Multiple A5 Chips for iPad 2 – A5 Processor in iPhone 5?

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 08:42 PM PST

Earlier today, as anticipated, Apple released iOS 4.3 for iPad which is the same version of iOS that the all new iPad 2 will ship with starting this Friday.  Developers quickly dug into the firmware to see what they could find and they were able to dig up some interesting information.

According to their findings, it looks like the new A5 Dual Core processor will not only be used in the soon to be released iPad 2, but the iPhone 5 as well.  The current iPhone 4 uses the single-core A4 processor and although many predict the A5 processor will be used in the iPhone 5 which is expected to be released this summer, these developers now offer up some proof.

@chronic was able to find the version of A5 processor (S5L8940) for the upcoming CDMA, GSM and WiFi iPad 2 models.

  • iPad2,1 (K93AP) = WiFi.
  • iPad2,2 (K94AP) = GSM.
  • iPad2,3 (K95AP) = CDMA

The S5L8940 is the same processor type listed for the N94, which is believed to be the code name for the upcoming iPhone 5. FilippoBiga provided a screen shot of some of the iOS 4.3 N94 code where the S5L8940 is listed.

Now we’ll just have to wait and see what the summer brings.

iOS 4.3 Brings Live MLB.TV and NBA Games to Apple TV

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PST

Alright baseball and basketball fans. Just in time before the MLB regular season and the NBA playoffs start, Apple TV is now bringing you live game streaming service to your home.

These new capabilities have now become available as part of the iOS 4.3 software update released earlier today.

Business Insider has noted that the new update allows you to stream lots of baseball games through the Apple TV. MLB has already updated their website to make it official.

The new service requires a subscription to MLB.TV. With a subscription, you will have access to LIVE and archived HD quality games. The MLB.TV subscriptions are available in two packages – one available for $19.99 per month ($99.99 per year), the other one available for $24.99 per month ($119.99 per year).

For basketball fans, the new software update gives you access to the NBA League Pass feature, which allows you to enjoy free access to scores and other game data. You can also upgrade to gain access to LIVE and archived NBA games. The NBA League Pass is offering two streaming options via your Apple TV – one at $64.95 to watch games for up to seven teams throughout the season, or the other one for $99.95 to access all teams’ games.

Even though MLB.TV streaming has been supported by Roku and Boxee for a while, it’s nice to see Apple getting their gadget into the game. If only Apple would make plans to open up an App Store for the Apple TV in the future. That would certainly open additional possibilities to developers and content providers across the board.

iOS 4.3 for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Apple TV Out

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 11:59 AM PST

Boy Genius Report was off by one day, as instead of yesterday, iOS 4.3 was released earlier today, at 10 A.M. Pacific Time. The update is the same build already offered to iOS developers since last week, and is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, first generation iPad, iPad 2, third generation iPod touch, and finally, second generation Apple TV.

The new version of iOS brings several new features to the table, primarily the personal hotspot for the iPhone 4, as well as full AirPlay video streaming support, even for third-party apps. The new operating system also includes a customizable mute/rotation switch, a much faster JavaScript engine for Safari, and the necessary API to allow iPad users to use the subscription service offered by iTunes.

Note that Verizon iPhone 4 users will have to wait, as the update is not compatible with their device yet (Verizon iPhone owners already have some of the new features in their current iPhone version).

To update your device, simply plug it in your Mac or PC, fire up iTunes, and hit the “Update” option.

VMware Releases Free iPad View Client – Control PCs from your iPad

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 09:49 AM PST

If you’re an IT manager running VMware on your servers,  your job just got a little easier today.  VMware, leader in PC virtualization, just released their free VMware View client for iPad.  The client allows users to remotely interact and control a Windows server and applications directly from their iPad.

VMware is not the first to offer remote PC control via the iPad but the VMware View iPad client has a few things which set it apart from the competition. With the release of the iPad 2 just around the corner, we fully expect to see more enterprises jumping on the iPad bandwagon, so VMware’s timing couldn’t be better.

VMware designed the client from the ground up specifically for the iPad and incorporated features that we haven’t seen on other VNC clients.  The app not only supports all the standard multitouch gestures but also lets users add an onscreen trackpad, keyboard or function keys to tailor their environment, giving them a choice of which input options they prefer. If virtual inputs aren’t your thing, the app also supports iPad keyboard docks, Bluetooth keyboards and can even be connected to a remote monitor using a standard iPad VGA connector cable.

As you would expect, the client app is tightly tuned to work with the company’s VMware View server software. The client is able to connect to servers over either WiFi or 3G using the PC over IP (PCoIP) display protocol.  Secure connections are easily enabled for customers using VMware View Security Server ensuring sensitive data is not compromised over remote connections.

VMware, with its deep enterprise customer base, is pushing VMware View Client for iPad as a way to free workers from laptops or desktop PCs and move things to the cloud.  The mobility that the iPad brings is a key selling point for many IT departments trying to help their users gain efficiency.

Kirk Larson, Chief Information Officer for Children’s Hospital Central California, said in a press release, “The iPad could fundamentally change the way our clinicians and staff approach their IT needs. Now with VMware View Client for iPad, our caregivers can have the freedom to access a patient’s electronic medical records anywhere in the hospital via an iPad on a secure VMware View desktop. This could not only improve patient care but may enable us to dramatically reduce costs and simplify device management.”

As nice as VMware View Client for iPad is, it is missing a few features which might be critical for some enterprise shops.  The app doesn’t provide support for other display methods like VNC or RDP and only supports VMware View 4.6 or later so enterprise customers may need to upgrade before they can take advantage of VMware View Client for iPad.

VMware View Client for iPad has a lot to offer if you’re a VMware shop looking to add tablets to your workforce.  The product’s tight VMware integration, flexible screen options and best of all its price (FREE) make it a great option for IT managers.

An iOS 5 Apple Media Event in April?

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 08:34 AM PST

The iOS 4.3 update could potentially be released today. This is according to a report from MacRumors, and a reader that asked an Apple representative. Also, in case you didn’t notice, a new iTunes 10.2.1 update has appeared superseding the iTunes 10.2 update that was released last week.

In addition, on the heels of the upcoming iOS 4.3 release, a new rumor has surfaced indicating that Apple may be planning an April media event to introduce iOS 5 and a new MobileMe service.

The new iOS 5 rumor comes from German site Macerkopf.de, which claims to have received word from an Apple source indicating an annual iOS roadmap event in April. The expectation is for Apple to reveal their iOS 5 plans and a revamped MobileMe service.

Many of us have been expecting Apple to introduce a cloud-based model for their very successful mobile operating system.

Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple has been exploring a major update of their MobileMe online storage service. The current MobileMe service allows us to store some of our data in a central location, so that we can synchronize calendars and contacts across our computers and other devices. Apple offers the service for an annual subscription fee of $99.

However, according to the Wall Street Journal source, Apple could revamp the MobileMe service by offering it for free, and let the service become our “personal locker”. In other words, MobileMe would become a cloud service where we can place our personal data such as music, photos, videos, and we would simply synchronize our iOS devices with the cloud.

If we try to make sense of Apple’s recent decision to discontinue the sale of MobileMe retail boxes, we could argue the change is imminent. Other rumors have also talked about an improved “voice navigation” feature for the iPhone that would allow us to control the device via voice commands as well.

There are plenty of rumors about MobileMe, iOS 5, and the iPhone. We’ve also heard about the new iPhone 5 releasing most likely this summer. If we take into consideration last year’s April event (iPad announcement), it is not surprising to see Apple possibly planning another media event next month to announce their new iOS 5 and MobileMe plans.
