24-Hours Before HTC Thunderbolt Release Date, NTK Posted: 16 Mar 2011 04:06 AM PDT With the journey to the HTC Thunderbolt release date being an eventful one, we thought it was about time that a recap of that journey was in order. In around 24-hours the big day will come, and some people will be doing all they can to get their hands on the new 4G phone. The first time we ever mentioned the HTC Thunderbolt was on December 28, 2010, here we spoke about the smartphone’s CES 2011 reveal and asked you whether you wanted it to be called the HTC Thunderbolt or the HTC Incredible HD, our reader’s preferred the Thunderbolt name. Over the next week or so more HTC Thunderbolt details were revealed, we got to see the first-ever photo of the Thunderbolt, a Verizon advert confirming it was coming to “Big Red” and we also heard how it would feature an 8 megapixel camera and a front-facing camera for video chat. Since then we have published dozens of posts talking about release dates, accessories, benchmark scores and battery life, battery life was one of the biggest things we wrote about as this was what was rumored to be delaying its release, however yesterday we finally officially confirmed the HTC Thunderbolt release date, to recap the whole HTC Thunderbolt journey check out this link. Now that the HTC Thunderbolt is just one day away we thought we would provide you with some important and useful links, firstly if you are still not convinced by the HTC Thunderbolt check out the official overview and specifications, secondly once convinced buy your device at Best Buy, thirdly follow Verizon on Twitter or like their Facebook page for all of the latest news, finally check out the Thunderbolt page on HTC Forums which will undoubtedly be a very useful resource once you start using your HTC Thunderbolt. Do you think the HTC Thunderbolt will live up the hype? For more coverage:
SOCOM 4: Beta Gameplay Surprises with Solid Graphics Posted: 16 Mar 2011 03:51 AM PDT We have a treat for SOCOM fans now, as we’ve found a lengthy gameplay video showing footage of the SOCOM 4 multiplayer closed beta which is ongoing exclusively on the PS3. If you previously weren’t interested in the game, this video we have will probably change your mind. The game isn’t due out until April 19th in the US, April 22nd in the UK, but there is a beta ongoing now that will run until April 13th. If you’re in the US, you can get into the beta with special copies of Killzone 3 or if you’re a PlayStation Plus user, but in the UK, only a PSN+ subscription will get you in. With that said and done, let us tell you how impressed we are with the graphics featured in the game. We admit, we weren’t too impressed when Sony was showing off the game with PlayStation Move all those months ago, but we’re pleased to say that SOCOM 4 may be a surprise package this year for PS3 owners. The video is over one hour in length, but you’ll want to skip to around 38 minutes for when the gameplay starts. A big thanks goes to Kueef for providing this video for us, hopefully it won’t get taken down soon so you can all enjoy it. Are you impressed with the graphics for SOCOM 4 seen in the beta? Let us know if this has changed your mind on whether to pick up the game or not. For more coverage:
iPhone 5 Release, Question Considerations Posted: 16 Mar 2011 03:47 AM PDT The iPhone 5 appears to be quite a popular topic of conversation in the tech world at the moment, with many questions being asked about the much-anticipated handset. These of course include questions regarding the iPhone 5's release, features and overall design. Dan Frommer from the businessinsider.com website has recently compiled a list of the top ten questions that are currently being asked about Apple's next iPhone. The first question is related to iOS 5, and what exactly the company has planned for the next version. When asking several iOS developers what they wanted from iOS 5, they included things such as more background processing features and a better notifications and alerts system. Another question being asked is whether or not we are going to see a whole new design for the iPhone 5. If previous reports were anything to go by, then the answer to that question would be yes. As Chris Maugham noted in one of our previous articles, there have been rumors suggesting that the iPhone 5 would feature an aluminum chassis, with a resin Apple logo on the rear that houses the antenna. Another interesting question is whether or not the iPhone 5 would feature Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. That unfortunately doesn't appear to be one of the added features on the iPhone 5, as recent reports claimed that it would be left out this year. Other questions included in the list are whether the iPhone 5 would be smaller or bigger than the iPhone 4 and will it have an innovative case like the recently revealed Smart Cover for the Apple iPad 2. What are you hoping for in the next Apple iPhone? For more coverage:
Where did Microsoft’s Zune go wrong? Posted: 16 Mar 2011 02:42 AM PDT If you currently own a Microsoft Zune or Zune HD player, you’re likely to be pretty disappointed over reports on the internet suggesting that Microsoft has decided to kill off future new Zune hardware in favor of focusing on the Zune software side of things. Microsoft are yet to officially confirm the news, but after Bloomberg wrote their piece on it, pretty much every tech website and blog has has their say on it already. There’s obviously a lot of speculation going around that Apple’s iPod is the sole reason that the Zune Player has met it’s untimely death, while we’ve also read some user feedback stating that Zune isn’t dead – it’s just been transformed into Windows Phone 7. One thing we can all agree on though, is that sales and popularity of the device aren’t as high as Microsoft had hoped, and if thats the case, then why continue to waste money on hardware that is going to end up costing more money than making a profit. According to the LATimes, the Zune HD player wasn’t even ranked in the top five portable music and video players, with the iPod enjoying 77% of all sales in 2010. If the news turns out to be true and the Zune HD does appear to be the last Zune player that Microsoft bring out, what are your thoughts on this? Where do you think Zune went wrong? Is it an evident message that the iPod simply can’t be beaten, or do you think there are other areas in which Microsoft failed. Give us your thoughts on this. For more coverage:

MotorStorm: Apocalypse – UK Release Date Now Delayed Posted: 16 Mar 2011 02:29 AM PDT A few days ago we brought you news that the MotorStorm: Apocalypse game's release date had been delayed, due to the ongoing events in Japan following the recent earthquake. At the time we wrote the article (here), it only appeared to be the Japanese date affected. However, according to a recent article by Andy Robinson at computerandvideogames.com, Sony has since announced that the UK release date has also been delayed. The racing game was due to be released in the UK on March 17th, but has now been changed to "TBA." The MotorStorm: Apocalypse game places gamers in a post-apocalyptic city that has been rocked by natural disasters. Sony Computer Entertainment said that they are very conscious of the parallels between the recent events in Japan and the underlying theme of MotorStorm: Apocalypse. Sony's statement said that although they shipped the game into the channel last week, they have decided to postpone the UK launch and will continue to monitor the situation. They also went on to say that their thoughts are with all the people that have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami. MotoroStorm: Apocalypse isn't the only game that has been delayed either. The Yakua: Of the End game has also been postponed, as has the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 DLC. Meanwhile, publisher Irem has decided to cancel the Disaster Report 4 game altogether. Do you hope that the MotorStorm: Apocalypse game is given another release date soon? For more coverage:
iPhone 5 vs. HTC Thunderbolt: Is LTE The Dealbreaker? Posted: 16 Mar 2011 01:59 AM PDT It is certainly a good time if you’re a Verizon subscriber or you’re planning to move to Big Red at some point this year. As most of you will be aware, the HTC Thunderbolt finally gets it’s release tomorrow, March 17, and it’s a device which is carrying quite a lot on it’s shoulders. If you have been keeping up to date with Verizon’s 4G LTE network rollouts, you’ll know that the HTC Thunderbolt is the first device which can offer speeds of up to 5-12Mbps downstream, and 2-5Mbps upstream – but is LTE the sole reason you are buying this device? In terms of hardware specs, the HTC Thunderbolt isn’t actually that great at all, when you see some of the other phones that have been announced recently. Firstly, it doesn’t have a dual-core processor, just a 1Ghz Qualcomm MSM8655 chip with 768MB of RAM. Another big disappointment about the phone is that it only ships with Android 2.2 Froyo, not the current 2.3 Gingerbread software which should really be on all new Android smartphones now. With this in mind, we want to know if LTE is the only reason you are buying the HTC Thunderbolt. Don’t forget that the iPhone 5, if it’s announced this Summer is highly unlikely to have 4G LTE support as well, which could turn potential iPhone 5 buyers to the Thunderbolt – purely because of LTE. The iPhone 5 will probably have that same dual-core A5 processor that’s featured on the iPad 2, but how good will the device actually turn out in 2011, if it can only run on Verizon’s 3G network? Perhaps something worth thinking about if you’re planning on picking up either handset. Give us your thoughts on this one. For more coverage:
Is International Launch Date of iPad 2 in Doubt? Posted: 16 Mar 2011 01:58 AM PDT Many people are still having problems getting hold of an iPad 2; new deliveries of the device arrived at some Apple Stores and sold out almost immediately. With the international launch date less than two weeks away will Apple have enough stock? Neil Hughes from AppleInsider is reporting that Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities, had checked with stores in New York and San Francisco and discovered only a few had received new deliveries. Of these stores all had sold out within a few hours, and not all Apple stores saw new shipments and the ones which did saw smaller unit numbers than they received for last Friday's launch. Some stores even opened early on Tuesday to receive a new supply of iPad 2s, but none actually arrived. People were still going to stores and lining up in the hope to purchase the new iPad but left disappointed after no fresh stock turned up, with only one in three stores received stock in San Francisco. With the limited stock levels in the US White wonders if Apple will have enough stock for the International launch on March 25. This happened last year with the original iPad which saw its release date pushed back in other countries outside the US. Given the fact that Apple had to delay launching in other places last year, they must have a different plan for the iPad 2. Hopefully they have allocated a certain amount of units for each country on launch date. For more coverage:
HTC Thunderbolt Accessories: 2750 mAh Battery, Dock, Charger Prices Posted: 16 Mar 2011 01:20 AM PDT Earlier on we just gave you a link to download the official user manual for the HTC Thunderbolt handset, but now we have juicy information on some of the official accessories that will be available for the device on or after launch, i.e March 17th. This is not just a single accessory that we’re talking about either, as Phandroid has managed to get hold of images which reveal a multimedia dock, an extended battery and also a battery door as well for wireless charging. While the pictures up at Phandroid are useful, the real information here is the included prices with the accessories as well. The 2750 mAh extended battery will be priced at $50 – the battery shipped with the Thunderbolt is only a 1400 mAh just to let you know so it should offer you a good few hours more of voice and multimedia usage. As for the multimedia dock, it will be available for $59.99 and it will switch your device to landscape mode whilst charging it at the same time. There’s also an extra port on there which could be a 3.5mm jack or a HDMI port – maybe even both. The battery door will be priced at $39.99 and it will give you the ability to charge a battery wirelessly, which will probably end up being pretty useful we imagine. Check out the images over at Phandroid. We’ll be bringing you further details on these accessories as we get them. Which one appeals to you the most? The multimedia dock is obviously more expensive, but we say the 2750 mAh battery is the most appealing, although you may not be too happy about paying $50 for one. For more coverage:
Motorola Milestone: Android 2.2 Froyo Update Live, But Is it Too Late? Posted: 15 Mar 2011 11:56 PM PDT This is definitely a case of better late than never. Motorola Milestone owners in Europe have cause for celebration now, as we can confirm that Motorola has just gone live with the official Android 2.2 Froyo update for handsets. To get the update in Europe, you’ll need to connect your Milestone to a computer and head to Motorola’s support page here, as reported from Phandroid. This means that the update won’t be happening OTA so don’t wait around for a notification because you won’t get one. Key features of the update include Adobe 10.1 Flash Player, better web browser performance, 3g mobile hotspot support, automatic app updates, improved WiFi connectivity and much more. You can check out the full release notes in this PDF file here we’ve picked out for you. How many of you are still proud owners of the Milestone, also known as the Motorola Droid for US? Don’t forget that the US has had the Froyo update for almost a year now, so there definitely is a bit of favoritism going on we think. Still though, 2.2 is obviously better than 2.1, but don’t get your hopes up about 2.3 Gingerbread appearing anytime soon. Let us know once you’ve downloaded it. For more coverage:
Star Wars The Old Republic: New Gameplay and Release Date Update Posted: 15 Mar 2011 11:12 PM PDT We have some good news for those of you who are patiently waiting for Star Wars: The Old Republic to release on PC, as some new gameplay videos for the title has emerged, taken from the recent PAX East event. The gameplay is over 5 minutes long, and gives you a look at how the game is shaping up so far but it is due to release later on this year. We’ve all seen those stunning CGI videos of the game, but this time we see some actual gameplay footage – and the graphics are looking pretty slick we have to admit. The video quality isn’t perfect, but this will be the first gameplay footage you’ve seen of the game in a while, so enjoy it while it is still online since it wasn’t officially provided by Bioware, just in case it gets removed in a few hours. As for a release, we’ve heard via Play.tm that the game won’t be out until July at the earliest, and could even be out during the latter months of 2011, hopefully that won’t be the case though. It seems like this game has been in development for an eternity, but judging by the footage below – it’s well worth waiting for. Are you looking forward to The Old Republic? For more coverage:
HP TouchPad: CEO Reveals Release Date ETA Posted: 15 Mar 2011 10:33 PM PDT The last time we spoke about the upcoming HP Touchpad, we told you that the device could be released in June, priced at $699. We have some good news for you now, as some recent comments from HP CEO Leo Apotheker have confirmed that the device will indeed be out in June. Unfortunately, we still don’t know what exact date the HP Touchpad will be out, but at least you can now prepare for a definite release sometime in June, without needing to worry about the month changing. Don’t forget we still don’t know what date the BlackBerry Playbook will be out, as the two devices are likely to go head to head this Summer, along with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 which is on the way soon too. It’s definitely a difficult decision between the three – which one are you favoring at the moment? Interestingly, the HP CEO also revealed that webOS will be demoed on a PC running Windows towards the end of the year. You can read more details about this over at PreCentral if you’re interested. If you haven’t seen too much of the HP Touchpad, check out the useful video hands-on we’ve included below courtesy of TechBuffalo. For more coverage:
Motorola Droid 3, Droid X 2 and Motorola Targa Phones Revealed? Posted: 15 Mar 2011 08:39 PM PDT We have some exciting news for Motorola Droid fans now, as some leaked pictures have appeared online, revealing that Motorola has plans to release a further three handsets at some point this year. Two of them are thought to be Droid branded, and the other one a separate 4G LTE device. The pictures have appeared over at HowardForums, and it confirms that all handsets are made by Motorola and unsurprisingly, all three will run on Android OS. The first is meant to be the ‘Motorola Droid 3‘ and a picture of it can be seen below. Unfortunately, no other details are mentioned, other than the fact that it has a QWERTY keyboard, although we can’t see this in the picture. A second picture showing the Droid X 2 has also been revealed, but this handset looks almost identical to the Droid 3, so we won’t bother uploading it here. Finally, the most appealing picture comes from a handset known as the ‘Targa’ which information over at Howard Forums state is a 4G LTE device for Verizon. It looks like a lot like the LG Optimus 2X in our opinion, take a look at it below to see for yourself. What are your thoughts on these leaked handsets? Until we see more information on them, don’t take this as an official confirmation that they’re coming just yet, but it does look promising we have to say. Hopefully we’ll get some spec details on the handsets so we can pick out which one is worth looking forward to the most. For more coverage:
| Verizon Release HTC Thunderbolt Manual Posted: 15 Mar 2011 07:22 PM PDT Following on from the official announcement by Verizon yesterday about the HTC Thunderbolt finally landing on March 17th, we now have an extra treat for you. The official user manual for the device has been uploaded online, giving you a full preview of what to expect from the phone. Just to remind you, the Thunderbolt will officially be Verizon’s first 4G LTE handset to release, allowing users to enjoy much faster data speeds than they’d usually get on their standard CDMA 3G network. As for the manual, you can view and download it over at Android Central here, it has been provided by forum member Cory Streater. It’s 339 pages long and there’s also color diagrams of the Thunderbolt on certain sections of the manual like navigating through the User Interface. The manual also reserves a few pages for guidance on how to set up your Thunderbolt with Facebook and Twitter features. The Facebook app will be built into HTC Sense, while you can use an app called ‘Peep’ to get your daily Twitter fix. If you are planning to get a Thunderbolt on Thursday or over the weekend, it’s pretty much essential that you take a look at this user guide to learn more information about the handset before you buy it. | Posted: 15 Mar 2011 02:51 PM PDT As we reported to you earlier the final version for IE9 is now available for users to download. For me having a good browser is important as it is being used constantly. Up until recently I have been using Firefox, but have been having issues with it keep freezing and crashing. This was after getting rid of numerous add-ons. Since then I have been using Google Chrome which is much faster and stable, but today I downloaded IE9. On first impressions the screen is less cluttered and has a cleaner feel to it. Speed wise it is much quicker than IE8, and have not experienced any problems with freezing so far. It is slightly slower than Google Chrome, but is faster than Firefox. At first I didn't notice the favorites and tools button in the top right hand side of the screen, but this adds to the cleaner look of the browser. Upon downloading I have found one problem, as I was met with an error message for my wireless Canon printer. At the moment there were no updates available for the drivers for the printer, but it is not an old model. We had reported earlier this year that toolbars and other add-ons caused has caused a lot of problems in Internet Explorer, now IE9 keeps a watch on your add-ons and will then warn you if one is unnecessarily slowing down the browser. The URL bar at the top of the screen is less than half the size of what is was before, which is a nice feature. It is also on the same line as the tab bars, instead of being above. I still prefer the look and feel of Google Chrome, but IE9 is a vast improvement over the old IE browser. Conclusion You can read a more in-depth review by clicking here. For more coverage: |
Smartphone Enters Inflation Basket Posted: 15 Mar 2011 12:56 PM PDT When the Office for National Statistics studies the UK’s economy they use a number of products and services to calculate inflation, we are now hearing that smartphones and apps have been added to the “basket of goods”. Smartphones are not the only new addition to the basket, dating agency fees are also in along with products such as an oven-ready joint, sparkling wine, dried fruit, MDF, hair conditioner and much more. Things leaving the basket of goods include mobile phone downloads, vending machine cigarettes and spectacle frames without lens, you can see a full list of what’s in and what’s out of the nation’s shopping basket here. The fact that smartphones and apps are being added to the basket shows just how important they have become in modern life, over the last year or so we have seen Android smartphones take off in the mid-end market with access to the Android market, prior to this Apple’s high-end iPhones with access to the App Store made purchasing apps an easy process, which has now become part of daily life. We can’t see apps or smartphone being taken out of the basket of goods for a few years now, can you? For more coverage:
