This interactive new site allows customers to design personalized jackets for their iPad, iPad 2, eReader or other tablet device.  Easy-to-navigate design tools let you import your own photos or select from a vast gallery of artwork by well-known artists from around the world.

Artwork options include choices like:

Totes m ‘Notes – A Great Note-Taking Tool for iPad – App Review

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 02:24 PM PDT

Hello iPad enthusiasts, this is Colin signing on to the PadGadget page!

Although the iPad has faced its share of criticisms in the word processing department, Totes m’Notes is not your standard, yellow paper notes app. Taking detailed notes is important no matter what your profession, and with the combination of type and draw Totes m' Notes makes that possible. Using the app is completely intuitive like most good iPad apps, and it takes very little time to get used to the layout of all the controls.

On the main screen the “shelf” can house a series of two sided note folders, one for each subject or project. These folders are customizable enough to stay easily organized without having to open each one. After creating a new folder and choosing the skin, stickers (more please!), and labeling, it is time to customize your notes.

After tapping the “customize” tab you discover yourself in a world of choices. Find yourself needing graph paper? No problem. Just want to type? Lined paper it is. Copying down a graph is as easy as selecting the pen or pencil and going to town. Even the fonts are easy to change to your preferences. Additionally, if you need to do some quick calculations, the widget tab is right at your fingertips boasting both a calculator and unit converter within the app itself.

The truly unique aspect of Totes m' Notes however, is the ability to share your notes with classmates or colleagues who weren't there to take their own. There are several options for sharing and none of them require a registration process. The email option doesn't close the app, and allows users to send their notes right in the body of the message rather than as an attachment. Facebook is another possibility, where posting notes to your wall is only a tap away.

What I liked: The ability to draw is highly valuable for those situations that you just wish you could write something instead of type it. I used the app in my physics class and the switch from taking notes to writing equations was seamless. Also, rather than having to dig out my calculator, I was the first to answer questions by using the widget tab (extra credit!).

What I didn't like: I think the erase feature for stickers and drawings should be a bit more accessible as it was difficult to find.

To buy or not to buy: If you are serious about using your iPad in note-taking situations, professionally or academically, absolutely buy Totes m' Notes. $2.99 is a small price to pay for a portable, accessible method of getting many more words per minute, maintaining the ability to sketch, and saving your writing hand for another day.

  • App Name: Totes m ‘Notes
  • Version Reviewed: 1.0
  • Category: Productivity
  • Developer: The Incredible Minotaurs
  • Price: $2.99

Get Rid of those iPad Smudges with Nu-Screen HD

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 01:56 PM PDT

Trying to figure out a way to get rid of those iPad smudges? Everyone with a tablet and fancy smartphone has had to deal with finger prints and plenty of smudges.

The dirty screen may not be as noticeable when using your device in areas with soft indoor lighting, but as soon as you walk into bright light that beautiful smudged covered screen becomes very obvious. However, there is a new option for you in the market, the Nu-Screen HD polish.

The Nu-Screen HD is a display screen polish available in a small tube, that is specially formulated for mobile electronic devices.

When applied, the Nu-Screen HD creates a non-greasy coating that makes it easier to clean smudges. It also leaves a slippery surface that will minimize those unwanted finger prints left from your body oils.

Earlier today, I showed the product to one of my friends. One question that popped real quick – “Is this a non-toxic product?”. According to Nu-Screen, the product does not contain any petroleum ingredients and has been tested and approved to be a non-toxic product.

You can use the Nu-Screen HD with your iPad, iPhone, as well as BlackBerrys, and Android-powered devices.

You can order the Nu-Screen HD for $19.95 directly from the company’s website.

New US Lithium Battery Legislation to Save Apple Millions

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 12:58 PM PDT

Bloomberg reports that the US House of Representatives has approved legislation that will save Apple and other consumer electronics companies over $1.13 billion in hazardous material related costs in the first year it is enacted.

The House legislation is in contrast to changes President Obama’s administration had been pushing that would classify lithium batteries as hazardous material.  The administration’s proposed changes would have required electronics companies to improve the way lithium batteries are packaged, transported and handled.  Those same changes would have also cost companies over $1 billion.

With lithium batteries prevalent in Apple’s iPad, iPhone and laptop computers, the changes would result in millions of dollars in additional shipping and handling fees for the Cupertino company.  The Transportation Department has been pushing for tighter regulation around lithium batteries as they can short circuit, overheat and catch fire while being transported.

The risk of fires is very real and can be deadly.  Just last year a UPS 747 carrying lithium batteries crashed near Dubai after the batteries caught fire while the plane was in midair.  The resulting fire caused thick smoke to fill the cockpit, obscuring the pilots sight and ultimately causing the pilots to overshoot the runway and crash, killing both pilots on board.

Lithium-ion batteries burn extremely hot at over 1,100°F.  This temperature is near the melting point of aluminum (1,200°F), the main material used in the construction of modern aircraft.  Lithium-metal batteries burn even hotter, reaching temperatures of over 4,000°F, capable of melting through an aircraft and causing catastrophic damage.

The House legislation will now be reconciled in a House-Senate conference committee to draft a final Bill for the President’s signature later this year.

3G Connection Issues on Verizon iPad 2?

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 08:51 AM PDT

A growing discussion over at Apple’s support forum seems to indicate that several iPad 2 owners are experiencing issues with the Verizon version of the tablet. 3G connectivity problems seem to happen randomly, but in one specific case easy to reproduce, the tablet simply refuses to connect to Verizon’s network.

The issue seems to be triggered by users who turn off the 3G connection of their iPad 2 via the Settings app, while on a plane, for instance. Once the 3G connection of the tablet is enabled again, the iPad 2 seems to be unable to detect Verizon’s network, and can take up to 5 minutes to finally reconnect to 3G. In some extreme cases, the iPad 2 will not reconnect at all, and will display the dreaded “Searching…” message on the top corner of the screen instead.

In this case, the only way to get the iPad 2 to reconnect is to reboot the device by holding both Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously for more than 10 seconds – a painful process to get the device back online.

Some comments from disgruntled users on Apple’s forum:

When I try to connect to the cellular data it just says iPad or Searching in the top of the screen. It did work last night. If I do a hard reset I can get it to work. Switching Airplane mode on and off to reset the modem does NOT work. Anyone have any ideas?

Easy way to duplicate: turn off cellular, then reboot normally. 3G will not come back regardless if switched on or off. Only way to turn back on is to 1) switch cellular back to ‘on’ and 2) reboot. All time consuming… Tried restoring, didn’t help……

On my issue, when 3G is turned off followed by unit, it doesn’t come back regardless of toggle but CAN comeback if you leave it in the on switch, then reboot

At this stage, it’s unclear whether all Verizon-compatible iPad 2s are affected by the problem, or only a subset. Some potentially good news though: iOS 4.3.2 should be released soon, and will address “bugs that have affected users.” With some luck, the 3G connectivity bug will be squashed by this new release.

Plex’s Major iOS Update Makes It A Complete Media Solution

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 08:02 AM PDT

Popular Mac and PC Media Center application, Plex, has released a major update to its iOS application that makes the cross-platform media center a great download for your iOS devices.

Make sure you check out Plex because the application is a great way to stream your media files, search your devices and online media storage, find movie collections, and enjoy it all on your iPad, iPhone or iPod devices.

In case you’re not familiar with Plex, it's a media center application that allows you to use your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch to browse and play your media (video, photos and music) using the Plex Media Server installed on your Mac or PC. You can also view online media from a variety of sources, and if you have iTunes, iPhoto, or Aperture installed you can also stream the content to your mobile devices. In addition, the Plex app can also work as a full-featured remote for the Plex Media Center application and support a variety of codecs.

The desktop application allows you to play your media files locally on your computer without using a mobile client. You can customize your themes, connect to online streaming services from Vimeo, Youtube, BBC, CNN, Hulu, Apple and many more.

The new iOS Plex update brings major feature additions that will make your media experience quite good.

  • An improved look and feel with enhancements for the iPad: The developer has added some beautiful grid views. The Remote interface has been updated on the iPad with the addition of new buttons, and landscape support.
  • Local image caching for faster browsing: In the previous version of Plex, some folks complained about not been able to browse and search for web content quickly enough. The new update has added local image caching which has certainly helped with faster browsing, especially over a 3G connection.
  • TV Out support: Now you can watch all your media on the big screen. The application also supports subtitle and audio stream selection with support for SSA, SRT, and SMI subtitles.
  • AirPlay integration: The developer has implemented an experimental version on the new update. You can activate the experimental AirPlay integration via the Preferences setting to stream everything to your Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible speaker. However, keep in mind the feature has some issues when resuming videos over AirPlay. We hope the developer provides a fix quickly.
  • Direct Streaming and Direct Play support: With the new update there is no doubt that your media files play much faster and look better. The main reason for that is that Plex revamped their transcoding tecniques. The Direct Streaming feature includes an improved H.264 algorithm that makes images look way better on the iPad, iPhone and other mobile devices. The Direct Play support ensures that you can play video files without requiring any actual conversion.
  • Unified channels view for plug-in management and Universal search: These features allow you to find media across all your media servers and on the Internet. The developer leverages VideoSurf to allow you to search for content on your servers and online. For example, when you do a content search, Plex  will display results for videos and music from your local servers, and from online services like Vimeo and Youtube.
  • Other features allow you to do multiple things: like using the Headphone button to play/pause, and the photo browser displays thumbnails instead of default images.

There is no doubt that Plex is a powerful media center and mobile application for your iOS devices. The application will allow you to experience your media in a wonderful way. The Plex iOS application is available to download for $4.99.
