First iPad 2 Spotted at Walmart Store!

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 08:18 PM PST

The iPad 2 will be officially released tomorrow at 5PM your local time. That’s just 19 hours away.

However, the first iPad 2 seems to have been spotted already at a Walmart store in central New York.

According to RazorianFly, New York resident Anthony Carretero has spotted what seems to be the first iPad 2 on store shelves.

The picture above shows two boxes. The box on the right seems to be the iPad 2 already on display at the Walmart store. If that is the case, this Walmart store is already displaying the iPad 2 well ahead of the Apple approved 5PM launch time.

Apple is very strict when launching their products, and most of all when we’re talking about the iPad. We don’t know if this was a mistake by one of Walmart’s employees, or if it was done on purpose to get consumers excited. Either way, Apple will not be too happy about this incident.

Are you ready for tomorrow? We will be covering the iPad 2 launch LIVE from Plano, Texas. Stay tuned!

iPad 2 Available for Purchase Online in Five Hours

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 07:24 PM PST

While the iPad 2 will be available at 5PM tomorrow (local time) at all Apple retail stores, as well as most Best Buy, Target, Walmart, at&t and Verizon stores, some folks may prefer to purchase their device online.

Apple will start taking online orders for the iPad 2 as early as 1 AM Pacific Time tomorrow – in about five hours -  for folks who live far away from any of the 10,000 points of sale that will carry the iPad 2, or for folks who simply do not want to wait in line for hours.

Apple today announced that iPad 2, the next generation of its magical device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading ebooks and much more, will be available tomorrow at 5 p.m. local time at all 236 Apple retail stores in the US and through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com) beginning at 1 a.m. PT.

While the online option might not be for everyone, especially for first time buyers, it’s a great way to avoid long lines, and might also be the only option for folks who happen to live far from any stores carrying the new iPad.

First time buyers might want to go to their local Apple Store instead though, as Apple Store employees will help them get started, and setup their new device.

iMovie and GarageBand for iPad Out

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 04:02 PM PST

iLife fans, rejoice, as the suite is finally coming to the iPad!

Earlier today, Apple finally released the two multimedia apps showcased at the iPad 2 announcement keynote last Wednesday, namely iMovie and GarageBand. Thanks to these apps, your iPad will instantly become a multimedia hub that will allow you to put together movies and songs in no time. One caveat though, while GarageBand will work with your existing iPad, iMovie requires an iPad 2 to work (more on that, including full apps descriptions, after the break).

iMovie

Make beautiful HD movies anywhere with iMovie, the fast and fun moviemaking app for iPhone, iPod touch, and the amazing new iPad 2. Designed for the Multi-Touch screen, iMovie puts everything you need to tell your story at your fingertips. Browse and play projects in the stunning Marquee view. Make a movie in minutes by adding video, photos, music, and sound effects. Then give it the Hollywood treatment by adding a theme, titles, and transitions. And you can share your movie with the world – right from iMovie.

Made for Multi-Touch.
• Tap to add video, photos, music, and sound effects.
• Drag to trim the length of any clip.
• Pinch to zoom the timeline.
• Slide to scrub through your project.
• On iPad, pinch vertically to open the Precision Editor.

Add professional polish with Themes.
• Choose from a selection of eight unique themes. Each theme includes a matching set of titles and transitions — and its own soundtrack.
• Instantly change themes or swap themed elements in your project.
• Titles and graphics automatically update with location data from your video.

Add photos, music, and sound effects.
• Add photos from your library, or snap a picture and drop it into your project.
• Use the automatic, face-aware Ken Burns effect, or pinch and drag to create your own.
• Choose from soundtracks that match iMovie themes, or select music from your own song library.
• Bring your movie to life with a choice of over 50 sound effects.

Record and edit your soundtrack.
• Record audio directly into the timeline.
• Adjust the volume of any video clip, song, sound effect, or audio recording.
• Loop music to fill your project.
• On iPad, view detailed audio waveforms for every clip in your project.

Share your HD movie on the web and in your home.
• Publish in HD directly from iMovie to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, and CNN iReport.
• Send to the Camera Roll and share in your MobileMe gallery, in an email, or via MMS on iPhone 4.
• Use AirPlay to stream directly from iMovie to your HDTV with Apple TV (compatible only with second-generation Apple TV; requires iOS 4.3 or later).
• Transfer your iMovie project to your computer and compatible iOS devices.

Note: while iMovie works great on the iPhone 4, the extra real estate offered by the first generation iPad apparently impacted the performance of the app to the point that Apple decided not to release it on the device. You will need the to upgrade to the more powerful iPad 2 to be able to download and use the app.

iMovie costs $4.99, and is available here.

GarageBand

GarageBand turns your iPad into a collection of Touch Instruments and a full-featured recording studio — so you can make music anywhere you go. Use Multi-Touch gestures to play pianos, organs, guitars, drums, and basses on your iPad. They sound and play like their counterparts, but let you do things you could never do on a real instrument. Enjoy a full range of Smart Instruments that make you sound like a pro — even if you've never played a note before. Plug an electric guitar into your iPad and play through classic amps and stompbox effects. Use the built-in microphone or a guitar to record, or capture any performance. Then mix up to eight tracks to create a song you can share.

Play your iPad like a musical instrument.
• Perform on dozens of musical instruments on the innovative Multi-Touch keyboard.
• Tap out beats from the seat of acoustic and electronic drum kits.
• Recreate legendary guitar rigs on your iPad with 9 amps and 10 stompbox effects.
• Record your voice using the built-in microphone, and apply fun sound effects.
• Use the Sampler to create an instrument from sounds you record, then play them on a keyboard.

Sound like a virtuoso with Smart Instruments.
• Tap chords to instantly create keyboard grooves with the Smart Keyboard.
• Strum chords on acoustic and electric Smart Guitars, or trigger fingerpicking patterns for popular chords.
• Groove with an onscreen electric or upright Smart Bass by tapping on chords.
• Drag drum instruments onto a grid to create your own beats with the Smart Drums.

Create a song anywhere you go.
• Arrange and mix your song with up to eight tracks using Touch Instruments, audio recordings, and loops.
• Trim and place musical regions exactly where you want them to play.
• Use the Mixer to fine-tune each track's volume – solo or mute any track, or adjust pan, reverb, and echo.
• Use over 250 professionally prerecorded loops as a backing band to your song.

Share your songs.
• Email songs right from your iPad (AAC).
• Export your song and add it to the iTunes library on your Mac or PC.
• Send a project to your Mac and open it in GarageBand to continue refining your song.

GarageBand is compatible with both iPad 1 & 2, and costs $4.99. The app can be downloaded here.

Available in six colors and flanked by naturally tanned, distressed, brown leather, the Smart Case is a great option for the iPad user looking for protection that comes in a thin package.  See the PadGadget review for more information on our opinion of the iPad version of the Smart Case.

The slender case is available in six color choices.

  • Price: $29

Ultimate SleeveCase

Suede Jacket Sleeve

Like the other sleeves, the Suede Jacket keeps a your iPad looking as good as the day you bought it with a soft interior to prevent scratching.  The nearly indestructible, ballistic nylon shell is lined with superior quality neoprene intended to protect against bumps and bruises during transport from place to place.  An impact-resistant insert provides additional protection for the screen and bottom loop helps users with iPad removal.  Customizable options are available, allowing users to create a design to fit their needs.

In addition to the new options for the iPad 2, WaterField offers two cases that work for both versions of the iPad:  EXO SleeveCase and iPad Wallet.  ”We have re-designed our iPad line creating new custom sizes for the lighter, thinner iPad 2,” explained owner, Gary Waterfield. “The EXO and iPad Wallet remain great choices for carrying the iPad 2 within another case and the iPad 2 with its mobile accessories.”

The EXO SleeveCase

The EXO offers many similar features provided by the Ultimate SleeveCase, but differs in that it is designed to use with an iPad or iPad 2 already inside an Apple or other thin iPad case.  Made from high-grade neoprene and ballistic nylon, this case provide protection in a slim case.

  • Price: $49-54
  • Colors: Black with either lead indium or brown leather trim
  • Options: Simple Shoulder Strap ($9) Suspension Shoulder Strap ($22) or Piggyback: ($25-$27)

The iPad Wallet

This “wallet” is the ultimate grab-and-go case for your iPad 2 and iPad.  Its soft interior, foam lining and impact resistant plastic insert lets users carry their device without worry.  Usable with or without a slim case, iPad owners are able to tote their wireless keyboard and accessories any where they go making this case an all-in-one iPad solution.  Check out our PadGadget Accessory Review for more detailed information.

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:48 AM PST

Verizon has already communicated they’re ready for the iPad 2 launch tomorrow. They will be selling the iPad 2 in their stores when the tablet officially launches.

Both, Verizon and AT&T had already released information about their iPad 2 data plans. Now, AT&T has also confirmed they will join Apple in offering the iPad 2 via online orders that will start at 4AM Eastern.

AT&T plans to keep their iPad 2 plans similar to what they already offer for the first generation iPad. However, the company has now added an option for a subscription plan, just in case you need more data than what their prepaid plan offers.

Verizon, instead, will only sell the iPad 2 at their stores. The company does not plan to offer the new iPad online tomorrow. So, if you want a Verizon iPad 2, you will need to line up at a Verizon retail store tomorrow for the official 5PM launch.

Get ready. The new iPad will be waiting for you online and across many stores.

Watch NCAA March Madness Games for FREE On Your iPad/iPhone

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 06:46 AM PST

March is upon us, and that means the bracket is back. As the basketball college season nears an end, lots of fans get ready to create their famous tournament brackets and start making their bets in their office and amongst friends and family. Fans have lots of decisions to make.

But, as long as you use your iPad or iPhone to follow all the action, Apple’s iOS devices will make sure you don’t forget to fill your bracket, and even more, will let you stream LIVE games video for FREE.

There is a new March Madness On Demand application on the App Store that has quickly become very popular.

March Madness On Demand allows you to watch every game from the NEW First Round on March 15-16 to the Final Four scheduled for April 2-4. You will be able to watch live stream video over WiFi and 3G (provided your network coverage is sufficient).

You can also watch LIVE video of the bracket selection show scheduled for this coming Sunday, March 13. You will have plenty of time to get ready to use your current iPad, or maybe even your brand new iPad 2. In addition, the application comes with a “My Channels” feature that allows you to plug in your zip code and TV provider, and you'll see where each game is on across all four networks – TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV.

I have to say the application features a sleek design. Besides letting you watch LIVE streaming video, the application also allows you to follow your own bracket in real-time, scores, and you can get alerts for your favorite teams, know when games go into overtime, crunch time, and more.

Get ready before all the basketball madness starts next week. This is a great download for basketball fans everywhere. NCAA March Madness On Demand is available now for download FREE of charge.

Where are all the Free iPad 2s?

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 04:03 AM PST

Last year we saw a rush of companies using the iPad to help promote their products, sales campaigns or charities. Now with the iPad 2 only a day away from launch, why are we seeing only a handful of companies giving the iPad 2 away. What's happened?

The answer may be a simple matter of supply and demand.  The iPad was an instant media sensation and the press kicked into overdrive the moment Steve Jobs unveiled his magical tablet. This ensured anything iPad related had a great chance of getting noticed, which made it the perfect contest and promotional giveaway.

Unfortunately for many consumers, Apple wasn’t able to ramp up supply fast enough to satisfy pent up demand.  With the original iPad, customers had to wait over 10 weeks from the time the iPad was announced to the first time customers could actually buy one.  The delay gave customers two months to rationalize why they had to have one of these shinny new gadgets.  Even once the iPad hit store shelves, supply was severely limited and waiting times stretched out several weeks for customers wanting to make a purchase.  This made iPad giveaways even more attractive as they were often one of the only ways users could even find an iPad.

With the new iPad 2 this has all changed.  The iPad 2 was announced only a week ago and will be on sale in less than two weeks after it was unveiled.  Availability shouldn’t be an issue either as Apple has worked the kinks out of its manufacturing and supply chains. Unlike with the original iPad, the iPad 2 will be available through multiple sales channels ensuring customers can easily find a local iPad retailer straight from day one.

The small number of reputable iPad 2 giveaways simply might reflect the new supply and demand.  Now that the iPad 2 will be widely available, media attention has died down and consumers can easily pick one up at their local Target, Best Buy or Walmart store. So when a company is trying to get you to notice their new car, electronics gadget or vacation package the iPad probably won’t have as much draw as it did a year ago.

While iPad promotions might not be at the same frenzied pace we witnessed last year, there are still a few reputable companies out there using Apple's next generation tablet as a clever marketing tool. For example, iPad and iPhone accessory maker PADACS just announced yesterday that they will be giving away two white iPad 2s as part of an effort to "encourage people to sign up to receive special offers and promotions for the company's great range of iPad and iPhone 4 accessories."

Maybe once the iPad 2 is out we’ll see more companies include them in their contests and promotions.  If you’re in the market for a new iPad 2, keep your eyes open for one of the few reputable giveaways out there or you could always save up your shekels and simply buy one, just like the rest of us.
