Alphabytes – iPad App for Kids

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 10:27 PM PDT

Whether you have the iPad or iPad 2, most parents load at least a few educational apps on their device for children.  If you’re interested in kids apps, Alphabytes is a new one that helps kids master the alphabet, practice writing, test their memory and learn to spell.

Start Alphabytes and pick one of the four activities.  Tap the letters in the left corner of the screen and a bowl of cereal appears.  Kids can then select different letters in the bowl to get interactive examples related to each.  Hammer a few nails, draw with a pencil, strum the zither and much more in this great app.

Move on to another section by tapping twice on any of the other activities (one in each corner).  Kids can practice writing upper and lowercase letters by following the arrows and tracing the outline, match letters and their corresponding pictures in a memory game and finally learn to spell each of the items by selecting the appropriate letters to create a word.

Alphabytes is an entertaining educational app for kids.  They’ll love playing with their food and enjoy learning, even if they don’t realize it.

Featured in the App Store’s New and Noteworthy and What’s Hot sections, Alphabytes is getting good reviews as well.  You can pickup this fun new educational app for your kids today for $1.99.  We don’t know how long the sale will last so shop now to make sure you get the best deal.

MIC Gadget’s CompactFlash Card Reader for iPad Photographers

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 05:00 PM PDT

Looking for a way to broaden your photographic horizons with your DSLR camera? Some of our readers have asked us about options to get pictures and videos onto the first-generation iPad and iPad 2 for quick viewing and editing.

We’ve written about several options to help you transfer photos between your iPad and your DSLR camera, as well as options for previewing and editing your images. Another option is MIC Gadget’s new CompactFlash (CF) adapter, which gives iPad and iPad 2 owners additional card format support.

MIC Gadget has released a CF adapter that lets photographers load photos and videos to the first-generation iPad and the iPad 2. The CF Card adapter comes with a “2-in-1″ compact flash card and USB port. It is compatible with higher-end DSLRs and some older compact cameras. In addition, the reader will support modern UDMA-capable cards.

According to MIC Gadget, the adapter supports photo and video importing, including the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. However, the iPad built-in video player cannot playback the video encode from the 5D Mark II, which will require you to download third-party applications to play the video from that camera.

The following are the iPad video formats supported by MIC Gadget’s new accessory.

  • H.264 video, up to 720p, 30 frames per second; main profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
  • MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
  • Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format.

The CF Card adapter is available now directly from MIC Gadget’s website. It will set you back $30.
