Apple Reportedly Clearing iPad Stock Ahead of iPad 2 Launch

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 10:33 PM PST

Website 9to5 Mac reports that Apple has stopped production of the first generation iPad in preparation of the iPad 2′s launch this week. “It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, but Apple has stopped production of the original iPads and cut of supplies to the channel.” [sic]

According to 9to5 Mac’s sources, retailers are limited to iPad inventory on hand with no word on when new inventory will be available.

While other retailers inventory may be getting low, the Apple Store still appears to have solid iPad inventory levels according to its website.  We checked the Apple online store and based on a random sampling of different countries, all stores have iPads in stock and show them shipping within 24 hours.

It’s not unusual for Apple to tighten its supply chain when a product refresh is imminent.  With the iPad 2 media event just a day away, now is a perfect time for Apple to cut production to make sure it’s not stuck with unsold iPad inventory.

Random House Adopts New E-Book Sales Model – Apple’s iBookstore Next?

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 09:51 PM PST

Random House, a division of German publishing giant Bertelsmann, has been one of the few publishers that hasn’t jumped on the e-book bandwagon with full abandon.  The company currently is not on Apple’s iBookstore but that soon may be changing.  The company issued a statement today saying they will be change its US e-book sales model, opening the door for its titles to be available to iPad and iPhone customers using Apple’s iBooks app.

Effective March 11, Random House will adopt an “agency model” for electronic book sales here in the US.  The new model will now allow Random House to set consumer pricing for its e-books and “will provide retailers with a commission for each sale.” This change in retailer commission is the key in allowing Random House to work with Apple and its iBookstore for the first time.

Apple currently takes a 30% commission of publisher sales whenever an iBook is purchased via Apple’s iBookstore. Random House’s current business model didn’t allow for it to pay a retailer like Apple when they distributed an e-book. According to Random House’s statement, "The agency model guarantees a higher margin for retailers than did our previous sales terms. We are making this change both as an investment in the successful digital transition of our existing partners and in order to give us the opportunity to forge new retail relationships.” Other publishers have already adopted an agency model, allowing them to pay Apple whenever a sale on iBookstore is made.

It is unclear why Random House waited this long to make the changes to their business model but there has been some speculation that it might have something to do with Apple’s upcoming iPad 2 launch this Wednesday.  There was no mention of the iPad in Random House’s media statement.  The company simply said that once the change was in place they were “looking forward to continuing to work with all our retail partners – both digital and physical ‐‐ on our joint mission to connect our authors with as many readers as possible, in whatever format they prefer."

at&t “iPad Hacker” Released on Bail

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 08:52 PM PST

Andrew Auernheimer, one of the two men accused of hacking at&t’s website last year, has been released on bail earlier today, via a whopping US$50,000 bond.

Auernheimer is one of the two “hackers” charged with fraud and conspiracy earlier this year, for “hacking” at&t’s network and collecting private information about more than 100,000 iPad users.

According to the Department of Justice, Auernheimer is forbidden to travel outside of his home state, and can only connect to the Internet for work-related tasks.

Auernheimer and his pal managed to uncovered an important security vulnerability in the at&t website, and shared the information with a reporter. According to Auernheimer, at&t was notified, but the telecoms giant immediately took the case to court, as it considered Auernheimer’s action a breach of security into its network, since the flaw allowed Auernheimer to obtain the e-mail addresses of a slew of iPad owners.

Not that while the Department of Justice may consider Auernheimer’s actions “hacking,” we’re not completely convinced that his actions were entirely malicious. In our opinion, Auernheimer should have done a much better job at cooperating with at&t to fix the breach before reaching out to reporters, but he also uncovered – and helped fix – a security flaw that should not have existed in the first place.

Xoom Web Engine Faster than iPad’s

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 05:50 PM PST

The folks at CNET just ran a head-to-head web rendering battle between the iPad and the Xoom. Unsurprisingly, the new Android tablet is faster… for now.

Before commenting on the results, let’s clarify one important thing: the iPad is a year old device, while the Xoom is brand new. In other words, CNET’s shout-out is not exactly fair, and this very test would make a lot more sense if CNET would have waited until the iPad 2 is out later this week.

CNET used three different websites for its tests, CNET.com, CBSNews.com, and GiantBomb.com. The tablets were tested several times using the exact same environment, in order to minimize false results due to network latency, or different WiFi interferences patterns. Depending on the website, CNET’s tests show that the Xoom loads web pages anywhere between 7% to 375% faster than the iPad.

CNET also ran an additional test, to see which tablet performs better when it comes to the 3D graphics department. The Xoom showed smoother characters, thanks its its higher screen resolution, but overall, the colors it delivered were much more washed-out.

As stressed earlier, while interesting, the shout-out is not exactly an apple-to-apple comparison, as the Xoom offers a dual-core processor, based on the Cortex A9 design, while the first generation iPad ‘only’ sports a single-core processor, based on the older Cortex A8 design. Hopefully, CNET will run the exact same test when the next generation iPad hits the street later this week.

DirecTV iPad App Available Now

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 09:58 AM PST

Four days ago, DirecTV announced their upcoming iPad app with a “coming soon” teaser post on their website that was touting integration with their satellite TV service, and features that would let you control your favorite shows, movies and sports conveniently from your iPad.

Well, the company did not wait too long. The app is available now on the App Store.

We’ve played a little bit with the application. From what we’ve seen so far, the application intuitive interface works well.

The application allows you to organize your favorite channels, discover shows, movies, and sport events. I was able to create lists of my favorite channels and teams, and with a tap, tune in my TV. You can also get detailed information about a show, and even record to your DVR.

However, the lack of video streaming to the iPad is a much needed feature. Dish Network already provides an application that allows you to enjoy live TV, even if you’re not at home, which is a great way to watch your favorite shows and/or games while traveling. You can also watch the content recorded on your DVR, and use the iPad as a remote control to manage your Dish device.

The DirecTV application for iPad is available now for FREE on the App Store.

For more details on receiver compatibility and other requirements you can click here and read the fine print at the bottom of the page.

Is This The New iPad 2?

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 09:41 AM PST

iPad 2 rumors are reaching a feverish pitch with Apple’s official iPad 2 unveiling just days away.  We’ve already seen several photos of what is rumored to be either the actual iPad 2 or a case for the new device, but this latest image from BGR is one of the best looking photos we’ve seen thus far.

The image has all the right elements, from the rumored tapered edges and larger speaker port to the rear facing camera. We’ve seen all of these items on other mock-ups but this image has a more polished feel to it than the earlier leaked photos that have hit the net.

BGR thinks this is probably more likely a fan rendering rather than a real photo of the new device, but they too think it is a good representation of what Apple will unveil on March 2.

The item that still bugs us is the speaker port on this new photo.  As was the case in earlier photos, the speaker port lacks the fit and finish we’re used to seeing in an Apple product.  The holes are not in line with Apple’s other product designs and we’d expect any speaker port to have tiny precision machined holes like those found on Apple’s Mac Book Pro lineup.

A White iPad 2 for this Wednesday?

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 06:44 AM PST

Will Apple unveil a white iPad 2 this coming Wednesday? New pictures keep popping up all over the net. We’ve heard about the new body design, several case designs, and rumors about a “Light Peak” high-speed connector.

Now a new image of an alleged white iPad 2 part has surfaced, and some believe that Apple will announce a white version of the next generation iPad this week.

The folks at 9to5Mac have released some photos of a digitizer layer with a white bezel that is supposed to be for the next iPad. According to 9to5Mac, the part comes from Shenzhen City via the iFixYouri iPhone repair shop.

The photos also reinforced the rumors about iPad 2 including a front-facing camera. You can see the smaller hole and what could be considered a smaller overall footprint that seems to be using a slightly thinner bezel.

Many of us are expecting to see the new iPad with both front and rear cameras, several internal hardware improvements and 3G versions for both GSM and CDMA carriers. However, these new pictures are surprising given that Apple has been trying to launch a white iPhone 4 for quite sometime.

Will we see a white iPad 2 announced this Wednesday? Will you buy one?  What do you think?
