| Visual Apex VApex Fixed Frame Screens First Look | last modified March 16, 2011 02:15 | | Visual Apex has released a new line of fixed screens that are easily assembled at home and are quite affordable. Sporting a CinemaWhite high gain fabric (1.1 gain, 80 degree viewing angle), the VApex (get it, Visual Apex = VApex) screens come in 92, 100, 106, 120, and 135 inches diagonal for $329, $339, $349, $399, and $499 respectively. It's hard to imagine that you could DIY a screen for less than the cost of the VApex screen. Assembly looks to be a snap, the materials all look to be very high quality, and you can go from box to watching a movie in less than an hour (it seems). If you've had your eye on a projector to bring your home theater to the next level, the Visual Apex VApex screens should be in the back of your mind. | | |

| | DISH Remote Access - First on iPad | last modified March 16, 2011 10:28 | | DISH Network kind had an epiphany today and realized that they had made some news. Basically, any DISH Network customer who has a broadband-connected, Sling-enabled device like the Sling Adapter or a DISH Network ViP 722k or 922 receiver can check out live TV or the contents of their DVR on the iPad. So now you can whip out your iPad or iPhone to set your DVR, record shows, manage your programs, or even use your device like a fully-functioning remote control. | | |
| | | | | | | Oppo BDP-93 Universal 3D Blu-ray Player Full Review | last modified December 31, 1969 06:00 | | How do you upgrade the number one solution for Blu-ray on the market? It's hard, but Oppo Digital did it by adding 3D Blu-ray capability to their new BDP-93 (still) Universal Blu-ray player. Oh, and they changed the chassis to eliminate the one thing Lexicon's Oppo seemed to improve on their player last year. Plus they also added more network functionality in the form of Netflix and Blockbuster on Demand streaming movie services. Come to think of it, they switched over to the ever-increasingly, highly regarded Marvell QDEO video processor and even added a second flexible HDMI output that can be used for dual monitors, or for sending just audio to an AV receiver. Oh, and the player supports wireless-N networking out of the box. Holy cow, they did a lot, and I'm still in the intro of the review. Hold tight, this may take a while. | | |
| | | Oppo BDP-93 & BDP-95 Universal Blu-ray Player Measurements Report | last modified March 14, 2011 02:25 | | Oppo proved that they can build a better mouse trap with their new BDP-9x series of Blu-ray players. Both players exhibited benchmark audio performance while the BDP-95 exceeded those marks to the point where we were measuring the limits of our $40k Audio Precision HDMI analyzer. Our tests proved that the BDP-93 and BDP-95 Blu-ray players are everything so many other so called "high end" players wish they could be and much more. We haven't run across any higher priced players that can better the overall performance of the BDP-93, let alone the BDP-95. Both are handsomely finished, giving their high performance a classy look. But is the BDP-95 worth 2X the cost of the BDP-93? Read our assessment to find out…. | | |
| | | RipDigital Audio CD Ripping Service Review | last modified March 14, 2011 01:40 | | Typically when we've reviewed CD ripping services we hear from a lot of end-users who would rather rip their own CDs to hard drive and can't understand why on earth you'd want to pay someone like RipDigital to do it for you. We get it. You're awesome. Now, if you can step away from the mirror for just one second, we'd like to show you a whole new world... a world of custom installers and people who generally value their time at a higher rate than those who can afford to rip 100s of CDs while they eat Slim Jims and check out reruns of Star Trek ToS (no offense, Gene). It's the CE professional that truly is targeted by this type of service. If you're doing an AV installation and your client has tons of CDs in his or her collection, there's got to be a better solution than paying one of your guys to sit there and rip each one to disc. | | |

| | | Perreaux Audiant 80i Integrated Amplifier First Look | last modified December 31, 1969 06:00 | The price of the Perreaux Audiant 80i clearly delineates it as an audiophile device. At just a hair shy of $3k, it's definitely a niche product. We like that they've taken some steps into the 20th century with the Audiant 80i including a home theater input (whatever that is), USB input, and touch screen control on the front. You can even control iTunes and Windows Media Player with the remote. With 80w x 2 into 2 channels, it's beef and weighs in at over 25 lbs while maintaining a 2.6" height. The Audiant 80i is a mix of old school integrated with some touches of new school technology. Perreaux is a company that you probably haven't heard of. They cater more toward an audiophile crowd. But when we saw the Audiant 80i Integrated Amp we thought two things - first, they put the "i" on the wrong side of the "80" and second, where are all the switches, buttons, and analogue power meters? The Audiant 80i brings in a refreshing mix of the old school features integrated amp lovers want with a few bells and whistles that they've probably been interested in but haven't had access to in a product. | | |

| | | Star Wars Episode 1 3D Theatrical Release Date is February 14, 2012 | last modified March 9, 2011 11:43 | I can't wait to see Star Wars again... I mean, it's been almost 3 years since I wrote George Lucas a check - the man is clearly due. Today, the Hollywood Reporter scooped the news that Star Wars Episode 1 will be re-released in 3D on Valentine's Day (February 14th) 2012. Lucas hopes that releasing the first installment of his blockbuster Star Wars Saga reasonably early in the year, away from summer season, will give it a wide open run at the box office and also establish the chance to sell merchandise through the balance of the calendar year. The program under discussion would make the release of the next movies in the series an annual event on the film calendar. If the first in the series finds success, the outstanding 5 films would track a year apart on equivalent dates. However, hinging on how the first release performs, the studios could likewise make a decision to open the subsequent entries in varying spots on the calendar. So are you waiting with baited breath for Lucas' 3D processed cash cow - or will you skip it and wait for the Blu-ray version (making this possibly the 6th time you've bought Star Wars on video)? | | |
| | | Lava LSP12 Subwoofer Review | last modified March 8, 2011 09:32 | Lava Subs are a relative newcomer to the consumer audio industry whose products are already attracting attention in various online forums for budget minded consumers serious about performance. The LSP12 is Lava's flagship subwoofer sporting a 12" woofer in a vented enclosure powered by a 250 watt amplifier and retailing for just under $340. When I was first offered the opportunity to review the LSP12, not knowing much about it (other than its retail price) I was quite prepared for or rather anticipated a ho-hum performance from a ho-hum product. In fact the LSP12 was quite the pleasant surprise, to the point I was continually impressed by the performance of this no-frills budget product. So what don't you get with the LSP12? Besides NOT getting the heavy price tag, you are also NOT getting the extremes of envelope-pushing performance, especially in terms of the extreme low-frequency output you may get from costlier subs populating the marketplace. The LSP12 certainly has its limits, but within those limits, it performs quite well. | | |

With 7.2 channels, 4 HDMI inputs, proprietary room correction, and Faroudja DCDi Edge upconversion, it may impress some people. Just not us. It does support 3D, audio return channel, and HDMI Standby pass-through so it isn't a compete wash. Since Sony receivers seem to go on immediate sale as soon as they hit the Sony Store, you can bet that it'll look like a steal when it ships. | | |
