How Strong is the iPad 2 Glass Panel?

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 07:30 PM PDT

How Strong is the iPad 2 glass panel? Much stronger than the one Apple used on the first generation iPad, apparently.

The guys at ifixyouri took an iPad 2 apart, to check how strong the glass panel was. After countless torture tests, the glass proved to be remarkably strong, as it was able to withstand incredible amounts of abuse without breaking.

These tests are extreme, and in real-life, bending an iPad 2 like that is simply impossible. In other words, your device front panel is almost indestructible.

DIY Project – Use the iPad 2 Smart Cover on Your iPad

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 06:59 PM PDT

Like the idea of the Smart Cover that comes with the iPad 2, but can’t justify the upgrade yet?  You’re in luck!  A clever individual from blog site, The Russians Used a Pencil, has figured out how to attach the Smart Cover for the iPad 2 onto the original iPad.

Intrigued by the idea of a Smart Cover, but choosing to wait for the rumored Retina Display and not upgrade to the iPad 2, Dan Provost ordered the Apple cover with plans to retrofit his iPad to work with it.  Once his new Smart Cover arrived in the mail, the task to install it became the challenge.  Careful analysis of his iPad and new cover helped Provost determine all he needed was a few strategically placed thin magnets.

After ordering the necessary supplies from K&J Magnetics, Provost was able to successfully complete his project by super gluing the magnets to the side of his iPad.  The only drawback, the cover installed on the original iPad does not automatically turn the device on when you open the cover or turn it off when you close it.

Although attaching the Smart Cover to your original iPad isn’t quite the same as the new iPad 2 wearing it, it may help you curb your desire to purchase an upgrade a little bit longer.

For detailed directions on how to duplicate this DIY project, check out Provost’s blog.

iPad 2 Online Shipping Times Drop to 3-4 Weeks

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 12:07 PM PDT

US Online Store

On the heels of Apple’s international iPad 2 rollout, the company’s online store now shows estimated shipping times have dropped to 3-4 weeks.  The US online store began showing estimated shipping times of 4-5 weeks shortly after the iPad 2 launched on March 11.

Improved shipping times should be a welcoming sign to frustrated customers who have repeatedly waited in line in hopes of securing Apple’s latest must-have gadget.  Another positive for customers ordering online is Apple’s estimated ship dates appear to be very accurate.  Readers have repeatedly told us Apple’s shipping window is dead-on and that they received their iPad 2 well within the time-range Apple provided.

Overseas customers appear to be even better off. Both the Australian and New Zealand Online Apple Stores now show only a 2-3 week estimated ship time.  The two countries are the first international markets to begin selling Apple’s new iPad 2. Another 23 countries will begin selling the iPad 2 online at 1:00 am local time.

T-Mobile UK Ready for iPad 2 International Launch Tomorrow

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 06:52 AM PDT

Earlier this week, Apple announced that iPad 2 will be available in 25 additional countries beginning tomorrow. As expected, the new iPad 2 will go on sale at Apple retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers starting at 5:00 p.m. local time.

T-Mobile UK didn’t waste anytime announcing it is ready to serve its UK customers, and it will offer a subsidized iPad 2 starting tomorrow.

Our colleagues from Geeky Gadgets have informed us about the T-Mobile UK plans.

The carrier will start offering the 16GB WiFi and 3G iPad 2 models at £199 for existing customers, and £229 for new customers. However, the 32GB and 64GB models will not be available via the UK-based carrier. They will only sell the 16GB WiFi and 3G iPad 2 models starting tomorrow with a 2-year contract commitment.

If you’re an existing T-Mobile UK subscriber, be ready to pay £25 a month and £199 upfront for the 16GB WiFi and 3G iPad 2. Otherwise, new T-Mobile UK subscribers will pay £27 a month and £229 up front for the 16GB WiFi and 3G iPad 2 models.

By committing to a 2-year contract, subscribers will get 1GB of monthly data, and the UK-based carrier will also provide 1GB of “quiet time”, which means you get an extra 1GB of data usage between 12AM and 10AM.

T-Mobile UK will be ready to take iPad 2 orders online or over the phone tomorrow starting at 5:00 PM local time.

The iPad 2 has been available in limited quantities in the U.S. since it went on sale on March 11. Many have speculated Apple would be forced to delay the iPad 2′s international launch due to the inventory situation. Let’s hope our international friends get a chance to buy the iPad 2 tomorrow!
