Real Racing 2 HD: the First iPad 2 Game to Output in 1080p

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 03:14 PM PDT

Firemint today announced that its next major update to Real Racing 2 HD will bring full 1080p-out support for the iPad 2.

Although the iPad 2 itself only displays video in 1024×768 at the highest, with the use of the iPad HDMI adapter, it can output 1920×1080 video to a monitor or television that supports 1080p, which is exactly what Real Racing 2 HD will do.

Firemint did not say exactly when this update will be released– just that it's coming in the "next major update." Color us excited for this high resolution treat!

Real Racing 2 HD is one of the most impressive racing titles on Apple's iOS. It features a 10-hour single-player campaign and gorgeous 3D visuals. The game has an average rating of 4.5 stars on the App Store and nearly 1,000 user reviews, while the iPhone version of the game garnished an Editor’s Choice Award right here on 148Apps. You can download it for $6.99.

Filth Fair Offers Grimy Word Puzzles

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 11:30 AM PDT

From publisher Wellcome Trust and developer Toytek comes Filth Fair, a word-based puzzle game for the iPhone and iPad.

The Filth Fair has you select objects from a painting and then solve a word puzzle based on that object. As the game’s title suggests, the main theme here is filth, so each word has something to do with dirtiness, evil, ill morals or other general nastiness. The painting consists of a fair ground covered with animals, such as bears, elephants, pigs, cows and iconic characters, such as Adam and Eve. All together, there are over 331 different words to find, since each object in the game has more than one word associated with it.

The game offers help in the form of a cryptic clue and hint. You can also earn “Wild Stars” which reveal hidden letters. As you play and successfully solve the jigsaw word puzzles, you’ll earn medals and eventually the grand trophy.

Thus far, the game is enjoying positive user reviews – with an average rating of 4 stars on the App Store.

You can download and play The Filth Fair for free on the iTunes App Store.

Super Stack Attack Review

iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Super Stack Attack offers simple but enjoyable physics-based fun.

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Super Stack Attack matches the definition of casual gaming to a tee. A series of challenges with success purely measured by your satisfaction rather than achievements or leaderboards awaits. It’s just the kind of game to play when you’ve got five minutes spare and you want to feel like you’ve achieved something.

The idea is simple. See those cutesy cartoon blocks in the screenshots? You have to stack them up to a set number before progressing to the next level. It’s spectacularly simple but that’s what makes it so easy to play. Each level starts with one block at the bottom of the screen and a moving crane suspending another block in the air above it. All you do is tap the screen at the moment you want to drop the block and it lands. The trick is to ensure the block lands carefully on the existing tower. This is simple at first as the crane moves slowly and the tower is stationary. Later stages however are faster. The tower itself moves around and you have to place an increasing number of blocks before moving onto the next stage.

It’s still simple of course but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The physics engine works well, feeling natural throughout. Besides the challenge mode, there’s an endless mode which can get really rather tough.

That’s about all there is to Super Stack Attack but that’s also all you need. It’s a game that knows it doesn’t need to be anything clever. Just the simple reverse Jenga style gameplay means you’ll happily keep at it. Just for the sake of knowing you mastered the game. Thanks to the physics engine, each game will feel slightly different making it fun to return to. Simple but fun, the kind of game that’s nice to have on standby.

Pah!: A Game That Will Make You Shout. Literally.

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Some people may complain about virtual controls not having the same kind of tactile feel as real controls. If these people would play Pah!, they might never complain again. Pah! is a relatively basic space shooter – you control a ship that fires lasers at asteroids in its way, getting points for each one it shoots down. If you hit an asteroid, you lose a life; lose 3 lives and it’s game over. Simple concept repeated time and time again. But that’s not what makes Pah! so unique.

You see, Pah! is controlled exclusively through your voice – you shout “Ahhhhh!” to move your ship upwards, and shout “Pah!” to fire. The ‘voice recognition’ is a little bit tricky – generally, you’ll be making your own “ah” type sounds that work for you, but generally, you can’t move upwards without firing, although considering your only goal is to shoot asteroids in your way, you don’t really have a lot to worry about if you fire shots you didn’t intend to. And considering that the game does generally fire whenever you make a sound, you’re probably better off. You’ll also want to play in an environment with no background noise, lest a sudden noise send you flying into an asteroid unexpectedly.

I will warn you, this game will be very weird to play in public – even just playing it in the comfort and privacy of my own home left me feeling kind of weird. I mean, no one should be making the kinds of weird “ahhhh” and “pahs” sounds I was making unless a trained medical professional is examining you. This is definitely not a game for playing on public transportation, unless you want people to think you’re crazy – or if you are crazy and so desperately need help. This game is not really significant or meaningful in any way, but it is kind of original, and ludicrous enough to be fun. Plus, it supports the Retina Display and Game Center, so even a silly little app like this can be technically sound. Go figure.

Get Outta My Galaxy! Review

Get Outta My Galaxy is slow to get going but turns into a very enjoyable 3D adventure game

Developer: Ookoohko Oy
Price: $0.99

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.69 out of 5 stars

The comparisons to Super Mario Galaxy are impossible to avoid and in itself is a huge compliment for a game that credits itself as being made by three guys from Finland (and a little help from their friends). Get Outta My Galaxy deserves this though. While the concept has had to be understandably scaled back, the basic core is still there and it makes for a great game. Even more so when you bear in mind it costs a mere $.99 to play.

You play Waka, a fairly wacky looking creature quietly minding his own business in space until the devious Wikus come along and start infringing upon his territory. It’s down to you to help Waka slap the Wikus off the planet (literally) and back into space.

The general appearance of Get Outta My Galaxy is pretty impressive. Visuals are attractive and remind you just how much potential the iOS devices have. On my iPhone 4, I didn’t see any slowdown and I was pleasantly surprised by the kind of graphics I’d have expected on a home console only a few years ago. While planets do appear pretty simplistic at first, with a very simple learning curve to start, you grow to love it once you hit the second planet or so.

The control scheme however is one that I couldn’t entirely get on board with. Using tilt based controls rather than a virtual d-pad, you’re able to see more of what’s happening on screen, but the controls do feel hyper sensitive. While there are a few options for playing style in order to adjust the tilt mechanism, I didn’t really find any of them ideal, which was frustrating.

Controls aside however, Get Outta My Galaxy is a great experience. It might take a little while to get going as it starts out very easy, but once you get into it, it’s apparant just how much the world of Waka has to offer. Later levels, involving the likes of switch based puzzles and mazes to navigate, are particularly satisfying.

It’s a game that could get away with being more expensive and still be worth playing so at less than a dollar, Get Outta My Galaxy is near unmissable. You won’t be sorry.

Grim Joggers Gets More Brutal With New Alien Aerobics Level

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:30 AM PDT

Grim Joggers, the endless running game from Finnish developer 10tons that has you controlling a group of 15 joggers through a variety of non-typical jogging environments, has gotten its second major content update since its release. The new level, entitled Alien Aerobics, has you running through a strange alien environment, somewhat resembling the first level of the classic NES and arcade game Contra. You not only have alien enemies to avoid, but you also have new teleporters that can be a help or a hindrance on your quest to lead your jogging group as far as you can. The app, still supports Game Center and comes with universal app support, of course. 10tons also claims that it’s the most brutal endless running game on the App Store, but I don’t know – face planting into a billboard in Canabalt is pretty brutal in and of itself. If you’re interested in judging its potential brutality for yourself (we gave the initial release of the app 4 stars), the app is currently available for $1.99.

Create your own techno beats on the go.

iPhone Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

While music creation apps are not a new idea on iOS and there have been many, the genre is quickly evolving and becoming increasingly more complex and fully featured. This is indeed the case with LoopMash from Steinberg Media Technologies.

LoopMash is not a simple or easy app to use — it is not designed to be easily picked up and played with by just anyone with a passive interest in producing their own beats. Rather, it is a deep and potentially powerful music creation tool that lets you create your own techno-style music on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. In fact, the app is actually based on a tool within Cubase, an incredibly popular music creation program.

The app is overflowing with options and features, and thanks to its innovative interface, the process is mostly hassle-free — even on a device with very little screen real estate, like the iPhone. With LoopMash, you can blend up to four two-bar loops together by tweaking different audio elements, beats and tunes. There are over 40 presets and 240 loops to choose from, with a healthy variety of styles ranging from techno to electronica. There are so many options it's overwhelming at first. You can do so much with this app.

Despite the impressive number of options there are when it comes to tweaking audio, LoopMash falls short in what I think would be an obvious area. There's no way to share your musical creations with anyone. The app lacks social network integration, which so many other apps these days support. You can't even export your creations to iTunes. Some baffling shortcomings, really, considering the productions values of the app.

Also, for as complex as LoopMash is, it would be nice if the app itself came with a more helpful tutorial of some kind. Yes, you can find such a tutorial online, but it really should be accessible within the app.

That noted, LoopMash is still a comprehensive and powerful tool. I do not have much experience when it comes to software like this and it is not something that I personally would finding myself using a lot. Frankly, I found the app to be overwhelming because of my lack of a music/mixing background. However, it is still a well-designed, useful tool for anyone looking to pump out their own beats.
