| iPad 2s Sold Out Across Much of the Country Posted: 12 Mar 2011 11:56 AM PST
At Apple stores in Dallas we witnessed over 1,000 people in line at local area Apple Stores. These same stores witnessed lines of only 200-400 people on opening day last year. A mall employee we spoke with said this was the longest line they had ever had for an Apple event, easily outpacing the popular launch of the iPhone 4 earlier last year. Based on our own informal research and tips from readers, demand across the country seems to have exceeded most analyst’s wildest expectations. We were surprised to see that in the lines we visited, over 50% of those waiting were first time iPad buyers. We called over 30 local Best Buy, Target and Walmart stores to find out their inventory levels last night and again this morning. We found that most major Target and Walmarts received an extremely limited supply with stores reporting they received only five iPads per store and that all were Black 16GB iPads with WiFi. Many Target stores reported that they didn’t even receive their initial orders due to shipping issues. Best Buy stores appeared to have received larger shipments, with many local stores reporting initial shipments of several hundred iPads. Most of these units were completely gone by the end of the night and those units remaining were largely Verizon models. Apple Retail Stores seemed to have received the largest inventories but also had the largest crowds. At the local Apple stores we visited, customers reported Apple selling out of all AT&T based models within the first two hundred customers and that essentially all 3G models (Verizon and AT&T) were gone within the first four hundred customers. Many customers across the country have echoed these findings. We called several local Apple stores again this morning to see if they had received new inventory overnight. All stores said they received new units but quantities appear extremely limited with most stores only receiving around 50 units. Apple employees said the new quantities would not be enough to meet the demand of customers already standing in line at Apple stores this morning. By the afternoon, all Apple stores we contacted were completely sold out of all iPad models and configurations. Apple employees also said that the earliest they would receive new shipments would be this coming Monday as they don’t get shipments on Sunday. When we called Target, Walmart and Best Buy stores, we had similar results. All stores we contacted had not received new inventory and most said they did not expect to receive any before the middle of next week. Best Buy store employees we spoke with recommended customers come into stores to pre-order so that when the store does receive stock, they would be first on the list to get one. Based on our purely unscientific calculations, it appears Apple is on track to sell around 300,000 – 400,000 units this opening weekend in the US. If inventory levels were higher, we think Apple could have doubled sales and potentially even hit 1 million units during the first iPad 2 launch weekend. » Related posts:

| iFixit Tears Apart iPad 2 WiFi – Take a Peek at What’s Inside Posted: 12 Mar 2011 09:39 AM PST
One of the their more interesting finds was the fact the iPad 2 comes with a 1GHz dual core A5 processor with 512 MB of memory. Apple kept us in the dark as to the exact processor speed and memory amounts in the new iPad 2. As has already been reported, both cameras are low resolution so you’re iPad 2 is not replacement for your digital camera, but I doubt very many people were expecting their iPad 2 to be a point and shoot alternative. Although Apple put in a larger speaker port on the new iPad 2, the speakers are smaller than the original iPad’s. However, in our casual sound test we found the iPad 2 seemed louder and clearer than the original iPad. On a more worrisome note, the new larger glass front on the iPad 2 may be beautiful, but the glass is thinner and lighter than what iFixit found in the original iPad. The thinner glass may be more prone to break when dropped compared to the thicker glass in the original iPad. We recommend users keep an eye on their iPad 2 and give it some extra TLC until we hear how well the glass holds up in the field.

| iPad 2: QuickShot with Dropbox Simplifies Your Photo Uploading Posted: 12 Mar 2011 08:05 AM PST
If you do have your brand new tablet, let us inform you about one application that seems to be gaining a lot attention, and could be a great companion for your iPad 2 when taking pictures. QuickShot was officially updated yesterday on the App Store. The application simplifies the process of uploading photos to Dropbox. Basically, every picture you take with your new iPad 2 will immediately be uploaded to the Dropbox service. This can become quite handy when taking pictures during your trips. You can simply take pictures and have them automatically uploaded to your Dropbox account, and you can share the images with anyone on the go. For those not familiar with Dropbox, it’s a service that offers you some free space in the cloud for your files. The service will automatically sync your cloud storage space with the folder of your choice on your Mac or PC. Dropbox for iPad instantly allows you to view these files on the go, as long as you are connected via 3G or WiFi. One feature I liked about the QuickShot application is the background queuing capability. The application allows you to continuously take pictures with your iPad 2 while it creates a background queue for photos that are been captured. Another nice feature is that file uploads continue to process even after the application is closed. In addition, all uploads preserve the image metadata. QuickShot also allows you to configure flash modes, capture quality, geo-tagging, and file upload path, and it also works with both the front and back cameras on your iPad 2. However, video support is not available yet. That is a feature that needs to be added quickly. The developer has confirmed that video support is coming soon. QuickShot with Dropbox is a universal application, which means it is compatible with your new iPad 2, first generation iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and fourth generation iPod touch. The application is available now for only $0.99. » Related posts:
