New Philips Camcorder Features Wi-Fi and 23x zoom – Price and Release to come

Philips has contributed to the video and audio market for many years now. Until now it had mainly been through headphones and speaker systems for a while, which we have previously brought to your attention but now it seems they are to release a piece of equipment that will allow you to create your own content.

The news we have today comes from an article at NewTechLover which is of a new Philips camcorder that features Wi-Fi and a 23x zoom. This camcorder is called the ESee HD camcorder as it will be complete with full 1080p HD resolution.

The Wi-Fi feature will allow for direct uploading to the internet so you can put your freshly recorded videos on Facebook of YouTube. It also features an audio zoom which controls the microphone focus, touchscreen viewfinder and all content can be stored on the SD card it comes with.

As it has been so long since Philips produced a device like this, there is no doubt those fanboys out there will be wanting to get their hands on the ESee HD. Unfortunately we have no details of release date or even a price yet.

More information can be read in the full article at the link above. What are your thoughts on the new Philips device? Will you be getting one? Let us know your thoughts.

Microsoft Zune Players Axed, Software is the Future?

Microsoft Zune Players Axed, Software is the Future?

According to a recent article posted on Bloomberg it looks like Microsoft will stop introducing new versions of their Zune portable media players, instead they will concentrate on the Zune software.

Apple’s iPod variants dominate the music-player market accounting for 77% of unit sales last year, Microsoft’s Zune players didn’t even reach the top 5, however the Zune software still has a strong future on your Xbox 360s, PCs and smartphones.

Recently a Microsoft representative failed to confirm that the Zune music and video players were being axed, however did release this statement: "We are thrilled by the consumer excitement for Zune across many new platforms, including Windows Phone 7 and Xbox 360. Our long-term strategy focuses on the strength of the entire Zune ecosystem across Microsoft platforms", as you can see there is no mention of the Zune HD etc.

It is thought that existing Zune models will continue to be on sale, currently the top-end model is the 64GB Zune HD, however 32GB and 16GB variants are also available.

To be honest with you high-end smartphones running Windows Phone 7 pretty much rule out any need to buy the Zune HD, let’s face it any half decent smartphone you buy these days features multimedia capabilities which are comparable to the Zune HD.

Do you own a Zune player? Do you think they are underrated portable media players?

Sony Xperia Play Games: The List You Want

We may have brought you a hands-on video and details of its UK price and release date, but we've never been able to provide you with a Sony Xperia Play games list. We still don't know what games will be available, but we can all have our little wish lists.

Thomas Newton over on the recombu.com website has done exactly that, and provided a list of PlayStation games that he would like to see released for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. The very first game on the list is the much-loved, Square Enix-developed RPG title, Final Fantasy VII.

Next on the list is Metal Gear Solid, followed by the addictive 3D puzzle game Kula World. The Kula World game is already available to purchase from the PlayStation Store for the PS3 and PSP, but Thomas thinks that it should be released for the Xperia Play as well.

The next two games mentioned are the horror survival classic Resident Evil, and Wipeout 2097. Tomb Raider also appears to have got a mention on the list, as did Tony Hawk's Skateboarding. Thomas says that the control setup on the Xperia Play would be ideal for the Tony Hawk's game.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the next game mentioned, followed by PaRappa the Rapper and finally, Street Fighter Alpha 3. What do you think of this list? What games would you like to see on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play?

After Japan Tsunami, Chip Prices Increase

As Japan starts the long road to recovery following last week's terrible events, the technology world starts to feel the effects as well. We told you recently that some of Japans biggest electronics companies have had to shut down production, and even video games have been delayed.

Miyoung Kim from Reuters is reporting that prices for key technology items have soared following the troubles out in Japan. The probability of prolonged supply issues have seen companies searching for alternative sources of tech components. According to research firm HIS iSuppli this could lead to big price rises.

Prices for NAND flash chips rose again today by three percent, this after rising twenty percent yesterday. DRAM memory chip prices have also risen by 7.2 percent since Monday. NAND memory chips have seen demand jump mainly due to the Apple iPad 2. Toshiba Corp who are responsible for around one-third of the world's NAND chips is not sure when its plant will reopen.

Texas Instruments has warned its two sites might not be running at full production before July, but it has been able to redirect sixty percent of output to other factories. Sony which have eight factories making a variety of products including Blu-ray discs do not know when they will be opening.

A company which makes the touch module for the iPad 2, Taiwan’s Wintek, has said they have over two weeks of supplies left, and a source from the company said they were looking for alternative suppliers.

The dreadful events of last week will continue to cause problems for the country, which will be keen to get the economy back up and running to start funding the massive rebuilding program the people of Japan are now facing.

2011 Best and Worst Paying Jobs: Search With Apps

2011 Best and Worst Paying Jobs: Search With Apps

If you are currently searching for the highest paid jobs and are also interesting in knowing what the worst paid jobs are, you’ll be interested to know that there are a few apps which can help with this very subject.

We all want a high paid job in life, but sometimes it isn’t easy to find just by searching via the conventional methods. With this in mind, why not try your hand at searching for some vacant positions with the help of your trusty iPhone or iPod Touch?

One app we’ve picked out is called ‘High Paying Jobs’, and it’s currently available to download now from the App store or iTunes for free. The app lets you browse through millions of job opportunities, and usefully, the app will divide jobs and categories based on the location you insert into the search bar. The only downside to this free app, is that it is US-only at the moment. You can view some preview screenshots over at App Shopper here.

If you’re looking for some of the worst jobs of 2011, you may be interested in this AT&T Jobs portal app we’ve found on iTunes. Ok, perhaps we’re being unfair a little bit to good ol’ AT&T, so we’ll cut them some slack. On a serious note, the worst job in 2011 at the moment is a Roustabout, according to CareerCast’s list over at the WSJ. That’s closely followed by an ironworker, a lumberjack and a taxi driver believe it or not.

That list of best and worst jobs in 2011 is very interesting though, so make sure you check it out. Do you know someone with a really good or bad job? We’d love to hear your suggestions below.

Ofcom on Mobile Phone Call Prices

Ofcom on Mobile Phone Call Prices

If you live in the UK and use a mobile phone, calling your friends and family is about to get cheaper. Ofcom has acted on Mobile phone call charges and imposed a reduction.

An article on guardian.co.uk is reporting that phone charges are set to fall by eighty percent over the next four years. The prices will start to fall from April 1st, the big three carriers O2, Vodafone, and the new Orange and T-Mobile tie up Everything Everywhere, currently charge4.18p a minute to connect calls from rival carriers.

But from next month this will fall to 2.66p per minute, and by April 2014 will be down to 0.69p. Ofcom expects landline operators to also pass on the cost savings, and for mobile carriers to offer customers more choice.

Another carrier 3 UK can currently charge up to 4.48p a minute, but will fall in line with the other carriers from next month. These changes are expected to help smaller carriers offer more competitive prices. Since 2007 contract termination rates have also fell by 35% thanks to caps imposed by Ofcom.

Ofcom said that mobile phone companies may lose money in call charges, but are seeing more customers using data services, such as using the internet via their mobile devices. Data traffic has more than doubled and now makes up the majority of traffic. Mobile companies have seen revenue from data climb 90% between 2007 and 2009.

With price cuts imposed on the mobile networks will we see the price of handsets going up, as companies try to make their money up elsewhere? They even might start offering less attractive contracts on the latest smartphones.

What do you think will operators make their money up in other ways?

World Largest Quakes and Tsunamis Alert Apps

If you have been worried by the recent events in Japan after the huge earthquake and tsunami rocked the country, you’ll be pleased to know that we’ve located an excellent App for the iPhone and other iOS devices which will allow you to keep up to date on future earthquakes and tsunamis.

We’re sad to hear reports that another aftershock and tsunami may still hit Japan in the next few days, and it’s quite upsetting to see the countless news reports on TV showing close-up footage of the disaster and continuing stories from witnesses who managed to survive the tsunami.

However, there are some apps which may make things a little easier for you at this time, and one of them is called ‘Earthquake Display’, available to download now from the App store or iTunes for $0.99.

It started off as an app solely for earthquake purposes, giving you information on the last 200 earthquakes to occur around the world, but it has recently been updated to offer the latest alerts on Tsunamis as well. This is particularly useful as it delivers information via Push Notfications, meaning that you’ll get a message on your iPhone instantly, if anything major happens.

If you think this app will be useful to you, head to the iTunes link here for more information. Alternatively, let us know if you are currently using a different iOS app for information on the events in Japan.

iPhone 5 release date unclear after white assurance

iPhone 5 release date unclear after white assurance

Apple doesn’t comment on rumors, but you could always count on their routine for yearly product launches, which some next-generations have been less than 12-months. The iPhone 5 release date has become unclear in recent weeks thanks to Apple stepping out of routine.

First we had the Verizon iPhone 4 launch that was a surprise, this device should have launched as a Verizon iPhone 5, and instead it will cause some people problems if they've only just bought the Verizon iPhone 4.

The recent tweet that quickly disappeared could be seen as confirmation for a white iPhone 4 in April, and one analyst also hinted at this last week, which said production for the white iPhone 4 should start in March.

Recent Apple rumors must always be taken with a pinch of salt, but some will be close to the truth although they do confuse what might happen with the iPhone 5.

We expect three situations to unfold, the first would be a white iPhone 4 to release for Verizon only within the next 2-months, which would also point to Verizon getting iPhone 5 in January 2012 (one year on). The AT&T white iPhone 5 would be in June/July after WWDC 2011.

The second situation would be a white iPhone 4 coming to AT&T and Verizon within the next 2 months, although this does seem a little pointless with the 5th-generation so close to release.

Our final prediction would be Apple completely surprising us with a white iPhone 5 coming to AT&T and Verizon early, maybe in May. This would not follow the WWDC routine, but you never know with Apple.

Would do you expect Apple to do with the iPhone 5 release date?

We have some news today of a Nestle recall in 2011, the company have announced they are making a voluntary recall of some of its meals due to possibility of foreign bodies being found in the frozen food.

The Nestle Lean Cuisine recall concerns its Simple Favorites Spaghetti with Meatballs, which may have pieces of red plastic inside. The meals have the production code of 0298595519P, and were produced in late October in 2010.

The products also have a best before date of November 2011 printed on the side or underneath the ingredient listing. No injuries have been reported by consumers, and only a few customers have reported finding the pieces of plastic.

This also happened back in 2008 with some Lean Cuisine meals having similar problems with foreign materials being found in meals. Samsung Sidekick 4G on T-Mobile: Official Specs and Release Date ETA

You may remember this phone leaking in various advertisements a few weeks ago, but today, T-Mobile has just made things official with their Sidekick 4G handset. It will be built by Samsung and we have a list of specs to give you as well as details on when it will be out.

T-Mobile’s press release confirms that the Sidekick 4G will be available sometime ‘this Spring’, and that Samsung will be building the ‘stylishly good looking’ handset (their words, not ours).

It’s called the 4G as it will run on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network and it will be available in two colors – either matte black or pearl magenta. Specs include a 3.5-inch tilt touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard, a 1 GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor and a 3 megapixel camera, yes we did say only 3. It also features a front camera though, which will make use of QIK video chat.

Obviously, the specs aren’t as premium as what you’d get on say the LG Optimus 2X, but previous Sidekick owners will know that this handset is still a pretty big deal. You can sign up for more information on the official website site, where there’s also more photos of the device. You can read the press release over at Engadget here if you’re interested.

What are your thoughts on this phone? Is there room for a new Sidekick device in 2011 or do you think the social-media based phone is outdated?

HTC Thunderbolt: Wirefly Reveal Release Date

HTC Thunderbolt: Wirefly Reveal Release Date

It looks like the HTC Thunderbolt release date mystery is finally coming to a close, as one retailer has gone on record to say that they’ll be shipping the highly anticipated HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon on a date this month which has already been touted by many as the official launch date.

That date is March 17th, and you’ll probably already know it as a date which has been associated with the HTC Thunderbolt in the past. Retailers Wirefly have just confirmed that they’ll be selling the device on this date, while they also dropped a small bombshell by informing users that the device won’t have support for Skype video calls, but voice calls should still be ok, as reported from Engadget.

The retailer is taking orders right now as we speak, and you can view their Thunderbolt listing online and pre-order here – they are offering the device for $669 without contract, and $199 on a new two year deal with Verizon, which sounds about right to us. You’ll need to input your zipcode so they can run a quick check to see if stock is available in your area.

It’s now looking likely that the Thunderbolt will be available this Thursday, but it’s rather strange that we haven’t heard word from Verizon on this yet, since they usually kick off their advertising bandwagon early.

Will you be picking up a Thunderbolt, finally?

Internet Explorer 9 (IE9): Problems after Download?

If you’re a fan of Internet Explorer, you probably won’t need us to tell you that Microsoft has just put the download for Internet Explorer 9 online on one of their websites within the last few hours. We want to hear of any problems you’ve had either installing the software, or afterwards whilst using it.

If you haven’t downloaded IE9 yet, you can do so over at Microsoft’s Beauty of the Web page here. It’s only available for PC users at the moment and you may be disappointed to hear that Windows XP is not supported, only Windows 7, Vista, and Windows Server 2008 for the time being.

Aside from a completely revamped User Interface, Internet Explorer 9 will benefit from much faster overall performance thanks to a brand new javascript engine called Chakra. You’ll also get a security-enabled download manager, address bar search and many more features.

While there may not be any noticable problems with IE9 now since the download has only been up for a few hours, it is inevitable that problems and bugs will filter out in the coming weeks, so if you notice anything serious with the software that you feel we should know about, leave us a comment below.

Our only problem with Internet Explorer 9 right now, is that Mac is not supported at the moment. We’re hoping that Microsoft is planning to change this though since it’s in their best interests to make it available on all operating systems.

White iPad 2 or Black iPad 2: Which Color Did you Choose?

White iPad 2 or Black iPad 2: Which Color Did you Choose?

As most of you will be well aware, the iPad 2 officially went on sale on March 11th, with a reported 1 million units already accounted for during the weekend of sales. If you queued up to buy one, or bought one online, we want to know which color you opted for.

Unlike the first generation iPad, Apple now offers the iPad 2 in a white model, since it’s usually perceived by consumers that white remains the most sought after color, after what happened with the White iPhone 4 release date delays.

Hopefully the delays are all behind Apple now, and customers will be able to freely choose a white model without any problems, both in-store and online. We’re guessing that most of you opted for the white iPad 2, since it’s a fresh new look for the device, and the iPad 1 didn’t offer such a color.

Are we right about this, or did you decide to stick with the classic black model? We’re not going to start a war and say that the white iPad 2 looks better, but we do think that the white model may end up being the favorite amongst consumers.

If you have bought an iPad 2, vote in our poll below and tell us which color you went for.

Nintendo 3DS Accessories: Nyko Power Pak+ Battery Charger

If you have already managed to get your hands on a Nintendo 3DS from Japan, then you’ll probably be aware that the overall battery life isn’t too great on the glasses-free 3D handheld. Luckily for you, accessory makers Nyko has come to your rescue.

They have designed a battery charger for the device, which they are calling the Power Pak+. The Nintendo 3DS currently offers around three hours of battery life, disappointing we know, but Nyko’s Power Pak+ apparently will double that, offering a much more solid 6 hours of gaming use.

Aside from the extra three hours it offers, the best thing about the Power Pak+ is the price, as Nyko will be selling it for a very reasonable $20, as reported from Joystiq. The only downside to picking one of these up, is the considerable amount of bulk you’ll add to the system as it attaches to the back.

If you want to make full use of the Power Pak+, Nyko also have another option for you, a accompanying charge cradle for the pack which can replace the current 3DS charging station. Nyko will be selling this for $30 which again, isn’t a bad deal.

What are your thoughts on these products? If you’re constantly getting frustrated about the minimal battery life on the 3DS, it’s worth spending $20 to try one of these out – you probably won’t regret it. Both are available to buy now.

Apple iPad 2: Rear Camera Quality Disappointing?

Apple iPad 2: Rear Camera Quality Disappointing?

For those of you who are lucky enough to have already picked up a new iPad 2 tablet from Apple, we want to know what your general impressions of the device are, with specific reference to the rear camera quality. We’ve seen a video online which suggests that the video camera quality isn’t as good as the iPhone 4 camera.

That video has been provided by RedmondPie, and it shows a sample video taken with the rear iPad 2 camera, take a look now below so you can get an idea of the average quality for yourself.

Obviously, the quality isn’t amazing, and it does seem like the camera quality isn’t as good as the camera featured on the iPhone 4 which takes decent photos and excellent video recordings. It has been well documented that Apple has failed to give exact details on the rear camera specs, and also the exact quality of the front-facing camera.

Dare we say it, but are Apple afraid that the iPad 2 camera will come in for criticism if they announce the exact specs? RedmondPie believe that the iPad 2 rear camera quality is similar to that seen on the iPod Touch, which is obviously less impressive. If this turns out to be true, it’s a bit disappointing that the iPad 2 won’t be able to take videos with at least the same quality seen on the iPhone 4.

Have you already taken some photos and videos on the iPad 2? Get in touch with us and have your say on this matter.
