Forgotten Places Lost Circus HD – iPad Promo Code Giveaway

Posted: 01 May 2011 09:34 PM PDT

Hidden object games are very popular in our house.  Both of my kids will spend hours on the iPad reading clues, looking for items and solving puzzles, eventually making their way through a series of obstacles and accomplishing their goal.

Forgotten Places – Lost Circus HD is an app from Sungift Games that we all got together and played.  Gathered around the iPad, we began our journey on a dark and stormy night to help Joy discover the source of her real-life nightmares.

Together we explored the current state of the abandoned circus, as well as Joy’s detailed memories of the circus in all its glory, in search of hidden objects.  We looked for clues, solved puzzles, played mini-games along the way and had some fun.

If you enjoy searching for hidden objects and solving puzzles, this app is a great option.  Lots of challenges, plus two levels of difficulty equals hours of fun for kids and adults.  Forgotten Places – Lost Circus HD has been featured in the App Store’s New and Noteworthy section and is available now for a limited time for $2.99.  Or, you can enter our contest and win a free app code.

‘Splashtop Remote Browser’ Enables PC Browsers On Your iPad

Posted: 01 May 2011 08:14 PM PDT

If you’re a Windows PC owner, you’re in luck. A new application on the App Store lets you use Firefox, Internet Explorer or Chrome to browse the web directly from your iPad using the default browser on your main computer.

Splashtop Remote Browser was designed to run your PC's default browser from the iPad, including all of your plug-ins from Adobe Flash, Microsoft’s Silverlight, Java, any stored login credentials, bookmarks, and more.

The Splashtop Remote Browser app acts as a limited VPN to a Windows PC. The way it works is quite simple. Splashtop Remote Browser connects your iPad to your PC (Windows only for now). Make sure your PC is on, and proceed to install the free Remote Streamer on it. You do not need to be in front of the PC after you install the Streamer. Once the app connects to your PC, it launches your regular web browser, and shows it on your iPad.

Some of the benefits for Windows PC users are:

  • Access to Flash-based video. From your iPad you can visit online video, music and radio websites.
  • Ability to play Shockwave games. Browser-based gaming is still quite popular. This app allows you to play Flash or Shockwave games from your iPad.
  • Access to proprietary media formats or use of ActiveX controls on your browser.
  • Intuitive touch controls and iPad keyboard for easy input

The Splashtop Remote Browser app can be downloaded for free now. The Splashtop Remote Streamer is also a free download.

Editor’s Note: The free Splashtop Remote Browser supports browsing for up to 5 minutes. If you want access to unlimited sessions, you will need to download the full Splashtop Remote Desktop app, which will set you back $4.99, but will provide many more PC control-type features. The following video shows some of the powerful features that come with the full Splashtop Remote Desktop app.

Samsung Widens Lawsuit Against Apple

Posted: 01 May 2011 06:35 PM PDT

Samsung widened their patent infringement lawsuit against Apple this week by initiating a lawsuit against the manufacturer in the US.  This news comes after similar claims were made in Asia and Europe earlier this month.

While it is their claim that Apple is violating 10 patents pertaining to mobile phones, it was Apple who first made the bold move toward defending their intellectual property by suing Samsung because they felt that the Galaxy products too closely imitated iPhone and iPad specifications and design.  It is speculated that just as Samsung filed counter-suit, so will Apple in this jurisdiction.

What makes this more interesting is that while initiating this lawsuit, Apple has maintained their intention to continue with the strong relationship founded between the two companies.  This is due in no small part to necessity: Samsung is their leading supplier of LCD panels and semiconductors.  With that said, It isn’t likely that Apple is concerned.  They have launched suits against suppliers in the past without harm to their bottom line and I expect this is no exception.  Samsung likely wants to hang on to Apple’s business in any regard, particularly with news of their recent dropping profits.

The question has been posed as to whether this is more accurately a war against Android and the debate rages on.  While it may appear a logical conclusion, the sales figures seem to indicate that Apple has nothing to be concerned about.  Even Motorola, the manufacturer voted “most likely to stop Apple in its’ tracks” has failed to put a dent in the market share held by iPhone and iPad devices.  This, combined with the nature of the claims (such as packaging design, on-screen keyboard functionality and product shell coloring) seem to indicate quite to the contrary.

In the end, in a venue that is very competitive, it will be left up to the courts to decide which are reasonable market standards vs. patent infringements.

Motorola Ships 250,000 Xooms, Sells Even Fewer

Posted: 01 May 2011 06:16 PM PDT

Thursday, April 28, 2011 marked the release of Motorola’s financial results from the first quarter of this fiscal year.  In this document Motorola indicates having shipped over 250,000 Xoom devices, while also reporting a net loss for the same time period.

It should be noted that there was no detail provided on the number of Xooms actually sold to consumers, only those released to the channel.  In fact, many reports indicate it may be as few as 15,000 devices sold.

In contrast, Apple released their financial results for the second quarter of its fiscal year, which ended in March, 2011 and was pleased to report selling 4.7 million iPads during this time.

The Xoom is the first tablet to take advantage of the Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) platform and was regarded to be the most significant threat to the iPad to date.  A spec by spec comparison does render the devices in a very competitive light with most critics hailing the open nature of the Android platform, but there is no underestimating the power of the identity and elegance of the iPad.  Consumers are drawn to it.

Before the release of the iPad 2, the Xoom may have had a larger upper hand –but with the addition of the dual cameras, faster processor and slimmer profile, the iPad 2 has closed the gap.  Add to that the simplicity of the hardware configurations, making it much easier for iOS developers to deliver solid, bug-free applications as compared to the contingencies required to develop for the ever varied Android hardware options and it becomes easier to see why more consumers are reaching toward Apple instead of Motorola.

Motorola shouldn’t be too hard on themselves.  By comparison, Research in Motion (RIM) has also reported significant financial loss following the lackluster release of their Playbook tablet, their non-iOS/non-Android entry into the mobile market.

One thing is for certain: by specification standards the Xoom is a device to be reckoned with, and that will only make the iPad stronger in an effort to remain competitive.

VH1 Releases VH1 Co-Star for iPad

Posted: 01 May 2011 10:02 AM PDT

MTV Networks brings you VH1 Co-Star, the app that value-adds to your favorite VH1 television shows.  While MTV describes this app as being ‘like a DVR for social commentary’, I prefer to describe it as a companion to your favorite television entertainment. Everything is more fun when you do it as a group!

Co-Star offers additional video footage, photos and trivia as well as badges (achievements earned by answering trivia questions). In addition, you can interact with others who love the shows you love using your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts –choosing to post only in the Co-Star interface or to those social networks as well.

There are a number of little details that make this app special. Using the WatchWith feature, it uses your GPS to identify your viewing time zone so you can watch your shows ‘with’  your online friends. This way if you are reading live comments, even if they were posted earlier they will be cued to the corresponding moment in the show for you.

When you first load the app, you will be able to see which show is currently on the air and which one was next.  This adds to the element of engagement, because I felt drawn to watch the current show as well as the next show, and to work toward earning achievements just to see them appear on my screen.

VH1 Co-Star VH1 Co-Star VH1 Co-Star VH1 Co-Star

What I liked: The idea is neat –unfortunately is only limited to shows on VH1.

What I didn't like: The interface is a little difficult to intuit. While you can earn achievements (in the form of badges), this app is not linked into Game Center.

To buy or not to buy: The value of this app rests on whether you are a die hard fan of any VH1 shows. If you can’t live without them, you can’t live without this app.

  • App Name: VH1 Co-Star
  • Version Reviewed: 1.0
  • Category: Entertainment
  • Developer: MTV Networks
  • Price: Free
