Nintendo 3DS: Best UK price roundup

The launch of Nintendo's 3DS is almost upon us; with many retailers opening at midnight so eager gaming fans will be able to get their hands on the device. We thought we would round up some prices of the device in the UK.

The cheapest place to buy the 3DS seems to be online with retailers like Amazon, and Asda offering it for £187. Morrison's are also pricing it £187 at selected stores and expected long queues for it. If you decide to go into Asda you can pick one up for £197 and again expect some long queues.

If you want to buy a game with your 3DS, than Tesco could be your best bet as they are offering you the chance to pick one up for £175. This price is on condition you purchase any 3DS game, or it is £197 when purchased separately. Sainsbury’s are offering a bonus of 1000 nectar points if you preorder online for £199.99.

If you have an old DS console and want rid of it, Argos or Game could be a good choice. Game is advertising it for less than half price when you trade in a DSi XL. No exact price is given and some stores are opening at midnight which you can find here.

Argos have a range of prices depending on what DS you want to trade, if you have an DSi XL you can get a 3DS for £109.99, for a DSi its £149.99, and a DS Lite its £164.99. If you know of anywhere cheaper let us know via comments below.

Where will you be getting the 3DS?

Developers have made massive improvements to the Starcraft 2 Editor, some of which include new trigger actions and functions being added, improved custom map loading times custom maps. The list seems endless and the improvements will need to be known by all hardcore Starcraft 2 fans so it is well worth checking out the entire list.

New iPhone 5 power consumption, 4G LTE battery issues

New iPhone 5 power consumption, 4G LTE battery issues

With so many rumors about the 5th-generation iPhone going around we still do not know much, which means that Apple are doing there job well when it comes to its secrets. One issue that we would all like answered with the new iPhone 5 is its power consumption. The reason why this is more important than ever is if Apple decides to offer 4G LTE, and we all know that there could be battery issues, as there are with other smartphones on the market.

2011 looks to be the year for 4G/LTE, but so far there have not been that many handsets – although we are only in the third month of the year. You can be certain that Motorola, HTC and Samsung will all be bringing more 4G handsets to the market, but there is still no word if Apple will do the same.

The iPhone has never been a handset that has offered a good battery life, and it could be this what would persuade Apple not to peruse 4G this year. However, with recent rumors that Apple has been working on Liquidmetal things could be about to change. If this is true, then it is said that the iPhone 5 could have a standby time of 30 days.

Apple might not be able to get Liquidmetal in time, and if this is the case, then how long would their standard battery last using 4G – not long if we look at the performance of current 4G handsets on the market.

We still believe that Apple will not offer a 4G/LTE handset this year, yes they might be able to offer improved battery performance, but we are still not certain that the infrastructure is there yet with the carriers.

Apple AirPlay Video Streaming: Licensing would mean HDTV integration

Apple AirPlay Video Streaming: Licensing would mean HDTV integration

Having previously brought you news of the various manufacturers taking advantage of Apple's AirPlay, it seems the company plan on developing the feature so it can stream video and not just audio. This could see a development of a HDTV with integrated AirPlay produced.

Although there is nothing official as of yet, Bloomberg were able to receive news from a couple of trusted sources. The sources have revealed that Apple intend to take their AirPlay to the next level. Until now the feature has only been providing companies with audio streaming for their devices although there is increasing demand for video to be included also.

According to the sources it is just a matter of licensing before Apple can enable the already embedded technology. Without the license to stream video the protocol which it already has will not be allowed.

With the technology enabled companies will be able to develop new electronic devices that can use AirPlay to stream video content such as TV shows or movies, which is why a HDTV with AirPlay integration seems imminent.

Although no time table has been set so far it is thought that CEDIA 2011 could be the time when Apple launches the AirPlay video streaming integration. What do you think of this news? Would you use AirPlay for streaming video content to your device? Let us know in the comments below.

Drive First: Sprint to Install App in Android Handsets

Drive First: Sprint to Install App in Android Handsets

Many people use the cell phone while driving, which can prove to be very distracting. In the UK it is actually illegal, and can result in a fine and penalty points on your driving license. Now Sprint has announced plans to make it easier for its customers to concentrate on driving and avoid distractions from their handsets.

Liane Yvkoff over at Cnet is reporting that Sprint will pre-install the Drive First application on all its Android handsets. The application uses GPS technology which calculates the speed you are traveling, and then locks down certain features of the handset when it thinks you are driving.

Once activated the app directs all calls to voicemail, and automatically replies to incoming text messages by saying you are unavailable. Only three features of the handset will be available such as 911 emergency calls, music and navigation.

There is an override button which is useful if you are a passenger, but overriding gets logged so the account administrator, such as a parent or employer, will be able to see if you were using the handset while driving. To actually use the application users will have to sign up for the service and pay $2 per month, and is not expected to be launched before the third quarter of this year.

Do you think this application is a good idea?

Smallest 4-Wheel Drive Cars: List of Top Models for 2011

Smallest 4-Wheel Drive Cars: List of Top Models for 2011

We have some good news for those of you who are looking to buy one of the smallest 4-wheel drive cars on the market. We have picked out a list of some models for you to consider, ones which also have the added advantage of being very fuel efficient too.

You may have seen some of our previous articles on fuel efficient cars, as it’s clear that it remains one of the most important factors when buying any car, especially since fuel prices are becoming increasingly expensive much to our dismay.

However, today is all about the smallest 4-wheel drive cars, and one model that you should consider is the Suzuki SX4 Crossover, available for around $16,099, which is apparently the lowest priced four wheel vehicle in the US according to Buzzle.

Features include a 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder engine, five door hatch styling, built-in navigation, tilt steering wheel and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. In terms of fuel mileage, it will offer you around 22MPG in city areas and 30MPG when you’re on highways.

If that doesn’t take your fancy, why not opt for the more luxurious Audi S3 model which is considerably higher at around $65,500. Features include a 265 brake horsepower (bhp) at 6000 rpm and it can reach 0-60 in around 5.5 seconds. However, the fuel economy is definitely not as good as the Suzuki SX4, so it may be a case of sacrificing a few dollars to get a better looking model on the road.

You can read about some more small 4-wheel drive cars in the link to Buzzle above. We’ve also found another article over at eHow here which you may find interesting. Let us know if you have a recommendation to share.

Live Flight Times US and UK Apps

For those of you who are going to travel and need to keep an eye on flight information, then you will need to gain access to live flight times in the US or UK. This used to be very hard a few years ago when you were out and about, but now thanks to our latest smartphones you will be able to use apps to get the information that you need.

There are two apps that are perfect for the job, they are both the same but have one major difference, one is for the UK and the other for the US. The iPhone app makes it possible for you to check live departures and arrivals, and both only cost $0.99.

The UK version is now unlocked to include 27 airports, such as all the major London ones, Glasgow, Manchester, Belfast etc. You can monitor all flights to these airports, or just search for a specific flight. You can do this by the flight number or by the destination location. Find more details here.

The US app is just the same, but only covers 20 major airports, such as JFK, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orlando, San Francisco, Boston etc. This iPhone app works in the same way as the one mentioned above, and just remember that you will need to have a data connection to use it. Samsung planning Retina Displays and glasses-free 3D for tablets by 2015

With the tablet competition heating up, Samsung are looking to be the closest competitors to Apple's ever so popular iPads. The future that Samsung are foretelling looks like the company could even better the Apple devices when it comes to the display.

With the release of the iPad 2, although they’re selling like hotcakes, there was an element of disappointment surrounding the lack of retina level display. In the news we have today Samsung has revealed their strategy for screen development from now until 2015.

They claim to have developed a tablet with a 300-400 pixel-per-inch resolution displays. One of the current tablets that they have, the 7" Galaxy Tab has a 1024 x 600 display which is only 170ppi but claim with pixel density increasing they could stretch a similar sized display to over 1080p.

All this while still maintaining up to 10 hour's battery life. Also something that could feature in Samsung's future plans is a possible stereoscopic 3D tablet with a display that would produce 3D images without the need for 3D glasses.

More about Samsung's future plans can be found at Engadget, where they provide a gallery of Strategy plans from the company. What do you think about Samsung's strategy? Should Apple be worried? Let us know in the comments below.

Apple Smart Cover for Old iPad (1st Gen) Trick Works Like a Charm

If you are currently a 1st generation iPad owner and are impressed at the quality of the smart covers for the iPad 2, you’ll be interested to know you too can use the smart cover on the iPad 1, with a bit of DIY and by watching this great video we’ve found for you.

Surprisingly, the process is actually very simple, and it turns out that you just need to purchase four earth magnets, apply a little bit of glue and your done. The smart cover attached to the iPad 1 has been demoed by Dan Provost at StudioNeat.com and he provides a link to KJMagnetics to where you can purchase the magnets from.

As you can see from the video, it works pretty good, although don’t expect your iPad 1 to automatically turn itself on like it would do normally with the iPad 2. As for providing your device with a slick cover though and protecting the screen, not to mention fooling everyone to thinking you have a nice new iPad 2 – this DIY job works like a charm.

Try it out for yourself and let us know how you get on. We’ve included the video below so you can see how it looks on the first gen iPad.

TelePresence Tech kiosk: Virtual shopping comes to life

While television manufacturers are working to bring the best that 3D viewing has to offer to the comfort of your living rooms, it seems TelePresence Tech intend on using the technology for retail purposes.

They will bring a whole new meaning to virtual shopping by bringing it to life with their 3D kiosks. The TelePresence Tech Kiosks were spotted at CTIA 2011 where demos were being provided for those fortunate enough to be there.

The kiosk makes a 2D image seem like it is floating and seemingly all angles can be seen of products being d=advertised as if they were actually there. Touchscreens accompany the kiosk allowing shoppers to scroll through like a catalogue and pick which items they wish to get a virtual image of.

Overall this is a less expensive way of bringing products to customers, obviously without the need of a store, and customers can even get face to 'face' customer service through the kiosk and buy the items they desire.

More details about the TelePresence Tech technology being used can be found at their official website by clicking the link. What do you think of this new way of virtual shopping? Let us know in the comments below.

Stronghold 3 Release Date Delayed: Now Arriving Late Summer

We have some rather disappointing news now for those of you that have been waiting for Firefly Studios and SouthPeak Games' much-anticipated real-time strategy title Stronghold 3 to be launched, as both the developer and the publisher have just announced that the game has now been delayed.

As James Orry over at videogamer.com recently reported, the castle building strategy game was scheduled to be released in the spring, but it won't be arriving now until late summer. The reason for the launch date delay is so that the developer can add a whole host of new features to the Stronghold 3 game.

The game's designer Sim Bradbury spoke out about the launch date delay, and said that they want to make sure that fans of the series get the title that they want and deserve. Simon went on to say that although gamers will be disappointed in the delay, they won't be disappointed with the new features.

Stronghold 3 – which actually works out as the sixth game in the series after several spin-offs and an MMORTS – promises a stunning graphics engine, improved multiplayer gameplay and cutting edge physics, as well as night time battles and a new weather system.

Are you disappointed that the Stronghold 3 game has been delayed until the summer?

Energy-efficient military uniform replaces last season’s solar-powered necktie

It seems the military are not just heroes when it comes to battle but also when it comes to saving the environment. While survival and security are on their priority lists, seemingly energy efficiency is not far from the agenda while doing their job.

We previously brought you news of the U.S Army being issued with what the latest in technology has to offer, Individual Gunshot Detectors (IGD), now we have news involving British Troops. Though it may not be the first time you have heard of solar cells being worn, the UK intend on developing a new energy efficient uniform that uses this technology.

A team of researchers have combined thermoelectric devices with photovoltaic cells to create the new improved uniform. These solar powered garments would half the weight of current outfits as the new battery pack is lighter than the traditional ones.

The technology would allow the decrease the possibility of detection from infrared radars and allow the military to perform longer missions by absorbing energy across the whole electromagnetic spectrum.

Though we may not see these uniforms deployed for another couple of years after tests, a prototype is due in 2013. More details can be found at I4U News. What do you think of these uniforms? Let us know in the comments below.

Motorola Atrix 4G: Voice Quality Problems – How Bad Is It?

We have some news for those of you with a Motorola Atrix 4G handset on AT&T who have noticed that there are voice quality issues at hand. Motorola has just acknowledged the problem on their forums and have promised to investigate the situation further.

But just how bad is the problem on the Atrix 4G though? That’s what we want to know. Over on the Motorola forums, we see that a fair few of you are having problems related to the call quality that the recipient hears whilst in a call. Such things include a ‘muffled voice’, hearing distortion and crackling in calls, and also having to speak louder than usual just for the other person to hear them clearly.

Luckily, Motorola hears you and their Forum manager ‘Mark’ has detailed a list of questions for users to answer in order to help them determine the exact issue at hand. Questions such as, ‘are you using a case, if so which brand?’, ‘what is your current noise suppression level’, and there’s even a question asking if you have facial hair or not.’

You can find the full set of questions and reports from Atrix 4G users on the voice quality issues over at the Motorola forums here. If you have an Atrix 4G and are having problems similar to the ones mentioned above, get in touch with us.

Unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3: $70 Gevey SIM worth it or not?

Unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3: $70 Gevey SIM worth it or not?

We have some important news for those of you who are seeking to unlock iOS 4.3 for the iPhone 4 handset. It has been discovered that a SIM card known as the Gevey SIM apparently allows the user to unlock Apple’s latest software, without the need of jailbreaking it first.

The good news about this method, is that it can also unlock the latest baseband, 04.10.01, but the bad news is that there are question marks as to if this method of unlocking is deemed legal or not.

Basically, the Gevey SIM operates by tampering with the iPhone’s activation servers by using the emergency dialer. Another thing that you need to be aware of, is that this thing costs $70 to buy, as reported from Ubergizmo. Also, once you have acheived an unlock on your iPhone 4 using the Gevey SIM, you can’t turn your phone off or you’ll need to repeat the process again – which is obviously frustrating.

Still though, those of you with $70 to spare and who are desperate to unlock your iPhone 4 at any cost, this method may be worthwhile for you. For everyone else who is a bit concerned about this though, it may be worth holding off until the iPhone Dev Team come up with a better solution.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you considering buying the Gevey Sim card for $70 or do you think it is a risky move? We’ll let you know when the thing is out, it’s meant to be hitting retailers and places like Ebay and Amazon soon.

Crysis 2: Xbox 360 Vs PS3 – Which Graphics are Better?

If you’re a regular visitor of some of the best gaming sites on the internet, you’ll know that countless graphics comparisons are being made between the console versions of Crysis 2 on the Xbox 360 or PS3. The game is already out in the US, while those of you in the UK will get to play it on Friday.

Since you probably are getting bored of all the attention that Crysis 2 is getting with regards to it’s graphics (which are stunning by the way), we’re going to keep things to a minimum by pointing you in the direction of perhaps the most definitive verdict you’ll need if you’re looking for the best version between the Xbox 360 and PS3.

That verdict comes from the guys over at Lens of Truth, and you probably will know that their comparisons are well regarded in terms of gaming analysis. They have uploaded a series of side by side screenshots of both versions, as well as an included video to back up their analysis. Each individual image gives you key information below, such as the frame rate on each console per image, and also the amount of screen tearing, if any.

Here’s the interesting part though. While the screenshots seem to suggest that the Xbox 360 has better frame rates than the PS3 version, the 360 version does have a little screen tearing, while the PS3 doesn’t have any. The images themselves though look pretty identical, so it’s a bit harsh to say that there is a clear winner here.

What are your thoughts on their verdict? Are you satisfied that there are no big differences between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Crysis 2? We’ve included the video below since it’s pretty essential that you take a look for yourself.

Samsung Galaxy S II: Leaked Hardware and Touch Wiz 4.0 Videos before Release

It has been a while since we last heard about the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S II, but we’re pleased to say that we have something good for you. A new leaked video of the device has surfaced over in Ukraine and it gives us a fantastic look at the handset for the very first time.

The Galaxy S II has a gathered a huge following since it’s unveiling at MWC 2011, as Samsung can proudly boast that they have currently have the world’s thinnest smartphone on their books in the S II, or S2 as it’s also known.

The video gives us a look at just how thin the device really is, not to mention giving us a first look at the brand new Touch Wiz 4.0 User Interface on top of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. However, a brief glimpse is all you get though, as most of the duration is reserved for a hardware guide, and showing you where all the ports are, and there’s a peek at inside the battery compartment too.

Since this prototype has mangaged to leak out, we’re presuming that more videos are on the way from Gagadget, the source of the information. You can head over to their website for tons more information on the S II , but you’ll need Google Translate at hand because it’s all in Russian.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming Galaxy S II – Is this a handset that is on your shortlist or not? It’s scheduled for release within the next few months.

UPDATE: We’ve now included a second video which gives you a detailed tour through the interface, enjoy!

Nintendo 3DS: Manual Contains Brick Warning to Hackers

Nintendo 3DS: Manual Contains Brick Warning to Hackers

Last month we gave you an indication that a Japanese Nintendo 3DS had already been hacked to allow the use of R4 Cards which became very popular for the old DS, but now we’ve learned that Nintendo are ready to take action against anyone who attempts to hack into their new prized asset.

The Nintendo 3DS is out this week in Europe and the US and we can tell you that the official manual for the system contains a statement from Nintendo which warns hackers that the 3DS includes built-in ‘technical protection measures’ which will detect the use of unauthorized programs, or R4 cards like we mentioned above.

Here is the message in full as reported from PGN:

"This product contains technical protection measures. Use of an unauthorized device or any unauthorized technical modification to your Nintendo 3DS system, will render this game and/or your system unplayable."

As you can see, Nintendo also state that attempting to hack the 3DS will result in a permanent brick, both for the 3DS itself AND the game that is currently loaded onto your 3DS. They obviously knew that hacking was a major problem on both the DS and Wii, so it looks like they have extra measures to ensure that security on the 3DS will be upheld.

Having said that, we don’t think the system is unhackable. Time and time again someone comes along and manages to open up the system, and the whole bandwagon starts off again. We think it’s a question of when, and not if. What are your thoughts on this? Are you interested in the use of these R4 cards on the 3DS or has this message scared you away?

Harry Houdini and the Google Doodle Logo: Your Favorite Magic Tricks?

Google may have surprisingly decided to miss out on posting a Doodle homescreen logo for St Patrick’s Day (US site) which has just passed, but there is no mistaking today’s doodle which celebrates the 137th birthday of the infamous magician Harry Houdini.

If you visit the Google homepage today, you’ll see that Google has put up another of their famous doodles, this one in the style of Harry Houdini. It features an old style, advertisement poster for one of Harry’s many tricks, while there’s also an image of the man himself with shackles attached to his arms.

Since Google are celebrating today, we wonder if today means anything special to you? Do you know how to perform any magic tricks which were made famous by Harry Houdini? Some of his famous ones are the Chinese Water Cell torture trick, a Mirror handcuff routine, a box escape which had been chained and lowered in water and many more.

It’s obvious that Houdini was an inspiration to modern day magicians today like David Blaine and Illusion specialist Derren Brown, so it’s no surprise to see Google remind us just what an iconic figure he really was. You can read a full bio on Houdini over at his Wikipedia page and find out about some of his famous tricks.

Mortal Kombat: Xbox 360 Exclusive Character – Kratos Beater or Pipe Dreams?

We have just showed you the very first official gameplay trailer for Kratos, but now we have some information which may excite Xbox 360 owners who are still feeling a bit frustrated that they aren’t getting an exclusive character on the Xbox 360 for Mortal Kombat.

It seemed a foregone conclusion that the Xbox 360 wouldn’t be receiving an exclusive character, unlike the PS3 which has God Of War’s Kratos, but some recent comments by creator Ed Boon may just offer Xbox 360 owners a glimmer of hope. Here is what he had to say in an interview with Giant Bomb, as reported from VGHQ:

”Well, there's nothing that we have ready to announce but we love our 360 players and we love our PS3 players and I think everybody's gonna get something they'll be happy with.”

Obviously, this isn’t a clear cut confirmation that the Xbox 360 will get an exclusive character, but it’s clear that NetherRealm Studios are going to offer ‘something’ at least, to sweeten the deal on the Xbox 360 side of things. At the moment, Xbox 360 owners are clearly not happy with the PS3 getting Kratos, a Kratos stage and 3D support, so what are NetherRealm going to add to the Xbox 360 version of the game?

It’s the big question that everyone is waiting to hear the answer to. What are your thoughts on this? We still have a while to go until the April 19 release date, so there’s plenty of time for further reveals. Do you think the Xbox 360 will get an exclusive character in the end, or is it a case of fighting a lost cause?
