Poll: Which device from CTIA interests you the most?

Posted:

Ah CTIA , we barely knew you.  You started and ended so quickly, but gave us a decent sneak peek of what's coming to the US mobile market this year.  From the HTC EVO 3D to the T-Mobile G2x to the Nokia Astound to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, there's a lot to be excited about.  And needless to say, 3D-enabled devices are the "thing" of 2011. So I throw it over to you - which device from CTIA interested you the most?  As always, cast that vote, and defend it in the...

HTC EVO 3D First Impressions

Posted:

During a one-on-one meeting with Sprint executives at CTIA, I was able to get some hands-on time with the HTC EVO 3D , Sprint's newest smartphone.  It packs a 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 4.3-inch qHD display, dual 5-megapixel cameras for HD video recording, and a 1,730 mAh battery.  While it isn't as jaw-dropping as the original EVO 4G (high-end Android devices are commonplace now), it's an impressive device. As our meeting concluded, another event started in the...

iPad 1 knocked down to $300 at some Verizon locations

Posted:

If you're in the market for an iPad and missed out on AT&T's iPad 1 deal last week or just didn't feel the need for a 3G-enabled model, the folks at Verizon have a deal that may interest you. Reports have been flying in that Verizon is selling the WiFi-only iPad 1 for as little as $299.99 in its brick and mortar locations. That price is for the 16GB model, but if you'd prefer a little more storage, you can nab the 32GB or 64GB version for $399.99 or $499.99, respectively. These...

Where are our Gingerbread updates?

Posted:

One of the biggest issues with Android to date is the painfully slow update process and fragmentation. While the fragmentation issues are slowly dissipating , updating remains an agonizing process. For those not daring enough to test out custom ROMs , waiting on the next official version of Android can be a long, frustrating wait. Froyo, or Android 2.2, was released back in May of 2010. Only three months later, HTC's EVO 4G was updated to Froyo. This, in actuality, was a very...

HTC Inspire 4G's HSUPA-enabling update gets FCC approval [UPDATED]

Posted:

Along with the Motorola Atrix 4G, HTC's Inspire 4G is one of the handsets that AT&T advertises a "4G" but actually isn't enabled to access HSUPA. We're expecting both the Atrix and Inspire to get updates to enable HSUPA at some point in the future, and now evidence of the latter getting updated has emerged. HTC has informed the FCC that it plans to flip the Inspire's HSUPA switch to "on," and the FCC has given the A-OK on the change. There's no indication as to when the update will actually...

The NoDo update is coming!

Posted:

In the last couple days users in parts of Europe with unbranded Windows Phones have been getting the much-anticipated NoDo update.  At the time I am writing this there is no schedule on who is getting the update and when but it will be slowly rolled out to keep from overloading servers.  Actually, is there really a threat of overloading servers considering the number of Windows Phones sold?  I suppose that depends on the servers. Last month Microsoft pushed out it's...

LG has launched a variant of their Optimus One smartphone on just about every carrier around in the past months, and now they can add another operator to that list. Of course, as with all Cricket devices, you won't need to sign any kind of contract with the Optimus C, though you will need to sign up for a $55 unlimited everything plan...

Is Android app support for the BlackBerry PlayBook just a gimmick?

Posted:

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook , the company’s first tablet device, is set to launch on April 19 th here in the United States. And while the tablet is feature rich, especially considering the power of the tablet itself, it’s still hindered by the fact that it’s being positioned by RIM as more of a corporate tool, rather than a device easily compared to the iPad, or Motorola’s XOOM tablet. But, RIM looks to be trying to fix that quandary by ...

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 due to get Gingerbread later this year

Posted:

We thought that when Sony Ericsson updated the XPERIA X10 to Android 2.1 last year, that was the last Android OS update that the aging X10 would ever see . It appears that SE has had a change of heart, though, as they've announced that the X10 will be updated to Gingerbread at the end of Q2 or the beginning of Q3. Unfortunately for the other X10 devices like the X10 Mini and Mini Pro , as well as the X8 , SE has confirmed that those devices will not be getting the same treatment...

Congratulations to A. Karani of CA on winning a brand new Apple iPod Shuffle on Thursday March 24, 2011. "I've been playing Phonedog's One-Paw Bandit since when the prize was a HTC Hero so to win after this long is definitely a welcome surprise. Everyone needs to give it a try, it pays off, believe me. Thanks Phonedog!"

Android Market in-app purchases coming next week

Posted:

I hope you've been saving your pennies, Android users, because your Market experience could be getting a lot more expensive beginning next week. Google announced today on the Android Developers Blog that testing of Android's in-app purchasing system has officially begun, with a full roll out planned for sometime next week. If you happen to be an Android dev, you can now add in-app products to your software that's currently available, set prices, and even set up a test account to make sure that...

HTC ThunderBolt now number one on PhoneDog's Top Smartphones list for Verizon Wireless

Posted:

Some of you readers will see this list and think we must be out of our minds and some of you will see this list and think "it's about time." After much testing and thought, we've come to the conclusion that the HTC ThunderBolt is the new number one smartphone from Verizon, thereby dethroning the Apple iPhone 4 . There's not many lists I've seen where the iPhone is number two, so relish this moment, Apple haters. In reality, no matter who you root for, you can't deny the sheer power and...

T-Mobile G-Slate Hands-On

Posted:

Honeycomb goodness! Aaron takes a look at the T-Mobile G-Slate , an HSPA+ tablet that's coming soon for $529.99. It offers a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 8.9-inch display, Android 3.0, two 5-megapixel cameras for 720p HD 3D video recording, and a front-facing shooter for those fun times on the town. It's a nice tablet, but it's coming into a market that's getting crowded by the week. Will it be able to hold its own?
