4G licenses to be auctioned by Ofcom

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 04:24 AM PDT

4G licenses to be auctioned by Ofcom

The UK has fallen behind the likes of Japan and the US when it comes to a 4G mobile network, but Ofcom has laid out plans for an auction of 4G mobile spectrum in the country.

Kate Solomon of TechRadar is reporting that Ofcom are saying that the new spectrum will provide capacity for 4G data, which should see mobile users having data speeds similar to what they get with their home broadband connection.

The auction will not begin until early 2012 though, and there will be two spectrum bands up for grabs. First there is 800 MHz, which will have a larger capacity due to the digital TV switchover and can widen existing 2G and 3G coverage. The 2.6GHz band will allow for the higher data speeds with 4G mobile.

Ofcom are looking to have four UK networks having the chance to offer a 4G service, and has put forward safeguard caps to prevent one of the big networks grabbing a larger share of the spectrum. Another condition that Ofcom are putting in place is that mobile broadband will have to cover 95% of the UK by 2017.

By making sure there will be four mobile carriers eventually offering a 4G service, will be better for the consumer in the long run. The British Government should also see a nice windfall once the auction is complete.

Firstly we do not take credit for this guide as we are simply giving you a run through of a guide video which was uploaded on YouTube by JV2017gameplay, we have embedded this video at the end of this post.

Firstly you must go to your writing desk and accept the ‘Night Terrors’ quest, when you select your party ensure that you do not choose Merrill, once you have chosen your party go to The Chantry, go up the stairs to the left and then take a left and find the Evil Tome, select it and then choose to destroy the book, you will be forced into battle.

Next you should go to the Viscount’s Keep, head east and you will find another tome, destroy the book and then win the battle, after this head to The Bone Pit here you must head into the cave and then on the left you will find another tome, again destroy the book and win the battle.

The next part of the quest requires you to go to The Wounded Coast, go straight ahead and you will come across the Dank Cave, another tome will be found here, destroy the book and then win the battle. After this you must go to Sundermount, find the recently opened passage, find the evil tome, destroy the book and win the battle.

HTC Pyramid: First picture of its front

HTC Pyramid: First picture of its front

Only just yesterday we showed you a photo of the HTC Pyramid, which was the first solid photo of the devices back. Alan explained how the back of the Pyramid looked a lot more slick when compared to the HTC Desire HD, you can see that photo in yesterday's post.

Today we've got a minor update that shows a photograph of the HTC Pyramid's front (via gsmarena.com), which clearly shows a secondary camera (seen below) that we believe would be used for self-portraits and video-calling, much similar in display size as the 4.3-inch Desire HD, you will notice that the icons are smaller on the Pyramid, which will likely mean that the device has a higher resolution.

GSM Arena has also shown some new specs for the new HTC phone, these are rumored to include Sense UI 3.0, DLNA, 8 megapixel camera with auto focus, 768 MB RAM, Android 2.4, and a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. Anything missing you wanted to see on the HTC Pyramid?

The popular blog also looks at the aspect ratio in a comparison they performed, you can read about this in the above link. What do you think of the HTC Pyramid so far, and will it be your next phone? We'll update you when we get more details, especially looking forward to a higher resolution photo or video.

Gobliins 2: Puzzle Adventure Game Coming to iPhone

If you're familiar with Sierra On-Line's classic puzzle-adventure game Gobliiins, which was remade for the iPhone last year, then you might like to know that its sequel Gobliins 2 is also coming to the iPhone and should be available to download from the Apple App Store this Thursday.

As Richard Meads over on the pocketgamer.co.uk website recently reported, the upcoming remake – which is published by Bulkypix – features all the retro music, writing and art from the original Amiga-era title, but with the added bonus of the game being in high definition.

The Gobliins 2 game sees players take charge of 2 goblins: Fingus, the well-mannered, shy one and the slow-witted Winkle, as they set out to try and rescue the King's son, the Prince Buffoon. Fingus and Winkle each have their own strengths and weaknesses, which need to be combined together to navigate through the puzzles.

Gobliins 2 does however have a few improvements compared to the original, including a hint system to help players on those really hard challenges and extra control sensitivity. The app will be priced at just 59p / €0.79 / 99c. You can also view a trailer for the game below this post.

Have you ever played the Gobliiins or Gobliins 2 games before?

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play: Game Pricing Details Revealed

We may well have provided our readers with the specs, price and release dates for the much-awaited Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handset, but up until now we have never really heard anything about how much the games for the device will actually cost.

However, it now appears that the game pricing details have now been revealed, thanks to Sony Ericsson's UK marketing boss David Hilton. As noted at mcvuk.com, Christopher Dring quizzed Hilton recently and one of the questions was on the pricing of the Xperia Play games.

Hilton said that the smaller, lower-tier games will be priced around £1 or £2 pounds, while the more complex games could well cost up to £10. The Xperia Play comes with six games pre-loaded onto it including The Sims 3, FIFA 10, Crash Bandicoot and Bruce Lee Dragon Warriors.

The other two pre-loaded games will be Tetris and Star Battalion. Hilton added that there will be more than 50 titles available to download upon the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play's launch, and they will be adding more to the list each month.

It's pretty simple to access these games as well. As soon as the user slides the phone open, the screen will enter the game finder app. The app will not only show them all the games they currently own, but also all the games that are available to download.

Are you thinking of buying the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play?

Blackberry Playbook: Official US Price is $500 – Best Tablet on the Market?

We have some important news for those of you who are planning on picking up the BlackBerry Playbook tablet from RIM, as the company has just announced official pricing for the device, much to our surprise. They previously hinted that the official price in US would be sub-$500 and they have kept to their word.

We’re not sure if the timing of the announcement has anything to do with LG’s recent announcement for the G-Slate which they’ve just priced at $529, but we can confirm that the BlackBerry Playbook will come in at $499, for the 16GB WiFi version of the device.

As well as announcing the price, RIM has also detailed a list of confirmed carriers and retailers which will stock the Playbook on launch. Sprint, Verizon, AT&T will all carry the Playbook, T-Mobile has the G-Slate remember, while Best Buy, Radioshack and Staples top the list for confimed retailers.

What are your thoughts on the $499 price? It’s very reasonable for a 7-inch device which features a dual-core 1Ghz processor, dual 1080p cameras (5 megapixel back, 3 megapixel on the front) and a brand new BlackBerry Tablet OS to enjoy. It also means that the Playbook is $100 cheaper than the Motorola Xoom and also falls at the same $499 price point as the 16GB WiFi iPad 2.

Who is planning to get one now that you know the official price? Is it your favorite tablet on the market now, or do you still think other contenders offer more? We’ll be providing you with more feedback on the Playbook’s pricing soon. The official press release link is here, but it appears to be down at the moment – check it again later to see if it fixes itself.

Samsung 470 SSD, Better than Corsair Nova and OCZ Vertex 2

Recently the guys over at NotebookReview tested out some of the best solid-state drives currently on offer, in their recent test they tested out the Samsung 470, Corsair Nova and OCZ Vertex 2 SSDs.

Let’s start with a quick overview of the performance specifications, the 256GB Samsung 470 features a maximum read speed of 250 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 220 MB/s, the Corsair Nova V128 features a maximum read speed of 270 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 195 MB/s and the 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 features a maximum read speed of 285 MB/s and a maximum write speed 275 MB/s.

You can two pages of benchmark tests over at NotebookReview, overall the Samsung 470 SSD came out on top as it performed best in the CrystalDiskMark 3.0 benchmark, the Microsoft's Office 2010 suite installation test, the 7GB file copy test, and the multi task test, however it has to be said that Corsair Nova came close in a lot of the tests.

The OCZ Vertex 2 boots Windows 7 and launches applications quicker than the other two SSDs, however it was a bit of a slouch in the 7GB file copy test, I guess it all depend son what you want from your solid-state drive.

We would love to see how the Samsung 470 compares to Intel’s impressive 510 series SSDs, when we come across a comparison article we will keep you posted.

Fastest Sports Cars in the World: 2011 List

If you currently have money to blow and are thinking of getting a sports car, or you’re just interested to know for the sake of it, we now have a list of cars which are considered to be the fastest sports cars in the world for 2011. Any guesses as to which car is number one?

We have a list of 10 vehicles to show you now, and the entries on the list include a few motors which you are bound to have heard of if you’re a fan of fast sports cars. On the list provided over at TheSuperCars, the number ten ranked car for 2011 is the Porsche Carrera GT.

The Carrera GT has a top speed of 205 MPH and can reach 0-60 in an stunning 3.9 seconds. While it certainly impresses in the style department (it’s a porsche come on!), perhaps the downside is it’s price as you’ll have to pay around $440,000 to take one home.

Alternatively, number five on the list is the McLaren F1, which is slightly faster than the Carrera GT with a top speed of 240 MPH. It comes with a BMW S70/2 60 Degree V12 Engine with 627 horsepower, but the price is probably out of most people’s reach at a staggering $940,000. We love the design on this one, perhaps not a fan of the orange color though.

We’re going to skip to the top of the list and we can reveal that unsurprisingly, the Bugatti Veyron is still the world’s fastest sports car, with a top speed of 267 mph and the ability to reach 0-60 in a mindblowing 2.5 seconds. Good luck trying to pick up the newest Super Sport version though, it will cost you a cool $1,700,000 if you can get your hands on one somewhere.

Are you surprised that the Bugatti Veyron remains the fastest sports car in the world? You can view the top ten list in the link above. We’ve included a video of the Super Sport Bugatti Veyron for you to watch below.

Apple iPad 2: Australia Price and Availability

As we reported yesterday the iPad 2 launch looks set to be happening as originally planned by Apple. We now have some news of the Australia price and availability for you, as many countries gear up for the release on Friday.

TechLogg are reporting that an Australian forum site has claims by a member, who says they have managed to get hold of pricing for the device. At the moment though it is only speculation until Apple announce officially how much the iPad 2 will cost.

The prices include GST, which allows for some of the price difference with the US, but there does seem a bit on top of that. Prices start at $579 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model, and go up to $799 for the 64GB.

If you want a Wi-Fi and 3G these start at $729 for 16GB and the 64GB version will set you back $949. These prices do suggest a $50 discount compared to the original iPad launch last April, and whatever color you decide to get the prices are the same for both.

So far we don't have any news on how many units each person will be allowed to buy, but expect to see a limit of two.

Which version of iPad 2 will you be buying on Friday?

Kinect Hacks: Sony PS3 has best of both worlds

We have seen a fair share of hacks for Microsoft’s Kinect camera hardware over the last few months, but perhaps none more exciting than this. The device has now been hacked to work on the Sony PlayStation 3 believe it or not, and we have a video to show you which proves it.

Credit for the hack goes to Shantanu Goel, as he has provided a video which shows the PS3′s XMB being controlled solely by Kinect. The code for the hack is in pre-alpha status at the moment, but the video clearly shows what is possible with the new trick.

The video even shows Killzone 3 operating on Kinect motion controls too – how impressive is that folks? You can see that a variety of hand gestures allows the user to navigate through the menus of Killzone 3, for example a scrolling motion to browse through the options and so on. The in-game motion tracking isn’t as impressive, but we’re sure that this will be fine tuned in a later build.

It’s pretty wacky stuff. Who would have thought that Microsoft’s Kinect would work on a piece of Sony hardware? Check out the video below and let us know your thoughts on it. Does the PS3 really do everything?!

Firefox 4 Vs Internet Explorer 9 Vs Chrome 10: Which Browser is Better?

Firefox 4 Vs Internet Explorer 9 Vs Chrome 10: Which Browser is Better?

Now that Mozilla, Microsoft and Google have released their respective Firefox 4, IE9 and Chrome 10 (latest version) web browsers, we want to know which one you favor the most. Have you tried all three and decided on a winner or are you still thinking about which one is the best?

Just a few hours ago we told you that Mozilla had put the full version of Firefox on their FTP servers for anyone to download, despite the fact that the browser isn’t officially released until sometime tomorrow (March 22).

Meanwhile, Microsoft went live with Internet Explorer 9 on March 14th, and followed this with an announcement saying that they had accumulated 2.35 million downloads during the first 24 hours, a figure which they were pretty pleased with. However, as proven on our IE9 problems thread, there are a lot of you who are experiencing issues with the new version, so a patch may need to be released to keep users happy.

Then onto the silent assassin, aka Google Chrome, as Google swiftly rolled out the latest version of Chrome 10 around two weeks ago. We ran a similar problem thread which you can check out here, but there doesn’t appear to be any major problems which is a credit to Google and their team.

So with that in mind, which browser are you currently using at the moment? Excluding the likes of Safari and Opera, we want to know which browser you think is the best in terms of speed and overall performance. We’re going to put our necks on the line to say that most of you won’t be choosing IE9, so we think it’s a dogfight between Chrome 10 and Firefox 4.

Vote in our poll below and we’ll be posting the results of it after your feedback.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Life expectancy of new iPhone 5 release

Now that we got around 3 months before the iPhone 5 release date, most rumors have been discussed and some pretty solid specs have leaked, although we're still at square one when it comes to any confirmation of these Apple rumors, WWDC 2011 is when the true iPhone 5 is revealed, and we find out what rumors were really true.

We know that most people want one iPhone 5 model that works with all networks, thanks to the feedback in our recent poll. Now that AT&T is buying T-Mobile, we see this in part due to the Apple iPhone, with some official confirmation from T-Mobile about damage from its network lacking the iPhone. Amazing that the future iPhone 5 could cause be a risk for carriers, if they do not carry it.

There are a few reasons why certain features need to be in the 5th generation iPhone, like NFC, although do the best specs and features increase a phones life expectancy?

Apple update every year, and this could be seen as keeping their tech up-to-date and ahead of the competition, but at the same time these updates cause a lot of pressure for the need to upgrade. What will be the life expectancy of your next phone, maybe even the iPhone 5 if you buy it?

How long do you keep a new phone considering the advanced technology, and speed that tech changes? If you plan to buy the iPhone 5, will you then upgrade to iPhone 6 in 2012?

Xbox 720 Release Date in 2015: Information was Fake, keep dreaming

Xbox 720 Release Date in 2015: Information was Fake, keep dreaming

We recently published an article which reported on the possibility of Microsoft’s next Xbox console being released in 2015 after a image appeared to give the report some weight. However, we can now confirm that the whole story was fake, and the image shown was just a mock up.

Just to recap, student Ben Peterson revealed the supposed image of the Xbox ’720′ over on his website, along with a lengthy statement saying that he was collaborating with Microsoft on new Xbox hardware to be released in 2015.

Well, if you visit the website in question now, you’ll see that the page has been removed, with this statement having disappeared, and that image of the supposed Xbox 360 has gone too.

It has just been confirmed that the information wasn’t real, as Peterson wrote to Eurogamer, stating ‘I’m a student designer, it’s not real’. So there we have it. It was nice while it lasted, but the image didn’t even show anything anyway so we shouldn’t really be too disappointed about this.

However, that doesn’t rule out the possibility of Microsoft teasing something at this year’s E3 2011 event in a few months time. That’s when we should really pay attention to new hardware rumors.

What are your thought on this? Are you disappointed that the information turned out to be fake, or did you not believe it anyway?

Call of Duty Black Ops: First Strike DLC – Download Release Date for PC

Call of Duty Black Ops: First Strike DLC – Download Release Date for PC

We finally have some good news for PC users, as Treyarch has just confirmed a date for the First Strike DLC Download for PC on Call of Duty: Black Ops. The pack is already out on the Xbox 360 and PS3, but you won’t have to wait much longer to play it via Steam.

Treyarch’s information man Josh Olin has just confirmed the date via his Twitter account, and that date is March 25th. Although, those words are from the mouth of Olin himself, the official listing on Steam shows that the DLC will be available on March 26th instead – we’re guessing Treyarch has the last word though.

The price is originally set at $14.99, but if you pre-order it now via Steam, you can get a small discount and just pay $13.49 for it. Just in case you need telling again, First Strike will consist of five new maps. Four multiplayer maps – Berlin Wall, Stadium, Kowloon and Discovery and then there’s also a new zombie map too called Ascension.

The Xbox 360 has had this pack for an eternity now, and the PS3 has only just received it, but at least PC owners will be able to get in on the action this week. How many of you are going to download this for $14.99? It’s worth every penny in our opinion, as the replay value you get from five brand new maps is pretty reasonable we feel.

So just to repeat, this pack is releasing either on March 25th (according to Treyarch), or March 26th (according to Steam).
