Around the World in 18 Days for the iPad – A Travel Photo Book

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 11:42 PM PDT

Travel enthusiasts celebrate nine of the most wonderful destinations in the world with three colorful and stunning iPad apps:  Around the World in 18 Days, 48 Hours in Cairo and 48 Hours in Hong Kong.  Experience Hong Kong, Singapore, Cairo, Istanbul, Venice, Zurich, Bruges, London and Paris through the lens of travel photographer and author Andy Davies.

Davies began his journey from his home in Portland, Oregon and traveled to nine countries, toured nine cities, stayed in nine hotels and rode in five trains on his incredible around the world adventure.

Users maneuver their way through hundreds of photos, numerous maps and a host of travel and photography tips by tapping the forward/backward buttons or swiping up and down on each screen.  Jump instantly from place to place by selecting a destination in the table of contents and experience the HDR image galleries and video clips.

I love to travel and look forward to experiencing different cultures when I’m outside the US.  These apps were designed to feature the experiences of Davies journey and not act as comprehensive travel guides.  The photographs highlight popular tourist sites, as well as the day-to-day life of the people who live there.  I enjoyed viewing the wonderful pictures the apps had to offer and liked the fact that different pictures were displayed depending on the direction I was holding my iPad.  With pictures optimized for both the horizontal and vertical orientations, it was like having two great books in one.

If you love to travel and experience cultures from around the world, you’ll find the photos and information in these apps to be intriguing. You can download Around the World in 18 Days from the App Store for $2.99 for a limited time or pick up 48 Hours in Cairo and 48 Hours in Hong Kong for $0.99 each.  Maybe you’ll discover your next summer travel destination!

iPad to Offer Spaces-like Multitasking Interface?

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 05:00 PM PDT

Earlier today, Patently Apple uncovered a new patent application showing that Apple is investigating new ways to handle apps multitasking on the iPad. The patent, named “device, method, and graphical user interface for manipulating workspace views,” shows a completely revamped UI, very similar to the ‘Spaces’ interface available on Macs since OS X 10.5.

If you’ve never heard about Spaces, the feature allows Mac users to create multiple virtual home screens, each designed to run its own set of apps. Users can for instance create and assign a space for entertainment apps, such as QuickTime and VLC, and then switch to another space used to run work-related apps, such as Numbers and Pages. While the feature is not used by all Mac owners, it is extremely popular with users who happen use the same computer at home, and at work.

The patent, filed in late 2009, shows that iPad might eventually offer a new Spaces-like interface, that would allow users to assign apps to specific virtual home screens. Users would be allowed to move apps from one screen to the other, and the new interface would allow users to quickly jump from one screen to the other.

According to the patent application, the feature would be invoked via specific multitasking gestures, the same way iOS 4.3 already offers basic multitasking functions via 4 or 5 fingers gestures.

Note that at this stage, the concept is ‘only’ a patent application filing, and might never make it into the iPad.

Time Warner vs. Content Owners – Which Side Are You On?

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 07:41 AM PDT

“I want my TWCable TV App” is the slogan that has captivated the industry, after Time Warner released their very innovative iPad TV application on March 15.

The FREE TWCable TV app has experienced over 300,000 downloads, turning the iPad TV app into an overnight sensation. But, a major barrier has surfaced in the form of a few content providers, which have simply highlighted their slow adoption of new technologies and distribution methods. Considering Time Warner’s new TV app capabilities and the freedom it brings to consumers inside the home, which side are you on?

The current debate is quite simple. Time Warner released a new iPad TV app that turns your iPad into a TV screen, allowing you to watch selected live cable TV channels in your home using a WiFi connection. The application simply brings the freedom to your home without requiring any wires, new TVs, and no new set-top boxes. Sounds like a good deal, doesn’t it?

Well, you would think so. Enter Fox and Scripps, which are major content owners that view the current iPad application as an unacceptable way to deliver their TV channels. The current debate has resulted in cease-and-desist letters sent to Time Warner by some content providers that have demanded the removal of their channels from the iPad TV app.

Time Warner knows the content business very well, since they are part of the content generation value chain. The company is part of a large conglomerate of businesses that generate TV, music, and movies. Given the current situation, the company has decided not to pull the plug on their innovative iPad TV app. Time Warner has gone as far as opening a dedicated website to inform you about their plans with their iPad TV app, and how they will move forward providing you more freedom around your house.

“We believe we have every right to carry programming on the iPad app.  But, for the time being, we have decided to focus our iPad efforts on other enlightened programmers who understand the benefit and importance of allowing our subscribers – and their viewers – to watch their programming on any screen in their homes.”, said Time Warner on their dedicated website.

Time Warner has listed their new TV lineup on the iPad, which consists of TV channels such as A&E, CNN, ABC Family, Bravo, CNBC, Disney Channel, Travel Channel, USA and many more. The company has clearly stated that they will be providing replacement channels very soon, avoiding any changes or app updates while they include additional channels.

Time Warner has also published some strong statements against content providers that according to the company lack vision.

“In the meantime, we will pursue all of our legal rights against the programmers who don't share our vision.  Your enthusiasm, and the enthusiasm of the programming partners who have embraced the app – rather than those who are solely focused on finding additional ways to reach into wallets of their own viewers – has convinced us more than ever that we are on the right path.”

As the content industry continues to evolve, and believe me it will, all the ecosystem players need to learn how to become more innovative by exploring new business models and distribution methods. So far, the device manufacturers have opened the door to consumers and have provided multiple ways to consume media content. There is no reason for content owners and media companies to avoid the new technological advancements.

Which side are you on? Would like to hear your comments.

Apple Competitors: CEOs Stepping Down one After the Other

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 06:02 AM PDT

Late yesterday, Gianfranco Lanci stepped down from his position as CEO of Acer, a move motivated by the fact that his company has been suffering from lower-than-expected performance, since the end of 2010.

Although Acer tried to jump on the tablet and smartphone bandwagon, thanks to a new line of Android-powered devices, the company’s attempt at taking market share away from Apple has proved to be unsuccessful, and Lanci was eventually sacked by the company’s board members.

This is not the first time a CEO steps down due to the incredible impact of Apple’s products on the marketplace. In the past, LG Electronics’ ex-CEO Nam Yong and Nokia’s ex-CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo were both forced to step down, due to their failure at launching product lines able to compete with the iPad and the iPhone.

Since its introduction in April 2010, the iPad reshaped both notebook and netbook markets, as a slew of shoppers in the market for a new laptop eventually bought an iPad instead. As a result, the iPad literally capped the growth of the low-end computer market, which in turn forced companies like Acer to discontinue some of their models soon after their introduction.

According to Digitimes, Lanci’s resignation is only the first of many more to come. Most brands trying to build products designed to go head-to-head with the iPad haven’t found an effective strategy to gain significant market share, and as a result, Motorola, Sony, Toshiba, Asus and Lenovo’s CEOs could be next.
