Submerged Review

By Chantelle Joy Duxbury on April 15th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: WOBBLY FUN
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Submerged should almost be considered a game, it’s so fun. Take wacky, distorted photos that look as if your camera was deep underwater.

Developer: Quantom Cogs
Price: $1.99 (currently $0.99)
Version: 1.0

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.33 out of 5 stars

While I usually like to review photographic effects apps, most of the time they’re fairly serious or artistic. However, this time I’d like to share something a bit more fun, and wacky. So lets take off our Serious Photographers Hat, and put on our Silly Camera Fun Hat, and enjoy Submerged.

What Submerged is going to offer is a sort of underwater view of the world. The really neat thing about this app is that it integrates the Gyrometer to actually effect the view through the camera, in real time to give you a distorted, wavy, wonky view of the world. You can also affect the effect by poking, pinching and prodding the view. It lets you shape your effect like your camera were made of out of jelly!

What sets this app apart from other distortion photo apps is that it gives you the ability to lock in a certain view, and distort everything to that specific shape. Or, you can also distort photos that you’ve already taken on your device, simply load them into the app, either touch the photo or wave your device around to make it crazy, fun-house mirror style distorted.

While there’s not much else to the app itself, you can save, email, or post your photos to Facebook right from within the app. The only drawback I found was that sometimes it was difficult to both move the device around and snap the photo at the same time. Or if you’re using your fingers to alter the picture, being able to snap the photo at the exact time that you want. All in all, I think this app will appeal to kids and adults alike. While the app description states that it’ll be regularly $1.99, I hope that this is not the case because the $0.99 price range is exactly where this app should be, and that amount is definitely worth the fun it offers.

Does a television quiz show like Jeopardy seem far too cordial these days?  In a age where a computer can demolish the greatest minds to ever play the game in a heartbeat, it seems like it would be about time to get a fresh new take on the trivia genre.  Granted, You Don’t Know Jack was originally birthed back in the mid 1990′s, but that still makes it about a hundred years younger than Jeopardy’s geriatric host, Alex Trebek.  The fact that this traditionally PC centric brand has laid dormant for eight years is enough to make the game feel like a rebirth of the genre regardless, but is this enough to drag players away from their televised mainstays?

The core idea behind You Don’t Know Jack is to take everything that a player believes they know about quiz games, and then turn them on their ear.  An integral part of this experience is the game’s announcer, Cookie Masterson, who is actually a completely fictional character voiced by Tom Gottlieb.  Is it really necessary for a voice actor to use a pseudonym in a video game?  Under normal circumstances this would be an immediate “hell no.”  That said,  Cookie can be on mean son of a gun when a question is answered incorrectly, so one could really never be too safe.

Consisting of multiple choice, this or that, and pairing puzzles, each episode of the game is made up of ten questions and a final bonus round. Players have the option to select from twenty different episodes that are included in the initial base game, or they can choose to wait for more episodes to come via DLC at some point in the future.  It has yet to be determined as to whether this additional content will be free or micro-transaction based, but you have to imagine that Jellyvision plans on being handsomely reimbursed for this additional development time.

If you were to choose to focus on the pure quiz mechanics of You Don’t Know Jack, the game proves itself to be completely competent.  However, most of the fun comes from being verbally abused by the announcer for selecting an incorrect answer.  You will be hard pressed to complete a round without some form of at least a smirk sneaking across your face.

Simply put, You Don’t Know Jack is the kind of experience that not only stretches the mind with challenge, but inversely massages it with humor to ease the blow of defeat.  Buy it for that know-it-all in your life, because sometimes it is just too much fun to see a person put in their place.  Rest assured that it will be fun for all parties involved.

Tea Review

One for the tea connoisseur.

I suppose it’s only appropriate that as one of the resident Brits on the 148apps team that I take a look at Tea. After all, it’s the British way to take tea under our wing and decide it’s our drink when technically it’s a Chinese creation. Cultural history aside, if you’re a tea fan then Tea could be right up your street.

Doing what apps like Pocket Wine have done for alcohol, Tea set outs to offer both a comprehensive Tea timer facility and a way of collating notes on your collection.

Using the app is easy enough. A sample tea demonstrates just how to set it up. You simply add things like the name and type of tea involved then Tea provides you with some standard settings that it thinks are appropriate for the type involved (such as if it’s green tea or a herbal infusion, amongst many others). A timer appears that you can set underway so that the app tells you the exact optimal time to finish brewing the tea. There’s also a temperature suggestion added as not all teas need to be done with boiling water, some prefer cooler water than that to bring out the flavor.

Once you’ve finished drinking your tea, you can then add notes on how it worked out – whether you need to do something differently such as brew it for a longer time or use hotter water. You can always add what you thought of the tea and whether you liked it which has to be the most important factor! Being able to add your own notes means you’ll always keep on top of your selection, and you can easily share that information with your friends via Twitter and Facebook support. In which case, it’s darn useful. An inventory tracker also ensures that you know exactly how much tea you should have left after purchasing a new bag. If you can’t decide what to drink, you can even let the app decide for you by giving your iOS device a quick shake. A neat little touch. My only request as a bit of a tea novice, is that I wish it had a brief glossary or encyclopaedic reference tool built in. It would have been a great idea to help educate those trying to understand all the different tea types of the world.

Of course by its very nature, Tea is going to be a niche choice. If you don’t like tea, or you’re not a hot drink fan, you probably shouldn’t have even started reading this. For the connoisseur though, this is ideal.

Big Cup Cricket Review

Big Cup Cricket Review

By Jennifer Allen on April 15th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: FUN FUN FUN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Big Cup Cricket offers immensely enjoyable arcade sports fun

Developer: Eidos Interactive
Price: $1.99

Overall Rating: 4.13 out of 5 stars

Distilling a sport as potentially complex as Cricket is a tricky task. Big Cup Cricket does away with excessive complications, instead focusing on what makes the sport so much fun. It’s the sort of arcade sports game that will be as much fun for fans as it is for newbies to the Cricketing world.

I’ll assume, and hopefully not be too patronising in such an assumption, that cricket is a mystery to many readers here. Think of it as like baseball as it kind of is. There are a few slight rule differences (I’ll admit to only knowing the basics) but mostly it’s quite similar. Two sides take it in turns to bat and bowl/pitch. Hit the ball out of the stadium and you get more runs. What do runs make? Victory! That’s about all you need to know with Big Cup Cricket – score more runs than the other guy.

You see that’s just how simple Big Cup Cricket is to get into. It takes a little while to master but it’s immediately accessible. Nearly everything is controlled through a matter of sweeping movements across the touch screen. A series of tutorials teaches you the finer nuances. When batting for instance, different strokes can make all the difference depending on how the ball is bowled at you. When bowling, you can throw curve balls which take a little practice but work very well. Fielding is not quite as intricate but it does require some accurate taps on the screen if you want to jump for the ball in time.

In each case, the tutorials explain it so well that you instantly feel capable of succeeding. This is perhaps the only downside to Big Cup Cricket. It’s not as challenging as it could be, even on the highest difficulty Cup game. There’s a Showdown option where you compete against a random team, it’s typically quite easy to win at. The Cup options are a bit more of a challenge but nothing that a little bit of perseverence won’t fix. It’s perhaps the multiplayer that offers the most competition but I struggled to find anyone to play against. A shame as it looks very well implemented thanks to Game Center.

I truly enjoyed Big Cup Cricket. Its control system is spot on, consistently accurate and makes the game a joy to play. The Cups, although a little easy to complete, are still very satisfying to play through. You’ll find yourself regularly returning to it, whether it be for a quick inning or a whole match. It’s quite clearly the best cricket game on the App Store so far.

SeamlessWeb Finally Lets You Order Food Straight From Your Phone

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Technology is miraculously advancing on a daily basis; food ordering has advanced at a far, far slower pace. We have these advanced smartphones, yet we still have to call up restaurants and give them our order over the phone when we want to order food, and of course, this leads to incorrect orders thanks to human error. This is downright barbaric! Surely, there must be a better way! SeamlessWeb says, yes, there is! Their app lets users order food for both pickup and delivery from over 6500 restaurants in 27 cities. You can find the closest restaurants to you, choose restaurants based on ratings, cuisine, estimated delivery time, and pay with your credit card from within the app. You can save your credit card, ordering addresses, and re-order your favorite meals within the app. The app has been updated recently to 1.5.22, adding support for the Retina Display and multitasking. If you’re one of those Android-owning heathens, you can get the app for your phone as well. The app is free across all platforms, and is available now, to solve what is truly one of the greatest first world problems.

Due Review

Due Review

By Jennifer Allen on April 15th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: TIMEKEEPERS FAVOURITE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Due is a reminder app that aims to do everything you could want, while maintaining its simplistic look.

Developer: Phocus
Price: $4.99
Version Reviewed: 1.4
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

iPhone Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.83 out of 5 stars

Sometimes simplicity is the key to a good and invaluable app. Due taps into that. It’s perhaps a little expensive for what it offers but then again, what price can you put on being organised?

The layout of Due is certainly simple. Upon opening, you’re presented with a Reminders section, Timers and a Logbook. The Reminders section allows you to set up reminders, rather predictably. There’s some depth here though. Besides a handy snooze button, you can set each reminder to repeat either on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis. Simplicity appears once more too with the option to extend the time or skip to tomorrow simply by tapping the relevant choice.

Then there’s the Timers panel which comes with some predefined examples such as ‘Coffee steeping’, ‘Power nap’ and ‘Pick up laundry’. These also benefit from a fancy switch to flick things off and on rather than just a regular button. You can add your own of course for all manners of things. I found it particularly useful when waiting for food to finish cooking in the oven so I didn’t have to rely on hearing the cooker’s timer on the other side of the house. You can either let it remind you a la an SMS message or Push notification or you can set it to make an noise as is customary for an alarm. The Logbook function is there to remind you of any alarms that have been used in the past which can be handy for reference.

It’s the amount of settings that makes Due stand out from the crowd. There are numerous different sound effects that you can use for Reminders as well as the primary and secondary Timers. As well as that there’s a selection of quick access timings that allow you to quickly set when you’re awake or when lunch time is. Then when returning to the Reminders section, you can add them even faster than usual. That’s the other big plus point with Due, it is extremely quick throughout – presumably due to doing away with anything like fancy graphics or gimmicky menus. Everything that’s here is useful.

My only reservation with Due is its pricing but it is a pretty comprehensive package none the less. A lot of it is down to the little things like the speed, easy interface and the ability to backup your information. The kind of things you might not neccessarily think of until you see something implement it all well. The mileage depends on how much you need to be organised of course but there’s always a lot in life that needs to be remembered from going out for your daily run to waiting for your dinner to cook. If you thrive upon organising everything down to the right second, this will be vital.
