Wireless Universal Control Device Now Available for Peel Personal TV Listing App

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 11:30 AM PST

Peel today announced the hardware companion for its popular Peel Personal TV Listings app.

The “universal control” device, as the company is calling it, adds remote control functionality to the free iOS app. Using Peel’s app, you can easily find TV shows that pertain to your interests. You tell the app what kind of shows you like to watch, and it will make recommendations based on your interests. It’s like a more personable version of your typical TV guide listing.

The universal control allows you to select a show from your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and then will change the channel to that show for you. The device allows you to wirelessly interact with your TV, cable box, Blu-ray player, AV receiver and more through your iOS device. With the app, you can even adjust volume from anywhere within range of the universal control.

While the Peel app itself is available on iTunes for free, the universal control device will cost you. The device is now available at Apple Stores nationwide for $99. According to a press release by the company, “Peel will be conducting product demonstrations in New York City Apple Stores in March. Check New York City Apple Store calendars for more details.”

Check out the debut trailer for the universal control “fruit” below.

Mini Motor Racing from The Binary Mill Set To Roar

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 11:04 AM PST

We’ve seen overhead view racers before. Most notably is the great Reckless Racing. But Mini Motor Racing is set to raise the bar yet again with a great arcade racing style reminiscent of Micro Machines.

We got a quick and very fun look at Mini Motor Racing during GDC. Once I started playing, I didn’t want to give Binary Mill’s device back. It’s much more of an arcade racer than the previously mentioned Reckless Racing. It also reminds me, fondly, or the Micro Machines racing games from Nintendo. The overall look is more comical or toy like.

MMR features some great retina display graphics, 4 different upgradeable car types, and 20 different tracks. Also included is an interesting night racing mode. You have a choice of control methods – something that we’ve come to expect in racers these days. I found the directional wheel to be the best for me. Very easy to control.

You can see from the video that there is a lot of fun to be had. We expect MMR hit in the next few months. Keep an eye out.

Dragon Age: Legends coming to iOS devices

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 09:30 AM PST

Today is a very Dragon Age themed day for me. Dragon Age 2 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC doesn’t come out in the UK until tomorrow. As one of the UK writers here on staff, I was fortunate that my copy arrived a day early. Since then I’ve spent all my time playing it as well as signing up to Dragon Age: Legends on Facebook. For those not already in the know, the Facebook game is a turn-based 2D RPG and it’s really pretty cool, as well as offering link ups to the main game.

It turns out there’ll be more ways to play the franchise soon too. As reported by Pocket Gamer and TouchArcade earlier today, it looks like Dragon Age: Legends is on its way to an iOS and Android device near you soon.

Details are scant but the game’s official site clearly states that iOS and Android apps are coming soon, and offers some mock up images of the app running on the respective systems.

Here’s hoping more details are forthcoming. You’ll know as soon as we know.

Collision Effect Review

By Jason Fanguy on March 11th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: EYE-CATCHING, ENTERTAINING EXPLOSIONS
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Collision Effect is one of those games that you just can’t judge by looking at it, although it makes for good eye candy. Its dazzling graphics and perceived simplicity will easily sink their hooks into you and make you come back for more.

Developer: Chilingo, Ltd.
Price: .99
Version Reviewed: 1.1

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

My warden mother always told me: “Jason, never judge a book by its cover.” While this may seem like sound advice, it’s also costly, as I was perpetually having to return comic books to the store from which I bought them, thinking I was settling down to read Archie and Jughead, even though “National Geographic” was emblazoned on the cover. Try as I might, I simply had to look inside each book to ensure I was getting Richie RIch instead of that useless Reader’s DIgest.

That said, Collision Effect is one of those games that you just can’t judge by looking at it, although it makes for good eye candy. Its dazzling graphics and perceived simplicity will easily sink their hooks into you but, ironically, it’s the game’s depth and resilience that will keep you coming back.

At its heart, Collision Effect is an arcade action/puzzler, wherein users must guide groups of colored orbs, called Zybbles, into each other as they’re introduced on your screen, while avoiding orbs of a different color, in order to gain points, clear the screen and advance to the next stage. While this may sound easy, those daggum different-colored orbs enjoy impeding your progress, forcing players to strategize (which orb you touch for the others to merge to is crucial, as all others move to this point, clearing paths for other, different-colored orbs), using timing and coordination to successfully advance in the game, creating multiple, simultaneous explosions for bonus points.

Tapping any one of a group of colored orbs will cause all like-colored orbs to advance toward it, in a straight line, until they collide and disappear from your screen, via a dazzling explosion of color particles. Players must use the afore-mentioned skills, however, as that straight line, more often than not, has a point along it occupied by an orb of a different color. When orbs of different colors meet, it’s game over.

There are also a few power-ups in the game which allow you to protect Zybbles, gain more points, explode additional Zybbles and slow time to get more/bigger combos. In addition, gameplay is divided into two modes: Action, an endurance mode which challenges players to create explosions and advance as far as they can in the game before succumbing and Puzzle, a series of pre-configured challenges which forces players to find the solution to clearing each screen of all orbs, spanning three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal and Hard.

The game’s sound effects and music are well-integrated; better, in fact, than most of its kind. From the ominous, foreboding soundtrack to the reverberating crash of each collision, this is one game you’ll want to experience with the volume up.

While Collision Effect is fun and engaging in Action mode, its Puzzle sibling feels somewhat incomplete, as if it were thrown in as an afterthought to add depth to the game. Those who enjoy the puzzles will find much re-playability in the game, however, while those drawn to the action mode will eventually move on, once they feel their .99 has expended itself.

Overall, Collision Effect is worth its asking price, especially if you dig the puzzles!

Pizarro Review

By Jennifer Allen on March 11th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SIMPLE FUN
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Pizarro is a great arcade game that’s as simple as it is compelling.

Long ago when I first had a PC, one of the first gaming experiences I had was with a game called JezzBall. A quiet and unassuming title, its entire focus was on the concept of containing atoms (red and white balls) within a small amount of space by blocking off the areas. You’d do this by drawing lines across the screen thus eventually wiping out 75% of the screen’s area. Pizarro follows a very similar format and is just as addictive too.

This time round, you’re creating circles which have to cover 80% of the screen in order to move onto the next level. Circles are created by holding your finger down on the screen, the longer you hold, the bigger the circle. Of course it’s not quite that simple as not only have you got a time limit to contend with but also enemies. These enemies much like in JezzBall before it, consist of red dots which float about randomly. If they hit the circle while you’re creating it, you have to start again. The time limit isn’t strict as while it starts at a minute long, the faster you complete levels, the more time is added on. The further you progress, the more red dots come at you and the more precisely you have to place circles.

Besides the simple visuals, Pizarro offers some great music to go alongside the simple yet addictive fun. It’s bluesy in nature and reacts to each action within the game, adding a refreshing interactive element while also continuing the soothing feel to the game.

Pizarro is extraordinarily simple. Its sole mode of play is this level progression method, understandably so considering I’m not sure what could be added. But it is excellent fun. Game Center Leaderboards and achievements add to this with some pretty tough yet satisfying achievements to aim for. Pizarro is a simple yet compelling formula at an ideal price.

The Creeps Holiday Edition Review

The Creeps Holiday Edition Review

By Bonnie Eisenman on March 11th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: EXCELLENT TD
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

The Creeps! Holiday Edition is an upbeat, sugary-sweet skin on a great tower defense game. As casual or hardcore as you want it to be, The Creeps! is just waiting to steal away your free time…

Developer: Super Squawk Software
Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.5.5

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The original The Creeps was one of the first awesome tower defense games in the App Store; our own Kevin Stout described it as “almost perfect in my eyes” in his review. Now, its developers have released a new app entitled The Creeps! Holiday Edition. The Creeps! Holiday Edition is a spin-off app with new, holiday-themed content. In this case, the game has received a Valentines-themed makeover as well as new level layout. The gameplay remains the same, however, and it’s a great example of tower defense done right.

The basic premise of The Creeps mimics that of most tower defense games. “Creeps” emerge from a portal at one end of the screen and follow a preset path, marching towards a child’s bed. If they reach said bed, they presumably give the kid nightmares, so your job is to protect him! The game arms you with a variety of weapons, from an electrifying flashlight to boomerangs to toy blasters. You build these “towers” on the map, and they swivel to attack Creeps as they march by. During the game, you earn cash by destroying Creeps or obstacles in the landscape. Cash can then be spent on new towers or upgrades to old towers.

One thing I love about The Creeps! is its level designs, which add variety to each play. On some levels, for example, obstacles (in the form of giant hearts or diamonds, for example!) squat on the field, so you’ll have to destroy them before you can place towers on those spots. In one level, it was almost impossible to reach any Creeps if you left the obstacles untouched! (The Creeps! Holiday Edition has different levels than its “normal” counterpart app.) There’s a good amount of strategy involved, and you’ll have to carefully juggle building your towers to prepared for each wave of oncoming Creeps.

But how does this app compare to its original sibling? The Creeps! Holiday Edition appears to be a little brief, with only a handful of levels. Still, there’s enough replay value given three difficulty levels and bonus badges for things like destroying all obstacles in a level. I also like the Valentine’s Day theme; it’s whimsical and bright, and in my view an improvement from the somewhat dark, dull cartoon style of the original Creeps. The Holiday Edition may be small, but it’s very fun, and I expect it’ll receive more themed updates in the future.

If you’re a Creeps! fan looking for more tower-defense goodness, the Holiday Edition is a no-brainer purchase. If you’ve yet to buy the first one, you may want to check it out, as it has more levels. Still, The Creeps! Holiday Edition is a great continuation of an excellent tower defense game, full of challenge, humor, and engaging fun. Any fan of the genre, or someone interested in diving in, should enjoy this one immensely.
