Watching streaming video on the is an awesome way to take in a move or TV show. Now with the Crackle – Movies & TV iPad entertainment you can watch high quality movies and TV shows for free. Crackle, Inc, developers of this application have created a very nice “no cost” streaming video application with quality content. While this is limited to mostly older movie titles and not the most popular TV show series, the content is still quality enough to get you hooked. While testing this application I found it to be very responsive in terms of speed while using a WiFi connect as well as 3G. A few drawbacks for this app are the lack of overall content and the application is not yet available worldwide. While Crackle – Movies & TV is not as jam packed with content as say Netflix or other subscription based streaming vide it is a fantastic free streaming video alternative. Another bright spot for this app is it appears . continues to bring new content to the Crackle – Movies & TV app so check back in a month or two and you will most likely find more titles. Puzzle games for the iPhone are one of the largest genera’s in the App Store. Melon Truck is a new iPhone puzzle game that is more challenging than most and in a good way. The object of is to shoot watermelons out of a truck using the correct angle and speed to land the melon into specific point buckets. This would appear to be over easy, but there are some requirements that make passing each level rather difficult. There are negative point buckets as well as negative point power ups that get in your way of scoring 1600 points (required to pass each level). Users get only 3 melons each level to get the 1600 points to complete a level and move on. The developer taunts users to try to complete all levels with 3000 points (max possible) and if done this will unlock secret levels. I found when I used the angle and speed instead of blindly shooting I did much better, fun game! Watch the for a demonstration of this application. CM

But, has several twists that make this new iPad game title stand out from the classic Centipede game play. Hummingz EVO HD has power-ups and points that come from catching dead enemies. While psychologically catching the dead enemies take some getting used to, it is the fastest way to score big points and get additional shooters. Another huge difference and I mean huge are the boss battles. The bosses in this game are giant frogs, spiders, and the like. They spit little like enemies of the particular boss you are fighting and they throw mushrooms as well. The graphics in this came are vibrant and the game played fast with no lag or slow time. The 2011 IGERT.org poster competition showcasing the interdisciplinary research of 135 emerging scientists is taking place online May 3rd-6th. Fifty faculty judges from universities around the country will score posters and audio presentations and select 20 finalists. Members of the IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) community will select an additional four finalists through online community choice voting. All finalists will present their research and participate in a day of career advancement at the National Science Foundation on May 25th in Washington DC. The finalists will be announced on May 6th. The competition is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and facilitated by IGERT.org — a project run by TERC, a nonprofit education research and development organization.

The public can view the posters at IGERT.org/posters2011 and get a glimpse at how these early career scientists and engineers are addressing complex research problems of significant scientific and societal importance. Topics span chemistry, biology, engineering, nanotechnology, geoscience, economics, energy, the social sciences and more. For example, there are posters that address research on malaria, photovoltaics, brain function, and genomes.

"Creating this online poster competition platform has allowed us to think about innovative ways to enrich traditional poster sessions," says IGERT.org Principal Investigator Joni Falk. "We had several goals in mind when designing it. We wanted to facilitate a rich scientific dialogue between judges and presenters and between members of the IGERT community. We also knew that the online format could enable broader participation among IGERT graduate students and faculty. Last, we wanted to provide the members of the public, industry, and potential employers with an online venue to learn about these emerging scholars and their research. I am very pleased that in the first day of the competition, more than 600 IGERT members and over 3,000 unique visitors have taken part."

The platform designed and facilitated at TERC allows the public to both view the posters and hear the presenter describe their research. Visitors to the site can search by keyword, state, and research institution. Members of the IGERT community, including graduate students, faculty, project coordinators, and related NSF staff, see a customized view that allows them to easily interact with each other — providing comments, sending queries, participating in live chat, and voting for posters that are most meritorious. Customized activity feeds alert judges, members, and presenters when relevant new content is posted and enables them to track their activity throughout the competition. The dialogue to date has reflected deep engagement, inquiry, and reflection by members of the community.

"Over the last eighteen months, we have been gradually migrating many of our components to take advantage of what virtualization has to offer," said Gary Torgersen, DSi vice president of operations & technology. "We are now using 60 virtual servers instead of 60 power-eating, heat-generating machines. This not only lowers our energy cost, it also drastically reduces our hardware and software expenses. These savings are passed on to our clients."

Virtualization means that a single physical server can run multiple virtual operating systems performing the work of multiple servers. Servers purchased by DSi over the past year and a half were purchased with virtualization in mind. These servers were designed and built by Dell specifically for virtualization – utilizing less power, creating less heat and lowering demand for additional cooling.

"As we do with any technology we implement, we researched many options and vendors before we proceeded with VMware and Dell for our virtualization needs," said Torgersen. "We then tested the waters with one server before gradually increasing our virtual capacity. VMware's process and Dell's equipment surpassed our expectations, affording us a higher level of productivity, improved agility and enhanced security, all while decreasing our overall energy costs and carbon footprint."

VMware is the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure solutions. The company's Green IT Calculator estimates that DSi's environmental impact as a result of implementing VMware vSphere is equivalent to planting 1,200 trees.

The latest real estate market analysis from Altos Research shows an increase in median prices and housing inventory, and predicts the trend will continue into the summer months. “We’re seeing the seasonal shift we always see this time of year,” says Altos Research CEO Mike Simonsen. “Sellers are entering the market to take advantage of the larger pool of buyers, and we also have demand being fueled by low interest rates and comparatively low prices.”

Noteworthy real estate trends in April:

Austin, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. all showed double-digit inventory increases, with Boston posting the biggest increase at 19.18% month-over-month.

Las Vegas and New York were the only markets showing a decrease in inventory, and the decreases were modest (-1.05% and -0.26%, respectively).

The leaders in the price increase category were in “Sunshine States” – San Francisco (4.87%), San Jose (4.32%), Phoenix (3.30%), Denver (3.23%), and DC (3.04%). California markets commonly experience more volatility due to a chronic shortage of housing units.

The 7-day and 90-day averages are both trending upwards for median prices and inventory. The 7-day trends are the first indication of a shifting market and have been trending upwards for several months.

FairCom Corporation announced a new solution for COBOL environments, c-treeACE for COBOL, at The Business and Technology of Low-Latency Trading conference in New York this week. This new technology exposes previously inaccessible silos of COBOL data to open access methods.

COBOL was one of the earliest high-level programming languages and is sometimes referred to as the language that automated business. It is still responsible for many of the mission-critical transactions supported by financial institutions worldwide. Recent studies show there are roughly 1.5 to 2 million active COBOL developers writing about 5 billion new lines of COBOL code every year. These estimates show COBOL applications processing 200 times more transactions per day than Google searches.

The nature of COBOL data and record definitions do not fit well in the traditional relational (SQL-based) database paradigm of strict table and record definitions. Consequently COBOL developers in recent years working on intra- and internet-based solutions have been forced to rewrite applications and to sacrifice performance and functionality, often at significant financial costs.

According to Francesco Cortinovis, Managing Director of FairCom Europe, "FairCom's c-treeACE for COBOL provides a unique and robust SQL access paradigm that marries COBOL standard I/O routines and SQL. FairCom's unique approach provides simultaneous, efficient access to data and record definitions without imposing limitations on the existing COBOL application."

Cortinovis explains, "By design, a COBOL runtime will interface with any file system that stores and retrieves record buffers, using any indexes that may exist over these record buffers. That’s exactly what FairCom's c-treeACE ISAM interface does. So it was natural to implement the required COBOL-specific interfaces and give COBOL access to c-tree. FairCom has several significant COBOL-based customers in Europe and we worked closely with their engineers to implement and test this technology."

FairCom interfaces with ACUCOBOL-GT and ExtFH using an ISAM technique that fits the standard COBOL approach to indexed files without the complications of a SQL table remapping. "From the pure COBOL point of view, c-treeACE for COBOL is just a straight, more advanced 'native COBOL' file system, with no limitations imposed on the COBOL programmer," according to Evaldo Oliveira, FairCom's General Manager.

Olivera continues, "FairCom's unique technology enables COBOL applications to access their native ISAM data. Other applications that are more relational-oriented, such as business intelligence, data warehouse or enterprise data stores, may get the same data using a SQL-oriented approach, with a resulting performance hit. Taking advantage of c-tree's native ISAM access opens a 'data gateway' for COBOL applications that cannot be found elsewhere today."

"Over the past few years FairCom has experienced greatly increased use in the financial sector, and we have already received significant interest in this new technology both in the U.S. and in Brazil," Oliveira noted.

The advantage FairCom's design has is that, for the COBOL application, the data access architecture remains essentially unchanged. While the c-treeACE SQL engine must perform conversions on data access, FairCom's optimizer keeps the number of conversions quite low. The data itself is rarely converted, while most of the translations happen between the SQL commands into the ISAM formats. Further, the simple data conversion FairCom applies is far more straightforward and efficient than the alternate approach of remapping COBOL tables into SQL tables, as it preserves the native ISAM data – one of the strongest performance features of I/O in COBOL applications.

Existing applications will work with c-treeACE for COBOL without the need to recompile and developers can choose which file system to use on a file-by-file basis. Additionally c-treeACE for COBOL transparently allows access to data used by the COBOL application with direct SQL access or other FairCom interfaces like ODBC, JDBC, and ADO.NET drivers.

This new technology allows all COBOL applications to run with FairCom's proven client/server technology across multiple platforms from Windows to Linux, Mac and others. "This driver has been used in Europe since 1998 and tested in sophisticated deployments on virtual machines," Cortinovis said. "Using the FairCom c-tree Server as a default database offers unparalleled strength and stability to the application by providing a clean, multithreaded, cross platform engine with full transaction processing," Cortinovis elaborated.

The National Association for Proton Therapy (NAPT) today announced three new supporting member sites including Mayo Clinic proton beam therapy program under development in Rochester, Minn. and Phoenix; and the McLaren Proton Therapy Center, currently under construction in Flint, Mich. Today's announcement brings to seven the total number of proton sites now in planning or under construction in the U.S. Nine centers are fully operational.

"NAPT is pleased to welcome Mayo Clinic and McLaren Health into our small, but growing community of proton therapy centers. We look forward to the day when more cancer patients will have greater access to the best available radiation treatment that will reduce morbidity and side effects and optimize patients' quality of life ," said Leonard Arzt, executive director of NAPT.

Mayo Clinic will utilize proton therapy in the form known as intensity modulation, or IMPT in the form of pencil beam scanning in eight treatment rooms at the two locations. The centers plan to treat patients as early as 2015 with a focus on cancers of the head and neck, breast, lung, spine, prostate, eye, stomach and pediatric cancers.

The three-room, 35,000 sq. ft. McLaren facility will use IMPT as soon as 2012 at McLaren's Great Lakes Cancer Institute. The treatment delivery system will also use robotic table positioning. McLaren has partnered with ProTom International, a Texas-based health care technology company using the Radiance 330 system. It will be the first proton center in Michigan. "We are very excited to bring this life-saving technology to our patients," said Philip A. Incarnati, president of McLaren Health Care.

Proton beam therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy used in cancer treatment. It is available at nine operating centers with at least seven additional facilities in the planning and construction phase. A National Swimming Pool Management Company is looking to hire more than 2,400 lifeguards this summer to work at swimming pools across the east coast. Training is available and the company is also giving away over $65,000 in cash and prizes.
