New space tourism data and research meets expanding interest in personal space travel

Space projects and organisations such as Excalibur, Galactic Suite, Bigelow's Space Complex Alpha and Russian Orbital Technologies plans have created increasing interest in orbital space tourism, and with that, a need for new data and research.

The International Institute of Space Commerce (IISC) has responded to industry need and released its findings in a new study titled "Orbital Space Tourism Market Revisited 2011".

In recent years excellent research has focused on suborbital demand, but few detailed studies have been available on actual market demand for orbital personal spaceflight. Additionally, the considerable change in the financial landscape since 2008 highlighted the need for up-to-date data on the demand for personal space travel, given the impact on wealthy individuals and cash availability for space tourism.

IISC in close cooperation with ISU therefore initiated a new study which was based upon previous evaluations with fitting amendment factors as considered relevant.

"I very much welcome this report on Orbital Space Tourism Demand. With the fast moving developments in this sector, this report will be essential reading for anyone with an interest or an involvement in this area" commented Alex Downie OBE, MLC, Member of the Isle of Man Department of Economic Development with delegated Ministerial responsibility for Space Commerce.

The study evaluates the price elasticity in a price range of 5 – 20 million$ per flight and considered the potential market for the period 2012-2022. In terms of such price elasticity, a considerable effect was noted in particular in the zone between 15 and 10 million$ in terms of potential customers.

Merchant360 Releases NFC Stack for Payment Terminals and VeriFone Acquires First License

Medford, OR, May 05, 2011 –(PR.com)– Merchant360, the leading Point of Sale (POS) application developer specializing in Near Field Communication (NFC) and mobile contactless integration, announces the release of its NFC Stack for Payment Terminals and first customer, VeriFone.

Currently POS Terminals with contactless scheme (Visa Paywave, MasterCard PayPass, Amercian Express ExpressPay, Chase Blink, and Discover Zip) payment solutions do not allow for easy and inexpensive integration of non-traditional applications like Bling Nation and MoneyCell to reside and share the contactless reader. Merchant360’s new NFC stack allows for the sharing of the integrated contactless reader between multiple applications on a terminal and the dynamic clearing of NFC messages directed at specific applications.

Non-Scheme payment, loyalty, coupon, and ticketing or value-add solution providers have long been kept from residing on multi-application contactless terminals by lockdowns and high costs. MoneyCell had to pay very high fees to get its mobile tags encoded with a proprietary financial format keeping them from distributing NFC tags as freely as they would have liked. Other programs chose to use their own formats but this makes it difficult for the application to cohabitate with scheme payment solution terminals and requires the program manager or retailer to bear additional and unnecessary costs. Merchant360 believes that retailers who own their equipment should have open choice of applications that reside on their devices and therefore was driven to develop the NFC Stack solution.

“We’ve released several NFC solution integrations at the point of sale now and clients like Bling Nation and MoneyCell were continually met with high costs and incompatibility issues so we designed and delivered a solution for our clients that VeriFone sees merit in it,” said Steve McRae, CEO of Merchant360.

VeriFone has licensed Merchant360s Payment Terminal NFC stack and took delivery this week.

New non-scheme solutions can still take advantage of the high security within the VeriFone payment solutions without licensing financial formats that may not even support all that’s needed. With standard NFC message formats still undefined for things like check-in service, coupon distribution and redemption, and customized receipt delivery the current implementations must maintain flexibility while still adhering to strong brand and security requirements. The solution from Merchant360 allows for remote updating of the device when new NFC applications and formats are released allowing for retailer and ultimately more consumer choice.

M360 is in talks with other hardware manufacturers about integrating its NFC stack and is working with programs who want to integrate to POS solutions now.

According to a study conducted by the Chief Customer Officer Council, the first peer-led advisory group for Chief Customer Officers(CCO's), 67% of companies who implemented and kept a CCO for at least two years saw an increase in revenue while those who let their CCO go saw a decline.

Curtis Bingham, Founder and Executive Director of CCO Council, believes that a CCO is essential to an organization for more than just direct revenue reasons. "The CCO," Bingham says "is a way for organizations to get back in touch with their customers on a more personal level, and with the advent of social media and immediate, constant customer interaction, the cycle back to that sort of communication is not surprising."

Bingham also found that the most effective CCO's are those who report directly to the CEO. The reason why it is so fragile is because often he or she does not report directly to the CEO. As soon as the company hits a revenue road bump they cut costs. In addition, the growth rate of CCO's since 2000 was about 41% and was very strong before the recession. The biggest growth took place in 2007 and started to taper in 2008, 2009 and a huge drop in 2010. Many CCO's are viewed as a cost, and companies don't know how to do anything during a recession other than manage costs.

New Products Bring 'Counter'-Balance to Hospitality Establishments

Countertop devices allow restaurant and bar owners to maximize revenue while accommodating all customers

A new product line is bringing smart solutions to the restaurant and hospitality industry. Designed by engineers at Counterbalance Corporation, the Serv-A-SYST, Lift-A-SYST and Counter-A-SYST each address separate needs that architects and builders have pondered over for many years.

Serv-A-SYST

Counterbalance Corporations newest device, the Serv-A-SYST counterbalance, is designed to control the movement of almost any countertop, from the height of a traditional bar top to one that accommodates the needs of guests with disabilities, and back again.

"Accommodation is no longer a design option, it is a requirement by law," said Joe Avotins, AIA, former Director of Design for both Houston's Restaurants, (now Hillstone Restaurant Group), and McCormick and Schmick's. "While there are other solutions to meet requirements for a lowered portion of counter at your bar, none are as innovative and easy to use as the Serv-A-SYST."

With the Serv-A-SYST installed, a 60" wide portion of the counter can effortlessly move between a high-top and low-top position, (in an arc, vertically 9 -1/2 inches and horizontally 11 inches). The range of motion has been specifically designed to provide the proper height and projection needed to accommodate wheel chair access at any high-top service counter, and meets the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design.

The Serv-A-SYST counterbalance will be available for purchase after the unveiling at the Las Vegas Hospitality Design Expo in May 2011.

Lift-A-SYST

Considered particularly unpopular with restaurant and hotel owners, countertop doors, or "flip-up" counters, have been consistently removed or "designed out" of most hospitality establishments over the last decade, until now.

The Lift-A-SYST counterbalance is available in six different sizes to accommodate different countertop door spans and weights. The counterbalance can accommodate ranges between 21 and 39 inches, and weights from 22 to 72 pounds. The Lift-A-SYST counterbalance was created for ease of use and installation, hence the do-it-yourself installation kit that comes with your purchase.

"The Lift-A-SYST counterbalance offsets the weight of the countertop door. The door goes where you move it and stays there," said Lou Mintzer, Vice president of Sales and Marketing at CounterBalance Corporation. "Before, the countertop door would actually fall down, which can be very scary when the door weighs 60 or 70 pounds. The great thing about the Lift-A-SYST is that it can be added to already functioning countertop doors. It only takes about an hour to install and have it properly functioning. It's a simple process, and definitely worth the investment. The Lift-A-SYST gives bartenders and wait staff the option of using prime workspace in the restaurant or bar."

The Lift-A-SYST has recently been installed in several commercial locations including a Philly Pretzel fast food restaurant in Exton, PA.

Counter-A-SYST

CounterBalance Corporation also offers a custom product line for "flip-up" countertop doors called the Counter-A-SYST® counterbalance. Similar to the Lift-A-SYST, the Counter-A-SYST offsets the weight of the countertop door and allows easy movement by the operator.

"The Counter-A-SYST is recommended if you have a custom design in mind or your countertop door size or weight cannot be accommodated with one of the six standard sizes offered through the Lift-A-SYST program," said Mintzer.

Custom units of the Counter-A-SYST counterbalance are installed in various locations, including five in the Las Vegas CityCenter, one in the Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, one in Paciugo Cafe & Gelato at Cleveland International Airport, one in Chicago Marriott Suites O’Hare and four in private homes throughout California and Colorado.

Counterbalance Technology

As with all of CounterBalance Corporations products, each device works by using patented torsion spring hinge technology. At the heart of the counterbalance, flexible rods store mechanical energy when twisted, and release the energy when returned to their neutral position. As the countertop is moved in an upwards or downwards motion, the energy stored in the system is applied to precisely offset the weight of the counter. The effect is to neutralize the weight of the countertop making it virtually weightless while in motion. This means easy and safe operation for the user.
