Olin Business School Research Finds Home Field Advantage in Negotiations

Organizational behavior professor discusses findings of study on negotiations.

Planning to negotiate a raise? Try not to discuss it with the boss in his or her office, suggests a new study by an organizational behavior expert at Washington University in St. Louis.

"Parties who negotiate on their home field can be expected to claim between 60 percent and 160 percent more value than the visiting party," says Markus Baer, PhD, assistant professor of organizational behavior at Olin Business School.

Baer's latest study, "Location in Negotiation: Is There a Home Field Advantage?" is among the first to empirically demonstrate that there is indeed a home-field advantage in negotiation. It appears in the March edition of the journal Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes.

Baer and his research partner, Graham Brown, PhD, of the University of British Columbia, set out to test the generally accepted theory that a home-field advantage exists, not only in sports but also in business negotiations.

They found that it does, but that the confidence of the person entering the negotiation as visitor can go a long way in evening the playing field.

"There was surprisingly little systemic research examining whether location matters in negotiation," Baer says. "And no study explains why it would matter. Does a person in their own environment perform better, or does a visitor to their office perform worse? As a result, home field advantage remains one of the least understood phenomena in negotiation."

Baer and Graham set up a series of three experiments.

In the first, students assumed the status of "resident" and were taken to a private office. They were given 20 minutes to make the office their own by choosing a chair, putting their name outside the office, choosing posters to put up, writing their schedule on a board and logging into a computer to check their email. They were also given a key to the office.

They were then told they would be negotiating with a fellow student over the price of a pound of coffee.

Participants assuming the role of a "visitor" were told that they would be negotiating with a fellow student who had an office because he or she was entering data for a professor in the department thus leading them to believe that the "resident" party had a permanent claim to the office.

The experiment showed that residents clearly outperformed visitors. By creating a third condition—a "neutral party" who was led to believe that the resident party did not have a permanent claim to the office but just happened to have arrived a little earlier—the authors were able to also show that the home-field advantage may be due both to a resident advantage and a visitor disadvantage. That is, residents did better than a neutral party, who, in turn, outperformed visitors.

The second experiment examined the role of confidence in explaining exactly why the home turf advantage arises. It was designed exactly as the first, however before the negotiation, participants took a questionnaire designed to measure confidence.

This experiment showed that the advantage of residents over visitors in distributive negotiations can at least partly be explained by the different levels of confidence residents and visitors are likely to have from knowing that they will be negotiating on their home field or on someone else's territory.

In the final experiment, visitors' confidence levels were manipulated by having students provide answers to a fake assessment. They were told that based on the assessment, their negotiating skills were quite high and they should do well in the negotiation.

The results of the experiment showed that boosting visitor's confidence levels before the negotiation can help to eliminate the home field advantage.

"Our findings suggest that location is an important factor to consider when examining the forces shaping outcomes of distributive negotiations and, therefore, should be incorporated into existing approaches to negotiation," Baer writes in the paper.

However, Baer's research suggests one way of overcoming home-field advantage if the location of a negotiation cannot be changed.

"Confidence plays a critical role in any negotiation, regardless of where it takes place," Baer says. "Anything a person entering a negotiation can do to boost his or her confidence is a good thing. Something as simple as participating in negotiation training may work to minimize the disadvantage of negotiating on someone else's home turf."

The city installed the Invisible Flood Control Wall (IFCW) in response to the 1997 flood in which the sandbags and levees didn't hold, submerging Main Street in four feet of water and causing an estimated $500 million in damage. City officials said they opted for the IFCW to preserve the aesthetics of the community, since it is only erected in the event of a flood. The main section of the IFCW that runs along the river in front of the Blue Moose Bar and Grill, Applebee's, and Cabela's, was installed in under 8 hours.

"Obviously, we're very proud to have helped protect the great city of East Grand Forks," said John Fryklund, Director of Marketing for Flood Control America, which is the manufacturer and distributor of the IFCW. "And the city of East Grand Forks can be proud to be protected by a system manufactured entirely in the United States by American workers."

Because of the East Grand Forks project, the IFCW was awarded the "Seven Wonders of Engineering in Minnesota Award for Distinguished Engineering Achievement 2000" by the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers, and was recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Commerce Economic Development Administration as one of its five major "success stories" in the 20th century.

The Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation (CSF) has recently announced a new scholarship created to memorialize a child's battle with several heart complications. Keegan Scot Southers did not beat these complications, but his family wants to remember his strength and courage by offering a scholarship to a student that has fought a similar conflict and won.

Keegan was born July 8, 2009 with his twin, Wyatt. Keegan was a bouncing baby boy that loved to play and laugh with his family. The only thing that made Keegan different was that he was born with Heterotaxy Syndrome, Complete Heart Block and Tetralogy of Fallot. Four days after he was born he received a pacemaker. Eight months later, he was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy and spent time in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital before being placed on the heart transplant list. Although he fought bravely, his little heart couldn't hold out, and he passed away on July 25, 2010.

Keegan's family wants to assist students who have overcome a similar battle in reaching their goals of higher education. To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must show proof that they have been diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease and/or received a heart transplant. Students also must be from the Greater Cincinnati area (within the I-275 loop) with proven financial need. The applicant must be enrolled or planning to enroll as a full time student at a college or university and must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Also required is a complete CSF application, which can be found at http://www.CincinnatiScholarshipFoundation.org with a recommendation letter from a guidance counselor, if currently in high school, or a professor, if currently in college.

"Keegan's family has been through a lot of joy and turmoil in the past few years. Little Keegan was such a gift, strong and courageous through all of his medical visits. He had a zest for life and loved his family. The Southers family is offering hope to those that have lived through the same trials as their son did. The opportunity to continue on to college is such a milestone for each of these young men and women," comments Ned Hertzenberg, CSF President.

The Keegan Scot Southers Memorial Scholarship Fund application is due to the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation by April 30. Board members of the Keegan Scot Southers Memorial Scholarship Fund, with the aid of the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation, will determine the amount and recipient of the scholarship; however, it will be at least $500 per academic year. The video camera is set up to monitor the nest of a pair of bald eagles in Maine's mid-coastal region. This webcam is one of two cameras NextEra currently sponsors that captures the breeding activity of these raptors in real time.

Visitors to BRI's website, http://www.briloon.org, can watch the daily activities of this eagle pair roosting, hatching eggs, and raising its young.

"We are excited to provide this latest webcam, which allows the public a close-up view into the life of these incredible birds," says William Hanson, senior biologist for NextEra.

"We are fortunate to have NextEra's support, without which we would not be able to provide this important tool both for research and education," says David Evers, Ph.D., executive director of BRI.

Breeding bald eagles lay eggs once each year, usually in early spring; the eggs, up to three in a clutch, hatch in about 35 days. The young eagles, called nestlings, learn to fly by three months of age, and can be on their own about a month later.

"Webcams are an important tool to help engage the general public in science and ecology," says Chris DeSorbo, director of BRI's raptor program. "Once people get a glimpse into the daily life and challenges of an eagle nestling, they become more invested in 'their eagles.' For many, that's the nudge that increases their awareness and concern for broader issues facing eagles and other wildlife—like contaminated fisheries and loss of habitat."

Eagles build their nests (which may reach as wide as 10 feet across and weigh up to one-half ton) near the top of large trees, typically close to lakes and rivers. Eagle pairs defend their nests and surrounding area from other eagles. The territory in which NextEra's webcam monitor is located was established in 2001. Through aerial surveys conducted by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, biologists know that eagles nesting in this territory have hatched eight nestlings over the past decade.

The bald eagle is one of the most identifiable birds in North America; it became our national bird in 1782 and since that time has captured the public's imagination as a symbol of freedom and strength. Over the last 230 years, a number of factors have threatened this bird including pesticides, habitat degradation, and shootings; in 1940 the U.S. Congress passed the Bald Eagle Protection Act (which later expanded to include the Golden Eagle). By 1963, the bald eagle was listed as an endangered species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Diligent efforts of wildlife biologists and state and federal wildlife management agencies have enabled these birds to recover; they were removed from the federal endangered species list in 2007, and the Maine state list in 2009.

Installing video cameras to observe the eagles involves cooperation between wildlife biologists and state and federal wildlife agencies. NextEra's eagle webcam program is made possible through partnerships with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and BioDiversity Research Institute.

BRI's wildlife webcam program began in 2003 as a research tool to monitor the nests of the common loon, which at the time was one of the primary bird species being studied at the Institute. One Property Owner Saves Half a Million Gallons of Water

ROTOGreen Releases First Update on Conservation Initiative

It's been one year since North America's #1 plumbing and drain service company kicked off its water conservation program. Roto-Rooter enlisted the help of a property management customer located in Camden, New Jersey to test out a few of the ROTOGreen products and services and track the savings.

"The idea behind ROTOGreen is that we can make it easy for families and businesses to save a significant amount of water and money without changing behaviors," said Roto-Rooter President and COO Rick Arquilla.

The Camden Oaks rental property is a 16 unit apartment building with 17 showers and bathtubs, 17 toilets, 34 sinks and 2 washing machines. The toilets were retrofitted into dual-flush models. Old shower heads were replaced with the latest 1.5 gallon-per-minute models. Bathroom and kitchen sink faucet aerators were swapped out with more restrictive flow models. In a year's time, Camden Oaks has saved a total of 565,000 gallons of water and more than $3,000 as a result of these simple replacements.

"This is an incredible savings for the property management company, which foots the water bill in this case. In regards to investment, it took Roto-Rooter service technicians about a full day's work to install everything and the customer is on target to recover the full investment of parts and labor in less than 18 months," said ROTOGreen representative Paul Abrams. "These retrofits were made to existing fixtures for a fraction of the cost of replacing old toilets and faucets with new models," he added.

If just one apartment complex of similar size in each state underwent the same updates, 28.25 million gallons of water could be saved each year. When broken down, the savings translate to a savings of more than 35,000 gallons and nearly $200 per apartment annually. Additionally, a single man living in a metro Kansas City three bedroom home who participated in the ROTOGreen renovation swapped out two shower heads, three sink faucets and two very old toilets with newer, more efficient EPA WaterSense approved models, cutting his annual water usage by 57 percent.

The judges chose 10 finalists for the Best in Show award, and RFID Journal's editors picked the winner from among them.

Gerry Weber International was chosen for a solution that integrates RFID tags into its product-care labels so clothing items can be tracked from factories to multiple warehouses and on to 200 stores. Royal Caribbean Cruises won for a solution that allows guests to prepay for unlimited soft drinks, and to then serve themselves fountain beverages without having to wait on a service bar line. Argonne National Laboratory was selected for its use of RFID to modernize the management of nuclear materials. And Chris Diorio, Impinj's chairman, co-founder and CTO, was honored for his leadership in the development of EPCglobal's ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) Gen 2 RFID standard.

Intellefex won this year's Best in Show award for its FMR-6000 and HMR-9090 multi-protocol battery-assisted passive (BAP) tags (the TMT-8500 temperature-monitoring tag, the BAT-8300 badge tag, the STT-8000 standard tag and the SMT-8100 tag for objects containing liquids and metals), as well as its interrogators. In addition, RFID Journal introduced a new award this year to recognize the use of RFID technology to improve the environment, increase recycling or enhance sustainability; this award went to Mission Foods, for an RFID solution enabling the elimination of disposable corrugated boxes, thereby reducing the company's solid waste stream by 98 percent.

Christ Church of Greenwich will present a seven-day exhibition of four to five dozen works of art by the artists of Stamford's Laurel House, seen for the first time. Laurel House provides resources and creates opportunities for people living with mental illness to lead productive lives in their communities. Such artists as Laurel House members Robert Gilroy, Georgia Little, and Edward E. McCormick, Jr. have been formally trained, and their creations will be part of the Christ Church exhibit.

Since 1984, Laurel House (http://www.laurelhouse.net) has operated in Stamford, Connecticut, using a self help approach. This method is holistic and focuses on the individual strengths of people with mental illness to lead productive, meaningful and rewarding lives in their communities. The emphasis at Laurel House is on recovery.

Although more than four-fifths of Laurel House members have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or major depression, they believe that people can and do recover from the worst effects of serious mental illness. Their symptoms can lead to unemployment, disrupted education, homelessness, loss of social ties, and a lifelong reliance on medication. In addition, they experience a soul-crushing loss of self-esteem, and they often suffer from apathy and despair.
