Piper Jaffray Discovers iPad 2 Sold Out

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 09:59 PM PDT

Gene Munster’s team from Piper Jaffray hit the iPad 2 lines in New York City and Minneapolis on Friday interviewing prospective buyers.  During their investigation, the team contacted retailers such as Target and Best Buy looking for stores in iPad 2 inventory.  The survey’s findings were released Sunday night, according to Fortune, and some of the statistics were quite interesting and matched our earlier observations:

  • Munster estimates sales of 400,000 to 500,000 for the iPad 2 this weekend, compared with 300,000 for the first generation device in its first weekend last year.
  • His team was unable to find a single available iPad 2, despite their extensive weekend search.
  • 70% of iPad 2 buyers were new to the iPad.
  • 47% of buyers were purchasing a 3G model, which carries a $130 premium.
  • 41% purchased the 32GB iPad 2, up from 32% who bought the 32GB version of the original iPad. The 64GB models also gained a slight share.
  • 65% of buyers owned an iPhone, 24% owned a Kindle (up from 13% of original iPad buyers), but only 6% plan to read with their iPad (down from 19% in Piper Jaffray’s first iPad survey).
  • 17% expect to use apps and play games, up from 9%, which suggests that the App Store ecosystem is growing.

The number of new buyers was particularly significant, says Munster:

“We believe this shows Apple is expanding its base of iPad users, which is critical to maintaining its early lead in the growing tablet market. As the user base grows Apple’s lead widens, and the company has a proven track record of building unmatched brand loyalty, which we believe will be a potent combination as the tablet market evolves.”

Unfortunately the members of our PadGadget team were among those turned away at the store because of a lack of inventory.  We checked with a number of retailers ourselves this weekend, attempting to locate the hot new gadget, only to be told every place we called had sold out and had no idea when additional stock would arrive.  What about you?  Did you get the iPad 2 you were looking for this weekend?

Details of the Piper Jaffray survey are shown in the table below:

iOS 4.3 Jailbreak Compatible with Windows Released, iPad 2 Already Jailbroken

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 08:40 PM PDT

So far, iPad and iPhone users who also happen to be PC users could not jailbreak their iOS 4.3 powered device easily, as tools capable of jailbreaking iOS 4.3 are only compatible with Macs. As of earlier today, things changed, as a new Windows-compatible jailbreak called sn0wbreeze hit the streets.

The new jailbreak is compatible with first generation iPad, as well as iPhone 3GS/4, and third/fourth generation iPod touch. iPad 2 users, you will need to wait for the next update to be able to use the jailbreak, as it is not compatible with your device yet (rejoice though, as a new iPad 2 jailbreak is on its way, see after the break).

sn0wbreeze is a tethered jailbreak, which means that you will need to plug your iPad to your PC and run the tool each time you need to reboot your tablet.

The jailbreak was put together by iH8sn0w, an iPhone hacker. Even though it is the only Windows-compatible iOS 4.3 jailbreak we’ve seen so far, the tool is beta, so use it cautiously.

As for iPad 2 users, be patient, as Dev Team member comex is currently working on a new jailbreaking method compatible with the iPad 2. While the tool is weeks away from a full blown release, comex already poster a couple of pictures of an iPad 2 running Cydia.

iPad 2 Online Shipments Slip to 3-4 Weeks, Some Orders Arrive This Week

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 11:41 AM PDT

The iPad 2 demand has definitely exceeded what happened last year with the first generation iPad. The supply situation has worsened as shown by Apple on their online store.

All models of the iPad 2 are now estimated to ship within 3 to 4 weeks. PadGadget witnessed the demand last Friday when lines of customers looking to get their hands on the new device were often in the thousands, and many unfortunately were turned away empty handed after a few hours.

Today, we called again multiple Apple stores and other retailers including Target and Best Buy. All of them still out of stock of most iPad 2 models. Several customers have complained, including some retail locations considering that some stores only received very few iPads and others did not receive any shipments at all.

However, two of our readers have received formal notification from Apple that their iPad 2s have shipped. It is worth noting that these two readers did place their online orders in the early hours of March 11. Basically, as soon as Apple opened their online orders.

We don’t know yet how many iPad 2 units Apple have sold in the first weekend. One thing is for sure, the iPad 2 demand seems to be definitely stronger than originally expected.

Editor’s Note: Thanks RobbyJ and Maxz for the tip!
