Cannibal Bunnies – iPad Game Review

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 12:08 AM PDT

Bunnies are cute and cuddly, right? When you have standup citizens like Bugs Bunny, Thumper, Roger Rabbit and of course the Easter Bunny it’s hard to find fault with the furry creatures. After playing Cannibal Bunnies on the iPad you might have a different opinon about these rascally rabbits.

Bugs and Thumper are nothing like the nasty Cannibal Bunnies you’ll find in Creative Drops Studios’ great iPad game.  The game is extremely simple to learn but hard to master so you’re sure to have fun anytime you pick up your iPad for some quick game play.

Cannibal Bunnies starts off with a colorful intro video, which you can easily skip, where you witness the plight of the pink bunnies as they try and escape from the evil and hungry cannibal bunnies.  Once you’re past the intro, you hit the main screen where you can choose from a number of selections.  You can opt to jump right into the action, adjust game options or take advantage of the in-game tutorial to learn how to play.

Once you start the game, you’ll immediately notice the game’s great artwork.  The graphics are visually appealing and flow smoothly even on the original iPad, no need for the iPad 2′s extra graphics performance.  The object of the game is to grab the cute pink bunnies and put them in protective cages before they either fall off a cliff or get mangled by hungry cannibal bunnies. Sounds easy, but these cuddly characters are hard to round up and the purple and red cannibal bunnies gobble up pink bunnies like there’s no tomorrow.  The red bunnies are particularly feisty and will not only eat the other rabbits but will pull dirty tricks like rolling boulders at them in an effort to wipe them out.

If the hungry cannibal bunnies and perilous drops aren’t challanging enough, you’ll also be racing against the clock as you try to complete each level by capturing enough bunnies.  If you can’t capture the minimum count, or if you exceed the time limit, you’ll have to tackle the level all over again.

To mix things up, the developers have added a number of treats for your bunnies to eat.  If one of your bunnies eats a Delicious Carrot they become invincible and can’t be captured.  If your bunnies are unlucky enough to eat one of the Spotty Carrots they’ll become violently ill.  If you stick a sick rabbit in a cage, the cage will need to be quarantined and will be inaccessible for the rest of the level.

The developers have added 20 new levels to the game as part of their Easter World addition, brining the level count to 66.  Game play takes place across four different worlds so the scenery is always fresh. The Easter World levels add several new elements to the game like snowball cannons and mushrooms that make the pink bunnies float.

What I liked: Quick game play makes this the perfect distraction when you have a few minutes to burn. Great graphics and smooth animation.

What I didn’t like: Game controls can sometimes be finicky.  No button to easily return to the main menu when in the middle of game play means you’ll have to finish or fail a level before you can go back.

To buy or not to buy: Cannibal Bunnies isn’t the cheapest game around but the graphics are great and the developers have added an additional 20 level as part of their Easter World package.  Bottom line: the game play is simple and addictive so if you’re looking for a fun way to waste the time away, give Cannibal Bunnies a try.

Fox Requests Time Warner to Remove Channels from iPad TV App

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 11:54 PM PDT

Just when the iPad has turned into the TV gadget that many of us hope it would become, content providers have discovered a whole new way to charge everyone for live TV.

A few hours ago, Fox gave the cease-and-desist warning to Time Warner Cable via a letter, asking the service provider to remove Fox channels from the TWCable TV iPad app.

But, why? It’s very simple. TV content providers like Fox, Viacom and others have seen the danger of a mobile device like the iPad, which has changed the way all of us consume our content. They’ve decided to go on the offensive, and have determined that a device like the iPad offers a new way for them to charge all of us for every little bit of streaming content.

According to Fox, Time Warner does not have the rights to stream its shows on the iPad. Time Warner maintains its position about content rights. The cable company maintains it has the rights to distribute live TV feeds to multiple screens in the home, including the iPad.

Folks, we’ve looked into all of the iPad apps developed by service providers such as Comcast, DirectTV, Dish Network, Verizon, and Time Warner. All of them give you the chance to discover new shows, follow your favorite programs, control your DVR, schedule DVR recordings and more.

But, Time Warner’s iPad app is the only one (so far) that makes live TV channels available to subscribers without the need for a Sling adapter or any other box, as long as you stream TV content from your home network. Let me repeat that again – “as long as you stream TV content from your home network”. In other words, the Time Warner app validates who you are, then determines whether or not you have the entitlement to stream paid content, as long as you stay inside your beautiful house.

Make no mistake about it. Companies like Comcast, Verizon and others have thought about providing the same experience inside the home. All of them recognize that we’re going through a major paradigm shift in the way consumers have decided to consume their preferred content. It means that service providers understand they need to make watching any content, any time, on any device anywhere simple and easy for all consumers.

The Time Warner app only provides access to 32 channels from the cable lineup. However, the service provided has given enough fuel to subscribers, that now those same subscribers are asking for much more viewing options.

Content providers like Fox, Viacom and others simply need to realize that service/network providers like Time Warner do have the capabilities in their networks to secure valuable content. It is time to think “outside the box”. The market has evolved, which means that content providers like Fox will need to embrace the new digital era, and partner with others in order to remain relevant to the masses.

Adobe Working on New Version of Photoshop for iPad, Adding Support for Layers

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 05:38 PM PDT

The only Photoshop-related iPad app released thus far, Photoshop Express, never proved to be a success, as the app only offered a handful of the core capabilities of the Photoshop suite, and only allowed users to perform basic tasks, such as applying filters, or straightening pictures.

But Adobe hasn’t been resting on its laurels, as the company unveiled earlier today a full blown version of Photoshop for the iPad, offering most of the capabilities available in the desktop version of the image editing suite.

The new Photoshop iPad app will bring advanced image manipulation tools, and will allow users to add and manipulate layers, just like the desktop version of the software.

Since the iPad only offers a touch-based interface, and no mouse, the app will use a new layering system, designed to allow users to switch between layers easily.

Once released, the app will go head-to-head with other popular advanced image editing apps for the iPad, such as Photogene and PhotoForge. Photoshop for iPad is slated to hit the App Store next month, but note that at this stage, the price of the app is unknown.

iPad 2 GSM & CDMA Model Teardown – No Big Surprises

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 09:21 AM PDT

The folks at iFixit have been at it again and this time they decided to tear apart the GSM and CDMA versions of the iPad 2.  The company already did a teardown of the 16GB WiFi iPad 2 but they thought it only made sense to do the same for the other two models in the iPad 2 lineup.

The teardown didn’t reveal any big new surprises from what we’ve seen in either the iPad 2 WiFi model or iPhone 4 for Verizon. The most obvious difference between the models is the type of 3G wireless technology used in both the GSM and CDMA models.  The 3G GSM model uses UMTS chips from Infineon while the CDMA model uses a baseband processor from Qualcomm. The GSM unit also features a micro SIM slot unlike the WiFi and CDMA versions, that don’t require a SIM card to function.

The extra 3G wireless circuitry doesn’t take up much extra space as it all fits conveniently on a 1″ x 3″ circuit board connect to the main motherboard.  Both the AT&T and CDMA units also add in extra 3G wireless antennas, which are not needed on the WiFi only models.

iPad Games – Disc Drivin’ HD App Review

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 08:32 AM PDT

Pixelocity’s Disc Drivin’ has been a popular asynchronous multi-player racing game for the iPhone and iPod touch for a while. It’s an addictive game that will have you taking turns with your friends to flick a small disc around a track to determine who crosses the finish line first. The game will make you sweat and force you to use awesome powers and avoid hazards on beautiful tracks with full 3D physics.

The game is now available with optimized graphics for the iPad.

In case you’re not familiar with the game, Pixelocity Software has designed a game that is an asynchronous multi-player racing game, where you and up to 7 friends or 3 online players will take turns racing around a challenging track. The challenging and fun part of this game is that you race your friends at your own pace by swiping your disc around the track, and using your power-ups while attempting to stay on the track.

You get to activate powers during your turn like turbo boost, bombs, and oil slicks. The game will also throw at you unique obstacles in each track such as bumpers, barriers, and ramps.

The iPad game and overall content is similar to the iPhone/iPod touch version. The developer has upgraded the artwork to fit the iPad’s larger screen. I like the fact that you can toggle the overhead view off and on, which gives you a better perspective of the overall track. In addition, there are pop-up windows that allow you to access your current races list.

Pixelocity has implemented full 3D physics effects, in-game chat, Retina display graphics and push notifications that tell you when it's your turn to race the track. You also have the ability to play up to 20 games online simultaneously.

The push notifications system is very nice. You can play the game across iOS devices without worrying about missing any notifications. The game will send push notifications to any device you're logged in from. All games are hosted on the server-side, which means you can log-in from a different iOS device and the game will reload your race list as soon as you open the app.

One thing to keep in mind, is that Disc Drivin’ is not an universal app. That means you need to decide which game you want to buy, the new iPad version or the iPhone/iPod touch version. However, you can always try the lite (free) iPhone version to experience the game before making your buying decision. I wish they had a lite (free) version for the iPad also.

What I liked: Disc Drivin’ HD is an extremely fun game for your iPad. Plays excellent on the larger screen. The push notifications mechanism is great. It’s a fun and challenging game.

What I didn’t like: I would like to see more race courses added in future updates. It’s a fun multi-player game, but the current version does not support a single-player offline mode. Would be nice to get a single-player option so that you don’t always have to compete against random opponents online.

To buy or not to buy: Disc Drivin’ HD is a very fun game for the iPad. It’s addictive, challenging and a good game to relax while playing against your friends online. If you’re not sure about this game, simply download the free ad-supported iPhone version to give it a try. Disc Drivin HD is a good download for your iPad. The game is available now in the App Store for $2.99.

  • App Name: Disc Drivin’ HD
  • Version: 1.4
  • Category: Games
  • Developer: Pixelocity Software
  • Price: $2.99
