eBay Sells 12,000 iPad 2s in First Two Weeks Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:48 PM PDT We all know that it’s currently nearly impossible to get Apple’s iPad 2 through any standard retail store. Best Buy, Target, Walmart and the Apple Stores continue to see demand easily outstrip the few dozen iPads that trickle in each day. If you hate the wait and want to land an iPad 2 faster, one option you have is to pay a premium and buy it on eBay. The online marketplace was a hotbed of activity last year when the original iPad was released. This year is no different with thousands of sellers hawking iPad 2s at exorbitant prices to customers. So are people really willing to pay the premium prices sellers are charging on eBay? Lucky for us, eBay just released their iPad 2 sales numbers for the past two weeks and the answer is a resounding yes. Nearly 12,000 iPads were sold on eBay within the first two weeks of the iPad 2 ‘s launch. The report shows that unlike last year, 65% of iPad 2s were sold here in the US vs only 35% for the original iPad. The most popular model was the 16GB WiFi iPad 2 which represents 30% of all iPad 2 sales on eBay. The 64GB 3G and the 32GB WiFi models were the second and third most popular models sold on eBay with a respective 23% and 17% of sales. Customers don’t seem to mind the premium pricing and are happy to pay in order to secure a new iPad 2. The 16GB WiFi iPad averaged a premium of $198 above the normal retail price while the 64GB WiFi sold for a $264 premium. The 64GB 3G model had the biggest premium. The average price on eBay is $1,233 ; nearly a 50% premium over the standard retail price of $829. John Locke would be tickled pink to see the rules of supply and demand in action with all of the iPad 2 sales on eBay. [via cnet] » Related posts:

Goodbye, First Generation iPad… Posted: 31 Mar 2011 02:39 PM PDT
Earlier today, the WiFi-only model was removed from the Apple online store, and as of the moment this post was written, only the 3G model was still available for purchase. The 3G model should eventually be removed from the store as well, as Apple will most likely run out of units within the next couple of days.
Apple online store – Clearance section The launch of the first generation iPad was an incredible success story for Apple, as the company managed to sell a whopping 300,000 units on April 3, 2010 – the first day it hit store shelves in the U.S. A month later, Apple had sold more than a million units, and demand for the device remained extremely high until the iPad 2 was announced on March 11, 2011. As of last month, Apple sold more than 15 million first generation iPads worldwide. Its successor, the iPad 2, already proved to be an immense success as well, as weeks after its launch, the new tablet is still almost impossible to find – Apple is unable to produce enough tablets to meet the overwhelming demand. Next-Gen iPad to Come with 3D Cameras? Posted: 31 Mar 2011 01:04 PM PDT
Late last year, Apple filed a new patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, called “Systems and Methods for an Imaging System Using Multiple Image Sensors.” The application, uncovered by AppleInsider earlier today, shows that Apple is working on ways to bring 3D cameras to its mobile devices, to allow iOS devices users to take 3D pictures and movies.
The concept isn’t new, as after all, the Nintendo 3DS can already take 3D pictures, but so far, most 3D imaging systems never managed to produce images of great quality, as they mostly rely on software tricks such as edge-detection to create 3D images. Instead, Apple’s plan is to use a hardware-based solution that would combine a depth sensor to a pair of cameras, to better estimate the distance between the objects on the picture, and produce extremely accurate results. Also worth noting, if Apple were to move forward with the concept, the next generation iPad could potentially come with a 3D display, similar to the one used in the Nintendo 3DS, albeit much larger. MLB iPad/iPhone App Kicks Off Season with One-Month Free Trial Posted: 31 Mar 2011 12:40 PM PDT The Major League Baseball (MLB) season officially kicks off today with 6 games. Celebrating the start of the season, MLB has released a new update for their MLB At Bat application. The new update brings several features that you should take advantage of, especially the ability to watch all out-of-market games live on your iPad FREE of charge during the month of April. This is a very good deal for baseball and sport fans in general. Usually, you only get access to MLB live games with a MLB.tv subscription and by purchasing the iPad or iPhone apps. In early March, MLB and the NBA started bringing live game streaming to your home via the Apple TV as part of the iOS 4.3 update. Now, MLB has partnered with Volvo to sponsor a FREE trial that brings live streaming games for all MLB At Bat application owners. This is a good move to lure in potential subscribers that may have been thinking about whether or not to purchase the MLB.tv subscription. As part of the new update, MLB has also added some interesting new features. An enhanced, re-designed Gameday pitch-by-pitch feature that includes realistic ballpark renderings from all 30 MLB parks. The ball parks images look great. In addition, you get access to in-progress video clips, black-out games are included, and get full access to watch previous 2011 season games on-demand. If you own the iPhone application, you get social features like check-ins, maps of stadiums and notifications of special deals. If you’re a baseball fan, or a sports fan in general, this is a good chance to try the new MLB At Bat application on your iPad or brand new iPad 2. A great way to catch some real baseball live action for FREE during the month of April. » Related posts:

Apple to Absorb Cost Increases from Japanese Suppliers Posted: 31 Mar 2011 08:36 AM PDT
According to Taiwanese website DigiTimes, Apple has agreed to absorb additional costs incurred by its iPad 2 component vendors as they attempt to get their products to Apple. This gesture will help Japanese suppliers maintain their profit margins and will likely put Apple at the top of the supply list ahead of other tablet manufacturers who don’t absorb the price increase.
Although Japan’s power brownout policy is seriously affecting the operations of Japan-based upstream component makers, causing related upstream components to see price rises, since Apple has agreed to absorb all the additional costs in exchange for smooth shipments, Apple’s upstream component suppliers, which purchase components from Japan, are expected to see their profitability undamaged in the short term, according to sources from upstream component makers. Thanks to the sheer number of iPads and iPhones Apple sells, it already has a huge advantage over iPad 2 competitors who are not able to secure the same component volume discounts. Apple’s ability to work with vendors struck by the disasters in Japan should allow the company to continue producing iPad 2 at the perviously projected volumes. Apple is expected to ship four million iPad’s per month in the second quarter. According to DigiTimes’ sources, inventory levels at upstream Japanese suppliers should last through May but could become an issue beginning in June. The disaster in Japan has caused many electronics manufacturers to scramble as they look to secure critical parts from memory chips to battery components. IHS iSuppli predicted shortly after the earthquake and tsunami that shortages may become an issue as a result of the current crisis in Japan. "The aftermath of the Japanese earthquake may cause logistical disruptions and supply shortages in Apple Inc.'s iPad 2, which employs several components manufactured in the disaster-stricken country—including a hard-to-replace electronic compass, the battery and possibly the advanced technology glass in the display," IHS iSuppli research indicates. The lasting effects of the Japanese disaster should become evident over the coming months and Apple may share some of their concerns during their next quarterly earnings call on April 20, 2011. » Related posts:
