Joseph Tame Runs Tokyo Marathon with iPad & iPhone

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 10:08 PM PST

If you weren’t able to secure a spot in the Tokyo marathon this year, you can still experience the race thanks to self-proclaimed techie Joseph Tame.  According to a report from The Telegraph, the Hertfordshire native will run the marathon wearing four iPhones, an iPad, two Android handsets and a weather station.

Tame’s unique creation is currently reporting live video, weather conditions, GPS locations and heart rate every step of the way. He is running the marathon for the Tyler Foundation supporting children with cancer in Japan. (Click to donate.)  You can watch Joseph’s progress live at www.tm2011.com right now (12 AM CST).  He is reporting in both English and Japanese.

We talked to Tame during the race via Twitter and asked him how he was using the iPad.  He responded back to us live via his iRun system and told us the iPad is being used as an electronic billboard with the Banner for iPad app.  Thanks to great technology, Tame is able to share his Twitter stream with other runners in the race.

Running a marathon is hard enough without having several extra pounds of electronics strapped to your body.  You rock Joseph!

Engadget Selects iPad as Top Gadget of 2010

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 09:58 PM PST

Gadget mega site Engadget just released their Editor’s Choice awards for top electronic gadgets in 2010 and Apple’s iPad beat out all other gadgets to take top honors.  The iPad managed to edge out HTC’s popular Evo smartphone to win Engadget’s “Gadget of the Year.”

Engadget editors selected the iPad as the Top Gadget saying, “the iPad won this one going away — there’s just no denying the influence Apple’s tablet had on the industry this year.”  Engadget editors also voted the iPad one of the best “Home Entertainment Devices” of 2010 with it landing in the runner’s-up spot just behind Netflix’s popular video streaming service.

The iPad also was selected “Gadget of the Year” by Engadget readers to win their “Reader’s Choice Award .”  Over 100,000 readers voted and selected their top gadget in a range of categories.   Apple’s iPad took top honors in three different Reader’s Choice categories, winning by a wide margin in each.

The iPad won the People’s Choice Gadget of the Year, beating out the second place Microsoft Kinect by over 20%.  The iPad also took the top spot to win the “Tablet PC of the Year” beating out the Samsung Galaxy Tab by nearly 50% and it won the “Portable Media Device of the Year” award beating out Apple’s iPod Touch 4G by 14%.

The iPad wasn’t the only Apple product to take top honors in Engadget’s 2010 gadget awards.  Apple’s iPhone 4 took the top spot in both the Reader’s Choice and Editor’s Choice poll for 2010 “Phone of the Year”.

Packing Pro for iPad – App Review

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 12:01 PM PST

At PadGadget, some of us travel quite a bit. It doesn’t matter for how long I’ve been doing it, but packing is definitely time consuming and sometimes it can become stressful.

When we travel, the biggest thing is trying to remember about everything we need to pack or buy. My challenge has been that I leave everything until the last minute and sometimes depend too much on little notes that I always manage to lose one way or another. In this review, we take a closer look at Packing Pro, which was chosen as a finalist in the iPad Travel App category of the 2010 Best App Ever competition.

Before deciding to review Packing Pro, I never thought I could use the help of a “Remind Me Everything” type application. But, when I saw that Packing Pro has done quite well in the travel apps category on the iPad and iPhone stores, I decided to take a closer look at it. After all, we like to share with our readers useful applications that could make a difference in their daily lives.

Overall, Packing Pro is more than just a digital packing list. I came to realize the application can really become your personal packing assistant. The application has a very large, customizable catalog with quite a few sample lists that you can use as templates for your endless packing lists.

I liked that Packing Pro gives you full control over the look and feel of the application. You can control different themes, the layout, fonts and colors. The application also offers you a huge Master Catalog with over 800 items and “to-do” tasks, and an Expert packing list wizard that helps you create a customized list. The application also provides full support for landscape and portrait orientations on your mobile iOS devices.

When you start using the application it can quickly become overwhelming. Why? The application has so much useful information, many sample lists, and so many suggestions that you could get a bit anxious on deciding where to start from. But, don’t take this as a negative, it’s simply that the application requires a bit of time from you to collect your thoughts and determine where to focus on.

I’d like to summarize the functionality of this application into four main categories – Packing lists, Sample lists, Templates and the Master Catalog.

The Packing lists are simply the lists that you create with this application. You can create many customized lists for your different types of trips. The application will let you keep track of what’s packed and what’s not by allowing you to use simple check marks. Each item added to your list can also be described with several attributes: number, weight, value, and note. When you create a list, the application allows you to create it from scratch, from a sample list, from one of your previous lists, or with the Expert wizard.

The Sample lists provide examples of typical packing lists that have been provided by the developer. These samples list provide you ideas and suggestions before you decide to create your packing lists.

The Templates are simply a way for you to create your list. As explained above, you can use any of the Sample lists, or any of your own existing lists, as a template to create a new packing list. To me, this is the quickest and easiest way to get started with this application and create that first packing list.

The Master Catalog is huge. Packing Pro includes over 800 items and “to-do” tasks. The application organizes the catalog into a “3-level” tree structure -  Categories, Types, and Items. For example: Gadgets is a category, Photo Equipment is a type inside the Gadgets category, and Digital Camera represents a specific item. The Master Catalog is also 100% customizable, which allows you to add to the categories for later use when creating your packing lists.

Overall, all the items that you would expect to see when packing for your trips are included in this application. Probably more than you could ever imagine. And, if for any reason something seems to be missing, you can simply add it to the Master Catalog and you’ll be ready to roll.

What I liked: This app really becomes your very own personal packing assistant. The Master Catalog database is huge. The application is very flexible and let you customize many things to help you build very good packing lists. The Expert wizard and Sample packing lists certainly make your packing planning experience quite easy.

What I didn’t like: Certainly liked the application. Quite easy to use once you’ve become familiarized with the large amount of information provided by the application. Would like to be able to assign values in the Master Catalog to avoid re-entering the value every time I add something to a packing list.

To buy or not to buy: Packing Pro is more than just a digital packing list, it certainly becomes your personal packing assistant. The Expert wizard, sample packing lists, and the extensive Master Catalog make your packing planning experience definitely much easier. If you travel often, and even if you don’t, this application will help you avoid that last minute “mad dash” to the pharmacy or super market. Very good download for your iPad.
