What The Buyout Of T-Mobile Means For You

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 04:38 AM PDT

What The Buyout Of T-Mobile Means For You

We reported to you earlier that AT&T have agreed a deal to buyout T-Mobile USA, and asked you if you were happy with the news. But what will this mean for current T-Mobile customers?

T-Mobile has provided some information on what the deal means for its customers. Service will remain exactly the same and customers will still receive their bills from T-Mobile. The company states the deal is being done to create big benefits for its customers, and will ensure a 4G LTE network for 95% of the US population.

It is also claimed that both AT&T and T-Mobile customers will see a better voice and data experience just after both networks are integrated. Consumers who currently own a T-Mobile handset can continue to use it as normal.

With the iPhone, T-Mobile will not be offering it in the near future and the deal is expected to take twelve months to complete. All current contract deals with customers will be honored by T-Mobile.

The two companies joining forces like this could provide some stiff opposition for the likes of Verizon, but will also lower the choice consumers have on when deciding on what mobile carrier to choose. And will it mean trouble for smaller carriers like Sprint?

Tell us what you think about the news and take a look at the poll we have running.

Disc Drivin’ HD: Multiplayer Racing Game Gets Own iPad App

Disc Drivin’ HD: Multiplayer Racing Game Gets Own iPad App

When Pixelocity Software first released the Disc Drivin' game onto the Apple App Store last year, it was already compatible with the iPad as well as the iPod Touch and iPhone. However, the developer has now decided to give the online multiplayer racing game its very own iPad optimized HD version.

As Jared Nelson over on the toucharcade.com website recently noted, the gameplay and content – which includes simple swipe controls to propel your disc and unique obstacles such as ramps and barriers – has remained identical to the standard version, but the menu interface has been tweaked significantly.

The artwork has also been scaled appropriately for the larger screen. Another small but welcome addition to the HD version is the ability to toggle the overhead view off and on, instead of having to hold the camera icon down. This of course makes it easier to get a bird's eye view of a player's previous turn.

It also gives players a better perspective on the track. As noted over on the itunes.apple.com website, the Disc Drivin' HD game features full 3D physics, Retina display graphics, push notifications to tell you when it's your turn, in-game chat and the ability to play up to 20 games online simultaneously.

Have you ever played the Disc Drivin' game on an iOS device before?

Verizon LTE Mobile Hotspot: 3 new 4G modems to release

Verizon LTE Mobile Hotspot: 3 new 4G modems to release

You may be wondering why you need a mobile hotspot when new phones, like the Apple iPhone, are allowing you to use the devices as mobile hotspots. Not everyone will have this capability or there may be a charge for this that they're not willing to pay, so this is where a MiFi device comes in handy.

Verizon know this as they are about to release three new MiFi devices, which include the Samsung SCH-L11 4G, Novatel USB551L, and Novatel MiFi 4510L. These devices seem a lot smarter than what we've seen in the past; remember the Fivespot global mobile hotspot.

According to Phone Arena, the above devices have been shown in the latest rebate list for Verizon, and will take the total number of LTE 4G modems to five, that are being currently offered by the carrier.

It's nice to see that the Novatel MiFi USB551L and 4510L are compatible with Mac OS, which can be a rare thing. Both the said model numbers are USB sticks, while the LTE modem from Samsung looks completely different. You can see an image on Phone Arena here, which shows a thin rectangular modem. All three rebates total $50.

You will get LTE speeds of 2-3 Mbps upload, 5-12 Mbps download, and the devices are all compatible with the 3G network on Verizon Wireless. Feel free to hit the link above for more details on price and availability.

How do you like to access the web while you're mobile? Do you use tethering, or is a MiFi device the way you like to go?

Should Battlefield 3 PS3 Feature 3D and Move Compatibility?

Should Battlefield 3 PS3 Feature 3D and Move Compatibility?

DICE has revealed that they are thinking about making their upcoming hit Battlefield 3 compatable with Playstation Move andalso offer 3D visuals. DICE’s GM has said "We are thinking about it, yes, definitely,"

The thought comes from the movement in the Playstation game market as many games are seeping into the 3D market and more and more have begun incorporating the use of the Playstation Move controller since its release. The art director for Battlefield 3 said "Of course we look at what the others are doing, at the same time, we're looking at what we can improve.”

You can see a list of PlayStation Move compatible games here and a list of 3D PS3 games here, as you can see DICE (EA Digital Illusions CE) has not released a game with 3D visuals or Move compatibility yet, therefore it is about time that such a formidable game developer started offering games which support two of gaming’s latest technologies.

Other games such as the recently released Killzone 3 support 3D and feature Playstation Move compatibility, therefore those of you who have paid out for Sony’s motion controller and a 3DTV will be looking for new releases which will utilize their new goodies, but does Battlefield 3 need to offer these features?

iPhone 5 release, the risk to carriers

iPhone 5 release, the risk to carriers

Following on from the huge announcement that AT&T has plans to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion from Deutsche Telekom, we wanted to talk about a bit on the potential impact it has on other carriers. Verizon will probably be able to cope with the move, but what about Sprint? This is a definite shock as we build towards the iPhone 5 release.

We’ve picked out a recent article over at Apple Insider which includes some very interesting details about how T-Mobile admitted that profits were down for their American market specifically due to the fact that they couldn’t offer the Apple iPhone to their customers.

With that in mind, it does make you wonder whether that had a large impact on the decision to join forces with AT&T, a carrier which has been offering the iPhone ever since Apple first launched it. We previously mentioned that the move now essentially changes the smartphone industry to a three horse race in the US, leaving Sprint execs scratching their heads as to what to do next to combat this problem.

It does now seem that Sprint has an uphill task to counter this move by AT&T. If contending with Verizon wasn’t enough, they now have to consider a joint venture between AT&T and T-Mobile – with no iPhone either.

The iPhone 4 was a key factor in terms of sales for AT&T and now Verizon, and Sprint and T-Mobile knew it. T-Mobile may have made the correct business decision in joining AT&T, but where does that leave Sprint?

Let us know your thoughts on this, particularly if you’re a Sprint or T-Mobile customer.

Crysis 2 Vs Killzone 3: Which has better Graphics?

So Killzone 3 is already out on the PlayStation 3 and Crysis 2 is set to follow it shortly at the end of March on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Talking about the PS3 version specifically, we’ve heard whispers that Killzone 3 is currently the best looking game on the console at the moment, but can Crysis 2 match it in the graphics department?

If you have been keeping up to date with the PS3 release of Crysis 2, you’ll know that there was some controversy surrounding the demo release and the fact that Crytek decided to pull it, to iron out some technical issues that they discovered after releasing it.

Crytek has recently issued a statement to those who believe that the graphics featured in Crysis 2 aren’t as good as those seen on the Xbox 360. Here is what Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo said in a recent interview as reported from PlayStation Lifestyle:

”I've gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don't see it at all.”

With that debate aside, we’ve found a useful video for you to take a look at which gives you an idea just how good the graphics are in Crysis 2. This video is taken from the PlayStation 3 version of the game. After watching it, let us know your opinions on the graphics. Are they really as bad as everyone is making out, or do you think they top those seen in Killzone 3? There are some early reviews for Crysis 2 here if you missed them last time.

Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim: New Gameplay Features and Magic Info Update

Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim: New Gameplay Features and Magic Info Update

We have some good news for all you Elder Scrolls fans out there, as some new gameplay details from Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have emerged, and they are details that you may not know about yet. We’re talking about the return of enchanting weapons, the inclusion of brand new magic, and more.

Firstly, fans of Oblivion will be pleased to hear that the enchanting ability will once again be featured in Skyrim. If you dont know, this allows the player to create magical spells to be equipped onto any weapon, armor or accessories. It was one of the main abilities in previous games so I personally am pleased to see it’s coming back.

On to something new, and we can tell you that one of the new magic abilities is called Dragon Shouts, as detailed over at GamenTrain. As most of you will know, Skyrim will introduce dragons into the game, and killing one in game will allow you to capture it’s soul. Once you have acquired a soul, you can use it to unlock ancient codes that are present in various dungeons in the game, and then once you’ve done that you’ll then get to use the new ability – sounds interesting.

Another great thing about Oblivion was the freedom that players had away from the main storyline. We’re hearing that Skyrim will feature something known as the ‘Radiant Storytelling system’, which will change up gameplay dramatically based on the actions and options you choose for your player. This method obviously keeps the campaign unique to the player, unlike using the same formula over and over which gets boring over time.

What are your thoughts on the new information? Obviously, the most exciting part is the info about these Dragon Shouts. Hopefully we’ll have some fresh details on this particular aspect soon – who knows, maybe even a video if you’re lucky. Just to remind you, Skyrim is due out 11.11.11 – you can watch the latest trailer for the game in HD here in case you missed it last time.

Samsung Galaxy S II Mini: Specs and Three UK Release

Most of you will probably be aware that Samsung are preparing to unleash their successor to the Galaxy S smartphone, with the S2 or II, but what you didn’t know is that there is actually a smaller version of the device on the way too, with a UK carrier leaking the details.

That carrier is Three UK and the device has just been revealed courtesy of Three’s Spring-Summer lineup which has been intercepted by Engadget. The Samsung Galaxy S II Mini will be available in the next few months and we have a list of specs to give you.

Unlike it’s bigger brother, the Mini version will come with a 3.7-inch display as opposed to the 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display that is equipped on the normal version. The mini will come with 5 megapixel camera (normal is 8MP) with a VGA front camera and a 1.4Ghz single core processor, not dual core like the S II.

Another positive for this handset is that it will be shipping with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which will be a big relief for some of you. It will also have a personal hotspot feature available as well. You can look forward to a release sometime in April, we’ll try and bring you some solid pictures of the device soon. You can view a grainy picture over at Engadget here.

HTC Pyramid: First Solid Photo Appears

Remember the rumored HTC Pyramid smartphone that we told you about recently? Well it looks like this handset is indeed real as we have found another picture of the device for you to take a look at, one which gives you a solid look at the phone for the first time.

Last time we only had some renders to show you, but this one is an actual photo of the device, which we presume is a prototype which has been prized away from HTC’s manufacturing HQ. The picture which you see below has been obtained courtesy of TechBlog.gr, it shows the handset alongside the HTC Desire HD just for your reference:

Once again, we see that unusual silver design on the back of the device, we’re not sure if we like it yet, but you could argue that it’s a nice way to keep smartphones fresh and not just have the same old boring black design on the back – do you agree?

No mention of specs yet, but we can see from the photo that the Pyramid will have a decent rear camera combined with a dual LED flash as well as a 3.55mm headphone jack situated at the top of the device.

Are you interested in this handset, based on this hybrid silver design that you can see? We’ll let you know when we hear about specs for the Pyramid.

AT&T and T-Mobile Deal: Four Becomes Three, Are you Happy?

We have some huge news to bring you now, as it has been confirmed that AT&T has just secured the buyout of former rivals T-Mobile USA in a deal thought to be worth about $39 billion USD. It now means that there will only be three main carriers in the US and we want to know your thoughts on the move.

For those of you who didn’t know, T-Mobile is owned by Deutsche Telekom and they have just given the green light for the sale to go ahead, which is going to send shockwaves throughout the smartphone industry in the US.

The two companies will now form an alliance against Verizon and Sprint and you have to say that it could be a formidable partnership with both sets of customer bases merged together. It also means that AT&T will be able to boast the largest LTE customer base once their network comes available, with 95 percent of Americans now thought to be eligible with the addition of T-Mobile’s services, as reported from Engadget.

What are your thoughts about this deal? You are probably as shocked and surprised as we are, but if you’re a T-Mobile customer at the moment, are you happy or a bit angry over the deal? AT&T aren’t the most popular carrier in the US for sure, but this deal could swing the momentum back in their favor.

We’re hearing that it will take around a year for the partnership to go into full effect. You can read the official press release here for the full lowdown on the deal. We’ll be bringing you further news from the deal soon. Good move for the consumer or not?

MotorStorm: Apocalypse – Release Date Delayed

Evolution Studios’ upcoming adrenaline-fuelled racer Motorstorm: Apocalypse has been held back from release in various countries. Due to the current disasters in Japan and New Zealand, the game is being held indefinately.

The news comes from the Playstation Blog and says that the game’s release date will be held back until an update is given on the matter. The decision to prevent the release has come about due to the huge disasters in Japan and New Zealand recently, and it is assumed that once the areas are safer a new release date will be announced.

Many gamers are saddened by the news but equally sympathetic to the victims of the disasters, many have stated on the Blog that people will need to let time pass before a destructive game such as this comes out. Others are more dissapointed and feel that the game will not cause any controversy or upset and so should have kept its original release date March 12.

Whatever your views is you can’t deny that it is a massive sign of respect, Japanese and New Zealand victims and are aware of the content in their games. We will keep you posted as we hear more details on the matter.

Do you think that delaying the game’s release was the correct decision?

Games consoles vs Mobile Devices: Mobile technology killing off consoles?

With the latest technologies that are featuring in the mobile world, whether it is in tablets, smartphones or portable gaming consoles does it mean that games consoles are a 'dying breed'? This is a question being asked in an article at Nerd Reactor as they try to figure this out.

In the article the CEO of Rovio, the Angry Birds developer, Peter Vesterbacka is quoted from a statement he made while on a panel at the recent South by Southwest (SXSW) event. He was claiming that mobile devices are taking over the gaming industry and that console were indeed a dying breed.

His statement was countered against by the EVP of Nokia, Tero Ojanpera who was also on the panel. He is reported to have argued that there will always be a place for consoles as gamers don't tend to plug their mobile devices in to their TVs.

Although the writer of the article defends Vesterbacka's point saying it was defense against comments that were made by Saturo Iwata, Nintendo's CEO's comments at GDC, he seems to be pro console.

To find out what other points were made, read the full article by clicking the link above. What do you think of the points being made? Do you think mobile devices will eventually kill off the games console? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Notion Ink Adam, better than iPad 3 release

Notion Ink Adam, better than iPad 3 release

Apple release yearly updates to most of their product line, and with each upgrade they are keeping themselves ahead of most competitors but is this enough? While Apple's products are pretty slick, in our opinion, it's true that they are far from perfect, and we know there are competitors, in most of Apple's product lines, that have better products, so why are Apple still leading?

Marketing is Apple's strong point, Steve Jobs and his team have managed to make most of their products cool, and most people want an iPod and not a copycat. You can find a better media player with higher specs for less money, but not everyone knows this.

One example is Notion Ink's Adam, this tablet has an army of fans that have been dying to get their hands on the finished product, and those same people claim the device gives users the best package by far. It's been stated that Notion Ink's Adam gives those in the USA a tablet with no contract, the ability to play Flash media, amazing battery life, a massive amount of apps, a 4G WiMax chip, and is extremely cheap to buy. Some people claim it's the true "2nd generation tablet" and will even be better than the iPad 3 release, which could even come later in 2011 (although that's a hard rumor to swallow).

Rohan Shravan reported the latest on Notion Ink's Adam and it's progression in his last blog post, found here, that showed some impressive achievements and also explained the problems marketing the device to places like India.

Some people still think that the Adam is vaporware, and don't even know the device has shipped to some people, although stocks are limited. Even if it's true that this tablet beats iPad 2 and crazily an upcoming iPad 3, in specification terms, it's the ability to get the device to market in large enough numbers which will stop Notion Ink taking on Apple.

It's our opinion that the best products in the world are never those that sell the most, it takes a lot more than having the best kit, and the deals made behind the scenes are the answer to real success.

If you want the best tablet, do not aim for the most sold, shop around. Do you think the number of tablet’s sold by a brand helps in deciding which device you buy?

ZTE Skate Smartphone: UK Release Date Update

ZTE Skate Smartphone: UK Release Date Update

Chinese mobile phone manufacturer ZTE first introduced us to the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) run Skate during the 2011 Mobile World Congress back in February. At the time the company announced that the upcoming smartphone would go on sale around the world sometime in May.

However, according to Chris Hall over at pocket-lint.com, ZTE has recently provided an update on the UK release date and although we still have not got a specific date, we do know that it will be arriving in UK stores in the early second half of this year. We guess that means around about June/July.

When asked whether the ZTE Skate – which features a 4.3-inch display, an 800MHz processor and a 5-megapixel camera – would appear as a ZTE-branded smartphone or re-branded by UK carriers, Wu Sa (ZTE UK's director of mobile device operations) was unable to confirm the position with carriers.

However, the company did confirm that they are currently in discussions with all the tier one mobile carriers in the UK including O2, Vodafone, 3 and Everything Everywhere, who have all expressed a strong interest in ZTE's Android run devices.

What do you think of the ZTE Skate? Would you consider buying this handset?
