Samsung portrait QWERTY Android for Sprint spotted again

Posted:

Remember that Samsung-made portrait QWERTY Android device for Sprint that was very DROID Pro-ish? Well, it's back again, and this time we're actually getting a look at the entire device. There's not a ton of new information to glean from the photo, but this handset does appear to differ from Motorola's offering in a few different ways: it's got what looks like physical home, search, back, and menu keys; the device's keys are shaped differently; and it could be running a vanilla version of...

BlackBerry Touch poses for some photos in the wild

Posted:

When it rains, it pours, right? After going through a bit of a drought on BlackBerry smartphone news, we heard some details on BlackBerry 6.1 and 7 last night and today new photos of the BlackBerry Touch have emerged. The folks over at BGR spent some hands-on time with the BlackBerry Touch, which is also known as the Bold Touch, Monaco (Verizon), Monza (GSM), and Storm 3. It's unlikely that this device will actually come to market with the Storm moniker, though, which is good news for those of...

Is Google taking the fight against fragmentation too far?

Posted:

Fragmentation was a word that not many people talked about before Android came along. Even while there were other mobile operating systems, namely Windows Mobile, that were dealing with the same issue around the launch of Android (and quite a bit beforehand), it didn’t become a mainstream issue with a household-like reoccurrence until Android started to take off. And now that Android is well off the ground, the fragmentation issue is a problem for many Android-powered handset...

HTC planning to show us what's next on April 12th

Posted:

If you're an HTC fan, you may want to keep your calendar open on April 12th. HTC just sent out invites for an event in London on Tuesday, April 12th, at 8:30 AM ET and, while there's no indication as to what the Taiwanese firm has in store, there's already plenty of speculation on the subject. As some have pointed out, HTC's gathering just so happens to take place at the same time as Microsoft's 2011 MIX developer conference, so Windows Phone 7 is a possibility. There's also the chance...

HTC Merge gets its own version of VZ Navigator in the Android Market

Posted:

Although the HTC Merge seems tailor-made for Verizon with its red accents, so far we've only seen the device land on carriers Alltel and Cellular South. Now a couple of apps have given us hope that we may finally, finally see the Merge hit Verizon's shelves. First up, a Merge-specific version of VZ Navigator is now available for download in the Market, which you can find right here. If that's not enough, the Merge also appears on the list of devices getting support for Verizon's own Indycar app...

Google working to fight Android fragmentation by controlling tweaks made to the OS?

Posted:

Android has always been known as the open mobile platform, but a new report claims that Google may be making things slightly less so for anyone looking to get in on the fun. According to reports from around a dozen execs at "key companies in the Android ecosystem" like LG and Samsung, Google is working to lessen the amount of customizations made to its software and forcing manufacturers to get their plans approved by Andy Rubin if they want early access to fresh Android builds. ...

RIM merging BlackBerry 6.1 and QNX to form BlackBerry 7?

Posted:

RIM will be launching the BlackBerry PlayBook and its QNX-powered operating system next month, but outside of a statement from a RIM exec claiming that QNX will eventually replace the BlackBerry OS on smartphones, there hasn't been much indication as to what RIM plans to do when it comes time to bring QNX to its handsets. Today more news on the company's future OS plans has come to light, though, courtesy of the folks at BerryReview. According to some notes passed to them from a developer...

Windows Phone Mobile Studio would be a great addition

Posted:

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is a mobile operating system that, until you use it for a little while, may not seem like it stands a chance against the current competition. Even if the IDC thinks Windows Phone 7 will take some huge leaps in market share , as it stands right now there aren’t many people in the wild who would say that WP7 is the next major operating system to beat. But, use the OS for any amount of time, and more than likely you’ll see why the word...

HTC Arrive Review by Aaron

Posted:

During CTIA’s fall meeting in San Francisco last year, I enjoyed some early hands-on time with the HTC 7 Pro.  With a full physical QWERTY keyboard, fast Snapdragon processor, and new mobile operating system, it sounded like a great device.  Fast forward to March of 2011, and the 7 Pro has made its grand debut on Sprint as the HTC Arrive.  Overall, it’s a nice smartphone with quite a few features, but can it compete given its lack of 4G and $199.99 price tag? ...
