Samsung Keylogger Software: VIPRE Mistaken as StarLogger

Samsung Keylogger Software: VIPRE Mistaken as StarLogger

The recent reports about Samsung Keylogger software have certainly got the online community talking, and it did not take long for the Korean consumer electronics company to come out and defend itself and its R Series range of laptops. However, things are not what they seem, and it looks as though there is proof that this was just a false positive.

Samsung along with a number of others have run some tests and found that a security program called VIPRE managed to mistake a Live Application from Microsoft as a “SL” folder, as StarLogger during a virus scan of the system.

This is not the first and will not be the last time that a false positive has caused an issue, and in some cases can be just as serious as a real virus. It does not take long for news to spread of such a thing, and even though it is an error, can have a huge affect on companies – such as Samsung in this case.

Thankfully it has not taken long to get to the route of this issue, but there were those out there who assumed the worst and thought that Samsung were up to no good – which if you read the article from ZDNET you know that it was untrue.

Canon EOS 60D, Firmware Update 1.0.9 – Download and Changes

Canon has recently launched a new firmware update for the Canon EOS 60D digital SLR, this update will bring your camera to firmware version 1.0.9 and brings some minor changes / fixes to to the camera.

Firstly and most unimportantly you will see that the “Art Filters” feature has disappeared, don’t worry though as it hasn’t been removed it has just been renamed to “Creative Filters”, this change only applies to Japanese versions of the camera.

Another of the fixes rectifies a pretty uncommon problem which occurs when “set to Quick Mode AF during Live View shooting immediately after capturing an image with the C.Fn II-1 Long exposure noise reduction setting set to [2: On] and a shutter speed setting of 5 seconds or more”, sometimes the camera would act abnormally, however now this shouldn’t be a problem.

Finally another minor problem should no longer exist, sometimes after Live View shooting and switching on the EOS Utility screen the camera would act abnormally, this has now been fixed.

You can download this new firmware update here, the full changelog and installation instructions can also be found via the same link.

Have you installed firmware version 1.0.9 on your Canon EOS 60D? If so have you noticed any other improvements?

Mafia II: Developer Confirms Special Editions

There have been a few rumors surfacing online recently, which have suggested that 2K Games were planning on releasing a special Director's Cut edition of the hugely popular Mafia II game. Well now it appears that the rumors have just been confirmed.

According to a recent article by Fred Dutton at eurogamer.net, 2K Games has repackaged the popular third-person action-adventure game to include all the previously released DLC. This of course is ideal for those of you that have not yet purchased the Mafia II game.

The special edition – which has been tagged as Mafia II: Platinum Hits on the Xbox 360, Mafia II Greatest Hits on PlayStation 3 and Mafia II: Director's Cut on the PC – will not only include the bare-bones game, but also the three previously released expansions packs.

These of course include Joe's Adventures, The Betrayal of Jimmy and the Jimmy's Vendetta expansion packs. The pack will also include four style packs: War Hero, Greaser, Vegas and Renegade, which all come with two suits and two cars for use within the game.

Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are said to be available to purchase now from select retailers. Additional vendors worldwide will then sell the game throughout April. The PC version on the other hand is due to release in the coming months.

Although we haven't got a confirmed European price as of yet, we do know that that RRP in the US is just $29.99. Do you already own a copy of the Mafia II game and all the DLC? If you don't, would you consider buying any of the special editions?

Nokia X1-00 For India And Neglected Sectors

Nokia X1-00 For India And Neglected Sectors

The Nokia X1-00 for India will soon be available and is expected to cost about Rs. 2000. This is a very reasonable price, something that is ideal for those neglected sectors, which a number of mobile vendors seems to forget about. Nokia's slogan is Connecting People, and the Nokia X1-00 is certainly proof of that.

It is no secret that the features will not set any bench tests alight, but the X1-00 is not about that, it is about affordability. The design is a little on the plastically side, but it still has an aggressive style to it. What will make this handset more appealing to the Indian market is its remarkable music player, as we all know how much they love their music.

Some of the main features include a 1.8-inch TFT Display, GSM, FM Radio, Up to 16GB of Storage and 13 hours of talk time. However, it is the Loud Speaker at the back that makes this handset more interesting – just hope a group of people are not playing them at the same time – now that would be annoying.

According to Sense Applied, there are billions of people around the world who do not care about having a smartphone – I found this out during a vacation to Luxor recently – as it is very cheap to get connected to a mobile network. So all most people want to do in areas like this, India and Pakistan is to just get connected, and the Nokia X1-00 allows them to do that at an affordable price. If you have a little more to spend, then why not consider the Spice Projector Mobile (M9000 Popkorn).

Windows Phone 7 Getting NFC Soon?

Windows Phone 7 Getting NFC Soon?

One technology which smartphone manufacturers and mobile operating system developers seem keen to support in 2011 is NFC, we have previously heard how RIM want to bring this tech to all of their OS 6.1 devices, also we have heard that the iPhone 5 will almost certainly feature NFC support, now we are hearing that Windows Phone 7 could be next.

According to a recent article posted on BusinessWeek Microsoft are currently working on a version of Windows Phone 7 which will support contactless payments, this has not been officially announced, however BusinessWeek supposedly got this information from “two people familiar with the plans”.

Obviously to offer NFC support Windows Phone 7 smartphone manufacturers will have include an NFC chip in their compliant devices, but it is at least good to know that the software side of things is being sorted by Microsoft.

Back in February we posted an article which confirmed that Nokia were scrapping Symbian in favor of Windows Phone 7, perhaps future Nokia smartphones will feature NFC support, at the moment most WP7 devices have been manufactured by HTC and Samsung, therefore these manufacturers will almost certainly be adopting the tech soon.

Does your next smartphone purchase have to be NFC compliant?

Most Popular Cars List for 2011

Earlier on we brought you a list of some of the most expensive cars, and also a list of cars which cost the most to insure, but now we have a list of the most popular cars for 2011. Do you have any idea which vehicle is going to be top of the list?

There are actually a few lists since there isn’t an ‘official’ final list as such, but we have a feeling you won’t argue with the decisions too much as the models that have been chosen are considered to be the cream of the crop, both for 2011 at the moment, and also popular models thoughout 2010.

For example, Yahoo Autos have a very useful system going at the moment, where they list the most popular cars for 2011, based on reader’s hits each week which they accumulate into a table. Based on this weeks rankings, the 2011 Chrysler 300 is the top sedan, the 2011 Dodge Challenger is the top coupe, the newest Audi R8 is the top convertible and the 2011 Toyota Sienna is the most popular van at the moment.

If you are looking for some of the most popular models for 2010, you’ll find this list over at Cars.com useful. Top of their list is the Honda CR-V, and the starting price for it is $21,695 – you can check out a full overview on this model here.

For yet more opinion, we couldnt leave you without pointing you in the direction of another great list over at Popular Mechanics, where they have listed the top 2011 cars and trucks, based on their opinions – the 2011 Chevrolet Volt gets a special mention in their article.

Check out all the information above, then us know if you agree with the lists. If not, share your recommendation with us below.

Verizon iPhone 5 Faces More Competition

Verizon iPhone 5 Faces More Competition

With the news that AT&T and T-Mobile might be joining forces, the Verizon iPhone 5 faces more competition. Big Red thought that they had stung a huge blow to AT&T when they were able to offer their customers Apple's smartphone earlier this year, but this latest buyout has now blown the doors wide open.

One of the main reasons why consumers were happy with the Verizon iPhone was because they were less likely to experience dropped calls. There have been rumors that the 5th-generation iPhone will be a no-show at WWDC 2011 because they are working on an LTE version. We cannot say for certain if there is any truth in this, but when it does launch, things will be much tougher for Verizon if the merger goes ahead.

AppleInsider says this because of what AT&T’s Randall Stephenson recently said. He believes that if they were to get together with T-Mobile then calls would not only be cheaper, but there will also be an increase in quality – something that AT&T customers have been waiting for. Stephenson went on to say that they will "maintain intense competition."

If you watch the video that we have embedded for you below, you will know that T-Mobile's public spectrum is underutilized, and it is AT&T that will be able to utilize it. The end result would mean a capacity improvement for a number of cities by as much as 30 percent.

We already know that Sprint is not happy with this proposed merger, but we have yet to wait and see what Big Red has to say on the matter. On another note, talking about all the rumors of the so-called delayed iPhone 5 (cannot be delayed if there has been no official announcement) we can remember that Apple did not make any announcement of the iPhone 4 before WWDC 2011. We just thought we would offer you that as food for thought.

Homefront Review: One Accomplishment

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 02:49 AM PDT

Homefront Review: One Accomplishment

This is our quick Homefront review, a first impression after we have been playing the game for a couple of weeks. We know that graphics are not everything in a videogame, especially when I remember the fun playing the Commodore 64 as a child, it was all about gameplay then with games like Pole Position, Bounty Bob, and Paper Round.

In 2011 and on systems like the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3, you expect some level of graphics that should be far superior to the PS2 or original Xbox; there really is no excuse to lower the graphics to that level, no matter what the story. Sadly Homefront has done just that, the first thing that hit us while reviewing the game was graphics, and the lack of anything remotely above average.

You can see a few screenshots on this page, and this was after we tried to get the best from the game. We did not expect graphics to be the level of Crysis 2 (the best yet on a games console), but we also did not expect them to be of such a low standard.

Kaos Studios developed Homefront and THQ published the first-person shooter, which since its release has seen reviews bashing the game from all angles, but its not all bad. After playing Homefront for a good hour you start to forget about the lack of realistic graphics, and start to enjoy the story.

It's hard to believe, but there was a bigger shock than the bad graphics, and this was the impact the story gives. From the start you're met with a small movie that takes you through the downfall of the United States, and how the "United Korea" movement aims to take over the world.

This in itself is an shocking thought, but the way you're taken through the storyline, from sitting on a bus at the start of the game, and watching blood splat all over the bus window from someone's head, and children running around with bullets flying, its shocking.

Homefront certainly can boast one accomplishment, and this is a daring story that has impact from the start. We take our hat off to John Milius, who wrote the story and helped give the game something many others lack. Whether you like Homefront will depend on your need for graphics, for us it was a nice experience for a couple of hours, but sadly poor graphics is something that’s hard to ignore on a system like the Xbox 360 or PS3.

You cannot have everything in a game (well most of the time), but Homefront fails to please at a time when the FPS genre is crowded with massive titles. If Homefront had anywhere near the graphics of Crysis 2 with it's great story, then we would’ve been more compelled to play for longer. Sorry Homefront, but you just don't cut it in 2011.

Have you played Homefront, and if so what do you think?

Robert Wilhelm Bunsen Inventions and Facts

Following on from our earlier article which asked for your bunsen burner stories in celebration of Robert Bunsen and today’s Google Doodle, we now have a list of some of Robert Wilhelm Bunsen’s inventions and facts, as he did a lot more than just create the bunsen burner if you aren’t aware.

Today is actually the 200th anniversary of the great man, and we’re sure he was the main reason why chemistry lessons back in school were more fun than they usually are meant to be. Moving on though, how many of you knew that he also had a collection of other notable inventions?

These include a hydrojet filter pump, which was a device he used to wash samples, a grease-spot photometer which he used to measure light, a steam and ice calorimeter and a process for developing magnesium in vast quantities, according to Madehow.

However, an article over at EnchantedLearning also reveals that Bunsen was behind a chemical Bunsen Battery, and the Bunsen-Kirchhoff spectroscope which he invented with the help of fellow German Gustav Robert Kirchhoff – a tool which allowed both Chemists to perform spectral analysis of different kinds of materials.

Fascinating stuff don’t you think? You can read more information on these inventions in the links above, and there is a general overview of facts on Robert Bunsen at his Wikipedia page here. How many of you thought that he only invented the Bunsen Burner?

Popular Minivans: Top 5 2011 Models

Popular Minivans: Top 5 2011 Models

We cannot argue how popular minivans have become over the years, so before we take a look at the top 5 2011 models we thought we would see what they are all about. The Minivan is a little like a van, but is for personal use instead and offers more room than your standard hatchback, sedan or even the good-old station wagon. It is believed that the Minivan started life way back in 1936, and as you will see by the most up-to-date models – things have come a long way.

Auto 123 has compiled a list of the most popular minivans, and taking the number one spot is the 2011 Honda Odyssey. Prices start are $ 29,990 – 46,990 with five trim levels. These are as follows: Odyssey LX, Odyssey EX, Odyssey EX RES, Odyssey EX-L RES and finally the Odyssey Touring.

Taking up the second position is the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan, and thankfully is a little cheaper. Prices range from $ 27,995 – 36,995, and there are four models in the range.

Number three is the 2011 Toyota Sienna and with prices ranging from $ 27,900 – 38,700 is a little like the Dodge model mentioned above. Again, there are five trim levels.

The 2011 Kia Sedona is fourth and prices from new are $ 27,995 – 39,995, there are also five models in the lineup. Finally in fifth we have the 2011 Volkswagen Routan, and only has three trim levels. Prices range from $ 28,575 to 42,275.

These are five of the most popular minivans, but do you believe that other models should be on this list? We believe that if the VW Bulli Microbus ever came to market, then this would have to be one of the best minivans ever, but would you agree? Read a guide before you buy one of these vehicles.

Apple iPad 2 Wireless HDMI Transmitter

Apple iPad 2 Wireless HDMI Transmitter

The Apple feature for wireless streaming known as AirPlay has enticed Kelly McAteer and Eric Govoruhk to come up with a video mirroring full HD 1080p for the Apple iPad 2, via a USB battery and a wireless HDMI transmitter taking it from 720p to 1080p.

After being asked about making life easier for use in presentations, they soon got to work using the initiative to combine all components to make a mobile casing for the use of the iPad and iPad 2 in these situations.

Using the basics of a USB battery pack and wireless HDMI transmitter attached to the back, their prototype plastic casing might look a bit chunky but the logic is there, and I can see a sturdier edition in the pipeline.

Would you find this an interesting idea? Read the full story on 9to5.com, or watch the video below.

Top Gear Sued by Tesla Motors: Do they go too far?

Top Gear Sued by Tesla Motors: Do they go too far?

There is no denying how much fun BBC's Top gear program is, and although informative there are times when they anger others. It is no secret that the show has had it's fair share of issues when it comes to legal issue, so the news that Top Gear is sued by Tesla Motors over the Roadster comes as no surprise.

The carmaker has cited "malicious falsehood" over an episode of the show that was aired over two years ago. The reason was because when Jeremy Clarkson test-drove the Roadster he showed that it had run out of charge before the test was complete. Tesla had tried to contact the BBC about this, but according to the carmaker all attempts failed.

We do not want to offer any opinion on this issue, as it is now a matter for the courts, but it seems that salt is being added into the wounds all the time for Tesla, as people can see re-runs of the Roadster on Top gear, as well as videos on YouTube. The Tesla Roadster is said to be one of the most fuel-efficient cars on the road.

We have to wonder who will be taking aim at Top Gear next, this is not the first and will not be the last? We are huge fans of the show, but we will refrain from our opinion on this matter for obvious reasons.

The exact Trader Joe’s Pizza product is called Trader Joe’s Pizza Al Pollo Asado and the pizza has produce dates of January 27 and March 27 2011, according to ChicagoTribune.

While the overall health risk is low, it’s potentially a much more serious problem for those of you who suffer from wheat allergy, as consuming these pizzas could have serious health consequences.

It’s important to note, that if you have recently bought this product, or have it lying in your freezer and you don’t suffer from wheat allergy, then you will have no problems eating it, since the wheat allergy risk is the only factor associated with this recall. Goldman Sachs: The GAME Group Heading For Trouble

We told you yesterday about staff from GAME stores buying Nintendo 3DS consoles from Tesco to sell in their own stores. Today we have some more worrying news about the retail chain.

Christopher Dring from MCV is reporting that Goldman Sachs thinks the GAME Group is heading for trouble. They have downgraded the retailer from neutral to sell, and thinks its move to online and digital is "too late".

Rachel Carson from Goldman Sachs says the decision to move into online and digital markets is "late in the evolution of the industry", and means costs will be high. She also thinks that digital downloads will be a massive threat to the company's new and used business. GAME are currently thinking of closing 85 stores, but Carson thinks this could be as high as 105.

The Goldman Sachs report states there will be no new hardware launches before 2013, and new consoles by then will focus more on digital downloads instead of retail purchases. Software sales are predicted to be direct from publishers and will hit stores like GAME hard.

There is some glimmer of hope in the report, because if any new hardware does become available before 2013 and their online performance improves, things could turn around for the retailer.

Whether you buy from GAME or not, it will be worrying news for the many staff currently employed by the GAME Group. Let's hope for their sakes things can be turned round.

Do you buy from GAME?

Most Affordable Sports Cars in 2011: Scores

Choosing the most affordable sports cars in 2011 is very tough, so you need to try and narrow things down a little. This best way to do this is set yourself a ceiling price – $35,000 certainly seems to be a reasonable figure. The hard part now comes in trying to know which models are best, and the easiest way to do this is look at their scores and rankings.

Thankfully U.S. News Rankings and Reviews have done all the work for you, and have listed five of what they believe to be the best in the price range. These ratings and scores are based on a number of variables, which take into account test drives, reviews and much more.

Number five on the list is the 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse, and it is a known fact that the styling gives it an aggressive look, one that the performance is unable to match. The overall score for this car is 7.4.

In fourth place we have the 2011 Mazda RX-8, we have seen over the years that although this car looks nice and has that unique engine, poor fuel-efficiency seems to let it down. The score for this car is 8.2.

The top three vehicles are the 2011 Nissan 370Z, 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the 2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata, which scored 8.3, 8.5 and 8.7 respectively. Do you have any of these five models, do you agree with the list? Should any other model be considered? If money is no object then this list of the fastest sports cars might be right up your street?
