New “Undo” Bar in Mobile Gmail for iPad and iPhone

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 08:29 PM PDT

Over the last couple of years, Google has been working double shifts to make its web apps as good as – if not better than – native apps. For instance, since the launch of the iPad, Google has been tweaking Google Docs in order to make it more mobile-friendly, and released several updates to the cloud-based service, constantly improving the user experience on the iPad, the iPhone and Android.

Earlier today, another Google service, Gmail, went through a new revision, and now allows users to undo their actions directly from their iOS device: for instance, if you delete a message by mistake, or label it incorrectly, the new Mobile Gmail will allow you to undo your action via a single tap, instead of having to dig the message out of the Trash.

The new “undo” bar will allow you to undo four key actions: archive, delete, add or remove a label, or move a message/conversation. Every time you perform one of these actions, Gmail will display a new yellow window that will remind you about it, and will offer to undo it, if you choose to do so.

The bar will stay on your screen for a while, even if you navigate to another page within Gmail, so if you don't catch your mistake in time, you will still be allowed to undo it at a later stage.

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 06:03 PM PDT

If you have loved ones deployed with the military overseas, you know how difficult the experience can be.  Where are they?  Are they safe?  What are the living and working conditions?  Worry mounts and the list of questions goes on and on.

Now military families, as well as the general civilian population, can access the latest news stories, photo galleries and on-demand content using Military 24/7 for iPad created by the Third U.S. Army’s Defense Video and Imagery Distribution System (DVIDS).

“As communications among the American people and their military have evolved, we felt compelled to come up with a creative and interactive way for our military service members to connect to the interested public sector,” said Maj. Scott Betts, DVIDS director of operations. “The public seeks the news they are interested in via methods they choose. It is not just about watching a broadcast news source any longer. This app will allow mobile users to obtain informative reports, photos and videos from the field with the tap or swipe of a finger.”

Created by deployed military service members, Military 24/7 includes a wide variety of information covering missions and operations around the globe.  It combines strong visual elements with text stories, photo galleries and on-demand content, all frequently updated by service members.  You can choose between top military news stories, a collection of the latest videos and extensive photo galleries, or filter material instantly based upon branch.  Discover something of interest?  Share information with friends and family via email, Facebook and Twitter.

Military 24/7 is an impressive collection of information from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.  ”It is a new way to provide the public and media outlets alike with transparent access to military news and insight around the world,” said Anthony Burian, director of technical operations.

So whether you’re the mother of a service member, a true patriot or someone curious about the U.S. Military, you can download Military 24/7 from the App Store for Free.

Forgotten Places – Lost Circus HD for iPad – Game Review

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 03:33 PM PDT

If you've ever played a good escape game then you will want to dive headfirst into Forgotten Places – Lost Circus HD, a puzzle and logic game with incredible high definition graphics. The world you enter is shrouded in secrecy, and only through completing challenging mini-games and finding once forgotten and lost objects will you solve the mystery of the Lost Circus.

The game has an extremely deep storyline that is easy to follow throughout play, but for those who prefer the simple joys of finding things and logic mini-games, there is an option to skip all the cut scenes. Players start out in the present and conscious day, where the circus has been abandoned and run down for quite some time, but intermittently we are transported to the colorful and enchanting dream world to help the circus find their lost tiger cub.

The items to find and the puzzles start out easy and depending on the difficulty chosen at the beginning, have the potential to get very much harder along the way. Be sure not to forget about the hint function in the top left corner, but also remember not to rely on it too much because it takes time to recharge. If you get stuck on a puzzle and the hints aren't helping, there is also a skip option that will solve the puzzle for you and keeps the story flowing.

While we are in the dream of our heroine Joy, we help out a number of characters who all have their own plan of how to get their spectacular tiger cub back to the circus. The useful objects that you are asked to find however, are not come upon so simply. Whenever players look for one specific item, they first have to clear the space of other items as well. In most new areas a puzzle will pop up and must be solved to continue but fear not, for most of them can be skipped or hints can be used before frustration ever sets in. Also, be prepared to solve puzzles in the real world that help you advance through the run down version of the circus getting you one step closer to solving the strange quandary.

What I liked: The graphics are the first thing anyone will notice about the game, and for good reason. Additionally, Forgotten Places – Lost Circus is of epic length, very much unlike the two minutes worth of amusement you can get out of most online escape games, so it is good for long trips or a rainy day inside.

What I didn’t like: Some of the logic puzzles had an all or nothing skip option to them; I would rather see a hint button that could get you on your way rather than completing the whole thing for you.

To buy or not to buy: If you're like me and love escape games, this is one that you won't soon put down. With different levels of difficulty there are hours of fun to be had tapping your way through the circus in both its forms. This game is for all ages, strengthening logic for anyone who plays.

‘Hitpad – See What’s Up’ – Keep Up with Headlines On Your iPad

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 07:45 AM PDT

Applications like Pulse and Flipboard have been quite popular with iPad fans. Both applications have brought visually appealing designs, and ways to keep up with news, your friends and your cyberspace social circles.

A new application on the App Store, Hitpad, brings you snippets or quick snapshots of all the latest news and important topics that are hot trends on the current day, so that you become aware in no time and with very little effort.

Hitpad is definitely a quick way to find out what's going on in the news directly on your iPad. The application pulls in multiple sources and hot trends, and presents the stories to you in a very organized way with a visually appealing design.

The developer, Instant Discover, designed the application in such a way that it detects what people across the web are interested in by checking various media sites, Twitter, videos and much more. The goal is that you get access to hot news across many topics and categories without the need to hit multiple sites and social network streams.

For example, if you tap on a listed subject like “Tornadoes”, the application will display a screen full of headlines about storms and tornadoes, videos and tweets. All you have to do is simply click on the headers, and the application will take you to the source using its built-in browser.

The current version of the application does not allow you to personalize the topics or news feeds that should automatically load when you launch the app. The application brings hot news stories around the following categories – Top Stories, Entertainment, Business, Sports, Technology. However, you can always search for a specific topic and Hitpad will bring up the latest stories around that. In addition, the application will learn your interests, and will start displaying articles associated with your searches.

Hitpad’s user interface is quite nice. There is no requirement for you to learn how to navigate, it is very intuitive. You can share stories via Facebook, Twitter and by email. I liked that once you bring up a story, Hitpad will instantly display related stories, which certainly makes it easy for you to browse around and learn lots about a specific topic or headline.

I would like to see some custom settings added to the application. For example, there is no way for me to create a new section or category. It would be nice to be able to create your own categories.

Hitpad is a free download for your iPad. The application definitely has great potential, and it is a very good download for your tablet. I recommend you give it a try, especially since it’s a free app, and one that could become quite handy when looking for what’s going on in the world of news.
