters and trampolines will make appearance, ultimately resulting in a player’s brain being reduced to slag in no time flat.
There are many interesting and new ideas that Color Collider brings to the table, but sadly the mechanics can become increasingly frustrating the more difficulty the player encounters. Issues aside, it is both a fun and challenging game that is bound to give the masses fits for quite some time. Forget teasing your brain, plan to have it molested… We wouldn’t have it any other way. Is it worth switching from your current Twitter app? Keep reading to find out.
Developer: Tapbots Price: $1.99 iPhone Integration Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars Let’s take a look at Tweetbot from the fine folks at Tapbots. It’s a full Twitter client with a focus on a full feature list and an eye for design as only Tapbots can do it. We take a look and try to figure out if this app is worth switching from your current Twitter app for.
You can take a look at the apps from Tapbots to see that they have a real talent at designing beautiful and creative apps. Take a look at our previous reviews of Weightbot, Pastebot, and Convertbot for examples. Tweetbot fits right into that portfolio of really well designed and thought out apps. First off, Tweetbot does everything you’d expect a Twitter client to do. Multiple accounts, replies, direct messages, list support, image support, etc. Particular attention has been paid to reading of tweets from lists via tapping the header and selection of your timeline or a list from the main reading screen. Something we’ve seen little focus on in other clients. Overall the app is easy to use and looks damn good. Tweetbot has a few great unique features aimed mainly at saving you some time. I find myself loving the new gestures and fell into them fairly quickly. For example, sliding your finger from left to right over a tweet will load the corresponding conversation. Very useful to be able to trace a mention back to it’s source. Likewise, sliding left to right loads reactions to a tweet — very good feature that’s missing from many clients.
In addition, as I’ve seen in almost every other Twitter app, there are timeline gap issues. This happens when you follow lots of people and are gone from the app for long periods of time. When you come back the app loads the latest tweets, but this leaves a timeline gap from the ones you had seen before. The issue is the gap between these groups of tweets, how do you read those? Tweetbot does provide a way to fill in these gaps, but it does seem to have issues where loading the gap tweets sometimes fills in the gap with nothing or an incomplete set leaving a gap of many hours. I have heard from some that this issue in Twitter apps is caused by errors returned by Twitter. If that’s the case, then apps should work around it in some way — perhaps giving the option to clear the timeline and reload it or force a reload of the gap tweets. In addition, I do miss the ability to tap directly on a URL in a tweet as some other clients allow. To tap on a URL listed in a tweet in Tweetbot, you need to first select the tweet to reveal options and activate the URLs and make them touchable. But then again, this is a 1.0 version. If there weren’t areas to improve on, we wouldn’t have anything to look forward to in updates! Still, we do have to review the app as it stands now, and these issues do deduct somewhat from the overall application. Tapbots have posted to their blog that they are working on a update to address some of these issues. So, is this the right Twitter client for you? To answer that you really have to decide what’s important to you. For me, a couple things made this my client of choice. This includes the ability to quickly view a conversation, quick Instapaper support, and the list reading support. For others, these items may not be important and you’ll have to decide for yourself if Tweetbot is for you or not. If you use Twitter on your mobile device a lot, my guess is that it will be, or at least worth the price of the app to see if it might be for you. In the end, I’ve been using Tweetbot exclusively on my iPhone for almost a week now. Now this review is done, I will stick with it. It has everything I want and use and I’m happy to put up with the few small issues, for now. I really hope that Tapbot will support this app and continue to grow it in spite of the apparent dislike by Twitter of third party client applications. While the iPhone version might be in need of a dash more personality, it’s still quite a solid title.
GemCraft isn’t the prettiest of games, nor one with an involving storyline, but it does have a lot of depth. The combination of gems, structure building and unlockable skills makes for a potent mix. GemCraft sticks with substance over style which will work for some (particularly fans of the Flash game who are bound to be happy here) but others might feel more at home with the likes of Plants vs. Zombies or GeoDefense. Baseball Simulation Series Out of the Park Baseball Hits iOS With iOOTP 2011 Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:04 AM PDT
Do not expect the latest in high-quality 3D graphics from iOOTP – this is an entirely menu-based affair. You don’t actually control the pitchers and batters, you just manage them. You can tell them to take pitches, steal bases, or bunt when on offense, and tell your pitcher to throw over to a base, pitch around a batter, or issue an intentional walk. Off the field, you set your team’s lineups, depth charts, can send players to and from the minor leagues, offer them contract extension, and complete other transactions with them. You can take about as much control over the game as you want, or as little – if you want to manage every plate appearance of every single game, and set up every single lineup and transaction, you can do that. You could also let the computer set your lineups and depth charts, and simulate even up to an entire week of games at a time. So what could possibly be the appeal of a game like this? Well, it’s realism. The thing I don’t like about actual baseball games is that I feel like I lose a lot of realism when I play them – I could turn Ted Williams into a wild hacker if I wanted to. And on the mound, I could make even Rick Ankiel able to find the strike zone. It feels weird, so it’s nice to let the computer take over, and enjoy the parts of games that I enjoy most – situational management, and letting the players decide what happens, instead of being in direct and unrealistic control of them. Having gotten to play a preview build of the game, there is still plenty of potential entertainment value to be had from a game that is largely just menu-based. iOOTP is not out yet, although they are already promising enhancements beyond the initial release. The game should launch with updated Opening Day rosters, and there is talk of adding Retina Display and iPad support down the road. The game comes out of the box with the 2011 roster, and will come with 3 historical leagues, with additional leagues available for $0.99 each. The game will be submitted soon to the App Store, so you can soon manage your own favorite team just the way you want.
