World's First 3D Camcorder – JVC GS-TD1 Review

JVC's new GS-TD1 is claimed to be world's first 3D camcorder that features a full-HD 1080i 3D recording at 30fps with a price tag of 1,699$. It offers the same twin lens and image sensor features as the latest HDR-TD10 3D camcorder, from the leading electronic company Sony Corporation, which was also unveiled during the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. What makes the new JVC GS-TD1 special from its other competitors is the availability of its most advanced and wide range of manual controls in 3D mode. You'll also find some other good features like 3D still-image capturing and 3D time-lapse recording in GS-TD1.

Product Overview

On JVC's GS-TD1, 3D recording is not optional anymore. It has two slightly offset built-in lenses, and each lens got a 3.32mp 1CMOS sensor at its back, that is integrated into the camcorder's body and generate the 3D effect. The JVC GS-TD1 gives you 5x optical zoom and uses a Falconbird CPU to simultaneously process the two images, and produces a Full-HD 1920x1080i 3D result. If you shoot in 2D mode with TD1, the optical zoom will bumped up to 10 xs. But it is still not as impressive as the Sony's HDR-TD10 optical zoom options, which offers 10x zoom for 3D recording and 12X zoom during 2D recording.

Compression

GS-TD1 offers a number of compression options for 3D recording mode. The default one for GS-TD1 is AVCHD, which is easier to make changes and archive.

Media

The JVC GS-TD1 contains an internal memory of 64GB and also supports a memory card slot. Recorded vides are saved to the GS-TD1's internal flash memory. Moreover additional memory can also be added using SD/SDXC/SDHC cards.

Manual Controls

The JVC's GS-TD1 got a smart Auto mode in both 3D and 2D modes. Also GS-TD1's 3D recording mode provides you full set of scene modes options. The GS-TD1's manual Focus feature is still not very exciting in both forms i.e. camcorder's touchscreen system and adjustment dial on the flipside of the camcorder. The Exposure feature can be set in two ways either through touchscreen or using control dial and the aperture range available on the GS-TD1 is f/1.2 – f/5.6. The TD1's manual shutter speed option ranges from 1/2 – 1/4000 of a sec.

LCD & Ease of Use

The GS-TD1's offers a glasses-free 3.5 inch touch-panel 3D monitor, which is bright and sharp as well, but the LCD screen look disappointingly blurred and rough in 3D mode. Whereas in 2D mode the same LCD screen looks fantastic. The GS-TD1 doesn't appear as a typical camcorder in terms of looks, but overall it is quite simple to handle other than its unusual shape. All the controls can be set automatic or manually both in 3D and 2D modes. The GS-TD1 is slightly bulky and has an oddly located battery compartment. To insert or remove the battery, you first must open a door on the right side of the camcorder. Then you must press a small battery release switch to remove the battery and fit your hands into the compartment to actually get at the battery. This is surprisingly awkward.

Audio Features & Connectivity

The GS-TD1 has a built-in microphone called "3D sound", which used Biphonic technology, which are still need to be test in terms of performance. The GS-TD1 has two ports namely HDMI output and DC-input located on the back of the camcorder, while the USB port, AV-output and the memory card are located inside the LCD nook.

The most impressive thing about the JVC GS-TD1 is the presence of its wide-ranging set of manual controls and features that were functional in both 2D and 3D record modes. The presence of features like 3D-time lapse recording, 3D still image mod and the manual shutter speed adjustment set the JVC GS-TD1 apart from the other 3D camcorders available in market.

The JVC's TD1 camcorder also does well in 2D mode with excellent clarity.

Motorola is “Thinking Big”

Apple has already become apple's of everyone eye. Globally, it gained fame as the best Gadget provider. Knowing this fact, Motorola has marked it as its number one competitor especially in the field of best Tablets.

Apple has become a role model for the other Tablets providers. Many companies after it plunged into this field, because all were aware that profit potential exists in Tablet market. Motorola also introduced its Tablet in the form of Motorola Xoom at CES 2011. On the other hand, Apple launched iPad2 on 2nd March 2011 and set new standards for its competitors.

Motorola is still very optimistic. Andy Hooper who is director of Motorola said, "I think opportunity is there (to take on Apple), they are a competitor to have because they set a great benchmark. There was absolute no surprise around what they did with the iPad 2, and my own thought is that they could have done more. But it moves quickly that there is no resting on laurels anywhere and ultimately we have to go out and bring a quality product to market"

Motorola is setting up to launch Xoom 2 in future. It seems to be that Motorola is working on the strategy of continuous innovation to compete with its rivals.
