Motor Racing Gets a Trailer-Lift

Hewitt, NJ, May 06, 2011 –(PR.com)– The Good Rats will perform at Joey’s Casa Italiana in Hewitt, NJ on May 14, 2011 featuring dinner and a live show with the original founder and member Peppi Marchello.

Formed in 1964, the original group consisted of 5 students from St. John’s University…Ted Haenlein, Frank Stapleton, Eric Crane, Denny Ryan and Peppi Marchello. While playing at a club in Queens, New York a record company executive heard them and eventually signed the band. The band continued to play top 40 covers while working on their own original music.

Although The Good Rats changed their "lineup" a few times since1964 they released their first album in 1969, self-titled The Good Rats. In 1974, the Good Rats released their best-known and most popular album, Tasty. It featured a blend of hard rock and blues, highlighted by Marchello’s raspy vocals. Various songs from this record, including “Injun Joe,” “Papa Poppa,” a rock ode about cults, the autobiographical numbers “Back to My Music,” and “The Songwriter,” and the blues title track, received airplay around the country on FM radio. "Tasty" was a pop song about the talented musicians who Peppi fired from the band.

The Good Rats performed at venues such as Madison Square Garden, The Philadelphia Spectrum, The Nassau Coliseum, The Hammersmith Odeon in England, and New York’s Central Park, as well as showcase rooms such as The Bottom Line in Manhattan, My Father’s Place in Roslyn, NY, Whiskey a Go Go in Los Angeles and The Paradise Room in Boston. They headlined or opened for bands such as Rush, Journey, Kiss, Meat Loaf, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, The Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, and Styx. Live shows were famous for the band’s stage antics, as Peppi would play air guitar on his baseball bat, throw rubber rats into the crowd, and beat the daylights out of a battered garbage can as he sang.

Between 1976 and 1980, The Good Rats released a series of albums, including Ratcity in Blue, From Rats to Riches, Birth Comes to Us All, and Live At Last, all of which were well received by the band’s fan base, and received some airplay on FM radio, without actually putting the band over the top.

Throughout the 1980s, Peppi Marchello continued to write and produce recordings with his son Gene. They toured locally for a while under the name "Popzarocca" until the song "First Love" became a minor hit for the band (now renamed "Marchello"), with the music video receiving minor airplay on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball.

In the mid-1990s, Marchello and sons Gene Marchello and Stefan Marchello began playing out locally under “The Good Rats” name. They released three new studio CDs with this lineup, Tasty Seconds (1996), Let’s Have Another Beer (2000), and Play Dum (2002). Marchello also released a live recording of a 1979 appearance on a Rochester radio show, Rats, The Way You Like ’Em.

In 1998, Marchello wrote "A Tale of Two Balls," the introduction to the book Conflicts of Disinterest (Aardwolf Publishing) by sometimes controversial author Clifford Meth.

They were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (www.limusichalloffame.org) in 2008.

In July, 2009, Peppi Marchello cut a series of three commercials for the car donation organization Kars4Kids.

Peppi Marchello is quoted prominently in the IDW Publishing graphic novel Snaked by Clifford Meth and has been the subject of other stories by the author.

The band continues to play in local venues throughout New York, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as playing annually in their own summer weekend outdoor festival aptly named "Ratstock." They play regularly, every month, at Joey’s Casa Italiana in Hewitt, NJ.

Sugden will oversee all business aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services at Ocean Sky's 46,000-square foot Luton facility. A sister operation to Ocean Sky's engineering base at Manchester airport, the Luton facility provides authorised maintenance services for the full range of Bombardier business jets and supports aircraft from other manufacturers, including Dassault.

Since acquiring the Luton hangar from airline Monarch in May 2010, Ocean Sky has seen its total engineering revenues grow by 20%. The group is forecasting engineering revenues to grow by a further 60% in the next 12 months.

We have a fully-functioning engineering facility and a team of highly-qualified engineers: my role will be to ensure maximum utilisation of resources and to grow the business."

The new CD “Witnessing Time” has an abstract painting on the front in memory of Mauthausen and a cover song of the same name. The painting was done by the internationally recognized  LA Artist Robert Maja (robertmaja.com) and all of the songs were written and performed by Fermionic with music backup produced in part by collaborating anonymous local musicians, singers and producers.

The first song now in pre release is a tribute to the Spanish prisoners interned by the Nazis for Franco after the Spanish Civil War in the Mauthausen (Gusen) concentration camp. Simon Wiesenthal and thousands more were interned there along with about 30 thousand Spanish prisoners. This camp was liberated on May 6,1945 so the release date is a marker for that historic event. Also the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day is celebrated on Sunday. One of the downloads is the title song-"Witnessing Time". Ricky Fermin wanted to keep the memory of the Holocaust fresh in the minds of all Spanish speaking people by writing and performing this song. From this haunting song the album moves through a series of upbeat works strongly ranging from loves songs  to ballads of Hollywood movie making, an excellent instructional piece on stock market investing and several very danceable, fun-very positive and unique songs rounding out the diversified selection. The images on the video were gruesome: grown men beating newborn dairy calves with pickaxes and claw hammers. "After 20 seconds of video, I had to turn it off," says Dr. Jim Humphries, President of the Veterinary News Network (VNN). "I was sickened by what I saw and felt anger and disgust towards the individuals and the company that allowed this cruelty to happen."

Dr. Humphries is referring to an undercover video released by Mercy for Animals after a two week long clandestine operation at the E6 Cattle Company in Hart, Texas. "I have been a veterinarian for 35 years and this video in no way represents the vast majority of good livestock producers in this county. Remember this is animal abuse and cruelty, and should not be confused with the humane production practices we see on the majority of farms today. But in a case this egregious, the spotlight of media, public condemnation and enforcement of the law will help move the industry to real solutions."

Dr. Bernard Rollin, Distinguished Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University said, "This incident is one of the worst I have ever seen in 35 years animal work. Whereas many abuse situations involve ignorance or greed, this case demonstrates genuine sadistic heartless cruelty. We must show the world that such behavior cannot be excused or tolerated and provide practical solutions."

And positive solutions, in the form of excellent training programs, now exist – but they must be taken seriously and more universally used.

Dr. Daniel Thomson, a highly respected expert in production animal medicine at Kansas State University has the solution, "Beef producers and veterinarians work tirelessly as a team to provide humane care for cattle across the United States. The American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP), working with veterinary and animal science experts, have created and published humane euthanasia guidelines that expressly forbid bludgeoning as a form of euthanasia for calves." Dr. Thomson adds, "The utilization of the AABP guidelines, plus training, on-farm or on-line, could have stopped this abuse from happening."

The economy plays a part in this issue as well. As profits slide, some producers have chosen to shortcut good animal welfare procedures and even completely remove the veterinarian from the operation. The sheriff for Castro County, where the E6 calf ranch is located, has reported to the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) that E6 did not have a veterinarian on site.

Production animal agriculture in the United States fills the huge demand for plentiful, healthy and safe animal protein. Producers, working with Doctors of Veterinary Medicine, provide important supplies of meat, eggs and dairy products for the world. The veterinarian must be a part of that production and also an essential part of the training for managers and workers so both safety and humane care are ensured.

With more than 96% of the US population eating meat and dairy products routinely, there is a strong demand. In the case of sick or "down" animals, expert and compassionate euthanasia guidelines are in place to insure the most humane death possible. "Make no mistake, this is not about vegetarianism," says Humphries, "and it should not be about fund-raising for national groups who want to remove animals from our lives. It's about the humane and compassionate management of production animals."

Eleanor Green is the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. Dean Green says; "Texas has a long, rich history in animal agriculture. Veterinarians and cattle producers work hand-in-hand to ensure compassionate care and healthy animals. This isolated incident is not representative of the care these animals receive. It does highlight the importance of thriving partnerships between veterinarians and producers in the entire spectrum of animal care and welfare."

"When a farmer or rancher takes the time to educate himself and his production team, he is showing a great deal of responsibility," says Dr. Dan Posey, Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine. "This, in turn has a positive impact on the care of his animals as well as the health of his business." Dr. Posey added, "livestock producers who have taken the necessary steps to understand proper animal handling and care deeply value their partnerships with veterinarians. They know that an on-going relationship is critical for the humane treatment of all their animals. The veterinarian can then fulfill his or her role as the guardian of the animal's health and welfare."

This ranch either failed in properly training their employees in animal care techniques or management simply looked away. It is time for existing animal welfare programs to be used fully and in turn provide animal workers with essential, bi-lingual information for the proper care of livestock. Examples include the Animal Care Training system through the Beef Cattle Institute at Kansas State University (http://www.AnimalCareTraining.org) and farm level welfare assessment tools such as the National Dairy's Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) program (http://www.NationalDairyFarm.com) and the Beef Quality Assurance Feedlot Self-Assessment tools (http://www.BQA.org).

While condemnations and references to animal welfare guidelines are a common reaction to such cases, the real-world solution is the veterinary relationship and proper training. If voluntary training is not adequate, then perhaps it is time to consider implementing compulsory education and training.

"Our research at the Kauffman Foundation shows that not only are jobs created by new companies, but that the average age of a successful entrepreneur is around 40. Economy Map simultaneously displays the impacts of all 480 major industry sectors in the United States economy from three perspectives: direct impacts (generated by each sector); intermediate (direct and upstream) impacts; and final consumption impacts (in response to consumer or government demand). These perspectives help users to identify which sectors may be candidates for regulation, voluntary partnerships, or green purchasing approaches.

"I started with a simple question," said Economy Map's creator, Jason Pearson. "What knowledge and power would we gain if we could see the whole US economy and its environmental impacts, all at once? Now, it is now possible for anyone to make sense of the entire economy and its impacts. Economy Map 2.0 displays the entire economy in one of three visual formats: as a network of flows, as a grid of sectors, and as a series of bar graphs showing the top 20 sectors contributing to different environmental and human health impacts. In each view, it is possible to see, at a glance, which sectors are responsible for the most direct or indirect impacts. Some sectors, like power generation and agriculture, are the most significant direct contributors to a range of impacts, from global warming to human health to ocean acidification. Other sectors, like apparel and restaurants, are the most significant indirect causes of these same impacts.

The new version of Economy Map builds on an earlier beta version that was launched in December, 2010. It uses data from the widely respected Comprehensive Environmental Database Archive (CEDA), based on public information collected by the US Department of Commerce, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and other government sources. Economy Map is a research project initiated by TRUTHstudio in the public interest.

About the Author

Peter Carroll has written several short stories, poems and many articles on variable subjects for newspapers and Magazines, his favorite subject being history. Queen of Misfortune is his first novel, a fiction piece which involved intensive research and took three years to complete. Born in Barnet, England in July 1933 and with a standard education, he was called up into the RAF in 1951 and served five years as a medic. Since then, until his retirement, he has mainly been involved in accounting and running his own business with his son. Like a cat with nine lives he has survived an air crash, a lift fall and a serious aortic aneurysm and thanks his Karma faith for that. He now lives in beautiful Torbay in South Devon, has been married to to his wife Daphne for over fifty years, and they have two children and four grandchildren.

I had the distinct privilege, besides the author and his editor, to be the first to read "Queen of Misfortune," and I have to admit I was not prepared for the deep emotions that came with reading Peter Carroll's novel. Not only is Carroll's excellent writing style absolutely captivating, but he also manages to convey with ease the intense feelings of love, joy, pain, and grief.

As the sub-title ("Life is but a rehearsal for our everlasting love, my dear Lady Jane Grey") indicates, "Queen of Misfortune" is not merely a Lady Jane Grey Novel; it is a story of true and unconditional love with almost Shakespearean dimensions. "Romeo and Juliet" comes to mind.

There is little recorded history of Lady Jane Grey who, against her will, was declared Queen of England for a short nine days. After all, she was executed at the very young age of sixteen as ordered by Queen Mary I, also known as "Bloody Mary." It also appears that records of her life such as pictures and letters were methodically destroyed shortly after her death. All portraits of her, available these days, were painted decades and centuries after her demise.

More is known about her beloved tutor, John Aylmer, who studied at Queen’s College in Cambridge and in 1549 became tutor to the 12-year old Lady Jane Grey. She found in him the opposite to her strict and abusive parents. He, some say, fell in love with her. In 1576, long after Jane's death, he was consecrated Bishop of London, and while in that position he made himself notorious through his harsh treatment of Roman Catholics. The question comes to mind whether or not his actions were meant as a revenge for Jane's death. Queen Mary I was Catholic and she offered to spare Jane's life if Jane had converted to Catholicism, which, ultimately, she denied.

I can say with all honesty that "Queen of Misfortune" deserves more than the five stars used in online bookstore rating systems. Reading it was experience I will not forget for a long time to come.

The Fort Peck Dam was built during the Great Depression using New Deal funds and thousands of workers came to the rolling hills of Montana with their families for the project.
