iPad 2s “Made in Brazil” Available as Early as July? Posted: 06 May 2011 09:52 PM PDT
The retrofitted factory was supposed to open in November, but according to a Reuters report, the plant could start producing iPad 2s as early as July. Foxconn’s new plan is nothing short of aggressive, and will help Apple supply enough devices in the 28 countries where the iPad 2 is currently available, and offer the device in additional markets across the globe. Currently, all iOS devices are exclusively built off Foxconn factories located in Shenzhen, China. Countries like Brazil have been trying to convince Apple and Foxconn to build additional factories to build iPhones and iPads, to supplement the existing Chinese factories, and offer a production center better suited to serve the North and South American markets. Foxconn and Apple are desperately trying to find ways to increase the production output of the iPad 2, to deal with the shortages currently experienced across the globe. Foxconn is also in the process of ramping up more production lines at its existing plants in China, and is currently able to ship about 4 to 5 million units a month. » Related posts:

Frisbee Forever – iPad App Review Posted: 06 May 2011 02:23 PM PDT
The point of Frisbee Forever is to toss your disc through an increasingly difficult series of courses. The settings vary from an amusement park to the wild west, to a tropical paradise, but the idea is to guide the disc through targets (hoops, triangles, etc.) to reach the end of the course. Players can set the controls to “tap” or “tilt” to guide the disc. As the disc flies through the air it can pick up stars that help it maintain enough speed to finish the course. I found that if I held the iPad steady I could effortlessly pick up a bunch if stars. Satisfying! The stars are Frisbee Forever’s currency. Use them to open a new level or to purchase a cool new disc in the store. Players also win new discs and trophies as they progress through the game, or take the quick route and purchase star coins. (1000 star coins will run you $ 0.99). As casual games go, Frisbee Forever is neither too easy nor too difficult. It will appeal to a wide range of gamers. At the end of each course players earn stars, even if the course was not completed, so young children or less talented players still progress through the game. The game was still fun even when it was clear that I would be unable to complete a level. When I crashed the disc into one of the targets, which happened a few times, it made a realistic “clunk” sound before dropping to the ground. If I missed a target and knew I would be repeating a level, I would gently guide the disc to its stopping place. As one who frequently utters “sorry” while accidentally tossing a real Frisbee yards away from its intended target, this felt comfortingly familiar. The game has a pause button, so if real life intrudes, players need not worry that it will cost them a victory. The sounds can be muted at the start of the game, though I felt they added to the game play. Frisbee Forever was well-designed, and easy to pick up with a few minutes to kill, or to devote hours trying to earn 8000 star points to buy a coveted Donut Frisbee.
What I liked: Frisbee Forever is easy to learn. The disc flies realistically. The game play was smooth and free from technical glitches. What I didn't like: I tried both the tilt and tap methods of game play. While I found the tilt method more intuitive, it was difficult to keep from overcompensating and turning the whole game upside-down. To buy or not to buy: Frisbee Forever is currently available for download in the App Store for free. It should appeal to a wide range of players of any age. It will not be too frustrating for the talentless gamer, yet skillful players will still find the harder courses challenging. Anyone who has ever enjoyed tossing a disc around is likely to enjoy this game. Just don’t forget to go outside and play the real thing once in awhile too.

RedLynx and Gameloft Tease Us with Upcoming iOS Games Posted: 06 May 2011 12:16 PM PDT
RedLynx introduced us to the addictive drawing racing technique with their original DrawRace game, which allowed everyone to draw a path on the track, and let you speed away while racing others. Gameloft found success with their Let’s Golf series by introducing us to a graphic intensive golfing experience. Now, both companies have released video teasers for their upcoming sequels across iOS devices. For DrawRace 2, RedLynx has improved the exciting original DrawRace physics experience and added an all-new career mode as well as enhanced global, national and friend leagues and Leader Boards. The upcoming game features 180 challenges and 16 cars that you can race across 32 tracks in a 3D environment. Even though DrawRace’s concept is quite simple, besides drawing your racing line what makes it fun and challenging is the speed of your finger, which defines the speed of your car. It is always fun to watch your car race the line you drew! The new game is due to come out this summer. Check out the following video to see what’s in store for you. Gameloft has released a new video teasing us about their upcoming game Let’s Golf 3. We expect to see more new courses, new characters, and wait, that new gopher that shows up on the video. Perhaps, we will not only need to face the weather elements and contours of the golf courses, but also battle against that mysterious gopher while playing golf! » Related posts:

iPad Controls 82% of US Tablet Market Posted: 06 May 2011 11:30 AM PDT
Apple’s tablets are split fairly evenly between WiFi and 3G – 43% of iPad tablet owners have a WiFi only model and 39% have a 3G + WiFi model. Samsung has 4% of the tablet market share with the Galaxy Tab, Dell has 3% with its tablets, and Motorola Mobility has 2%. The remaining 9% is made up of other tablets. Clearly tablets based on the Android operating system are still just as unpopular, and there doesn’t seem to be anything great coming up. It stands to reason that Apple’s going to dominate the tablet market for the foreseeable future, but that’s not exactly shocking news. What’s more interesting about Nielsen’s April survey is the information on how tablets have changed the use of PCs and other electronic devices. 35% of tablet owners who also own a desktop computer are reporting that they use their desktop computer less often or not at all, while 32% who owned laptops said they also used their laptop less often or never. Additionally, 27% of tablet owners who own an eReader use it less often, 27% who use portable media players use them less often, and 25% of tablet owners who own portable gaming consoles are using them less often or not at all. It is definitely the era of the tablet right now. I know I’m certainly using my laptop less often in favor of the even more portable iPad, and my eReader hasn’t been turned on in months. Are your device usage habits inline with Nielsen’s results? Have your PCs and laptops been largely replaced with your iPad? » Related posts:

New Tablet From Amazon to Offer iPad Competition Posted: 06 May 2011 09:45 AM PDT
Virtually every detail about Amazon’s new device is currently based on speculation, like claims that it will take advantage of Google’s Android operating system. The primary expectation is that it will take advantage of Amazon’s app store, which levels the playing field somewhat against Apple. This is something no other rival can claim. It would also make sense that this device be integrated with CloudDrive, which offers online file storage much like Apple’s MobileMe. So many people are already referring to this as the Anti-Pad or the latest iPad threat. While I doubt Apple is trembling just yet, there is one place Amazon has excelled to date that may just cause a shiver: a electronic paper display that lessens eye strain when used for long periods of time. If Amazon can translate this technology into their color screens, combined with the ability to be easily viewed in direct sunlight, that may be all the encouragement many users need to choose their product over an iPad. However, it’s easier said than done. It isn’t clear whether the introduction of this new tablet will eliminate the existing Kindle e-reader devices offered by Amazon, especially in light of how well they have performed as the most popular device of its kind. What is clear, is that Amazon will be using their brand recognition and already loyal customer base to drive sales. Quanta already manufactures the RIM Playbook and is rumored to be producing a similar device for Sony. Whatever they look like, it is expected that we will have our first look at these new devices in the second half of 2011. » Related posts:

Burn it All – iPad Game Review Posted: 06 May 2011 09:06 AM PDT
This is a time-based challenge game where the goal is to guide your little flame as it burns up everything in each level in the quickest and most efficient way. Your flame will burn through various configurations of ropes, wood, and bats, while trying to avoid things like water drops and air jets.
When you start the game, you begin with a series of ropes and your burning companion resting in the lower right corner. It’s your job to drag him with your finger on to the ends of the ropes in order to set them on fire. Everything in the stage has to burn before the timer runs out, and the faster you clear the stage, the higher the score. You also get between zero and three diamonds for each completed level, with three being rewarded for the quickest infernos. The flame you begin with, the red flame, can only burn one thing at a time. Once you’ve lit a rope on fire, he returns to his corner to recharge and you have to quickly drag him to the next rope. The recharging is a key element of gameplay, as it causes you to carefully choose your moves. You can’t move too quickly or too slowly, which can be both exciting and frustrating. Burning and recharging is the general basis of the entire game. It sounds simple, and it is. I was able to progress through the levels with little problem, but the real skill challenge came with trying to get the maximum number of diamonds. The puzzles require a lot of thought and planning to execute perfectly. During gameplay, there are two other types of flames – blue and green – which both have additional abilities and restrictions. There are also three kinds of rope and various wooden obstacles to burn, plus bats to “hug.” That’s right, the goal is to drag your fiery little minion to hug bats, which very unfortunately sets them on fire. During your quest to wreak havoc, there are a few obstacles to navigate. Water droplets will quench your flame if you touch them and air jets can be beneficial or harmful, so there’s a lot of experimentation to be had. There are a total of four different worlds at this time, each with 25 levels, and a new, fifth world in development. As you progress through the worlds, the difficulty ramps up and you’re given new abilities at the perfect intervals. Burn It All never gets stagnant because there’s always something new going on. For example, during the fourth world, there’s a new time warp event. First you play through as the red flame, then shift back in time to play through with the blue flame. While you’re controlling the blue flame, the red flame is running through the actions that you previously played – so you’ve got two flames burning things at once. It sounds complicated, and it is – this can definitely be tough to master because it’s important to coordinate what you burned with the red flame and what you need to focus on first with the blue flame. However, it’s a really unique element of gameplay that I found to be engrossing and fun. The game includes all kinds of score sharing options. You can connect it to Facebook and share your achievements at any time, plus it supports Game Center and Open Feint, which provides a lot of replay value for those of you who like to get the best score and all of the achievements. What I liked: The ability to skip a level. It’s the worst when you’re stuck in a particular level of a puzzle game with no way to progress, but that’s not the case here. You can finish other levels of a world and then go back to beat the ones you were having trouble with. What I didn’t like: It continually asked me if I wanted to rate the game, while threatening to burn poor little kittens if I didn’t. I wished there was a way to disable the popups, especially after I had already declined twice. To buy or not to buy: Definitely. This is a great game for playing in short stretches of time, waiting in line or on a break at work. Gameplay is challenging but never frustrating and it’s definitely a game I’ll come back to. For a mere $0.99, it’s worth checking out.

Super Ball Escape HD – iPad App Review Posted: 06 May 2011 07:01 AM PDT
The star of the game is a robot ball that you must navigate through puzzles, killing enemies and avoiding obstacles and hazards, but never falling over the edge into the void below (which I did very frequently). This is made more complicated by a series of narrow hallways that you must roll your way around and thru by tilting, twisting and turning your iPad or iPhone. A few tricks up your sleeve make playing this game easier including the ability to freeze, morph, camouflage and more! Choose the upgrades that most closely match your style of playing. There are three difficulty levels, easy, medium and hard. If you and your ability to balance are at all like me and mine, you will never master this game on easy! I had enough difficulty getting past the training levels, but once you have exhausted your game-play with the included levels, you can purchase more levels in-game for $1.99.
What I liked: I enjoy games where you really feel like you are competing against your own personal best. The more patient you are, the better you will do –which is a real catch 22, because the more times you try to navigate these puzzles the less patient you will become! What I didn't like: The graphics in-game are a little lackluster and it feels a bit like the controls are not always sensitive or responsive enough to make the intricate twists and hairpin turns required. To buy or not to buy: If you like games that challenge your coordination and agility skills I would definitely give it a try. The included levels are difficult enough that you won’t feel that you need to immediately purchase more in order to enjoy the game.
