Samsung Galaxy S: Android Gingerbread update stopped by Vodafone

Samsung Galaxy S: Android Gingerbread update stopped by Vodafone

A couple of days ago we reported to you that owners of the Samsung Galaxy S on Vodafone, could begin downloading the Android update for their handsets. But today we have news that the Android Gingerbread update has been stopped by Vodafone.

Gareth Beavis from TechRadar is reporting that Vodafone posted on its forum and said “Due to an issue with the Gingerbread update for the Samsung Galaxy S, its roll out has been temporarily suspended by Google."

Vodafone went on to say that it wasn't a problem with their version of the Galaxy S, but were working with Samsung to correct the problem. No details of what the exact problem was, but must be annoying for owners wanting to download the new operating system for their handsets.

As you can imagine the rumor mill has begun with some reports suggesting an issue with the camera application was causing problems in some regions. Many owners must have already downloaded the Gingerbread update to their devices as soon as it went live, so until there is a fix could be left with faulty software.

Have you updated your Galaxy S yet? Have you noticed any problems?

iPhone 5: New Specs Rumors Suggest 12.6MP Camera and 1080p Video

iPhone 5: New Specs Rumors Suggest 12.6MP Camera and 1080p Video

Earlier on we brought you an indefinite confirmation that the iPhone 5 would be out in September rather than Summer due to a fresh report from Reuters. Now we have some more specs rumors to tell you about, and it’s pretty exciting if it turns out to be true.

Fresh reports are suggesting that OmniVision, a company which has previously supplied Apple with rear camera sensors have produced a new camera sensor, one which is meant to be a 12.6MP sensor and have support for 1080p video recording, according to this report from Redmond Pie.

According to the report, no company has placed an order for this new camera sensor yet, but obviously with the iPhone 5 now likely to release in September, there’s plenty of time for this to change. How amazing would it be if Apple upgraded their 5MP iPhone with a 12MP iPhone – it really is mouthwatering stuff.

The report above also suggests that Apple may ditch OmniVision in favor of choosing a camera sensor manufactured by Sony, but hopefully this isn’t the case. As soon as we get more details on this rumor, we’ll let you know.

Do you think it is likely that Apple will bring a 12MP camera to the iPhone 5, or is this merely pipe dreams?

iMac stock low ahead of possible refreash?

iMac stock low ahead of possible refreash?

Last month we told you of a rumor that the latest version of Apple's iMac was on route to the US. Today we have news that current iMac stock is low ahead of a possible refresh. This is similar to what happened recently before the release of the iPad 2 and MacBook Pro update.

Mark Gurman from 9 to 5 Mac is reporting that they have been told by three sources in different countries, that iMac supplies are running low. These include an Asian country and the US. They have been supplied with a screen shot that shows all four iMac models are "constrained", and there is no date for any new shipments.

Sources in the US have also stated that iMac deliveries are also very tight, and it isn't restricted to just iMacs, as components are also constrained. The hardest to get hold of at the moment are hard drives and graphics chips. This could also point to an iMac refresh shortly.

We have spoken before that the next iMacs could have Sandy Bridge processors, and the new Thunderbolt technology as part of the refresh. Some of our readers have commented on a wider choice of screen sizes would also be a nice option to have with the next iMac.

Are you waiting for any refresh before buying an iMac?

Windows Phone 7 NoDo update arrives for more devices

Windows Phone 7 NoDo update arrives for more devices

The Windows Phone 7 update has caused Microsoft some headaches since they first started to roll it out. Owners of Samsung handsets found it bricked their handsets, which led to Microsoft suspending the update. It was then released again but some Samsung owners continued to experience problems. Now Microsoft has begun rolling out the NoDo update to more devices.

Nancy Gohring of PCWorld is reporting that users of the LG Quantum and Samsung Focus can now get the software update, after Microsoft made it available for the devices. If you are an owner of the HTC Surround, AT&T and Microsoft are still working on the updates for the device.

If you have one of the handsets that can now get the update, your device should display a message saying the updates are ready. Handsets check for updates every three days, so to get both of them may take several days.

But users can always connect their handsets to their PCs and download them manually using the Zune software. The problems Microsoft has encountered with the updates should not affect the Mango update which is planned for later this year.

Have you downloaded the updates yet? How did you get on?

The Last Guardian, ICO / Shadow of the Collossus: PS3 Release Date Delays

We have some bad news for PS3 owners now, as Sony has just confirmed that the highly anticipated The Last Guardian game has been delayed. Not only that, but the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection titles have also been delayed as well. All of which were expected to release at some point this year.

Fumito Ueda, the director for the game revealed the news in a post over on the official EU PlayStation Blog. He revealed that the team need more development time on the game in order to ensure that gamers receive a game which is full of ‘quality content’. Here is the official word from Ueda:

”To provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfil First Party Studio’s obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing.”

He went on to give his apologies for delaying the game to those that have been waiting patiently for The Last Guardian to release. However, he didn’t give a new period for when the game will be out, instead stating that he’ll announce this at a ‘later period’.

If that wasn’t bad enough for PS3 owners, we can also confirm that the ICO / Shadow of the Collossus HD remakes have also been delayed by Fumito Ueda and the team. Again, no word on when the game will be out, but we’re guessing it will now be pushed into a 2012 release.

What are your thoughts on this? It’s pretty disappointing since the games were looking amazing during their Tokyo Game Show reveal. How many of you were hoping to play the game this year?

Centipede: Infestation – New Game Heading to Nintendo 3DS / Wii

We have some rather interesting news now for those of you that remember Atari's classic shoot 'em up arcade game Centipede (which was first released back in 1980), as we've just received word that a new game – titled Centipede: Infestation – is heading to the Nintendo Wii and 3DS.

According to a recent article by Wade Hinkle at gamingunwrapped.com, both Atari and video game developer WayForward are currently working on the new Centipede: Infestation game, and hope to release the title sometime in the fall, although we don't exactly know when at this stage.

The Cenitpede: Infestation game – which has been described as a post-apocalyptic action experience with a run-n-gun shooting style – sees players taking on the role of an orphaned teenage hero called Max, as he makes his way through the wasteland while trying to fight off giant bugs.

As gamers make their way through seven different environments and 40 different stages, they will find themselves surrounded by mutated spiders, grubs, moths, caterpillars, beetles and boss insects. To defeat the mutant creatures, players have to use the various different weapons available.

These include a Mine Launcher, Nuke Cannon, Freezethrower, Lightning Orb Gun and more. The game also comes with a 2-player co-op multiplayer feature, which enables players to team up with a friend if they choose to. You can view a trailer for the upcoming game via gamingunwrapped.com.

CNN Launches News App for Android-Based Smartphones

Back in February of this year we announced that CNN had just released a news app that was designed exclusively for Android 3.0 Honeycomb-based tablet PCs. Now we have even more good news, as CNN has also launched its news app for Android-based smartphones.

As Kelly over at intomobile.com recently reported, the CNN News app enables Android users to access the vast amount of news that's generated by CNN every day, right from their smartphone. The app includes breaking news stories, live video feeds, photos and even on-demand video.

The application also allows users to browse through content that is generated from CNN's crowd-sourced news outlet feature, iReport. Users will even be able to share important and compelling stories with their friends via popular social networks such as Twitter or Facebook.

CNN's News app is available for all Android-based smartphones that are running Android 2.1 OS or above, and includes both a US and international version. The application will even enable users to toggle between the two different versions if they want to.

Apple choose Toshiba to supply iPhone displays

Apple choose Toshiba to supply iPhone displays

We told you yesterday that Apple had added to its suppliers for the iPad 2 screen parts. Today it seems the company has been busy organizing suppliers for other key components for its iPhone, as reports are suggesting that Apple have chosen Toshiba to supply iPhone displays.

An article over at Reuters is reporting that Apple will be investing in its production of small displays, and have dropped Sharp for that work in the process. Sharp saw its shares drop as much as 2.7 percent following the rumors of the deal, but later released a statement saying that there was no truth in the rumor.

The original report came from Nikkan Kogyo who declined to comment after Sharp released their statement on the matter. The report also said that Apple had been in talks with both companies about, investing 100 billion yen a piece in production lines for small LCD screens. These displays are thought to be for a future version of the iPhone.

It is thought Apple has been looking to spread the risk of supplies for components of their devices following the recent natural disaster in Japan.

Droid Bionic Delayed by Motorola

There has been a lot of talk about the Motorola Droid Bionic since it was first unveiled a few months ago. The feature packed handset was thought to get released soon, but we are now getting news the Droid Bionic is being delayed by Motorola.

Scott Webster from Cnet is reporting in an article that it appears the handset will not arrive before the third quarter of this year. A spokeswoman from Motorola has been talking with The Wall Street Journal, and said the handset will be delayed until the summer.

The reason given was so several improvements can be made, and to give users “an even better consumer experience.” What this means exactly is anybody's guess.

Full details of the changes were not given, but there has been speculation that the Bionic has been scrapped in favor of another device. The replacement device is not expected until the summer at the earliest. When the Bionic was first seen at the event in Las Vegas it impressed many people, so even though it has been delayed at least it is still coming out eventually.

What do you think is the reason for the delay with the Droid Bionic?

Portal 2: Amazing Review Scores, but Gamers Not Happy on Metacritic

Portal 2: Amazing Review Scores, but Gamers Not Happy on Metacritic

Portal 2 is already available to buy in the US and if you have read some reviews for the game, you’ll know that the game has received fantastic reviews, with many publications giving Portal 2 a perfect score. However, this is contrast to what some gamers are saying about Valve’s long awaited sequel.

While it’s a known fact that many gamers wait until they read reviews from respected publications such as IGN and Eurogamer, it’s also a common fact that Metacritic scores have the final say on the game, and for those who are yet to pick up Portal 2, you may be in for a shock.

The current Metacritic score stands at 7.2 for the game, but the amount of negative reviews pouring in may be cause of concern for you. At the moment, there are almost 180 negative reviews for the game, with gamers stating that the full package isn’t worth the money, with some gamers even calling it a ‘minigame’ and a Valve ‘cash shop’.

A lot of the criticism seems to be pointed at the fact that the game’s single player campaign only lasts around 4 -5 hours, depending on how fast you play through it. The following user review seems to reflect the general mood following the game’s US release:

”This game is not worth the hype at all. The way Valve has been pushing this I was expecting the second coming of Christ but instead I got a niche, 4 hour long minigame. Worst of all is the cash shop… as if the $45 price tag for the game alone isn’t enough. ”

What are your thoughts on this? For those of you who have already played it, are you disappointed as well with the final result? We’re hoping a few of you are going to stick up for Portal 2 so we hear both sides of the argument, because at the moment – it doesn’t look good for Valve.

iPhone 5: Next Generation Model Releases in September

iPhone 5: Next Generation Model Releases in September

If you needed further confirmation that the iPhone 5 won’t be releasing this Summer, this is probably is it. It has now been reported by a very reputable source that the iPhone 5 will now be arriving this September, with production of the next generation iPhone due to start in July.

That source is none other than Reuters, who have been told the information by three different sources who are familiar with the matter – yeah that old one again. Anyway, the main point here is that the iPhone 5 won’t be shown at WWDC for a change, but instead at Apple’s Fall event in September.

Reuters add in their report that the design is going to be the same as the iPhone 4, as detailed in our article yesterday, and they back up strong speculation that the iPhone 5 will include a dual-core processor, most likely to be the A5 processor as seen in the iPad 2.

What do you make of this fresh confirmation from Reuters? Considering that they have decided to publish this, it’s highly likely that this information is accurate, more so than it would be from say the WSJ as they have been wrong about Apple rumors once or twice in the past.

iPhone 5 this September folks – give us your thoughts.

iOS 5 Multitasking Teaser shown on White iPhone 4

iOS 5 Multitasking Teaser shown on White iPhone 4

We have some pretty exciting news to bring all Apple fans now, as it seems as if an early version of iOS 5 or even an unreleased version of iOS 4 has found it’s way into the wild – captured and previewed on a White iPhone 4 over in Vietnam.

Once again, this information has surfaced from Tinhte, as reported from 9to5Mac. Tinhte by the way, is the same blog which revealed a brand new video of the unreleased Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 earlier on this week.

However, they’re back again with some brand new videos showing of a new expose style multitasking feature which definitely hasn’t been seen on any iPhone device yet. Unlike a double click on the current iOS which brings up the multitasking menu on the bottom of the iPhone, a double click shown in the video reveals a brand new interface which takes up the entire screen.

It looks pretty slick visually, and looks like a much more efficient way to manage your apps compared to the previous method. Another video shown below reveals a brand new folder interface as well, so the questions on our minds are as follows:

Is this the real thing here, or just a clever mod on a jailbroken device. If it is the real thing, is this an early look at some of the new features which will be coming in the highly anticipated iOS 5 update? Take a look at the videos below and let us know your thoughts on them. Do you like the new multitasking interface or not?

LG G-Slate: T-Mobile Release Date Revealed

We have some good news for those of you planning to get the impressive LG G-Slate tablet, as it looks like the official release date has just been revealed for it’s highly anticipated launch at T-Mobile. Best of all, it’s going to be available this week!

LG or T-Mobile still haven’t revealed official plans for the Android 3.0 device, although consumers had previously expected this to come out last month. Obviously it didn’t happen, but the good news is that new information acquired by TMoNews suggests that the G-Slate will finally be available to buy on April 20th, i.e within the next 24 hours.

Just to refresh, the device is definitely gaining a lot of attention, due to the fact that not only is it an Honeycomb tablet, but it also comes with great hardware specs such as a 1Ghz Tegra 2 dual-core processor, a 5 megapixel 3D rear camera and a separate 2MP front-facing camera for video chat.

How many of you have waited for the G-Slate to release on T-Mobile? Or have some of you already jumped the gun and picked up say, a Motorola Xoom with similar specs?

Update: We’ve just been informed about this updated page on the official T-Mobile Blog, indeed stating that the G-Slate will launch on April 20th, for $529.99 on a two year contract with T-Mobile after a $100 mail-in rebate. Great news then.

COD: Black Ops – Sneak Peek Trailer for ‘Escalation’ Map Pack

Back at the beginning of April an image appeared on the Australian GAME website, which appeared to reveal a brand new map pack for the hugely popular Call of Duty: Black Ops game. The map pack – titled 'Escalation' was then officially announced and dated by Activision about a week later.

Now we have even more good news for all you COD: Black Ops fans out there, as according to a recent article by Pete Davison on the gamepro.com website, the publisher has recently revealed a few more details, as well as releasing a sneak peek trailer for the upcoming 'Escalation' map pack.

As most of you will already know, the map pack will contain a total of five new maps, including a new 'zombie experience.' The other four multiplayer maps include Hotel, Convoy, Zoo and Stockpile, which is set in a remote Russian farming town that houses secret weapons production facilities.

The Hotel map will see gamers playing on the roof of a Cuban hotel and casino in Havana, while the Convoy map – which features close-quarters combat – takes place at the scene of an ambush. The Zoo map sees gamers fighting it out in a long-abandoned Russian zoo.

Unfortunately Activision chose to stay quiet about the 'Call of the Dead' zombie map at this stage, but promised fans that more details will arrive soon. The 'Escalation' map pack is out on May 3rd for the Xbox 360. You can view the trailer below this post. What new map are you looking forward to playing the most?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3: Should Second Chance Be Scrapped?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3: Should Second Chance Be Scrapped?

We are hoping that some details regarding the next Call of Duty video game will be revealed soon, however for the mean time we are enjoying getting feedback from our readers regarding what they want to see in the next game, which many believe will be called Modern Warfare 3.

Today we are going to talk about one of the game’s most unpopular perks, Second Chance, for many this is the most unrealistic thing about the last few Call of Duty games and we wonder whether people want it to be scrapped next time around.

Masters of Second Chance will want it to say, but the few times I have used it I have failed to have much success and I think that it ruins the game. Here are a few reasons why many think it should be gone / changed.

The thing which annoys me and many others is the fact that people can get shot and in the split second between the bullet hitting the enemy and them falling to the floor they can pull out their pistol, aim and kill you pretty much instantly. Many think that shots in the legs and arms should allow people to go into Second Chance, however torso, neck or headshots should stop this perk from working.

One idea which I read about a while back is to keep Second Chance but perhaps have a 2 second delay before you can fire your first bullet. I have put people on second chance with my AK47 many times and sprayed a little when the enemy is on the deck only to find that before I spray 2 or 3 bullets (which must take a few millisecond) they have pulled out their pistol and killed me.

Also I think that Second Chance should only work if people have a pistol as a secondary weapon, if you have a launcher on your back or a crossbow etc you won’t have access to the pistol unless you are put on Second Chance, again this is very unrealistic and quite unfair.

What are your views on Second Chance? Should it be scrapped? Should it be changed? Let us know in the comments section below.

We have some rather interesting news now for those of you that are thinking of buying the much-anticipated Deus Ex: Human Revolution, as Square Enix has just announced that the first-person role-playing game is receiving a very special – and extremely limited – 'Collector's Edition.'

However, as Pete Davison over on the gamepro.com website recently reported, the 'Collector's Edition' will only be available for those that live in Australia, New Zealand and select European countries. Unfortunately there is no news at this stage on which retailers will be selling the special pack.

The upcoming 'Collector's Edition – which will go on sale on August 25th in New Zealand and Australia and August 26th in Europe – includes a 40-page art book, a 'highly collectible Adam Jensen action figure' and a new mission that features a cameo from an original Deus Ex character.

Sony ending PSPgo production in readiness for NGP?

Later this year gamers will be eager to get their hands on Sony's new handheld gaming system the NGP, and there are reports emerging from Japan that Sony has ended production of the PSP Go.

Ben Parfitt from MCV is reporting that according to reports in Japan Sony may have finally given up on the PSP Go. The Go is a cut-down version of the original PSP but has no UMD optical drive. The unit also has a sliding screen, but the device didn't really hit it off with gaming fans as basically it wasn't as good as the original.

The report from Japan which has been translated seems to be from a Sony Shop employee, and claims that production has stopped and no more shipments will be arriving at retail outlets. The device has also been removed from the Japanese Sony Store. MCV has been told by a source that UK retailers will also not be receiving any more deliveries of the device.

Sony may have ceased production of the Go to retool machines to start making the NGP, which is expected later this year. Are you sad to see the end of the PSP Go?
