Rovio Channels The Easter Bunny in ANOTHER Angry Bird Seasons Update

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 12:30 PM PDT

Despite the fact that they are hard at work on the upcoming update to Angry Bird Rio, Rovio managed to squeeze a little time into their development schedule to release a new Easter themed expansion to Angry Birds Seasons, complete with bunny ears aplenty.  Featuring fifteen new levels of swine assaulting fun, the addition also includes a few new GameCenter achievements, as well as several new and very seasonally appropriate golden eggs.

So now that we have seen St. Paddy’s Day and now Easter updates, what would be next on the hitlist for a fowl fighting frenzy?  Let us know what your prediction is in the comments, but my money is on Cinco De Mayo.  After all, they have already tackled one alcohol bathed holiday, why not embrace a similar flavor south of the border?  Here is to many more nights spent destroying the dreams of maniacal pigs everywhere!

Wordfeud Makes The Rare Jump From Android to iOS

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 12:08 PM PDT

Here’s a story straight out of the “man bites dog” pile. While games making the jump from iOS to Android are commonplace, games going in the other direction are quite rare. Wordfeud is one of the few games to land in that category of Android to iOS ports. Originally launched on Android as an alternative to Words With Friends before Zynga and Newtoy released an Android version of the game, Wordfeud is now available on the App Store. The Scrabble-inspired word game sports asynchronous online multiplayer with push notifications when it’s your move, and works with current Wordfeud user accounts, and the game boasts over 2.5 million registered users to play against. The game does support cross-platform multiplayer between iOS and Android Wordfeud users, and can be played on both platforms with the same user account. The game synchronization between devices appears to be much smoother than Words With Friends’ implementation, as it loads up the current game list faster than Words With Friends does, especially on the Android side of the app. The iOS version is available as a free download on the App Store, with ads that display between moves. However, you can pay a one-time $2.99 in-app purchase to disable ads. Wordfeud is available from the App Store right now.

Business Card Reader Benefits From A New Update

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 11:30 AM PDT

Bestselling business card app Business Card Reader has released a new update set to significantly improve everything possible about it.

For the uninitiated, Business Card Reader sets to save you plenty of time by importing contact information from a business card straight into your iPhone’s address book. We’ve all been there, you’ve been off networking and collecting up many business cards from various potentially useful contacts. Now you’re stuck having to add all that information manually. Scan it in with Business Card Reader and your time is instantly saved. It even works with business cards in other languages or with unusual characters. Jason reviewed it last year and gave it a sterling review with 4.5 stars out of 5.

This latest update hopes to make everything more efficient. There’s improved contact editing courtesy of the new contact editor and there’s a great scanned card preview to check out as you go along. Plus the app is all too happy to highlight symbols that it’s not certain about.

Business Card Reader was already an essential app for the networker, especially for iPhone 4 owners who seemed to have the best results with the scanning engine, but this update sets to make it that bit more useful.

The update is free for owners of the last version. Those who are interested in taking the plunge with the app can purchase it for $5.99.

    Confidence – The Game Review

By Jennifer Allen on April 19th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: TRIVIA PLEASURE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Confidence – The Game offers categories galore with this interesting trivia game.

    Developer: The App House
Price: FREE (in-app purchases available for additional question packs)
    Version Reviewed: 1.0
    Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Trivia games are addictive. At least they are for me. It’s impossible to resist answering just a couple more questions in order to know that you’re better than the AI or the friend you’re playing against. Confidence – The Game certainly offers plenty of categories and some great imagination, but I was a little disappointed to see questions repeating themselves after a time.

The main variation within Confidence and the reason why it’s titled as such is its ability to rank categories depending on how well you think you’ll do. It’s a neat touch as you gain more points for categories that you’re most experienced at, all adding a slight strategic touch to proceedings. With two typical rounds of play, the final round then enables players to wager points on one single question.

Categories are certainly varied. In my time of playing, I encountered everything from College Football, English History, Technology, Games to more specialist subjects such as Entourage and Bond Theme Songs. Questions are biased towards the American market so my British brain struggled on a few – perhaps an ideal opportunity for a future question pack for the Brits and European players – but they’re a good solid mix to cover all interests.

The free version of Confidence includes 600 questions across 90 different categories with the option to download additional question packs priced at $1.99 for 650 questions or $2.99 for 2,000 questions. Even after downloading the larger of the two packs, I found questions being repeated every now and then which was a shame as otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed Confidence. Playing alone, using one of the four difficulty levels, provides a decent challenge and playing against other people via passing the iOS device back and forth is simple and effective.

If it wasn’t for pesky questions being repeated, Confidence would be my new favourite trivia game. As it stands, it’s still in my top three as I love the variety of the categories. Being asked questions on Sea Life and Disney films in the same game certainly keeps you on your toes! For the price (or lack of it if you don’t buy the extra question packs), it’s hard to say no to, especially if you want a game to play with friends and family.

    Strava Makes Cycling More Social

    Posted: 19 Apr 2011 09:30 AM PDT

Biking by its nature is a bit of a solitary activity. Sure, you could choose to go riding with a friend or family member, but most likely you are never on the same page in terms of pacing and/or distance, which makes at least one of the riders have to compromise their own competitive needs.  When you want to let loose and really pull away from the pack, there is nothing more frustrating than having to wait for Uncle Sal to catch his breath because that last chilli dog is catching up with him.

Why not instead allow yourself the full social experience of riding, while not having to deal with any dead weight dragging you down?  The new app Strava Cycling allows you to do just that, while also keeping track of your personal stats, ride after gut wrenching ride.  Some of the software’s unique features include:

    • Record your bike rides, view maps and analyze ride data.
    • Compete for King and Queen of the Mountain honors on auto-detected climbs.
    • Motivate yourself to ride further and faster, and move higher on the leaderboards.
    • Instantly upload your rides to the Strava.com community, where you can track your performance, enter events, and join clubs.

Not only will this app help you to keep better track of your progress throughout the training process, but it will bring out the best in your competitive side as well.  Just imagine getting to the bottom a hill, only to see the top ten people who have completed that climb ahead of you.  This would be amazing in cities with a large population, but be ready to face some stiff challenges from the crowd.  Here is to hoping that some jerk on a moped doesn’t ruin the curve for everyone else!

Strive to make yourself better by taking on the best that your community has to offer.  You will certainly not regret it.

New Stitcher Update Lands on iPad

    Posted: 19 Apr 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Stitcher has been a fixture in the podcasting space for quite some time, but to put it quite bluntly, their iPad app had been leaving users with something to be desired.  Essentially the app was just a blown up version of the iPhone software, doing absolutely nothing to take advantage of the extra real estate that the tablet format allowed.

Luckily, this is now a thing of the past, as the company has announced that there is a new universal extension to the Stitcher tool, that is custom re-built and re-designed from the ground up, to cater to their ever growing iPad consumer base.  Here are some of the new features that just debuted:

    • What's Hot:  Listeners can follow the shows that are trending on Stitcher at any  moment.
    • Featured/New Shows:  Listeners can discover shows related to current interests or popular culture events.
    • Featured Lists: Listeners can see what celebrities – as well as the Stitcher community — are listening to with the new "What's on your Stitcher?" featured playlist.

On top of all of these outstanding improvements, the homepage of the app itself has been re-engineered into a radio news-magazine of sorts, meant to deliver breaking new content that is bound to interest listeners.  Don’t expect to be bombarded with just news, though, because the content suggested will be based off of your previous preferences and subscribed podcasts.

As always, the app will remain free, while bringing you some of the best audio content that the internet has to offer.  I would highly recommend giving this a download, and seeing if it helps to expand your podcasting horizons. After all, there is no such thing as too much of a good thing, right?  Be sure to give it a try and let us know what your thoughts are in the comments below.  Happy listening!

    Futuregram Review

By Chantelle Joy Duxbury on April 19th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: EASY REMINDERS
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Single function, bare-bones reminder system. Cool concept, but lacking in features and robustness. Hoping for more in future versions.

    Developer: Treeness LLC

    Price: 1.99
    Version: 1.0.2

iPhone Integration Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 2.83 out of 5 stars

Futuregram is an easy, simple, single purpose app for sending yourself reminders or messages in the future. Perhaps you want a daily reminder to brush your teeth? Or need to make sure you’ll get a message about picking up Dog Food on the weekend? Futuregram takes a stylized approach to setting your reminders, but lets not get away from what this app really is.

Dress it up in all the old time themes you want, you’ve still just got an alarm clock. Albeit one that does save and notify your notes. So with this in mind, I’ll proceed at the moment to review it as such. The first thing you’ll want in a decent alarm app is the quick ability to set up your future reminders. Luckily, Futuregram does this pretty easily. There’s only two pages within the app (other than the settings) one to set a new reminder, and one for past reminders. The new reminders are easily entered and set on the main page. Once saved, it fires off your reminder to the “sent” page, and awaits the proper time to alert you.

As for the alerts. I had no problem retrieving them as you would a regular alert. It does obey your iPhone settings when it comes to silent mode and the like. However, just like calendar events, and unlike most alarms, there is but one notification, and it does not repeat. There is no snooze, so this is why you’ll likely use this app for notes and reminders instead of actual alarms and notifications.

Overall I found no fatal flaws in the app design or function of this app. However, it did not wow me. While the alarm settings are customize-able to a degree, at this price point, I’d love to see some extra features. Mostly, I was hoping that I’d be able to set a timer for an email, having a ‘Futuregram’ set up to be sent to a friend (SMS, Email or Otherwise) would be great. Twitter or Facebook integration with stylized notes would be cool too. For $1.99 I was seriously hoping for more than something I can basically replicate with my iPhone Calendar reminders. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really. So, because of this its rating is low, were it only $0.99 it would probably rate higher.

Race The Tabletops with Nano Rally HD

    Posted: 19 Apr 2011 07:30 AM PDT

The racing genre is quite possibly one of the most timeless in all of gaming.  Better yet, is that many basic forms of racing titles are fairly easy to code, with console games obviously excluded from that analogy.  That said, anybody who has ever pumped quarter after quarter into top-down arcade racers like Super Off Road can attest to visual fidelity not being a key component to a games success, as long as the control mechanics are precise and fun.  Nano Rally HD is a new iPad game that seems to be piggybacking on this type of thinking in their most release.

In what looks like a more child centric answer to games like Reckless Racing, Sauce Digital’s Nano Rally takes the traditional racing style afforded by the overhead perspective and sets courses on the top of junk scattered locations across a home.  It is the player’s job to bob and weave their way through minefields of inanimate objects including pencils, protractors, marbles and rulers, just to name a few, all the while trying to dust their cartoonishly rendered competition.

This iPad exclusive features over one hundred unique items found throughout twenty five stages, all taking place in six different enviroments including a bedroom, office, kitchen, garden, and garage.  It is hard to take a look at the footage below and not be reminded of childhood days spent racing Hot Wheels cars around the kitchen, with my little brothers in tow.  I guess this is just reflecting the change that technology makes in how children spend their free time.

Be sure to check out the footage of the game below and see if it strikes a nostalgic chord with you as well.  Really, for only ninety-nine cents, this trip down memory lane could very well be worth your time.

    Coconut Dodge Review

By Blake Grundman on April 19th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: FUN AT THE BEACH
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Dodging is the name of the game when you are dealing with mysterious coconuts falling from the heavens.

    Developer: Electronic Arts
    Price: $0.99
    Version: 1.0.9
    App Reviewed on: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.13 out of 5 stars

It is a story as old as time… Crab meets gold, crab falls madly in love with its shiny luster, then dreams of  spending the rest of their lives together.  There is only one obstacle that will prevent this eternal love from being everlasting: coconuts.   Really, this is the only way that one could really wrap their brain around the mechanics of Coconut Dodge.

Just as the name would imply, your main character, which just so happens to be a crab, is wandering from left to right across a beachfront, trying to avoid coconuts that are apparently raining down from the heavens.  Scattered amongst this falling debris are assorted treasures in the form of gold bricks and goblets, diamonds, and the occasional ruby or two.  While these items jettison towards the ground with ever increasing rates of speed, the task of navigating the sand covered minefield becomes more and more difficult, ultimately resulting in your demise.  But you continue to trudge on, all in the name of GOLD!

That, in a nutshell, is virtually all that can be said about Coconut Dodge because, to put it quite bluntly, that is everything there is to the game.  All that you really get to see is a crab scuttling from left to right across the screen, all the while trying to match your last high score.  The problem is that these scores are not propagated via GameCenter, but rather Facebook of all things.  This is a curious choice to say the least, but really, what else would you expect from a game that centers around the shenanigans of a meandering crustacean.

The videogame equivalent of War and Peace, this is not.  What you can expect is to waste a few minutes of your life, enjoying the antics of a crazy Caribbean crab, just looking to get his share of a small fortune.  It is the kind of distraction that anyone can appreciate, as long as they are not setting the bar of expectations too high.  Scuttle out to the App Store and give it a chance.  You may be surprised at what you find.

Glu Releases New Family-Friendly Freemium Game: Bug Village

    Posted: 19 Apr 2011 06:04 AM PDT

Since Glu Mobile made a shift to primarily releasing freemium games, their games have been primarily action-oriented games, like Gun Bros., Contract Killer, and the recently released Men vs. Machines. Bug Village is something else entirely – a family-friendly freemium game from Glu that is a more familiar farming-type game.

The game has you building and curating a tiny village for bug people. Your goal is to try to increase your population as high as possible by leveling up to increase your population cap of bugs and bees. You do this by building more houses, but to build more, you have to use the game’s primary currency, acorns. You acquire acorns by sending ants to harvest resources from piles and sending bees to harvest nectar, both of which go towards your total acorn count. You’ll occasionally have to help ladybugs who have fallen on their back and can’t get up by tapping on them, and ward off stink bugs by tapping on them 3 times until they disappear; both activities will net you experience points. Your bugs will get hungry over time, so you have to buy them food to replenish the village’s collective hunger bar.

Otherwise, the game follows the standard mechanics we’ve seen from other Glu games. It consists of a 2-tiered currency system, consisting of Acorns that can be earned through in-game tasks, and Coins that you can only acquire by paying for them or by completing offers like downloading free apps. Most items are bought with acorns, but some items can only be bought with coins. Coins are also used to speed up building and resource collection. The game engine is entirely 3D, and supports the Retina Display. The game is a universal app, but there’s no cross-device save synchronization yet, so you can’t play across multiple devices. The launch of Bug Village, being more focused on family-friendly audiences, is coincidentally interesting considering the recent lawsuit alleging that Apple was out to defraud parents of money through in-app purchases by allowing other family-friendly freemium titles like Smurfs Village on the App Store. Bug Village includes a warning that buying additional coins or acorns will cost you real money on the screen where you can purchase them. Parents worried that their kids might spend their money by buying acorns and coins can disable in-app purchases can be restricted from the Settings app, under General -> Restrictions. Bug Village is available as a free download from the App Store.
