Will & Kate – A Royal Wedding Story for Kids on the iPad Posted: 25 Apr 2011 09:58 PM PDT
The cute story of William and Catherine includes seventeen pages of interactive elements and sounds effects. Kids discover lots of hidden surprises by simply tapping and swiping objects on each page. Join the couple on a hot air balloon ride, control a fireworks display over the skies of London, help Catherine find the perfect wedding dress and more in the pages of this fun book. Kids have two reading options available. ”Read to Me” provides narration for each page of the book, allowing non-readers to enjoy the story on their own. The “Read it Myself” option encourages independent reading from older kids or gives parents an opportunity to read and share a story with their child. Friday’s Royal Wedding promises to be one of the biggest events of century and Will & Kate gets children involved in the festivities. With interactive features available on every page, this cute app is one most kids (especially little girls) will enjoy. Will & Kate is available for download from the App Store now for $3.99. » Related posts:

Apple Sued Over iPad and iPhone Location Tracking Issue Posted: 25 Apr 2011 07:45 PM PDT
According to a Bloomberg report, a couple of iPhone customers in Florida are already suing Apple over the location tracking ‘feature’ introduced in iOS 4. While the location tracking file was discovered some time ago, it didn't get much coverage until the Guardian published a piece about it last week. For some unknown reason, GPS-enabled iOS devices such as 3G iPad 1/2 and iPhone save the location of their owner on a regular basis, in a file stored on the device, and saved by iTunes each time the device is plugged into a Mac or a PC. Data extracted from an iPhone location file – Credit: Guardian Apple has been surprisingly mute about the issue, a fact that fuels current lawsuits: “Apple hasn't commented on the matter since the April 20 report was released. [...] We take issue specifically with the notion that Apple is now basically tracking people everywhere they go,” according to Aaron Mayer, an attorney for the plaintiffs. Interestingly enough, the issue may be nothing more than an iOS bug: according to John Gruber over at Daring's Fireball, the tracking file was never meant to store as much data as it actually does, and a bug is preventing iOS from purging older location information.
Steve Jobs himself commented on the issue, via one of his typically short, straight to the point email, sent to an iPhone user who asked him to explain why Apple was apparently tracking users:

Hummingz EVO HD- iPad Game Review Posted: 25 Apr 2011 03:24 PM PDT
The creators of this game must have been the kids down at the arcade after school every day, wasting their quarters trying to get tops scores on Centipede because Hummingz EVO imitates the Atari classic with love and reverence. The game is fast and fun and replayability is high. Each level drops a string of bugs linked together that you must shoot down with your lady bug using droplets of water. Like Centipede, you can shoot the mushrooms out of the way and more appear when you shoot your string of bugs. In addition to the string of bugs, spiders fall from the sky, bees hover over, snails crawl by and there are bosses to beat. That's right, bosses. Once you have progressed far enough along in each level, you encounter a boss. A giant bug shows up and causes mayhem. You have to take him out while avoiding falling spiders, killing the string of bugs and avoid getting hit by the enemy, all while trying to recapture the corpses when they fall. It is pretty intense. In Hummingz EVO, not only do you gain points for killing the bugs, but you gain points for recapturing their corpses as they fall down. Collecting additional items gives you bonuses and even extra lives. This aspect of the game makes it much less frustrating to get through. You actually have a chance to progress, as opposed to Centipede where you would drop in your quarter and the game would only last 45 seconds. Visually, the game is beautiful. It is colorful and the graphics are great. There are different backgrounds for the different levels, each one matching the boss you will encounter at the end. The audio is retro-style and can be turned off if you are trying to play your game in secret. Overall, this game is a dream-come true for Centipede fans of all ages. This game may even take its place in History as the game that Centipede wished it could have grown up to be. There is an iPhone version for only $0.99. The HD version at $1.99 is optimized for the iPad. What I liked: The graphics are amazing and the boss level is a pleasant addition to an already perfect game play style. The replay value is high. What I didn't like: There only appears to be three different levels, although I have not beaten them all. It seems like the game could be over fairly fast for any Centipede pros out there. To buy or not to buy: This is a definite buy. It is only $1.99 for hours of fun. In 1984, I would have gone through two dollars in five minutes.

South Park Updates Avatar Creator App, Debuts Episode “HumancentiPad” Posted: 25 Apr 2011 01:53 PM PDT
The Avatar Creator looks like it will be fun to use, and longtime South Park fans will surely have their avatars created before they sit down to watch “HumancentiPad” debut. The episode furthers the rivalry between Kyle, who is involved with a “revolutionary new product” from Apple, and Cartman, who still doesn’t have a regular iPad yet. Cartman blames his mother. Remember how much Cartman wanted a Wii? So much that he froze himself because he couldn’t wait three weeks until the game console was for sale. There is no doubt that his histrionic outrage in “HumancentiPad” will be very entertaining. And just what is a HumancentiPad? The animated version of Steve Jobs in the preview wasn’t giving too much away yet, so we will all have to tune in and find out. As with most ideas Trey Parker and Matt Stone cook up, it’s certainly not for the squeamish or anyone under 17. » Related posts:

G-Form iPad Case: The Extreme Sleeve (New Video) Posted: 25 Apr 2011 12:14 PM PDT
The flexible nature of the case is surprising especially after seeing one dropped from the sky, but the lightweight case still protects the iPad. The material that is used in the case reacts to the pressure incurred during impact, dispersing up to 90% of the energy much in the same way that bullet proof vests work. The company is quite protective of the exact specifications on the PORON-XRD material and rightfully so, because if everyone knew how to make a case like this then every company would be crazy not to have their own twist. Rather than simply adding inches of padding, this case uses basic physics to protect your iPad or iPad 2 the most effective way possible. Although this case does not allow use of the iPad while it is still inside, it seems as though it would be a great case for those who like having their iPads on hand rather than packing them away in a backpack. It also looks like a great insurance plan for those who have less luck with their electronic equipment. Need any further proof? Check out this video that shows how the G-Form protects Apple’s tablet even when an 8 pound bowling ball is dropped on the iPad. » Related posts:

Here on Earth for iPad – iPad App Review Posted: 25 Apr 2011 09:56 AM PDT
Boasting over 60 minutes of multimedia content, this app features video chapter summaries as well as a large number of original short films by award-winning filmmakers and animators and several additional videos and animations used to illustrate the concepts outlined in the book. An inline notes feature allows you to document your own thoughts on the subject matter and an integrated Twitter feed means being able to communicate with others going through the same experience and learning the same material you are. I was pleased to see that nearly all of the media contained in this app is inline to the application itself so you don’t need an active Internet connection once it is installed. It should be noted, however, that this is reflected in the size of the app, requiring over 500MB of storage space to house these features. I found that the interface is not immediately intuitive, but once you familiarize yourself with the guide and are able to navigate through the various chapters and sub-sections, you will be greeted with an absolutely remarkable experience. If you are a visual learner, there is plenty to keep you engaged and occupied –but you should note that they do not recommend this book for readers under the age of 12 due to the subject matter sometimes including references to violence and suggestive themes. What I liked: The full text of the book is included for those of us who still enjoy reading the (new) old-fashioned way. If you choose, you can turn off all multi-media content which may be ideal if you are in a public place and find yourself without your headphones. What I didn't like: This is an expensive application by most standards, so you must be committed and fully interested in the subject matter to be able to justify this purchase. To buy or not to buy: If you are a science buff of any sort, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this app. Beautiful multimedia experiences combined with the text of a best-selling author make this app value added and enjoyable.

Great iPad Apps Downloads for this Week Posted: 25 Apr 2011 07:39 AM PDT The iPad ecosystem has grown drastically over the last twelve months. Just a few weeks ago, the number of dedicated iPad apps available in the App Store passed the 80,000 mark. Expect the trend to continue as more developers figure out ways to take advantage of the iPad 2 specs. In this article, we wanted to share some applications released this past week that you should consider as great downloads for your iPad.
Crackle – It’s On (by Sony)Sony's (free) Crackle app will give you access to hundreds of movies from Sony Pictures Classics, Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, and Tri-Star libraries. You also get the chance to enjoy a variety of TV series episodes. Sony is actually providing high-quality video streaming with a curated experience that fits quite nicely on the iPad. The video selection includes full-length Hollywood movies, and a very good selection of TV episodes from popular shows like Seinfeld, Married with Children, and many others. Since Crackle is a free application you will encounter short ads that appear during the video. However, most of the ads I've seen are very short ads, which should not be a problem for you. Let's not forget that Crackle is a free application, with no subscription fee and free content. NBA Jam HDEA released this past week an extremely popular and classic arcade game. The original NBA Jam is a basketball arcade game developed by Midway in 1993, which set the mark for a whole new genre of sports games back in the 1990s. Now, that same action-packed game-play joins the iPad. NBA Jam HD is a blast to play on the iPad. There are no fouls, normal violations or free throws. The game is pure action. You can download now for $9.99. Final Fantasy IIISquare-Enix made everyone rejoice with their release of the turn-based role-playing game (RPG), Final Fantasy III. Final Fantasy III was the first title of the Final Fantasy series to sell a million copies, and helped popularize turned-based, Japanese-style role-playing games across the globe. As usual with a Final Fantasy game, expect an extremely rich story, with several plot twists. The game will keep you entertained for 20+ hours, thanks to a large world to explore, many quests to complete and the ability to summon powerful creatures. Final Fantasy II is available now for $16.99. QwikiIf you’re ready to spend hours lost in random facts and articles on Wikipedia, then Qwiki is the right app for you. The application presents information in a way you haven't seen before on the iPad. It is a seamless port of the popular Qwiki website, which is a futuristic fact site that combines images, videos, and narration to describe and explain over three million topics. Qwiki is a great app that turns learning into an experience. For more details check our in-depth review by clicking here. Qwiki is a FREE download for your iPad. iHeartRadioClear Channel has extended its iheartradio Internet radio app to the iPad, and just like the iPhone version, the iPad app lets you stream music from any of the company's 750 radio stations that simulcast online. You can browse and stream music from all of Clear Channel's digital stations located across 150 cities in the U.S., along with the company's digital-only commercial free stations. The app gives you access to lots of radio stations, and is available now for download free of charge. Back to the Future: Episode 2Get ready for a great scientific destiny date with Back to the Future: Episode 2.
