Telltale and NBCUniversal Bring Law and Order To The App Store

    Posted: 26 Apr 2011 09:30 AM PDT

Anyone who has watched cable television pretty much ever should be very familiar with reruns of the infamous Law and Order and the iconic “doink, doink” sound effect.  When the original program was cancelled last fall, fans were greatly disappointed to learn that they would not get the chance to see season twenty-one of its marathon television run.  For this very reason it came as no shock that soon thereafter the team at Law and Order decided to follow in the footsteps of CSI and transplant the franchise to a sunnier locale – in this case, Los Angeles.

So it should also come as no surprise that NBCUniversal is very pleased to announce that they are partnering with episodic gaming juggernaut Telltale Games to bring the drama of the courtroom to the App Store very soon.

“With the ‘Law & Order: LA’ games, Telltale will build from the experience and expertise cultivated through numerous seasons of police and crime procedural games over the years.  The ‘Law & Order: LA’ games will take the crime solving focus to interrogation and criminal investigations, with a heavy dose of courtroom drama on each case.  Telltale will also continue to advance its unique approach to cinematic presentation and storytelling as well as dialog and character interactions.”

The crime drama genre should really come as nothing new to Telltale, especially considering that they have already released a couple of licensed CSI based games.  Really though, isn’t this kind of a betrayal of the CBS network’s most popular series?  I am sure the lawyers had a good time trying to untangle that legal knot, but rest assured that we will be seeing the “doink, doink” making its return very soon.  We will keep you on any new details in regards to this agreement as they become available.

You Can Get Cooties From An iOS Device

    Posted: 26 Apr 2011 08:30 AM PDT

That’s right folks, the scourge of the kindergarten playground is back and this time it has manifested itself on the the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad.  Mothers lock up your daughters and fathers try to warn your sons about the newest outbreak of this horrible condition that has now advanced beyond being a more than just a figment of your imagination into an actual iOS game.

In what looks to be fun for the entire family, players have to gather stars and dodge cooties, as they attempt to clear every stage.  Following the Angry Birds trend, three stars are the goal, but just remember to avoid those noxious kisses, because everyone knows that they are super gross!

Easily the best part about the game is that it is currently on sale for free until May 1st, so be sure to download it before all of your friends get infected.  Next up, I want to option the rights to a kindergarten version of Pac-Man and call it “Chill Pills.”  You know where to send the royalty checks, Namco.

You’ve got one life. Can you do it?

Overall Rating: 3.13 out of 5 stars

When I first heard of One Single Life, I was instantly intrigued. The concept behind the game is spelled out in the title. This is a 2D platformer in which you have one life. If you die, it’s game over. Period. How can’t you be curious?

The gameplay in One Single Life is incredibly simple and straight forward. You control a runner who must jump across city skyscrapers. The challenge lies in timing the controls. You tap the screen to make your character start running and tap it again to make him jump.

Before you actually attempt each level in “reality,” as the game calls it, you have a chance to practice the jump as many times as you like without fear of getting a game over. Once you attempt the level in “reality,” though, the game begins to accomplish its goal. The fear of dying sets in. Each level starts with a sign telling you the percentage of players that have died at this very point, which adds to the atmosphere. There’s definitely a sense of anxiety and nervousness whenever you attempt a jump, considering if you fail it, you can’t play anymore. In this sense, One Single Life is quite successful.

That said, there’s a serious problem here, and you’ve already read about it. There’s the practice mode before each level, which essentially defeats the entire purpose of the game. Yeah, it’s nice being able to practice a level before you commit to your one chance at passing it, but then it’s not really “one single life” anymore. It’s kind of an odd design decision that goes against the entire theme of the game, really. It’s a little perplexing.

One Single Life is a fun little game with an interesting concept behind it. In some ways, it’s successful in its mission to make you feel the anxiety of only having one life. But then when you consider that you can practice an infinite number of times before you play any level, some of that tension goes out the window. Also, the game is naturally a short one, so you won’t get a whole lot of play time out of it.

Despite my criticism, I have to admit that One Single Life is an interesting game, and if you’re at all intrigued by it, it’s worth downloading. After all, it is free.

    Slit-Scan Camera Review

    Slit-Scan Camera Review

By Jennifer Allen on April 26th, 2011
    Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: UNIQUE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Slit-Scan Camera evokes some clever, warped looks for your photos.

    Developer: Funner Labs
Price: FREE (pro version available for $1.99)
    Version Reviewed: 1.0
    Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.42 out of 5 stars

There’s no denying that there are a lot of photo filtering apps out there. Slit-Scan Camera aims to do things a little differently though. Photography buffs might recognise the term slit-scan. It’s a process where a moveable slide, with a slit cut into it, is inserted between the camera and the item you’re photographing. It’s a little more complicated than that, though, and can be credited with creating some impressive results such as the warp effect of the starship Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Slit-Scan Camera the app does something remarkably similar once you master the effect.

Using the sliding slit by dragging it across the screen, you end up with some pretty bizarre results whereby parts of the screen can look warped rather than other sections. It’s simple to use but takes a little while to actually master. At first, you just end up with some weird results that look a little messy. While the controls attempt to explain what they do through a simple diagram, your best chance of success is to simply experiment. When you’ve fully figured something out though, it’s a pretty good feeling and the results are cool to show your friends.

How much you use Slit-Scan Camera is another question however. It’s so quirky that I’m not entirely convinced I’d use it a huge deal other than when messing around with friends. It’s a free download of course which certainly weighs in its favor. The pro version boosts the resolution and allows you to rotate the slit orientation, as well as removes the ads, but it’s not essential to your enjoyment by any means. You can have nearly as much fun with the free app too. It’s certainly enjoyable to mess around with but don’t expect to use this as regularly as post filter apps. This is more of a backup, quirky kind of thing to mess around with every now and then. There’s certainly nothing else really like it on the App Store.

Enchanting Update For Disney Princess Dress-Up: My Sticker Book

    Posted: 26 Apr 2011 06:03 AM PDT

Every now and then I think that I’ve finally become a proper adult, all responsible and doing away with childish things. Then I walk near a Disney store and all those allusions go out the window as I’m too busy exclaiming ‘awww’ at every single cuddly toy. A similar ‘awww’ came from me when I saw the latest update to Disney Princess Dress-Up: My Sticker Book.

It’s been updated as part of the excitement build up of the upcoming Royal Wedding at the end of the week. For those uninitiated in the app, you can use it to take photos of your children and ‘become’ part of the Princess storylines. This update adds a new Princess Tiana, 7 new stories as well as 25 new outfits and accessories that your children can dress themselves up with.

It’s a neat little idea anyhow that’s bound to be a big hit with young fans, even more so now that there are even more outfits to dress up in.

The update is available now for those who have already purchased the app, otherwise it’s $3.99 for newcomers to it. Oh and it’s an Universal app which is always convenient!
