Real Racing Goes 1080P

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 03:16 PM PDT

In an age where it is hard enough to find a console game that displays in full 1080P, it is practically unheard of to even fathom an iOS game reaching those heights of resolution. Choosing to push the envelope of the platform, Real Racing 2′s developer, Firemint, has announced that there is an update that should be hitting by Easter that will unlock full 1080P output from the iPad 2 if you use an external monitor that is HDMI capable.

These unique dual screen controls allow you to interact with what is happening on your external monitor, while displaying the groundbreaking game with a graphical fidelity has been unheard of on the platform, truly showing off what the iPad 2 as a device is truly capable of.  But now that they have pulled out all of the stops, where can Real Racing 2 go from here?  Watch out Gran Turismo, there is a new competitor in your rear-view mirror.

Some games, while far from perfect, are such earnest efforts that it’s easy to overlook their imperfections. Then there are games like Egypt: Engineering An Empire HD – games with substantial resources at their disposal, whose imperfections are so glaring and, let’s face it, arrogant, that it’s hard to see past them at all. Produced in conjunction with the History Channel, Egypt: Engineering An Empire HD is an attempt at creating a rival to the Civilization-style game created by Sid Meier. It does not succeed.

If you’ve ever played any incarnation of Sid Meier’s Civilization (but especially the earliest, and some say the best, versions of the game) you will recognize the similarities immediately: a mostly-hidden world map, a small city to develop, etc. However, unlike Civilization, it’s VERY unclear how to accomplish pretty much anything in the game from the start. Yes, there is a tutorial, but it is all text-based and is actually inaccurate – how you’re supposed to “left click” on an iPad’s screen is a trick I haven’t yet learned. It’s difficult to learn the ropes of a game that has done nothing to differentiate itself from its PC predecessor. Developers know better than this, and this rushed approach taints the gameplay throughout Egypt: Engineering An Empire HD.

Once I actually got the game somewhat figured out (a challenging process), I was disappointed that it felt so shallow and so graphically bland. There’s battle and a few spare ways to enhance your civilization or form alliances, but it certainly does not approach the depth of even the simplest Civilization game. The graphics resemble early PC strategy games, and the iPad is certainly capable of much more.

To its credit, the game does feature a limited multiplayer feature, but on a whole it’s MUCH easier to recommend Civilization: Revolutions to anyone interested in civ building on his/her iPad. While there’s a difference in price point between the two games, sometimes you do get what you pay for.

iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Design your own home. On your iPhone.

If you’re a fan of architecture and designing home floor plans, then you’ll love Home Design 3D. The app brings the desktop software caliber experience of designing a home floor plan to iOS, allowing you to create your own designs on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Home Design 3D allows you to design your very own floor plan and features several useful tools to accomplish that. You can lay out your home in any fashion you like – you have near-total freedom here in that sense. You can plan your design in complete detail, placing doors and windows where you want them, along with furniture and room design options that let you set up your living room and bedrooms with furniture and your kitchen and bathroom with sinks and toilets, respectively. The number of options, along with the flexibility to do whatever you want, is impressive.

The app provides the measurement information for each room in your home and you can also name individual rooms. Theoretically, if you wanted to design an actual home using Home Design 3D, you could do so. And you can even e-mail yourself your floor plan.

There is also a 3D mode that lets you get a three-dimensional view of your home design, including any extras you’ve placed in it, whether they be doors, windows or furniture. Graphically, the mode is somewhat simplistic – as expected – but it gets the job done. I certainly can’t complain considering you can do all this on your iPhone.

The only real downside to Home Design 3D is that you’re somewhat limited when it comes to geometric features of your design. Each room you create must be either square or rectangle-shaped – you can’t create circular or triangular rooms if you want to get artsy, which is kind of lame.

As someone who has always had a curious interest in architecture, I find Home Design 3D to not only be an incredibly useful iPhone app, I find it to be a genuinely enjoyable one too. And for only $5, it’s impressive. Would you want to actually design your entire home using this software? Maybe not. It’s a bit limited for a full-scale project like that. But you can definitely get started using it. And, if nothing else, you can have fun creating your own virtual/imaginary home with it.

On a Tilt Review

A new tilt-based puzzler for iPhone.

Overall Rating: 3.31 out of 5 stars

Even if tilting games have been done countless times on iPhone, On a Tilt manages to provide a fun twist on the genre. The game comes from Eric Brill and delivers a challenging tilt-based puzzle experience for iPhone.

The goal of the game is to tilt your iPhone to line up two or more lines within the highlighted areas on the screen. The catch is that you must do so before the time limit expires or else it’s game over. In the first couple of levels, you simply have to tilt your device left and right to align things. But as you move through the game’s levels, the challenge quickly increases. Eventually, you’ll find yourself trying to line four boxes, along with other gimmicks thrown in the mix, such as boxes that fade, move and so on.

The experience is an enjoyable and challenging one. You’ll have to tilt your iPhone all over the place to successfully complete each level. Later in the game, it gets quite difficult, as you’ll have very little time to make decisions on which way to tilt your device.

One of my biggest complaints with On a Tilt is that it’s not a universal app, so even if you play it on the iPad, you don’t have full-screen, HD visuals. This is unfortunate because this is the kind of game that would definitely function much better on a large screen. A device like the iPad would be the ideal home for On a Tilt, but it doesn’t take full advantage of its higher resolution screen, which is just kind of disappointing. Also, because of the nature of the game, there are times when you’re required to tilt the screen in a fashion that makes it difficult to even see what’s going on. Definitely something that’s inherent to this kind of game, though.

On a Tilt is an enjoyable little app, but it’s not particularly impressive or memorable even. At the end of the day, it lacks the longevity to keep you coming back. Thankfully, it’s fun for a while, and it only costs a dollar.

Final Fantasy III Comes to iPad

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 06:04 AM PDT

Last month, Square Enix released Final Fantasy III for the iPhone and iPod Touch to much fan excitement. However, as awesome as having Final Fantasy III on both devices is, something was sorely missing: an iPad version.

This week that changes. The publisher has announced that an iPad version of Final Fantasy III is now available on the iTunes App Store.

The iPad version of the game features improved 3D visuals and the touch screen controls have been adjusted specifically for the iPad.

Final Fantasy III first released on the Famicom in 1990. The RPG was well-received by gamers, introducing a job system that allows you to change classes at anytime along the adventure. It also introduced the idea of being able to summon creatures, a mechanic that would go on to influence the design of future installments in the series.

Today, many consider Final Fantasy III to be one of the greatest RPGs of all time.

You can find the iPad version of Final Fantasy III on the iTunes App Store and download it for $16.99.
