Westwood, NJ, April 29, 2011 –(PR.com)– Alliance Hand and Physical Therapy held its final weigh-in date for all 130 participants of its fitness competition, the Healthy, Wealthy and Wise Challenge, April 7. In twelve weeks, the Healthy, Wealthy and Wise Challenge finished with its contestants collectively losing 836 pounds.

Participants gathered in Alliance HPT’s Hackensack clinic to commemorate their achievements and find out who were the winners of the competition. For the employees’ category, Rick Norman and Colleen Fitzsimmons took the gold. Meanwhile, Paul Fiolek and Peter Cole were the winners for the non-employee category.

“Losing weight is commendable, it’s keeping it off that’s the tough job,” according to Alliance HPT. Portland, OR – Safety labeling solutions provider Graphic Products, Inc. has released its newest thermal transfer labeler, the DuraLabel 2000 PLUS Handheld Label Printer.

"For anyone involved in facility management and safety, it is important to have an intuitive, portable, and cost-effective label printer that meets label-making demands efficiently," said Jeff Dahl, manufacturing operations manager at Graphic Products. "The DuraLabel 2000 PLUS is that printer."

Printing labels on one-half-inch, one-inch, and two-inch vinyl supply and operating on a rechargeable battery, the DuraLabel 2000 PLUS offers many features unique for a handheld labeler. Three main features stand out: a large LCD screen, zero printer cool-down time required, and a fast print speed.

The printer's viewable LCD screen (2.62″ x 1.31″)—significantly large for its category—shows five lines of a label design at a given time and provides an easy-to-read, high resolution display (256×128 pixels).

The DuraLabel 2000 PLUS boasts two alternating heat elements, which means zero printer cool-down time is required. In short, the printer will not overheat then shut down at inconvenient times during the labeling process — saving customers' time and generating more printed labels.

Printing at 0.40-inches per second, the DuraLabel 2000 PLUS prints labels approximately 54 percent faster than the leading competitor's handheld labeler, with printed labels maintaining industrial-quality properties.

"Another important feature is the auto-size setting for text and images," said Dahl. "Taking into account the number of lines on the label, the printer automatically sizes text and images to entirely fill the space on the label — eliminating the need to manually input the sizes in an exhaustive 'guess-and-check' process often required when using other handheld labelers."

The portable, 2.7-pound DuraLabel 2000 PLUS is ideal for industrial labeling applications including 5S labeling, pipe marking, equipment identification, rack labeling, electrical panel labeling, safety information labeling, barcode labeling, wire and cable wrapping, and valve tagging.

Tasting Grace is kicking off the summer with a live performance at The Downtown in Red Bank, NJ. The Downtown is one of New Jersey’s hottest night spots where rockers like Bruce Springsteen and Sebastian Bach like to hang out. A percentage of proceeds from the show will benefit Jason’s Dreams for Kids, a Red Bank-based foundation devoted to granting wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. During the night celebrity photographer Mark Weiss will be on hand showcasing some of his most famous photographs from past and present.

Tasting Grace most recently returned from Puerto Rico where they spent nearly a month promoting their new work “Alter Ego”. During their time there the band performed live on Entre Nosotras, one of the largest television talk shows, made guest appearances on all major radio stations including AlfaRock, and performed for fans old and new at venues like the Hard Rock, Logans and La Feria, the largest fair in the Carribbean.

Led by Jenna Grace Milano (singer, songwriter, guitar), the band is also comprised of Drew Leeds (lead guitar, keyboards), Johnny Rox (drums), and Willy Toledo (bass).

Four Iraqi Children Transported To Jordan To Receive Life Saving Heart Surgeries

Flowing into the Dead Sea, the River Jordan is undoubtedly a major source of water for Jordan and neighboring Israel, Syria and Lebanon, but it is most notably a historic site for Christ's baptismal by the Prophet John, signifying the beginning of Jesus Christ's ministry and the teachings of salvation and forgiveness, death and resurrection.

Easter came early this year for four Iraqi families whose prayers were answered when the Assyrian Medical Society recently intervened to complete a cardiac mission in Amman, Jordan.

Four Iraqi children were transported to Jordan where they were greeted by a group of volunteers from Gift of Life Amman (GOLA) and the cardiac team from United States to undergo surgeries for congenital cardiac abnormalities that otherwise threatened their little lives. From the Nineveh Plain (Northern Iraq) nine month-old Bashar Matti underwent surgery for ventricular septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus, while nine year-old Maryam Jibran was treated for ventricular septal defect. And from Basrah (Southern Iraq) four year-old Mrtadha Raad was treated for ventricular septal defect and pulmonary stenosis, and sixteen year-old Zainab Abdulsattar underwent surgery to treat a large artrial septal defect.

The surgeries were successful, and the children were reported to be doing significantly well while remaining in recuperation in Jordan before being transported back to Iraq along with their families.

Several groups came together to complete this cardiac mission. The Report of the UN Panel of Experts Supports the Case for Genocide in Sri Lanka

Credible evidence indicates that the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) committed murder, extermination, and persecution of the Tamil population of Vanni, in addition to torture, rape, disappearances, inhumane imprisonment, all of which constitute crimes against humanity. The events described in the UN report bear a striking resemblance to the genocide in Srebrenica while the estimated number of civilians deaths are an order of magnitude higher. Estimates of civilians deaths vary from 40 000 to 80 000 or more depending on the estimation methodology used.

Tamils Against Genocide (TAG) welcomes the publication of the advisory report submitted by the Secretary General's Panel of Experts on 12 April 2011. The report strongly supports our position that Sri Lanka has been engaged in a genocide of the Tamil people.

It provides estimates of Tamil civilian deaths in the final phase of the war ranging from 40 000, 75 000 to 80000 and 120 000 respectively based on different credible methodologies. The UN report concludes that a range of 40 000 deaths cannot be ruled out and finds that "most civilian casualties in the final phase of the war were caused by government shelling"

The Panel found credible evidence that the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) committed murder, extermination, and persecution of the Tamil population of Vanni, all of which constitute crimes against humanity (as defined in the Rome Statute of the ICC).

The report characterizes the systematic shelling of civilians and intentional deprivation of access to food and medicine as "calculated to bring about the destruction of a significant part of the civilian population". This characterization is identical to the definition of genocide in Article 2(c) of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide. The report based their findings on precedents set by the tribunals for Yugoslavia (ICTY) and Rwanda (ICTR), as well as ICC statutes and UN conventions.

The parallels between the events described by the Panel and the genocide of Bosnian muslims in Srebrenica are striking. Srebrenica was a designated a safe haven (by the UN), encouraging civilians to concentrate there, and thereby making the mass killings possible. In Sri Lanka, the Panel found that the "government shelled on a large scale in three consecutive No Fire Zones, where it had encouraged the civilian population to concentrate, even after indicating it would cease the use of heavy weapons ..it shelled the United Nations hub, food distribution lines and near the ICRC ships that were coming to pick up the wounded.. It shelled despite its knowledge of the impact, provided by its own intelligence systems and through notification by the United Nations, the ICRC and others. Most civilian casualties in the final phase of the war were caused by government shelling"

The ICTY found that the Srebrenica was chosen for its cataclysmic destruction because of its strategic significance for the viability of the Bosnian state: "capture and ethnic purification of Srebrenica would therefore severely undermine the military efforts of the Bosnian Muslim state to ensure its viability." Crucially, the ICTY found that Serbian forces decided "the elimination of the Muslim population of Srebrenica .. would serve as a potent example to all Bosnian Muslims of their vulnerability and defenselessness in the face of Serb military forces."

Similarly, the Vanni region had strong strategic and symbolic significance for the de-facto Tamil state. In exterminating the Vanni population, GoSL sought to deal the Tamil people such a traumatizing blow that they would no longer challenge Sinhala dominance of the entire island.

While Sri Lanka may have adopted the modalities of the genocide in Srebrenica, the civilian deaths were an order of magnitude greater for a similarly sized population.

The report says of GoSL's attitude towards the Tamils: "By denying that tens of thousands of lives were lost in the Vanni, the Government sends the message that the lives [of Tamils civilians]…were of no value to the society". This observation reflects the Buddhist supremacist ideology of the main Sri Lankan religious book, the Mahavamsa, which describes the killing of thousands of Tamil lives as worth less than the lives of one and half 'believers'.

As to the institutionalised racism that is a precondition and enabler of genocides the Panel noted "political, social and economic exclusion based on ethnicity" and highlighted the mono-ethnic nature of the army that carried out the extermination and persecution of the ethnic Tamil population of the Vanni. The Panel characterises Sri Lanka's history as one where 'Sinhala Buddhist nationalism gained traction, asserting a privileged place for the Sinhalese as protectors of Sri Lanka, as the sacred home of Buddhism'.

The report finds that the persecution of the Tamil population was not only a feature of (overt) war. Abuse continued in the time of 'peace' that followed. It details continuing post-conflict abuse of the Tamil survivors including deprivation of liberty amid inhumane conditions, "execution, disappearances, and sexual violence." in internment camps. The report describes the GoSL's detainment and torture of civilians with suspected LTTE links, doctors, and United Nations staff members, with testimonies to "sounds of beating and screaming…heard from the interrogation tents." The Panel refers to "camp conditions that created an enabling environment for gender based violence."

The Genocide Convention defines genocide as acts committed with the intent to destroy in whole or in substantive part a specific national or ethnic group. It is clear that the UN report strongly supports the assertion that GoSL committed genocide.

TAG calls on UN member governments, particularly the Human Rights and Security Councils to redress their contribution to the crimes described by the UN report.

The Convention obligation to prevent and punish genocide is not a matter of choice or political calculation but one of binding law.

Genocides do not happen outside of historical context. They occur in repetitive patterns. Genocide of the Tamil people had already happened in Sri Lanka in July 1983. Now the UN report describes credible evidence of genocide in 2009.

TAG urges UN member governments to recognise the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka and to appoint an international Tribunal to investigate the perpetrators. We appeal to leading genocide experts, jurists, and civil society organizations to support our call.

Based on the Panel's findings on the failure of the UN and noting the conflict of interest where UN staff have been linked to war crimes in Sri Lanka, TAG calls on the Secretary General to set up a review of UN actions by a panel of independent jurists with no present or prior relationship to the United Nations.

In announcing the results, NLN CEO Dr. Beverly Malone, pointed out that while a core strength of the Annual Survey is its long-term trend data, new analyses are also introduced to capture and assess emerging issues. The recent release of the IOM “Future of Nursing” report represented such an opportunity.

Expanding on this juxtaposition, League president Cathleen Shultz, PhD, RN, CNE, FAAN, said, "The NLN survey sheds light on what the nursing community must do to respond to the report's call for increasing workforce diversity and achieving higher levels of education and training. A primary goal of our data analysis is understanding trends in nursing program admissions and framing those trends within the broader context of systemic change in health care and higher education."

Findings of the NLN Annual Survey of Schools of Nursing 2009-1010 include:

Despite making tremendous strides toward increasing the diversity of students entering the field of nursing over the past two decades, Hispanics remain underrepresented among prelicensure RN students.
There continues to be great competition for entry into nursing education programs as well as a great deal of unmet demand.
For basic programs, lack of clinical placement opportunities continue to constrain expansion.
Lack of faculty is key obstacle to expanding access to postlicensure programs
A shortage of faculty continues to be the cited most frequently as the main obstacle to expansion by RN-to-BSN and doctoral programs

"The data from the survey help point the way forward for the NLN and the nursing community," concluded Dr. Shultz. "We must recruit a more diverse student body into the nation's nursing education programs and find new ways to facilitate transitions between entry-level and postlicensure degree programs thereby bringing more nurses with advanced degrees into faculty roles."
