iPad 2 – What to Expect?

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 09:42 PM PST

If you happen to be in the market for a new iPad, rejoice, as the next generation iPad is about to be announced. With less than 12 hours to go, what should we expect? Here is a roundup of the latest rumors around the new device.

Form factor

The iPad 2 is expected to be slightly smaller than its predecessor, and will sport a flat shell, instead of the curved shell currently featured on the first generation iPad.

Cameras

The next generation iPad will offer both front and back cameras. The front camera will offer a 640×480 resolution, and will allow users to use apps like FaceTime or Skype, while the back camera will offer a 1 megapixels resolution, and will be used to take pictures.

Screen

Initially, files found in the beta version of iOS 4.3 seemed to indicate that the iPad 2 would sport a retina display, however, it would appear that Apple did not move forward with the screen for now, due to production issues. As a result, the screen resolution of the iPad 2 will be 1024×768, just like the first generation iPad. Note that the screen is expected to perform much better when exposed to sun light though, to allow the iPad 2 to better compete with eReaders such as the Kindle.

Memory

The iPad 2 will embed 512MB of memory, like the iPhone 4.

Speaker / SD Card Slot

While initially, many believed the iPad 2 would offer an SD card slot, this capability is not expected to make it into the device after all. Instead, the second generation iPad is expected to come with a larger, more powerful speaker.

CPU

Some believe the device will come with a brand new dual-core processor, while other are convinced the device will sport the same processor featured in the first generation iPad and the iPhone 4, clocked at a higher speed.

Volkswagen’s New Bulli Microbus Integrates iPad

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 09:39 PM PST

Volkswagen’s iconic hippie Microbus is making a comeback at this year’s Geneva Auto Show and Apple’s iPad plays an integral role in the new vehicle.  The German auto giant first unveiled the Microbus in 1950 and now 61 years later, Volkswagen has packed the latest version with enough new high tech features to bring a smile to the face of hippies everywhere.

The new Bulli Microbus comes equipped with an eco-friendly electronic motor and an integrated iPad control system.  The iPad is centrally located in the Microbus’s center console and serves as the in-car infotainment system.  Driver and passengers can use the iPad to play the car’s stereo system, control navigation features, make hands-free telephone calls and adjust the Bulli’s climate control system.  The iPad also interfaces with the driver’s speedometer and other critical displays to provide an integrated driving information system.

The Bulli’s dashboard features an integrated iPad dock allowing the iPad to be easily removed for additional security when parked or to continue using apps while you’re outside of the vehicle.  The iPad mount also incorporates a centrally-located hazard warning switch, giving drivers quick and easy access to the car’s emergency blinkers.

The Microbus holds a special spot in Apple’s history so it’s fitting that Volkswagen has integrated Apple’s iPad into their newest Microbus.  Back in 1976 two young college students used the proceeds from the sale of their Microbus and HP scientific calculator to start one of the world’s most iconic computer companies.  The two young students were Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak and the company they started was of course Apple Computer.

It was Steve Jobs who sold his treasured Volkswagen Microbus to help raise the $1,300 they needed to begin their first production run. Who knows, maybe Volkswagen will send Jobs a new Microbus to make up for the one he had to give up back in 76.

iPad 2 – Trade-in Your Current iPad to Upgrade

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 11:45 AM PST

Apple's announcement for the new iPad is tomorrow. Without a doubt, it has been a highly anticipated announcement over the last few months.

We’ve heard plenty about all the possible new iPad features. While this can be an exciting time for both new and existing iPad owners, it could also be the best time for existing owners to think about ways to pay for that tempting iPad 2 upgrade.

You have a few options of course. You can sell your existing iPad via eBay. Many folks have done that when they upgraded from the WiFi-only to the iPad 3G. Of course, you can give your current iPad as a gift to your significant other or your kid, if you’re in the mood to give away 2010′s Hottest Gadget.

Or, you can use someone like NextWorth to facilitate the trade-in process of your first generation iPad. NextWorth is a website that will tell you the trade-in value of many of your electronic devices. They cover everything from MP3 players to video games to cell phones. Now, they’re offering trade-in values for the first generation iPad, which could help you subsidize the cost of an upgrade to the new iPad.

I’ve checked some of the trade-in values provided by NextWorth for the first generation iPad. The most recent trade-in values for first generation iPads with "Light Wear" seem to be as follows:

  • iPad 16G WiFi: $255
  • iPad 32GB WiFi: $285
  • iPad 64GB WiFi: $310
  • iPad 16G WiFi + 3G: $298
  • iPad 32G WiFi + 3G: $350
  • iPad 64GB WiFi + 3G: $390

The folks at NextWorth have told us they have partnered with Target stores across the country to offer an in-store trade-in option. NextWorth offers its online trade-in option as well. According to NextWorth, you will receive credit towards a purchase, or a prepaid Target card for the value of the trade-in that can be used for any item sold at Target stores. Via NextWorth.com, you have the choice of cash or a gift card when you trade-in your first generation iPad. NextWorth offers FREE, fully-insured UPS shipping service to all online customers.

For a list of participating Target stores click here.

We wanted to share this option, just in case you’re looking for ways to subsidize the cost of the new iPad being announced tomorrow.
