| It’s Tyrannosaurus Rex! – Oceanhouse Media’s Newest iPad App Posted: 19 Apr 2011 09:57 PM PDT
"As an app, It's Tyrannosaurus Rex! comes to life with bold illustrations, great sound effects and an easy-to-follow narrative, all the while keeping in mind its young audience," said Claire Fennessey, Chief Marketing Officer at Palm Publishing, LLC, home of the Soundprints imprint. "Kids love dinosaurs and this story takes a fun and educational look at life in the prehistoric world." It's Tyrannosaurus Rex! teaches kids about some of the prehistoric creatures that once roamed the earth. Written by Dawn Bentley and illustrated by wildlife and natural history artist Karen Carr, this digital book is a wonderful teaching tool for young kids. With the seal of approval from paleontologists at the Smithsonian Institution, parents can be sure the information included in the app is accurate. Kids will follow along with Tyrannosaurus Rex as she interacts with other dinosaurs and searches for food. They’ll also learn dinosaur names and interesting statistics during their educational journey in a prehistoric world. It's Tyrannosaurus Rex! was designed to help meet the needs of multiple skill levels and provides three ways for kids to read. Read to Me lets kids listen to the story and watch as words are highlighted when read. Read it Myself allows readers to read the book at their own pace while Auto Play reads the story to you and advances automatically, more like a movie. Additional features of the digital book include original artwork, picture/word association, professional audio narration and scene-by-scene custom background audio. It’s Tyrannosaurus Rex! is the first in a series of Oceanhouse Media books created in conjunction with Soundprints. You can download this universal app from the App Store now for $2.99. » Related posts:

| Pay-Per-Install iOS Apps now Banned from the App Store Posted: 19 Apr 2011 09:21 PM PDT
In an effort to weed out junk apps from the top spots of the App Store rankings, Apple just started to ban apps that “manipulate or cheat the user reviews or chart ranking in the App Store with fake or paid reviews, or any other inappropriate methods.” These apps often use mechanisms such as pay-per-install to manipulate their ranking: in order to gain access to locked features within an app, users are forced to install other apps on their device, as a way to ‘pay’ for the features, instead of using more conventional methods such as in-app purchases. As a result, some of the downloaded apps rank high on the App Store charts, even though very few users actually care about them. According to freemium experts such as Tapjoy, a slew of iOS developers using the method recently received rejection notices from Apple for their new apps. Apple is obviously trying to prevent the App Store from being flooded with more junk apps, and pseudo-free apps, a problem that plagues other eco-systems such as the Android market, which embrace the freemium model. Apple is also trying to protect one of its main revenue streams, as allowing pay-per-install methods could eventually kill the in-app purchases model, a way for Apple to keep 30 percent of all transactions within the iOS eco-system. While Apple’s move will most likely enrage several iOS developers, the new policy should benefit iOS device owners, as the charts published by the App Store will now prioritize the quality of the apps, and not just their popularity. | Violet’s Bunny Trouble – iPad App Review Posted: 19 Apr 2011 02:44 PM PDT
Violet is back again and more fun than ever! This time around, the imaginative little girl (aka Phantom Girl) is determined to help her classmates locate their sneaky class pet. This new Violet app includes lots of fun interactive and animated features appropriate for kids ages 4-8 years old. Children will enjoy listening to the story or reading it themselves as they flip through the pages of this book. The good times continue as they explore each page by tapping on different objects. Younger kids are able to get hints about tappable objects when they turn on the Outlines option on the Home screen. Dotted lines appear around objects with items hidden behind them, but don’t stop there. Lights turn on and off, eggs move around the screen as you tip your iPad from side to side, water comes out of a faucet and much more, so encourage kids to continue tapping until everything is discovered. Additional features include a Read to Me option, the ability to turn music on and off, hand-drawn illustrations by award winning artist Allison Keeme and page curl navigation. Can’t get enough of Violet, check out the My Black Dog Books website for coloring pages, games and an interactive sketchpad. Enjoy! What I liked: The Violet book series includes fresh stories, entertaining characters and fun adventures! Hunting for Easter eggs and building a new home for Mr. Cottontail were my favorite interactive features in Violet’s Bunny Trouble. What I didn’t like: The Read to Me function requires kids to tap the speaker button located at the top left corner of the every page to have the text read to them. I think it would be nice to have an option for the text to be read automatically, every time the page is turned. To buy or not to buy: Yes! Violet’s Bunny Trouble combines a fun story with plenty of interactive features sure entertain your young children. Whether a long time Violet app fan or someone new to the scene, I think Violet’s Bunny Trouble is worth adding to your collection of kids apps. This universal app is available in the App Store now for $2.99. » Related posts:

| Asphalt 6: Adrenaline for iPad – Game Review Posted: 19 Apr 2011 01:17 PM PDT
The controls are simple enough, the default control scheme requires two hands to steer (hopefully like your real car!) your vehicle automatically accelerates, but if you want to brake just tap the left side of the screen. Alternate control options are available for those who want complete control. The first of many modes is "Career" in which racers can advance through different kinds of races unlocking better cars along the way. In each race money is earned which can be used to buy new parts, tune-ups, and cars. The real trick is earning the right number of stars to unlock them so that you have the option to buy them. Earning stars can be as easy as drifting or as difficult as taking down your fellow racers. Every time you complete a certain number of races successfully you are upgraded to a new class, but be sure to upgrade your car too! When you only have the time for one race or there's one specific type that you want to practice, head over to "Free Race". Here you have the option of choosing your track, type of race, and of course your car. The money that you earn racing here will transfer over to your career, but you cannot earn any more stars. Earning money here should allow you to buy upgrades in your career as they become available. A third option is multiplayer where you can challenge friends locally via Bluetooth or WiFi, or connect to Gameloft's online service that will match you with other players. Using Gameloft Live requires a simple registration so that you can sign in, but it provides very fast load times and matchmaking so it is worth completing the process. Here are a few basic tips for the newly licensed Asphalt racers: Use your boost when it's full, watch out for shortcuts, make small adjustments when using accelerometer steering, keep a watch on your money reserves, and upgrade your cars whenever possible. Oh and just one more thing, squash your opponents! What I liked: Fast load times, attention to detail, and ease of control all make this game accessible and fun for all ages. Some racing games have extremely unrealistic gravity engines, but I love that you can send rivals flying through the air. What I didn't like: It is a little difficult to find a comfortable medium using the accelerometer controls. To buy or not to buy: As far as racing games go, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD has it all. Crashes, nitro boosts, jumps, and sharp looking sports cars going insanely fast. What's not to like?
