Apple iOS Outreaches Android by 59%

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 02:19 AM PDT

We’ve all read news reports on Android’s quickly increasing grasp of the smartphone market but new data released from comScore has highlighted the fact that the iOS platform, overall, on iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches is used by 37.9 million users in the United States, while the Android platform (including Android phones and connected media devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab) has a user base of only 23.8 million. Apple has access to 16.2% of the 234 million mobile platform users, giving them a much greater reach than Android’s 10.2% share.

Interestingly, comScore has determined that the Apple user base is made up of more than just Apple fanatics. Only 10.5% of iOS users access the system from more than one device, such as an iPhone and an iPad. According to Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president, “These data clearly illustrate the Apple ecosystem extends far beyond the iPhone. Though it’s frequently assumed that the Apple user base is composed of dedicated Apple ‘fanboys’, there’s not a tremendous amount of overlapping mobile device access among these users. This of course has significant implications for the developer community as they consider the market potential in developing applications for different mobile platforms.”

While Apple iPhone users do account for the largest share of iPad owners at 27.3%, 17.5% of iPad users have a BlackBerry, and 14.2% use an Android phone. According to this data, the majority of iPad owners are not Apple addicts. Most iPad owners are using phones made by competing companies, and all of these companies – Samsung, Motorola, LG, RIM – have tablets of their own.

Apple may be slightly behind in the mobile phone market (though the Verizon iPhone is helping to fill that gap), but the iPad is clearly dominating tablet devices, and will continue to do so as long as there continues to be no Android tablet that can compete with it. Android phones may outsell iPhones, but Apple still has the competitive edge with a much greater share of the entire mobile market.

comScore reports that it will release European data from iPads and other connected media devices soon.

Apple Restricts Employee Vacations the End of May

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 11:24 PM PDT

What do McLean, Virginia and Glendale, California have in common?  Give up?  They were the locations for the first two Apple retail stores which opened May 19, 2001.

With the 10 year anniversary of the first store openings coming soon, AppleInsider reports Apple has informed employees not to schedule time off the weekend of May 20th – 22nd.  It seems reasonable to assume Apple will likely celebrate this anniversary with some type of special event; however, no details are available as of yet.

Several new Apple products are expected in the coming months, but will one of those be the highlight of May’s anniversary event?  Consumers can look forward to an update to the iMac line, as well as a new iPhone, sometime this year; however, it’s unlikely either one of these launches would coincide with the May celebration.

Apple’s retail stores have come a long way since their humble beginnings ten years ago.  The two original locations have increased significantly to 7 stores in Virginia, 48 in California and over 300 world-wide, with plans for expansion continuing this year.

The second quarter financial results reported today confirm the success of Apple’s products and 3Q analyst predictions continue to be positive.  What surprises does Apple have in store for us in May and the rest of the year?  We’ll just have to wait and find out.

Apple Q2 Results: Almost 5 Million iPads Sold from January to March

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 07:51 PM PDT

Apple just released its financial results for the second quarter of its fiscal year, which ended on March 26. During the quarter, Apple managed to sell a whopping 4.7 million iPads, a figure in line with our earlier predictions.

During the quarter, Apple manage to sell almost $25 billion worth of Macs and iOS devices, and pocketed an impressive profit of about $6 billion, a new record for Apple.”With quarterly revenue growth of 83 percent and profit growth of 95 percent, we're firing on all cylinders,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year.”

Since the launch of the iPad 2 on March 11 in the U.S., and in 25 additional countries on March 25, Apple “has sold every iPad 2 [the company] could make during the quarter,” an unsurprising statement, given that the iPad 2 has been almost impossible to find over the last month, despite Apple’s efforts at improving the availability of the device.

The iPad is also getting increasingly popular in the corporate world, as 75 percent of the Fortune 500 companies are now trialing or using the device on a regular basis. Companies using the device include Xerox, Autonation, ADP, Disney, and Prudential, to name a few.

Finally, iTunes generated about $1.4 billion in sales, a new record for Apple. iTunes sales were boosted by an ever expanding media portfolio, and more importantly, the 350,000 iOS apps available on the App Store.

iPad Held 85% Market Share in 2010

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 03:51 PM PDT

Today ABI Research announced that Apple's iPad dominated the media tablet market in 2010, holding 85 percent of the market share. Of course, this isn't exactly surprising news with no true iPad competitor in existence yet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab was a not so close second with eight percent market share, and the Archos Internet tablets managed to snag just two percent market share. These three vendors account for 95 percent of the media tablet market.

Apple got a huge jump on its competitors releasing the iPad in early 2010, and now other manufacturers are scrambling to catch up. For now, though, the iPad deserves a large slice of the tablet pie for launching us in to the era of mobile computing. During the second half of 2010, after the release of the iPad, there was a spike in tablet, netbook, and broadband-enabled eBook reader sales, and that increase is expected to continue well in to the future. According to Jeff Orr of ABI, "With increasing choices for consumers and greater opportunities for businesses to consider ultra-mobile devices, we expect multiple device categories to benefit in the near-term." In fact, ABI predicts that manufacturers will ship 40 to 50 million tablets worldwide in 2011.

Research suggests that we will see many new low-feature and low-cost designs, as new manufacturers try to distinguish themselves from the iPad and its $499+ price point. In addition, several Android tablets will hit the market in 2011, and with the release of Android's dedicated tablet OS, Honeycomb, Apple's iPad 2 may have some actual competition, but only time will tell.

Are your iPad and iPhone Tracking your Whereabouts?

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 01:18 PM PDT

According to a new article from the Guardian, security researchers have discovered that iOS devices such as the iPhone and the iPad 3G keep track of your whereabouts. While the ‘feature’ was discovered some time ago, it didn’t get much coverage until the Guardian published a piece about it earlier today.

For some unknown reason, GPS-enabled iOS devices such as 3G iPad 1/2 and iPhone save the location of their owner on a regular basis, in a file stored on the device, and transmitted to iTunes each time the device is plugged into a Mac or a PC.

While the purpose of the file is unknown, it appears that the ‘feature’ was introduced alongside iOS 4, earlier this year. Nobody’s really sure about how much data the file can hold, but the Guardian speculates that the file could hold up to a year worth of data. To add insult to injury, the file does not seem to be difficult to find and read, making it possible “for almost anybody – a jealous spouse, a private detective – with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you’ve been,” according to one of the researchers who helped write the article.

Data extracted from an iPhone location file – Credit: Guardian

While a bit spooky, the presence of this file may not be as bad as it seems – after all, the data may be used by some of Apple’s services such as Find my iPhone/iPad, or could be used to track the whereabouts of iPhone and iPad thieves. Moreover, the research shows that the data is not transmitted to Apple.

Until Apple communicates on the purpose of the file, and until the company encrypts it in a future iteration of iOS, the speculation about its purpose is not going to go away any time soon.

Apple Cuts iPad 2 Online Shipping Times

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 10:10 AM PDT

Apple finally seems to be catching up to the huge demand for the iPad 2.  Apple’s online store  is now showing the iPad 2, both WiFi only and 3G models, shipping in just 1-2 weeks.  This is a significant drop from a few weeks ago when Apple Store wait times were 4-5 weeks.

Apple has consistently been improving the shipping times of online orders since the iPad 2 launched on March 11.  Just a week ago, Apple reduced estimated shipping times to 2-3 weeks from the  3-4 weeks after the iPad 2′s international rollout.

Customers who have repeatedly waited in line at their local Apple Store in hopes of securing an iPad 2 should appreciate the new improved shipping times. Another positive for customers ordering online is Apple's estimated ship dates have been very accurate.  Readers have repeatedly told us Apple's shipping window is dead-on and that they have been receiving their iPad 2 a few days ahead of the time-range Apple provided.

The improved estimated shipping times do not appear to be limited to the US store.  A quick check of other international Apple Online Stores shows that several other countries wait times have also dropped to 1-2 weeks. A few countries remain at 2-3 weeks estimated shipping times.

Sony’s Crackle Video Streaming App Approved by Apple

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 08:42 AM PDT

Ever since Apple prevented Sony’s Reader app from getting onto the App Store, Sony kept trying and working hard on bringing a new application that could showcase the company’s taste and access to video content.

Sony’s free Crackle app has been approved by Apple and it will give you access to hundreds of movies from Sony Pictures Classics, Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, and Tri-Star libraries. You also get the chance to enjoy a variety of TV series episodes.

But, how can Sony offer this application for free? Simple. First, the company has access to video content and it has the relationships. Second, since Crackle is a free application you will encounter short ads that appear during the video. However, most of the ads I’ve seen are short ads, which should not be a problem for many viewers. Let’s not forget that Crackle is a free application, with no subscription fee and free content.

As of now, the overall selection of movies is somewhat limited compared to other services like Netflix. But, the free app includes more than 200 video titles, and a diverse selection of TV episodes and original programming.

Sony is actually providing high-quality video streaming with a curated experience that fits quite nicely on the iPad. The video selection includes full-length Hollywood movies, and a very good selection of TV episodes from popular shows like Seinfeld, Married with Children, and many others. The same content can also be consumed on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

The application interface is quite easy to use. You can browse for movies and TV shows, and see featured and most popular movies. The application allows you to pause viewing and resume playback where you left off. You have your own Queue management for viewing content within the iOS application or online at Crackle.com.

Crackle’s engine will constantly push and inform you about the movies and TV shows that are appealing to the masses. You will be able to enjoy video content from multiple categories – action, comedy, crime, horror, thriller and sci-fi.

If you would like to get access to video content via WiFi or 3G, Sony’s Crackle iOS streaming app is a very good choice. As expected, Sony plans to add more content going forward.

Crackle is a universal iOS app, and it’s available to download for free now.
