Apple Working on New Maps App for iPhone and iPad

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 09:42 PM PDT

Apple has been using the Google-powered Maps app in all iOS-powered devices, since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. Back then, Apple and Google were very close partners, but since then, the companies grew apart, and eventually turned out to be ‘frenemies.’

Since then, Google launched Android, and built a great maps app for the operating system, featuring unique capabilities such as 3D maps, and most importantly, turn-by-turn navigation. Meanwhile, the Maps app that ships with iPhone and iPad never really evolved, and as of today, it still doesn’t offer much more than aerial maps and traffic information.

As a result, Apple is allegedly working on its own maps and navigation service, to replace the Google-powered app once and for all. According to 9to5mac, Apple posted a new job opening on its corporate website, to hire a new developer tasked to “radically improve how people interact with maps and location-based services.”

The Maps team is looking for an exceptional developer to join us in our mission to radically improve how people interact with maps and location-based services.

Apple has been rumored to be working on its own maps service for a while. The company already hired several developers late last year to help with the development of “navigation software on a massive scale.” The new service could be tied to the upcoming new version of MobileMe, and could be powered by Apple’s new data center in North Carolina.

Real Racing 2 HD for iPad 2 Brings Full 1080p Video Output Support

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 02:37 PM PDT

When the iPad 2 was released the dual-core A5 chip and the 9x faster graphics became instant hits with game developers. Why? The processing power and graphics simply make the game rendering techniques more powerful, and the gyroscope will add much more precision to all sorts of games.

Firemint has certainly taken advantage of the new iPad 2. The company has confirmed an upcoming update to Real Racing 2 HD that will support full 1080p HD video output on the iPad 2.

When the iPad 2 was announced, Apple talked about the new HDMI adapter that would allow you to use your HDTV or projector as a bigger display for your iPad. Basically, you can mirror your iPad 2′s screen to a larger HDTV or monitor.

However, the iPad 2′s maximum resolution is 1024×768. This means that even though you can mirror your iPad 2′s screen to a bigger HDTV or monitor, you will most likely see those weird black bars on the sides of the video image.

Going forward, you will see several game developers taking full advantage of the iPad 2′s graphics processor (PowerVR SGX543MP2). This is exactly what Firemint has done with the upcoming update for Real Racing 2 HD. The game will display beautifully on a larger screen in full 1080p resolution while the iPad 2′s touchscreen will show the track map, race statistics and more. The new update is not available yet. Check out the video below for more details.

I’ve been wondering if Apple would ever get into the gaming platform business. I’ve always wondered if Apple will use part of their huge cash reserves to buy someone else. We never know. But, one thing is for sure, the iPad 2 capabilities have certainly shown its power for the gaming industry. With 1080p high definition games coming our way, it looks like Apple has reserved a special place for the iPad 2.

Let’s not forget either that AirPlay might make its way into HDTVs, as Apple is allegedly in talks with major HDTV makers.

Apple Releases iOS 4.3.1 for iPad and iPhone Users

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 02:08 PM PDT

Apple has just released iOS 4.3.1 which brings a number of minor fixes to Apple’s mobile device lineup. The update comes just 14 days after iOS 4.3 was released on March 11 with the launch of the new iPad 2.

The update doesn’t include any major new features but does fix several customer issues including:

• Fixes an occasional graphics glitch on iPod touch (4th generation)
• Resolves bugs related to activating and connecting to some cellular networks
• Fixes image flicker when using Apple Digital AV Adapter with some TVs
• Resolves an issue authenticating with some enterprise web services

The update is for iPad 2, iPad, iPhone 4 (GSM), iPhone 3GS along with 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touch owners.

Previous reports indicated Apple was planning to release the update soon and that it would be focused on bug fixes vs. new features.  With the iOS 4.3.1 update, Apple is said to have “fixed” the jailbreak vulnerability found in 4.3.

The update is available via the iTunes Software Update feature.

A New MobileMe Cloud Music Service for $20 Per Year?

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:49 AM PDT

A week ago, Apple sent an email to its suppliers, to tell them that the company would not be selling MobileMe subscriptions anymore.

The turn of events clearly signaled that Apple is about to release a major update of its MobileMe service, to include new capabilities such as online storage. Several reports have claimed the new MobileMe would be free, however a report by The Music Void seems to indicate the locker service would cost around $20 per year.

The current MobileMe service offers the ability to store calendar and contacts data, and costs $99. From what we know, the new service would allow much more than that. The rumors indicate you will be able to leverage Apple's cloud (via Lala’s acquisition) to store your files in a personal locker including music, photos, video, and even allow iOS 5 users to synchronize their devices with the cloud.

As expected, every time we start talking about music files we should not forget about content rights, which is a delicate topic within the music industry. This means Apple needs to convince Universal, Sony and EMI Records to move over to the new cloud service. We have to assume Apple should be able to do so.

However, what seems to be a bit unclear at the moment, is whether or not Apple will charge for parts of the new MobileMe service. Even though earlier reports indicated the MobileMe service would be offered free of charge, The Music Void report indicates the new service would set you back $20 per year. Some have speculated that maybe Apple will offer sync features for free, while releasing some additional paid options for larger storage for your video and music files.

April is just around the corner. We’ve heard about a new iOS roadmap event next month. The expectation is for Apple to reveal their iOS 5 plans and a revamped MobileMe service. Stay tuned. We will follow this story very closely.
