| Samsung Galaxy Tab: WiFi Release Date, Price and CTIA 2011 Reveal Posted: 14 Mar 2011 03:06 AM PDT You may not be aware of this, but Samsung actually hasn’t released a WiFi model of their popular Galaxy Tab device yet, although they are currently planning to do so soon. The device is set to be revealed at CTIA 2011 this month, but we may have the key information already for you. That information has apparently surfaced from a Samsung representative, according to Droid-Life, as they have uploaded an image of a document which reveals the launch date for the WiFi model and also the price as well at retailers. If the details are correct (we’re assuming they are), then the WiFi Galaxy Tab will be available on April 4th, priced at $399 which is pretty reasonable. Don’t forget though that this is the 1st gen Galaxy Tab we’re talking about, not the recently announced Galaxy Tab 10.1 which will be coming with a 1GHz dual-core processor. The 7-inch will come with outdated specs such as Android 2.2 Froyo and a 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, unlike the 10.1 which comes with a dual-core chip as we mentioned above, and also Android 3.0 Honeycomb on top of other hardware delights. How many of you are willing to pay $399 for the WiFi model with those kind of specs though? Samsung are also planning to unveil the Galaxy Tab 8.9 as well, so they are certainly keeping busy. | St. Patrick’s Day: Make 2011 The New Green Posted: 14 Mar 2011 02:55 AM PDT Although wearing something green on St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) is an age-old concept, it could well be classed as an outdated one. Rather than scouring your wardrobe for something green to wear, you could always go and get yourself an eco-friendly "green" gadget instead. There are many "green," eco-friendly gadgets to choose from these days, and Lauren Fairbanks over on the sheknows.com website has provided a few ideas. For example, you could always go out and purchase the Voltaic Generator Solar-Energy Laptop Bag. If you're fed up with having to charge your laptop every few hours while you're on the go, then this is the ideal gadget for you. The Voltaic Solar-Energy laptop bag has 15 watts of power, and is manufactured from eco-friendly, recycled soda bottles. Another great gadget to consider is the Clean Energy Water Clock. The eco-clock is attached to 2 small pots that you grow either a flower or a plant in. The eco-friendly gadget then uses the energy from the damp soil or water to run the mechanism of the clock. The third gadget mentioned is the Thinksound Wooden Headphones. These earphones are both eco-friendly and user-friendly. They feature trendy looking wooden earpieces that offer a clearer and crisper sound, as well as minimizing ambient sounds. Do you own any "green," eco-friendly gadgets? For more coverage: |
| Killzone 3 Patch: Major Problems Reported After Downloading Posted: 14 Mar 2011 02:45 AM PDT Guerrilla Games' Killzone 3 may have received some pretty impressive reviews since launching last month, but a few nagging issues have left some online players frustrated. The developer responded by releasing a patch for the game, which was meant to have fixed all the issues. However, according to a recent article by Jonathan Leack over on the playstationlifestyle.net website, the patch (v1.04) appears to have created more issues. Many gamers have reported major problems since downloading the patch a couple of days ago. Among the problems that users have been experiencing are disconnections mid-game, severe lag and network connection problems, which makes it very hard to join a game. Guerilla Games has now stated that they are currently working on addressing the said issues. The new v1.04 patch is said to include fixes for both lag and network errors 8001, 8013 and 10002, as well as a fix for an incorrect message that occurred when players were attempting to join a Clan game that an online friend was currently playing in. It also includes improvements to the Killzone 3 gameplay. For example, players are now said to have more stamina by default, the sprint length has been increased – although the recharge timer has been adjusted to compensate – and the range in which friendly players can be revived has been increased. You can read more about the v1.04 patch through the playstationlifestyle.net website. Have you been experiencing any of the said problems since downloading the new patch for Killzone 3? Daniel Chubb got to spend some hands-on time with Killzone 3 recently, read his review here. For more coverage: |
| Skip iPhone 5 Release to Keep Older Models – Is it really that bad? Posted: 14 Mar 2011 02:25 AM PDT It is becoming almost inevitable that the Apple will introduce the iPhone 5 at their WWDC 2011 event at the start of June, but how many of you are actually planning to buy the device and how many of you believe that older iPhone models are still good enough for you. At the moment, no-one knows the design of the iPhone 5 since Apple has so far managed to avoid a repeat of last year’s iPhone 4 prototype leak, so all we can do now is speculate on what sort of appearance and features the device will have. Obviously the design is going to look different to the iPhone 4, and there’s going to be signficant hardware changes and features to entice iPhone 4 and owners of older models to upgrade to their new device. But for those of you who are currently happy with the likes of the iPhone 3G/3GS and iPhone 4, do you feel the need to upgrade your device straight away, or are you planning to stick with the older models until a price cut or other incentives are announced? There is a good chance that the iPhone 3G and 3GS will receive an upgrade to iOS 5, so actually we’d agree with you if you’ve recently bought an iPhone, there may not be enough new features to warrant you spending another sum of money for the iPhone 5, and let’s face it – it isn’t going to be cheap. This is more important to iPhone 4 owners perhaps, as the current set of features and hardware on the device are still pretty impressive compared to new handsets that are getting announced as we speak. Sure a dual-core processor would be nice, but it’s probably not worth a complete upgrade for – would you agree with this? Where do you stand on this debate? Are you going to keep your current iPhone model, or are you going to upgrade to the iPhone 5 at the first opportunity? For more coverage: |

| NFC Mobile Technology Not to Feature in iPhone 5 Posted: 14 Mar 2011 01:52 AM PDT We have had talk before that the iPhone 5 will feature NFC technology, which enables users to just wave their handset over a special reader to pay for things. But according to some UK carriers the iPhone 5 will not be having the feature this year. Nick Clark from The Independent is reporting that sources from the UK's largest mobile carriers, have said Apple had told them in meetings the technology would not make into this year's iPhone. According to one source the feature will not be included as Apple was worried about "the lack of a clear standard across the industry". But Apple is said to be working on its own version of NFC technology which would link to people's iTunes accounts. This is hoped will feature in a handset released next year. Google released the Nexus S this year which does have the NFC feature inside, and the wireless technology has been backed by GSMA last month. There has been disagreement between operators and handset makers on the standards for widespread adoption. One analyst Carolina Milanesi said that Nokia has been talking about the technology for a long time, but as soon as Apple and Google get involved "NFC will happen". This news comes after British carrier O2 recently revealed plans to have the service with NFC towards the end of this year. Would you like to see NFC technology in the iPhone 5? For more coverage: |
| Official Car Dock for HTC Thunderbolt Priced before Release Posted: 14 Mar 2011 01:16 AM PDT We are still in the midst of the release date confusion for the highly anticipated HTC Thunderbolt handset on Verizon, but we wanted to move away from that slightly to tell you about the official car dock accessory for the handset which has just been revealed and priced. The accessory hasn’t even been announced by Verizon or HTC yet, but that hasn’t stopped a leaked image appearing over at Phandroid. It confirms that the device will be generously priced at just $29.99 when it lands in Verizon stores presumably throughout April. Furthermore, the image also reveals that the car dock will have support for two-way video calls and the device will go into automatic navigation mode once placed inside the dock. It’s a pretty good price we feel, especially when the likes of the HTC EVO car dock sells for around $59.99 – at $29.99 for the Thunderbolt dock, you definitely don’t have anything to complain about in this aspect. There’s no point getting excited about this though if we still don’t know when the device itself will be releasing. You can keep up to date with all the latest news on the HTC Thunderbolt here. We’ll update you when we hear if the alleged March 17 / 21 release date changes. For more coverage: |
| WiFi Motorola Xoom: Release Date and Price at Staples Posted: 13 Mar 2011 11:55 PM PDT You may remember an article we wrote last week which informed you that the highly anticipated WiFi version of the Motorola Xoom would be launching at Staples on April 3rd, but now we have a contradicting report which suggests that it could come much sooner. A new image has been obtained over at Droid-Life and it reveals that the WiFi Motorola Xoom will actually be hitting Staple stores on March 27th, which is obviously earlier than the April 3rd date previously flying around. Furthermore, the flyer also lists a $599.98 price for the WiFi model which is the same as Motorola’s official price for the WiFi model, and obviously more expensive than that discounted $539 price we saw listed at Sam’s Club. The WiFi Xoom is obviously coming at the end of this month or beginning of April, but the date may still change around a bit until then, so be prepared for that. Are you holding out for the WiFi edition, or have you already splashed the cash on a fancy new 3G version of the Xoom? We’ll update you when we hear any further details on pricing or release dates. Don’t forget to keep an eye on Motorola’s Twitter page here for any official updates on their side. For more coverage: |
| COD Black Ops: Best Selling Game in History – Can Modern Warfare 3 Compete? Posted: 13 Mar 2011 11:06 PM PDT Despite being released back in November, Call of Duty: Black Ops continues to receive accolades and this is the biggest of them all. It has just been confirmed that the game is now officially the biggest selling game in the US in history. The news has come from the NDP Group who confirm that Black Ops’ 13.7 million sales in the US beats Nintendo’s Wii Play to become the best selling game in history, as reported from CVG – quite a remarkable achievement when you put it into perspective against some of the amazing games we’ve seen over the years. It also may be a surprise to some of you who were previously thinking that Black Ops would never touch Modern Warfare 2 in terms of both gameplay and sales, but it looks like Treyarch is having the last laugh. The question on our minds though, is will the upcoming Modern Warfare 3 be able to top Black Ops? It’s meant to be releasing in November, just like Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops did, and it will also be going head to head with Battlefield 3 which is worth a mention. Do you think Modern Warfare 3 will beat Black Ops, or has Treyarch’s game set a benchmark? We all said at the time when Modern Warfare 2 was breaking records that it wouldn’t be beaten, so don’t be surprised if Modern Warfare 3 ends up doing the same. Let’s hope Activision and Infinity Ward, what’s left of them do not disappoint. For more coverage: |
| Top iOS 5.0 Predictions: New Features Wishlist Posted: 13 Mar 2011 10:08 PM PDT How happy are you with Apple’s iOS 4.3 software update for mobile devices? It’s fair to say that there wasn’t any groundbreaking features to get excited about although the home sharing feature was a nice addition. With this in mind – what would you like Apple to add for iOS 5? It seems likely that Apple will skip iOS 4.4 and move straight up to iOS 5 for the next software update, which means that the update is expected to be a major one with significant improvements for users to look forward to. We’ve found an excellent article over at TechRadar, which lists 12 areas in which Apple need to improve upon for the release of iOS 5, which we hope will happen at WWDC 2011 in June. Ideas include better folder options, as you can agree that the folder icon at the moment in iOS 4.3 is actually pretty ugly and dull, we’re sure Apple can come up with a better way of organising apps but still having a stylish interface to view them in. Other possible option for iOS 5 is wireless syncing, which we agree would be a great feature to have. This would be particularly useful if you want to sync some fresh music tracks instantly, without having the need to hook up a cable all the time. We’ve also mentioned a few weeks ago that a brand new lock screen could be a possibility for iOS 5. This lock screen may end up looking like a similar design which you currently see on Android devices, meaning that the four digit code could be replaced by a series of dots and patterns which you’ll need to link up. What features do you want in iOS 5? We’ve listed a series of them below in a poll for you to vote on. If you don’t see a feature on the list that you think should be added for iOS 5, leave us a comment below. Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.take 10, put in a poll and ask the users to vote for their most-wanted feature from the list, also to comment on anything else they would like to see. | HTC Incredible 2: Specs and Pictures – Android 2.3 Gingerbread Pre-Loaded? Posted: 13 Mar 2011 09:28 PM PDT We have some good news for those of you who are eagerly waiting for any updates on the HTC Incredible 2, as it looks like we have the biggest reveal yet. The handset will be coming to Verizon, just like it’s predecessor and we have a list of specs to share with you. Perhaps the best news of all, is that we’re hearing that the HTC Incredible 2 will come pre-loaded with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, on top of the HTC Sense UI. We now have the first image of the device to show you below, which has been provided courtesy of Android Spin: It looks pretty slick you have to agree, and we also have the first list of specs which may turn out to be final once Verizon officially announce the device. While the device is similar in appearance to the Droid Incredible S, we’re pleased to say that the specs are slightly improved for the Droid Incredible 2. It won’t come with a dual-core processor, but it will apparently come with a 1Ghz Qualcomm MSM 8655 processor which is a different model to the 1Ghz Qualcomm MSM8255 that will be featured on the Droid Incredible S. The Incredible 2 will also come with an 8 megapixel camera, 1.3MP front camera, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and a 4-inch display screen. What are your thoughts on the design and specs? Did you expect at least a dual-core processor for the Incredible 2? We’ll bring you more details on the handset as we get it. You can view more pictures of the device in the link above. | Japan Earthquake affects Video Game Release Date Posted: 13 Mar 2011 08:33 PM PDT We have some important news for those of you who were looking forward to the release of MotorStorm: Apocalypse on the PlayStation 3 which was due out this year, as we can confirm that the game has now been delayed until further notice as a result of the ongoing events in Japan after the recent earthquake. We should note that this release only appears to have affected the Japanese release of the game, as the European version is still set to go on sale this week, according to TheSilentChief.com. The game has been delayed in Japan due to a number of stages in the game seemingly representing a city which has been destroyed by an earthquake that some people may take offense to, in light of the recent earthquake and tsunami that happened at the end of last week. It does seem a bit strange though if the game is only delayed in Japan, as we’re guessing the content is exactly the same for Europeans and Americans – so why is there no delay enforced there as well? There may be some backlash over this, but we’ll wait and see until Sony give a proper press release on the delay. Let us know if you’ll still be picking up the EU version of the game this week, or if you have decided not to as a mark of respect. For more coverage: |
| White iPhone 4: Apple Tweet’s Release Date ETA – Hints on White iPhone 5? Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:32 PM PDT This is the news that you’ve all been waiting for, as it has been finally confirmed that the White iPhone 4 will definitely be releasing within the next few months, as a surprise Tweet by Apple’s senior VP of worldwide product marketing gave the green light on the elusive device. This is the first time that we’ve had any sort of official confirmation on the status of the White iPhone 4 from Apple, and who would have thought that it would come in the form of a Tweet by a senior member of Apple’s team. Here is the reply that Phil Schiller gave to a user when quizzed about when the White iPhone 4 would be available, as reported from Engadget. ”@airickanderson Hi Eric. The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!)” It also means that the White iPhone 4 will be out before WWDC 2011 kicks off in June, but there is also a good chance that Apple are planning to release their iPhone 5 in White as well – without any delays this time. In terms of confirmations, it doesn’t get more black and white than that. Are you pleased that the device is finally coming, or do you think it’s far too late for Apple to start shipping the white device? It may be worth holding off a few months until WWDC 2011 as we’re pretty sure Apple are going to introduce a white model alongside the iPhone 5 announcement. Let us know your thoughts on this. | iPad 2 Jailbreak on iOS 4.3: Confirmed, No Download Release Date ETA Yet Posted: 13 Mar 2011 06:51 PM PDT Well, well well – we didn’t think it would be talking about this so soon, but we stand corrected. It has just been confirmed that a member of the iPhone Dev-Team has managed to successfully jailbreak the recently released iPad 2 device running iOS 4.3. The person responsible is Comex, and he has wasted to time in providing a picture as proof, showing his swanky new iPad 2 running on the jailbreak-only Cydia software, which you can see over at Engadget. At the moment, there is no word on a public download for this, but you can bet that Comex is working on getting a release fixed up asap. Interestingly, it has also been confirmed that a new exploit was required to make the jailbreak possible on Apple’s new hardware, again we’re sure we’ll be hearing full details on the exploit used throughout the week. What are your thoughts on the jailbreak? Are you shocked and surprised that this has happened so quickly? Are you patiently waiting to get Cydia up and running on your iPad 2 or are you going to stay away from jailbreaking your device? | Magicbox The Tower DAB / FM and iPod / iPhone Dock Review Posted: 13 Mar 2011 01:54 PM PDT Recently we were sent a new product manufactured by a company called Magicbox, “The Tower” is a DAB / FM radio and an iPhone / iPod dock, not only this but it also has a built-in alarm clock. This product is lightweight, portable and available in four different metallic colors (red, purple, blue and black), inside the retail packaging you get the tower, a basic user manual and a mains adapter. According to the packaging “The Tower” features MBX speaker technology, also the built-in DAB / FM radio allows for up to 20 presets and you can automatically or manually scan for stations, other features worth mentioning include its snooze button for the alarm (snooze time can be set to your preference), adjustable backlight for the LCD display and clock which features automatic time adjustment (GMT). If you plan on using the dock functionality you will be glad to hear that it supports iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, all iPod Touch variants, iPod (4th and 5th gen), iPod Nano (3rd, 4th and 5th gen), iPod Mini and iPod Classic, despite the original Nano not being officially supported it worked fine for me. In terms of build quality you can’t really question Magicbox’s product, the metallic finish is a nice touch and all of the buttons feel sturdy, one thing which I didn’t like was the long length of the antenna, however this is adjustable, if the signal is good in your area you do not need to fully extend it, however in my home I needed to have it at full-length. The device itself is very easy to use and after roughly two minutes I had ran an autoscan and was happily listening to my favorite radio station, when you dock your iPhone / iPod you simply press the mode button to listen to your playlists, there is also an auxiliary input (3.5mm jack) which is pretty self-explanatory. I am a nightmare for getting up early, therefore I was keen to test out the alarm clock functionality, the menu system was pretty easy to navigate and you can choose what you wake up to, the built-in buzzer can be set to a very high-volume which would probably be unpopular with your neighbours, alternatively you can also set alarms to play the radio or play music from your Apple device. As previously mentioned the display’s backlight is adjustable, personally I thought that the default setting was fine, however if you are in a brighter environment this feature would come in very handy, also if you are using “The Tower” as an alarm and do not like lights in the bedroom you can adjust it to appear much dimmer. Sound quality was pretty good, however as you would expect the depth of sound wasn’t breathtaking, I used the radio functionality in my kitchen and I was more than happy with the volume and clarity, for a party the device would be pretty suitable, however uncomparable to high-end speakers like my Teufel Concept B 200s, believe me there is no shame in that. The device being light is not great for when you press the buttons on the front, because the buttons are pretty stiff it means that the dock would topple over if you didn’t support the tower at the same time, luckily the volume and snooze buttons are placed on top, which means you can tiredly hit snooze without having to worry about it falling over. All in all we have to say that the Magicbox “The Tower” is a great DAB radio / alarm clock / iPod dock, there are some very slight imperfections, however everything which was important worked just fine. I mentioned the sound quality wasn’t the best, however I really think you will struggle to find a similar device at a similar price which seriously outperforms “The Tower”, you can buy the device for roughly £70 at a lot of UK retailers such as Comet.
