Taptu Joins iPad with a Personalized Social News Flavor

    Posted: 14 Apr 2011 06:46 PM PDT

If you’re a fan of RSS newsreaders, you will probably like the idea of using an application that gives you more control over news streams, or ways to filter out uninteresting stories.

After testing the social news segment with its iPhone app, Taptu has launched a dedicated iPad version. The new iPad app not only gives you more control of news feeds, but it also features pre-selected content and gives you the ability to merge feeds into a single stream.

Taptu is a social news feed reader that organizes all the feeds you like into a single application. The application allows you to add your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and content from your favorite web sites and blogs (via RSS feeds or Twitter), and converts them into beautiful visual streams.

The application has been designed to give you control of the stories you’d like to see. Taptu feeds you with curated streams that contain news stories from several sources. You basically select the streams you want.

A feature that you might find quite useful, is the ability to mix streams. You can drag feeds on top of each other to create a single stream that is built with your own interests. You can also share your curated streams with your friends via Twitter, Facebook and e-mail.

Taptu also allows you to change some settings associated with your personal streams. You can change streams colors, and the height of each stream to organize all the content in a friendly way. The application also features a recommendation engine that pushes out articles based on your past reading history.

Taptu is a free application. You can download now from the App Store. It is available for the iPhone, iPod touch, and the iPad running iOS 4.0 or later.

Editor’s Note: The developer is planning to add additional features in the near future. Some of the new features include user accounts, as well as an HTML5 application that will provide a consistent experience across iOS devices. The application crashed a couple of times while I was using it, however it has been quite stable after that.

Hard Candy Announces White Collection for iPad 2

    Posted: 14 Apr 2011 05:27 PM PDT

How about some candy?  In celebration of Apple’s new white iPad 2, Hard Candy announced a White Collection of accessories which will hit the market soon.

This new lineup will provide iPad 2 owners with a sleek and fashionable way to accessorize and protect their favorite new gadget.  "The new White Collection exemplifies our efforts in offering today’s Apple enthusiast the finest experience through advanced technology and thoughtful design," said Tim Hickman, founder and CEO, Hard Candy Cases.  "Now consumers have access to accessories worthy of their new iPad 2!”

The White Candy Convertible, White Street Skin, White Bubble Sleeve and Stylus White Pen are set to begin shipping in May.  Hopefully in time for Mother’s Day.  Hint, hint!

We hope to get some review units soon and will share our likes and dislikes when we do.  In the mean time, checkout the information and pictures below.

White Candy Convertible ($44.95) - A flip folio is a nice choice for everyone from business executives to students.  The Candy Convertible faux nubuck flip folio case includes practicality and style in one.  Designed specifically for the iPad 2, this case offers a secure fit and protection.  The flip cover folds over and tucks into the back of the case giving users two viewing angles perfect for typing and movie watching.

White Street Skin ($39.95) - This rugged combination of shock-absorbing TPU rubber at the corners and edges and a case material that won't stretch provides the ultimate in iPad 2 protection. It allows full access to all buttons and ports, plus it includes an integrated magnetic screen enclosure.

White Bubble Sleeve ($49.95) - If you like the idea of a sleeve, Hard Candy's signature bubble design is a unique option for your iPad 2.  Shock absorbing rubber bumpers, a molded exterior and rigid EVA foam provide better protection than the average neoprene sleeve.  Its zippered opening also allows easy access to your device when you need it.

Stylus White Pen ($34.95) – To complement its White Collection of cases, Hard Candy offers users a stylus which works not only with your iPad 2, but your iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch and good old fashioned paper too.  Remove the cap on one side to reveal a stylus to use with your touch screen devices, then flip it over to the other end and you’ll find a regular ink pen with refillable reservoir.  A convenient and stylish way for business professionals to go from using their iPad one minute to signing important business documents the next!

Mizu Silicone iPad 2 Case – Accessory Review

    Posted: 14 Apr 2011 09:15 AM PDT

Finally!  Fed Ex delivered my long awaited iPad 2 yesterday afternoon and I wasted no time in trying out the first of many iPad 2 specific cases.  The Mizu Shell from UK based Proporta is a sleek case that fits like a glove.

The hard silicone construction protects your device from the bumps and scratches of every day use.  Its malleable material makes it easy to put on when you need it and take off if you don’t.  Just slip the the bottom two corners of your iPad 2 into the case and stretch the remaining sides around your device for a snug fit.

Cutouts provide easy access to ports, buttons, speakers, cameras and the SIM card tray (3G version only), allowing you to use your headphones, Skype, take pictures and more.

I received a red sample Mizu Shell and really liked the color and quality.  It was easy to use and added minimal weight (approximately 3.5 ounces) and bulk to the overall package.  Easy to slide into a backpack, briefcase or purse, this shell is a good option for the person on-the-go.  It provides good protection for the back and sides of the iPad 2 and a thin lip around the edges of the screen protects your device from touching the surface of your desk or table, should you leave it facing screen side down.

The Mizu Shell for the iPad 2 is available in black, white or red and your can get it from the Proporta website now.

What I liked: Sleek design, lightweight, easy access to buttons and ports.

What I didn’t like: Provides minimal screen protection and can’t use with Apple’s new Smart Cover.

To buy or not to buy: The Proporta Mizu Shell is a good option for anyone looking for this style of case.  If you also need screen protection, you might want to consider purchasing a sleeve to use with it.

iPad Sees Continued Growth in Mobile Ad Impressions

    Posted: 14 Apr 2011 08:45 AM PDT

Mobile advertising company Millennial Media reported today that Android phones continue to lead ad impressions across its advertising network.  Android phones claimed 48% of all ad impressions putting it ahead of the iPhone, which had 31%.

In their March report, tablets saw one of the largest jumps of over 21% month-over-month and now make up 17% of all device impressions on Millennial Media’s network.  The iPad continues to be one of the most popular devices and saw a 7% month-over-month growth in the number of ads requested.

While Apple devices had only 31% of Millennial Media’s ad impression share, they produced 47% of the app revenue.  Apple’s results were helped by growing iPad demand and an increase in iPad applications. Android held the second spot with a 36% share of the app advertising revenue.

In Millennial’s March report, the iPhone held 19.24% of the ad impression market share, a 4% increase over the previous month. The jump was tied to the increase of Verizon iPhone impressions, which accounted for over 8% of the U.S. iPhone impressions. The Blackberry Curve, with 5.3% of all ad impressions, edged out the HTC EVO to earn the second spot on Millennial Media's top 20 smartphone list.

Among mobile device makers, Apple continues to lead with 32.08% of all ads served. Samsung and HTC had another strong month with 15.22% and 10.69% market share this past month, putting them in second and third place respectively.

iPad 2 New Accessories – iWah, Mivizu, Maclove

    Posted: 14 Apr 2011 07:35 AM PDT

The iPad 2 accessory lineup continues to grow. Several accessory makers have just launched new gear that will fit your iPad 2 just fine.

In this edition, we feature a folio-style case with the ability to fold the front cover for use as a keyboard/video stand; a case designed to work with or without Apple’s Smart Cover; and a stand that will help musicians use their iPad 2 to control various guitar effects during a concert.

    The iWah Stands

The iPad has infiltrated many segments since it was launched over a year ago. One market segment that has become quite interesting for Apple’s tablet, is the music business. Several music recording applications for guitarists have made it onto the App Store, and have proven to be a worthy choice.

II:XX has released two stands for the iPad 2 that have been designed to work with iPad guitar amps and provide new ways to use the iPad’s accelerometer and gyroscope to control multiple guitar effects, as well as controlling volume swells.

The iWah Original for the iPad 2 allows the guitarist to play and record the “wah” effect in real time versus using the “auto” selection in most music apps. The company also will be launching the iWah 2.0 for iPad 2, which is in prototype stages at the moment, but will be an economical alternative to the iWah Original. The main difference on the iWah 2.0 model is that you will not have the choice of either landscape or portrait mode due to the absence of the iPad cradle.

Both stands are made of aircraft 6061 T-6 aluminum with a bead blasted finish. Other colors are available upon request. The iWah Original comes with an iPad cradle that allows both landscape and portrait mode. A magnetic “lock” and pin feature holds the iPad cradle in place, and also includes silicone tubing and bumpers to protect your iPad. The cradle design allows the iPad to remain plugged in for continuous charge.

The iWah Original carries a suggested retail price of $135, while the iWah 2.0 will set you back $99.

    Mivizu’s Sense Case

Mivizu just launched a full grain leather iPad 2 case with sealed magnets to power on and off the iPad 2. The Sense offers a great leather option for value conscious iPad owners.

The case serves a dual purpose. As a keyboard stand, you can fold it back to tilt the iPad 2 into a comfortable writing position. You can also use it as a video stand. The case also comes with all required openings for access to all controls, ports, and cameras, and sealed magnets are included in the cover for compatibility with the iPad 2's automatic sleep/wake function.

The Mivizu case is available for $30 on Amazon.

    Maclove Jumper Case

Maclove has unveiled their new Jumper case for iPad 2. The case has been designed to work with or without Apple’s Smart Cover.

The case features a hybrid soft case design, and a removable hard shell piece for side coverage when the Smart Cover is not attached to your iPad 2. Maclove has released the Jumper case in multiple colors to match Apple's Smart Covers. The case will set you back $39.
