Problems Continue to Grow with iPad 2 Sales

Posted: 19 Mar 2011 09:41 PM PDT

It should come as no surprise that the current iPad 2 supply level doesn’t even come close to meeting the demand for the popular new device.  Our PadGadget team has waited in line for hours on multiple occasions attempting to purchase the iPad 2s of our choice — to date only one of us has been able to get the configuration we want.  Based on what we are reading online, there are lots of other people out there in the same boat.

For the sake of discussion, let’s say you are still waiting to score your iPad 2 and you’re standing in line outside the Apple Store patiently waiting to make your big purchase.  While there, you begin to suspect there are others standing in line along with you for the sole purpose of buying iPads to sell on eBay or the black market in China for two to three times the US selling price.  According to reports from the New York Post, that’s exactly what is happening.

The New York Post reveals a scheme being carried out by a ”cutthroat Asian group” to purchase as many iPad 2s as possible from the flagship Apple store on Fifth Avenue at 59th.  With approximately 200 Asians in line outside the store, group leaders hand out money to the scammers, eventually allowing them to enter the store, buy iPads and wipe out the stock.  ”‘We buy from here, then sell,’ one of the organizers gloated outside the store, standing near one of several bulging, oversized shopping bags filled with the hot devices.”

Frustration from “legitimate” customers is now turning to anger because of situations such as these.  With fights reportedly breaking out in front of Apple Stores, a Manhattan event planner says she’s been to the Fifth Avenue store three times since Friday and still has no iPad 2.  She even confronted a guy with the bags full of iPads, only to be laughed at.  After talking to the manager at the store, she was told there was nothing Apple could do.

An Apple Store employee at the Fifth Avenue location admitted he didn’t like what was going on, but couldn’t do much about it.  ”‘Listen, we all know what’s going on here. I find it sad and disgusting,” the worker said. “These people are preventing ordinary folks from getting their hands on an iPad.’”

Blog site it’s all tech posted a letter written by an admitted iPad 2 scalper asking for clarification on why Apple is preventing him from purchasing as many iPads as he wants.  This particular individual says he has waited in line for up to 21 hours to purchase his iPads and has been “such a great customer for this past week.”  During one of his recent stays, he was told by Apple store employees that he would not be allowed to purchase any additional iPads because it was “unfair for the other people.”

I don't understand why it is unfair for others when I get in line to buy more iPads everyday before everyone else and wait the whole time. That's how anyone else would do it so why can't I? In reality this is unfair to me. If others want to get iPad 2s then they better get in line before me. I'll be there again and again hoping they realize that I am a customer as well and just want to purchase some iPads.

So what do you think about the people standing in line to purchase iPads, only to sell them overseas for a substantial profit?  Do you agree with Apple refusing to sell to individuals they see returning to the store day after day to buy up stock?  Or, do you think if the individual has the money and waits in line, they should be able to buy all the iPads they want?

If you agree with Apple’s restrictions, what else do you think can be done to prevent “fraudulent” behavior?  Perhaps Apple should require purchases be made with a credit card in order to track activity.  The problem then is, what if a potential customer does not have a credit card?  So many possible scenarios to consider….

If, on the other hand, you fall into the later category, you’ll be happy to know the admitted iPad reseller included the following in his letter, “I'll admit that I still received iPad 2s today from some unknown employees of mine so those twelve hours were not a complete loss.”

The problem with the iPad 2 stock will eventually pass, just like it did last year.  But until then, the situation will remain frustrating for potential customers waiting to get their hands on the second generation device.

Become a Millionaire by Putting Together an iOS App

Posted: 19 Mar 2011 08:50 PM PDT

An infographics released by instantShift and Wix reveals a few interesting facts about iOS developers and their apps. The average price iOS apps sell for on the App Store is about $2.45, which translates into $1.72 for developers, after Apple takes its 30 percent cut.

Based on this average profit per app of $1.72, a typical developer must therefore sell 581,395 apps to become a millionaire – something only a handful of iOS developers managed to achieve thus far.

According to instantShift and Wix, lead iOS apps developers make between $85,000 and $117,500 per year, for developers working at large development shops.

Interestingly enough, simple apps like Doodle Jump made their developers millionaires in a matter of months, so if you have a great idea for a new app, you may be able to join the very exclusive club of folks the App Store made millionaires.
